Necromancer #1

The Necromancer’s Seduction

Rate this book
She has never feared the walking dead. It’s the power required to reanimate the dead that startles her, seduces her. The power that dwells inside her…and is growing.

For Professor Ruby Montagne, being a necromancer has brought her nothing but heartache, and she walked away from that part of her life long ago. However, her quiet existence in San Francisco is shattered when she stumbles upon the body of a slain witch, and the supernatural community insists she transform him into a revenant to track the killer. But his murder was just the beginning, and Ruby soon realizes that the stakes are higher than anyone can imagine—and that revenants have nasty minds of their own.

Now demonic creatures have escaped into the human world, and zombies once again walk the streets. For humanity’s sake, Ruby forms an unlikely alliance with a witch, a zombie, and Ewan March, a demon warrior who sets her senses on fire. She’s always distrusted demons and Ewan is no exception, but circumstances push them closer together, and Ruby not only finds it harder to resist him, she isn’t sure she even wants to. But she suspects his job of patrolling the portal separating humans and demons conceals a dark and deadly past that may consume them both.

With events spiraling out of control, Ruby unravels a plot that not only threatens the human and demon realms, but puts Ruby’s very soul in jeopardy. Because when the dead walk, no one is safe. Especially Ruby.

I’m a huge fan of the paranormal genre, yet this is the first book I have read that focuses on the magic of necromancy. Ruby is a well-known necromancer among her supernatural community.
Since both her grandmother and mother were also necromancers, Ruby knows about her powers and has grown up among other supernatural entities secretly living among humans: witches, demons, vampires, and werewolves. Necromancers are a rarity in this world and differ from other paranormals because they have never been fully accepted by other supernaturals or “supes,” who also fear their unnatural powers.

 photo necromancerpower_zps9b30ee93.gif

When the story opens, we learn that Ruby refuses to embrace her magical gifts and keeps her distance from other “supes.” As a college professor, she lives as ordinary a life as possible. However, after the death of her grandmother, Cora, leaders of the supernatural community solicit Ruby’s help in finding out who is responsible for the recent murders of other paranormal members within their community.

Ruby not only has moral objections about the repercussions of raising the dead, she has also experienced some trauma and pain in seeing how necromancy affected her mother. The mystery behind her mother’s death isn’t revealed until later in the book, but it certainly justifies her unwillingness to put her abilities to use. Ruby has the potential to be a danger to everyone around her if her powers are abused, and we see examples throughout the story of the damage she can wield when she becomes a pawn used by others in their quest for power.

Initially, Ruby stubbornly refuses the Supernatural Coven’s request to raise Adam, a witch who has just been murdered and bring him back to life as a supernatural revenant so that he can provide information about the killer. Revenants differ from typical zombies because their souls, intelligence, and supernatural strength remain intact when they are raised from the dead. They can blend in with humans and are much more difficult to control. Only a powerful necromancer can bring them back to life. Although Ruby has had little practice in using her magic, she finally agrees to perform the blood ritual on Adam after learning her grandmother may have been targeted for assassination as well.

 photo cometodarksidemovinghands_zps79b51e44.gif

At first I had hard time accepting Ruby’s name. Ruby just didn’t seem like an appropriate name for a necromancer. The gemstone ruby is shiny and vibrant, but necromancers work in a realm of darkness and death. Yet, after further reflection, I realized that the name Ruby is symbolic of a necromancer’s power. Rubies are red, the color of blood, and it is Ruby’s blood that has the power to raise the dead. Sebastain does a good job of describing the actual ritual of raising the dead and the feeling of ecstasy that Ruby gets when she “plugs into” that power source.

As the plot develops in the ongoing search for a killer, a burgeoning relationship forms between Ruby and a very handsome demon named Ewen who is given orders by the Coven’s demon leader, Malthus, to protect her.

 photo hotcomeonlook_zpsc3a76a25.gif

Ruby has done her best to stay away from Ewen in the past because of her intense attraction to him and her refusal to be a part of his world. And after all, he is a demon.

The entire story is told from Ruby’s point-of-view which limits readers’ knowledge and understanding of the overall situation. Yet, I was able to form an emotional connection with Ruby and could relate to her worried and frazzled state through much of the book. Her dry humor in the midst of danger kept me engaged and provided a bit of relief from the tension raised in the story.

On the other hand, there were instances later in the book, where I felt Ruby’s thoughts and actions were incongruent with the way she was earlier portrayed. In the beginning, Ruby seems to be a calm, rational, polished professional who proceeds with caution. Yet, her later thoughts and actions show a woman in emotional disarray whenever she’s in Ewen’s presence, and, as complications develop, her reactions are based more on emotion and impulse rather than logic. Even her language becomes crasser as the conflicts intensify. However, if I were forced to raise the dead, control multiple “super zombies,” search for my grandmother’s murderer, and resist the advances of a tempting demon then I'd probably react in an even worse way.

 photo runawaysobbing_zpsf21d69a2.gif

Hopefully, I’ll never find out.

Ruby’s resistance to learning about her past and her abilities now put her at a disadvantage and force her to wing it much of the time.

 photo dontneedthis_zps0471c708.gif

She is still learning about her powers and doesn’t have full knowledge of her capabilities. Her pride also jeopardizes her safety because she won’t admit that at times she doesn’t know what she’s doing and, even more importantly, she doesn’t always have complete control over her revenants. At times she puts herself and other humans in danger of being attacked.

The book’s title implies a romantic seduction, and Ewen is determined to be the one to seduce both Ruby’s mind and body. He is strong, passionate, and possessive. However, unlike other typical alpha male characters, he doesn’t force his protective nature on Ruby; instead, he gives her space to make her own decisions. At this point in the overall story, they primarily have a physical relationship without the emotional depth needed to have a long-lasting relationship. Ewen’s deception and demon honor also keep them apart when the truth about Ruby’s real identity and powers are revealed.

However, romance isn’t the only type of seduction in the book. Ruby is also conflicted over her increasing desire to use her abilities. The more she uses her magic, the more of a temptation it becomes, and the infusion of power she experiences when she performs rituals only heightens this form of seduction.

 photo onlyknewpowerofdarkside_zpsee934e59.gif

I like the dual meaning behind the title.

The supporting paranormal characters are powerful in their own right and it isn’t always clear to Ruby or readers what their motivations are and whether they are allies who can be trusted. Even though they behave in a civilized manner, it remains clear that each has a monster lurking just below the surface ready to emerge when necessary. For the first time, I actually found a zombie character likeable, but, then again, Adam is also a zombie with a conscience. He is the voice of truth and reason that Ruby needs when she questions her actions.

The story’s plot is well-executed and provides a nice blend of mystery and suspenseful action that kept me absorbed, especially in the second half of the book when truths are revealed and characters become expendable. The story left me with a comfortable reprieve until the second book is released and I look forward to seeing what’s next in this new paranormal series.

A mix of paranormal romance and urban fantasy, The Necromancer's Seduction is a welcome addiction to a fluid genre.

Characters and plot show that you can get some novelty even in a crowded field as this is. The heroine is a necromancer, loathed and coveted for her power, who has left her world to go looking for normalcy. Until of course she's compelled to go back to the Supe world.
And here starts her story in this book.

There are of course the usual caveat of UF: a heroine who reveals herself to be more than what she knows, weres, vamps (and yes they are the bad guys!), demons, witches and... zombies. And all the politics involved in managing the Supes.

The world-building isn't that solid and some of the explanations sounds weak, but this is the first book by this author. I'm ready to bet she'll grow into her skin.

Now, as usual, my pet peeves. I appreciated that Ruby, the heroine, isn't a kick-ass warrior and her necromance a power that has to grow.
I appreciated less the very strong PNR feel the book had. I have no problem with a romantic interest or sub-plot, but here the romance had too strong a presence for a UF. This unfortunately imply a heroine whose backbone and IQ went in the gutter the moment the Guy enters a scene. Moreover, I'm not sure how they got together. I never really felt them falling for each other.

I wouldn't have minded a stronger heroine, and I mean stronger in will, not in body. As I said I don't need kick-ass, but some anger or other reaction to the events in the story would have felt more real to me.

The end wrap the story, but some characters and some threads are clearly waiting for a sequel. And let's hope the heroine isn't really going to act on her pretty stupid final idea :D We'll see in 2014 in The Necromancer's Betrayal

Review to come as part of the book tour. SO ENJOYABLE. I'm so glad I signed up for this one. The ending leaves it open for more books and HELL YES I WANT MORE. Okay, that's it. Review to come! *******************

I'm a supernatural/paranormal/fantasy/romance/crime junkie. I admit it. This book satisfied every itch of my needs. From a bitchy witchy dear friend to a sexier than hell demon to the gore of zombies, this book kept me turning the pages to read on. I liked all of the characters from Adam to Kara to Ewan to Ruby. I even liked the character we only see from Ruby's memories, Cora, her grandmother.

While it's a recognizable quirk that the heroine is more powerful than she knows, it was still enjoyable to read as Ruby discovers her power and learns more about her grandmother from her new supernatural contacts. I liked how Ruby is, in the human world, unassuming, quiet, and seemingly frustrated/bored/annoyed with the status quo, and yet she is still denying her true nature and self. I couldn't imagine teaching a class while some dead thing is lurking at me!

I enjoyed watching Ruby grow from timid to strong, her anger growing as she realizes that she's being duped/kept from knowing the full truth of anything. I liked listening in on her conversations with herself as we observe the revenant and zombies. She keeps this thread of humility and compassion that endear her to the reader.

I can't talk about the ending without giving something away, but I will tell you this: I keep searching goodreads/amazon/the web for any tidbits/glimpses of the next book. Whoa, baby... that is not how I expected her relationship to turn and ... I want MORE.

I received my copy of THE NECROMANCER'S SEDUCTION from the publisher via Netgalley, for this book tour. The above was my honest, unsolicited opinion.

I liked the way this author was able to delve into her heroine's psyche. I felt like I was walking in her shoes, fighting her battles, and feeling her angst. Not sure when the sequel will be released but will buy it for sure.

Original review here: http://offbeatvagabond.blogspot.com/2013/01/book-chick-citys-100-books-in-year.html

The Necromancer's Seduction follows a woman named Ruby who is a professor. She teaches anthropology and lives a pretty quiet life. If she didn't, she knows she would go mad. Ruby is a necromancer who hates to use her powers. Yet she is always asked from the fae to Ninjas (yes, Ninjas) to bring back the dead for any reason under the sun. She never gives in though until danger strikes. When her best friend and witch, Kara, asks to assist her in finding something from a fellow member of her coven, they stumble on something they didn't expect. Ruby may be supernatural, but she tries to stay clear of the supernatural world as much as possible. This situation won't let especially since it seems to hit close to home. She now has to push her powers to their limits and hope not to die in the process.

I really loved our main character Ruby. She is a necromancer, but she tries to avoid her supernatural as much as possible because of the danger it brings. I loved watching her on this journey, going from timid to a strong and powerful. But she was able to keep a great sense about her. She doesn't get lost in her discoveries and she makes quite a few throughout the book. Ruby is definitely someone to root for. We also have Kara, Adam, and Ewan, especially Ewan. Ewan is a sexy demon warrior that definitely has his eyes on Ruby, but she tries to avoid him all she can. She definitely has a thing for him, but again, supernaturals are a no-no. The chemistry between these two was smoldering. They were incredible and I can't wait to see what it in store for them. Oh man, you have no idea.

This story was fun, suspenseful and fast paced. It was a great balance of mystery, romance and paranormal. Sebastian waste no time getting into the adventure of this book. I was hooked from page one. A simple act of, well, breaking and entering (it is not as bad as it sounds at first) turns deadly. Ruby is then thrust into the world she worked so hard to avoid when it becomes apparent her grandmother has kept a lot from her. Cora, Ruby's grandmother and also a necromancer, was very popular in the supernatural world. Ruby knows Cora had a lot of power and was always used for them, but she slowly learns things about her she never saw coming. It was a great experience learning these things along with Ruby. I love that this was more Urban Fantasy than Paranormal Romance as well. I love them both as you all know, but I was in the mood for some action and I got it. I won't reveal where this book goes, of course, but it was a great ride.

I am in love!!! I am beginning to notice that I am a bit partial to PNR reads with demons as the main love interest. I honestly can't explain what it is, they just drive me crazy. I love it. Sebastian definitely has herself a new fan for sure. This is her debut and what a debut it is. If you are looking for a major supernatural fix with zombies, demons, revenants (zombies with their souls intact), and more wrapped in a fast and fun read, you have found the perfect book. I am so excited for the sequel. It can't get here fast enough. Highly recommended.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This story was filled with a fun new world of supernaturals that sucked me in from the beginning. Ruby was a great tough chick reluctant hero. The book was filled with enough smut and demon dude hotness to keep the pages turning, too. It was a great combination that is sure to win me over - adult contemporary paranormal romance. If you like that sort of this (like I do), then this book will be a fun read.

I also particularly liked how the story was told. I'm not a fan of big drawn out histories at the start of a book, so I was pleasantly surprised when we simply met up with Ruby as if we'd already known her. The story takes off from there, and we get information when we need it, along with revelations at the same time Ruby gets them.

I loved the seduction part of The Necromancer's Seduction, of course. Between all the yummy baddies floating around, I am really eager to see where this story goes, assuming we get lots of more installments in this series.

Just to say what I'm sure other readers will point out -- yes, the combination of sex and necromancy makes my mind jump to Anita Blake. This is really nothing like the Anita Blake series, aside from the fact that they are both necromancers that have sex. There is no Jean-Claude, there is no annoying Richard -- I would actually say that if you're tired of the Anita Blake series, check this book out. It's a fun read that isn't weighed down by 20+ books of the same thing.

What a fun read. If I had to chose only one sentence to describe that would be it. It’s a really fun way to start a series. There’s enough to keep everyone entertained. And a good plot line and story to go with it. There’s also plenty of supernatural creatures to go around.

Ruby a necromancer, though not necessarily by choice. She’s actually pretty awesome, but not because she dominantly kicks ass, more like she works for it, and is dedicated enough. I really enjoyed her character. And I also enjoyed her relationship with her best friend Kara, who is a trip. And there’s plenty of HAWT man pieces to go with it :)

I happen to love demon books, because there’s so much you can do with them. It’s not like a vamper, where you’re either a sparkler, or a total blood sucker who kills everything LOL Ok, so maybe vampers are a little more complicated, but back to the demons. The author has a great way of playing into the norm, while making it her own as well. It’s also written like an urban fantasy while having a little romance on the side. But plenty of action, and some crazy moments. Sometimes funny, sometimes creeptastic, sometimes downright scary. I will say those are exciting moments.
I definitely enjoyed this one, and though I am keeping a little more tight lipped than normal, it’s only because of major spoilers that would come out of them. So I recommend you check this one out! I will but waiting in line for book two to come out and play! :) 4.5 AWESOMELY CREEPTASTIC PAWS!!

A really good urban fantasy novel. The world building was top notch, and the plot was fresh and original. The characters were well written. Ruby, the main character was pretty awesome. A necromancer unsure of her power trying to maintain a normal human life and not get too involved in the supernatural world around her. She was a little attutidey, but not over the top bitchy. Smart and likeable and not over the top powerful. Granted she was supposed to be very powerful but she was unsure of herself and didn't flaunt it, needing to be rescued on a few occasions before coming to terms with her abilities.

I found the take on demons in the supernatural world here really interesting. Generally speaking I always tend to think demons = bad guys. But while they're certainly not the good guys, the hierarchy is interesting and there's some definite grey areas. The love interest Ewan was a great flawed demon hero. Again, not completely a good guy, but not a bad guy either. He had really good chemistry with Ruby and the romance scenes were spicy and hot.

The plot twists were well executed, the story was faced paced and even nicely gory in bits. A satisfying ending leaving the possibility for a sequel. I know I would love to see more from this world.

A very good read.

I was given this book by the Lovers of Paranormal in exchange of an honest review

There's a hidden power inside Ruby, something more than the necromancer part of her...and even though she doesn't want it to be discovered some of the events that happen will make it almost unbearable not-knowning

Her grandmother is dead and a serial killer is on the loose the fact that he is a necromancer adding to the unwisful events...Ruby is summoned by the council of the supes to try and solve the problem. With her necro abilities and the secret that is hidden deep inside her she will try and fight...but will it be too much for her....will her powers consume her like her mother...and what does charming Ewan has to do with all this?

The necromancers seduction is a fascinating story.Part romance part mystery..Ruby is unique and even though she posseses great talentsshe refuses to be consumed by them.Ewan is an mysterious young man that catches her interest from their first meeting

Join Runy to her trip against reality. A book full of mystery, intrigue, suspense and sharp turns that leave you wandering what happens next...I am literally on for more

The Necromancer's Seduction is an entertaining, sexy story. The main character, Ruby, is a necromancer – a supernatural with the ability to raise the dead. After a series of murders within the supernatural community, Ruby is petitioned to raise a murdered witch in order to help find the killer. However, raising the dead is not a simple thing to do and it seems that everything that could go wrong does.

I love a good, strong female lead, and Ruby fits the bill. She is not the outright kick-ass type who takes down everyone and everything in her way, but she can hold her own with some help from her friends, and she learns and strengthens her abilities along the way. Throw in a super sexy, irresistible demon and what you've got is a great story.

The Necromancer's Seduction was an entertaining read with just the right amount of action, dialogue and character development.

Ruby, the heroine and reluctant necromancer, was a strong and likable character and her best friend, Kara, a somewhat bitchy witch, was a good addition to the story. Ewan, the demon lust interest, was sexy, charming and protective. I also really enjoyed Adam's character but won't say much about him so I don't spoil anything.

I love books with a little demon romance in them and this book had that and a helluva lot more. You'll find zombies, witches, revenants, demons and necromancers woven into this exciting tale.

The writing was solid, sometimes funny, sometimes creepy, sometimes sexy and sometimes scary. If you enjoy an urban fantasy with a little romance and sex on the side, you'll probably enjoy The Necromancer's seduction. I did.

** I received this book in exchange for an honest review. Lovers of Paranormal, LoP**

'The Necromancer's Seduction' was a pretty good book. I liked the storyline and how it played out. Full of supernatural beings that are power hungry. Well written. This story held some interesting surprises. The characters were great. Ruby makes a great lead and as surprises unfold, Ruby wii be a force to be reckoned with. Ewan is also quite the demon hunk. I loved the humor that Mimi Sebastian brought into this book. It's a great add to your tbr list.

I am a fan of the Anita Blake series (ok, I am a former enthusiastic fan current frustrated reader) so when I saw that this book is about a female necromancer who get’s caught up in supernatural madness I was amped. I did like the world the author built, as well as Ruby’s bestie Kara. Unfortunately for me the rest of the book left a lot to be desired. Ewan the romantic interest is the typical brooding, alpha, supernatural male. He decides that Ruby is “his”, rocks her world in the bedroom and saves her a few times. But there is nothing of substance to their relationship, especially since he lied to her about a extremely important plot point and he was commissioned by his boss to protect her. He never actually says that he loves her (which would be silly considering they knew each other for about a week) or says anything about them forming a committed relationship, yet her reacts like a possessive nut when she is around other males.

Ruby is a College Professor, and working on a PhD in Anthropology. Which means that she is intelligent and driven. It also means that her observational and deductive skills should be exemplary but somehow everything seems to fly over her head and she never uses basic common sense. Let’s start with her reintroduction to the supernatural. Both her mother and grandmother shielded her from the magic and politics, so at 30 years old she basically has no training or experience as a Necromancer. She is told in order to help solve a mystery she needs to raise a revenant (a coherent Zombie with a soul) which would be hard if the corpse was human, but it is supernatural which is damn near impossible to bring back. Both her mother and grandmother tried, neither succeeded, and both almost died. Ruby doesn’t even think twice and volunteer’s. She’s not sucidedal, so why she just jumped in is beyond me. Ruby has a sex buddy Steve, they hang out, go on date’s, and then have sex, but no commitment. That relationship makes a lot of sense. Steve is human so she can’t tell him the truth about herself so she keeps him at arms length. I’m not slut shamming her. Ruby is a grown, single, healthy woman. So is she wants to go out on a date and end it with sex with Steven and then less than 48 hours later have sex with Ewan. Go for it. But when she said she’s not sleeping with two men she lost me. While yes she did not literally have sex with them at the same time (and if she did so what) she lost me when she made a comment to that effect. It was unnecceasry, untrue, and she was talking to herself. On the subject of sex I know this is fantasy, but there was no mention of condom’s or birth control during any of the sex scene’e with Ewan. Not only is Ewan a complete stranger who she know’s nothing about, she also doesn’t know anything about demon’s as a species or his because they are so secretive. She doesn’t even know exactly what kind of demon he is and what if any effect sex with him could have on her. Not to mention whether or not he can get her pregnant, if he can contract human STD’s, if demon’s have their own STD’s.

That was a running theme with Ruby through out the story. She never just stopped and asked basic questions. She finds out who her biological grandfather is, a secret her grandmother also kept from her mother. Ruby also doesn’t know who her father is. She never cared, but after learning part of her heritage and discovering her super strength as a necromancer. She is stronger than her mother, who 50% other, while Ruby is only 25%. Which means her father must be something powerful, yet Ruby never said “Hey, seeing as I crazy powerful I should probably try and find out who or what my Dad is, just so I don’t get caught up in another dangerous situation that could have been easily avoided with me knowing a little bit of my family history”. The book also ends without solving the main conflict and a cliffhanger.

Would I read the next book? Maybe. I liked the world the author built. I liked Ruby’s bestie Kara. And as frustrating as I found the idiotic moves of the heroine I was still way less annoyed by her than I have been with Anita Blake lately.

The Necromancer's Seduction by Mimi Sebastian is the first book in The Necromancer series. For Professor Ruby Montagne, being a necromancer has brought her nothing but heartache, that is why she turned away from that part of her life. However, her quiet existence in San Francisco is shattered when she stumbles upon the body of a slain witch, and the supernatural community insists she transform him into a revenant to track the killer. But his murder was just the beginning, and Ruby soon realizes that the stakes are higher than anyone can imagine. For humanity’s sake, Ruby forms an unlikely alliance with a witch, a zombie, and Ewan March, a demon warrior who sets her senses on fire. She’s always distrusted demons and Ewan is no exception, but circumstances push them closer together, and Ruby not only finds it harder to resist him, she is not sure she even wants to. Events spiral out of control and Ruby unravels a plot that not only threatens the human and demon realms, but puts Ruby’s very soul in jeopardy.

The Necromancer's Seduction is a solid urban fantasy with a romance story that takes the backseat for the most part. Ruby is a college professor that just happens to be a necromancer. She ignores that part of her life, but is dragged back in to solve a murder that might be related to the death of her grandmother. As with any organization or group, the supernatural community is rife with power plays and politics, and Ruby ends up right in the middle of a perfect storm. Demons,. witches, vampires, werewolves and more all have strong feelings about necromancers and the power they wield- and none of those feelings are exactly warm and fuzzy. The relationship between Ruby and Ewan is complicated, with Ruby relying on her distrust of demons to help her keep her distance. Of course things are not that simple, and includes a little twist that I rather expected on some level at the end. My only frustration with the book is the feeling that this was not the first book in the series. It seemed like the author expected me to already have some knowledge about many of the characters and the power structure from the beginning, but I did not. Since this is the first book that I am aware of from the author, I am not sure if I simply wanted more background story or if I missed something somewhere.

I recommend The Necromancer's Seduction to readers that enjoy urban fantasy with a touch of romance. The quirky writing style and the complications of a necromancer near vampires gave this urban fantasy some original touches that make it worth a look. The intimate scenes are hot and heavy, so if you would rather avoid that in your reading then I would pass on this series. I am interested to see where this series will go from here and am very likely to keep on reading the series as it progresses.

Genre: Fantasy/ Paranormal
Author: Mimi Sebastian
Book: The Necromancer’s Seduction (Necromancer #1)
My Star Rating: 4
Will I read I read it again? Yes

Intro: She has never feared the walking dead.

I love Paranormal/ Fantasy books. But I really have not read a book that is focused on Necromancy. So this means Zombies and revenants. The difference between the two are zombies have no soul. Where as when a revenant is made they remember their life and have the feelings of being alive. Although if they go to long, they will crave killing and eating people.
Ruby is a necromancer who hides from herself by being a Professor at the college. She knows what she can do but is very stubborn and won’t raise the dead. That is until the “Sups” come after her and make her bring a dead witch back as a revenant.
This is a cool paranormal, romance and mystery book. Can’t wait to read the 2nd book in the series.

The Necromancer's Seduction

I received a free copy, through LoP on Goodreads, in exchange for a review.

Professor Ruby Montagne has a deep hidden power that most people are unaware of and she's trying to keep it that way. She has tried to remove herself from the supernatural world and continue her life as normal as possible. But, coming across the death of another supernatural draws her back into the community, much to her dismay. Coming back to the community, as one of a handful of extremely powerful necromancers, she must make hard choices to help protect the people of San Francisco. The plot is so thick with power & revenge and with the possibility of the human & demon realms colliding puts her in real harm. The power over the dead could be her downfall or savior.

‘His mouth drooped. “Your mother was talented, but reckless. Quite the opposite from you.” He regarded me, tilting his head. “You try to deny your interest in necromancy. But you and your mother are a lot alike.”

“We are nothing alike.” My tone could have turned the air a putrid green. “I don’t want or need the power.”

My gut twisted into a tight knot, tying down my emotions. My mother had prized her necromancer ability over most things in her life, and at times, that included me. In high school, I’d searched the bleachers for her during my basketball games until I gave up, dejected.’

The story was entertaining to say the least. Ruby is a great character and through the story you get to watch her struggle with her power and decisions. An unlikely crew of characters surround her, helping as much to lead her in the right direction. Not knowing that there were some graphic sex scenes threw me a bit, but I understand why they were in: to capture the emotional bond between the characters. Overall, a good start to a new series.

I received this book in exchange for my honest opinion and all the views are my own. I will forewarn you, this review is written in vague terms. I do this because I don't want to spoil the most delectable parts and main story lines or plot twists.
Reading this book was enjoyable and informative in regard to the supernatural beings and this author's interpretation of their beliefs, laws, and support systems--particularly, demons, as I hadn't read much about them previously.
The main character, Ruby, is learning to deal with balance in her life. Whether it is work, friends, family, love, or self-acceptance these are all becoming demons she must face along with the actual Demons she must assist with their problems. She journeys towards finding it in unlikely places while setting some real page turning situations to right; all the while, learning this does not come without costs to those close to you and most of all one's self.

NOTE: I liked the flow from emotional to sensual to communicative to forceful strength. The author has a gift of covering a sensitive yet powerful female lead role. The supporting characters were strongly written. I developed a love and interest for Ruby's best friend, Kara, who happens to be a witch and Malthus, an important demon that I can't wait to read more about!
While the subject of necromancy is dealt with in nature, it is not a detailed discussion. The story follows the end result once the ritual has been completed.
If it is unclear to anyone, I will point out this is a book for adults. There is violence, and gore. Use of adult language, several intense descriptions of sexual encounters, adult concepts and themes.

Necromancer's Seduction provides all of the elements of a great paranormal story! The author gives background information about her supernatural universe in a manner that mixes the information with the storyline. There are no stilted paragraphs discussing the history and the types of supernaturals in her universe. There aren't many book series out there about necromancers, and this one does not disappoint.

The heroine has moments when she is annoying, and other moments when she made me feel sympathetic for her. She is clearly reluctant to embrace her destiny as a necromancer and all that comes with it, and only entertains the notion when she is directly threatened. Anytime an author can cause a reader to feel any kind of way about the characters, whether that is love or hate, the author has done a good job of pulling the reader into his/her universe. The heroine is involved in what I would describe as a love triangle, with elements that suggest that she is torn between wanting no emotional ties from a relationship, and wanting all emotional ties that a potential relationship has to offer. The fact that the two men creating her love triangle are a mortal who knows nothing about her supernatural nature, and a demon speaks volumes.

The author has created an interesting universe with engaging characters and a story that is enjoyable to read. I look forward to reading the next installment! I received this book in exchange for an honest review from the Goodreads group Lovers of Paranormal.

I was given this book in exchange for an honest review (Lovers of Paranormal).

This book had a lot of potential. Now, I am fully aware this is targeted for the adult audience due to explicit scenes in some parts. That did bug me slightly since the plot felt more of a teen fiction. The main character, Ruby, isn't very comprehensible some of the time, although she's not weak and doesn't take crap. Ewan is a typical possessive and attractive male lead, but I felt at the end he lost his entire character. Also, I didn't understand why the characters just went around and exposed themselves to more trouble. Sometimes Ewan would just disappear and Ruby would be faced with trouble that she handles alone, which is weird since she has no previous experience. It's like she's born with killer abilities which, even though this is fantasy, cannot be attained instantaneously. The characters' reactions also weren't very realistic. I mean, they lived on big lies and still were able to act normal.

I'm not trying to be negative, because I did enjoy reading this book. Maybe I'll even read the second book and see what goes on with with Ruby and Ewan. I love the supernatural genre and this book did give me that feel to it, which is great. I am also glad this book wasn't another one of those Twilight-themed novels since those seemed to be spamming the supernatural (and even realistic fiction) genre in an overwhelming rate. This book, though somewhat clitched without going too far, gave me something I could read at a fast pace and remember where I left off after stopping for a day or two.

I really enjoyed this book. It reminded me of Laurell K Hamilton’s Anita Blake series – before her books descended into random wanton sex for the sake of it. Mimi creates a wonderful character in Ruby who takes on supernatural journey that is definitely open for another book. The sex scenes are classy and carefully placed and some of the zombie descriptions are not only gross buy amusing; for example ‘Damn these zombies and their Lego body parts!’

From a writer’s perspective there wasn’t any new plot points in there, no real surprises – but hey, that’s okay. There’s not much more than can be done with paranormal romance, as it’s such a popular genre and there are so many books out there right now. It jumped in a few places, but I was reading a Galley, so I put that down to it being an un-corrected proof. The Necromancer’s Seduction may not be revolutionary in concept, but what it does do, it does extremely well.

The front cover is romantic and sensual and really does capture the essence of the book. Although not enough that you’d be embarrassed reading it on a train!

I’ve always thought necromancers are one of the more forgotten about paranormal characters, so I do relish the fact that there is now another series out there to read.

4 out of 5 stars – if you’re a paranormal romance fan – pick up this book. It’s a solid read that keeps your eyes on the page. But beware! If you try to put it down, it will rise back up and devour your reading time!

Writing: 2
Story: 1
Satisfaction: 1ish

I wasn't really a fan of this book. I thought the characters were written in an overly familiar way and it was kind of jarring. Like picking up book 2 in a trilogy and having the characters make constant unexplained references to the last book.

The end also leaves you hanging in a way that makes you wonder if you somehow lost the last pages. Not satisfying.

In this world, being a necromancer is an inherited trait and Ruby doesn't want anything to do with it. Her grandmother and mother were both necromancers and she just wanted to stay out of the supernatural community (which included vampires, werewolves and assorted demons). But her grandmother and mother are both dead and the supernatural community starts to approach her with requests. Eventually one comes that she can't say no to, creating a revenant (a zombie that can think and with it's previous memories and personality), to track down her grandmother's killer.

There's also a demon named Ewan who she gets involved with. The scenes of the two of them hooking up are pretty good but they seem a little weirdly timed.

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley.

A very good debut novel. This paranormal romance also includes some suspense that involves vampires, witches, werewolves, and a necromancer who is very new to her powers, and she’s already being forced to change some dead people into zombies, making this a pretty enjoyable read. I look forward to reading more from Ms. Sebastian.

Ruby does not want the powers that come with being a necromancer, but there is not too much she can do about them right now except learn to use them. Forced to change a murdered witch into a revenant so that he may help find his killer she has gotten a lot more than she ever expected. She finds herself teaming up with her best friend who’s a witch, her new revenant zombie, and a demon that she’s thought about more often than she should to find out the truth. They not only have to find out who is committing the murders but find them before it’s too late. If they don’t the world will be taken over by zombies and whoever controls them.

Received for an honest review. I completely messed on the Amazon review so here is how I really feel. Freaking great!!! I had a great time with Ruby, Adam, Kara, and Ewan. They encounter so many twists and turns but they remain sane. I loved that I could not predict what was around the next corner. Truly this book is a paranormal lovers dream book. Ruby is fantastic. She doesn't whine or complain she just kicks butt and takes names. She is strong and finally realizes what her purpose is in the world. You have to read this.
