Chloë desperately wants a normal life. She wants to go to college, make friends, fall in love, and just be an 18 year old girl. There is only one problem, Chloë is a witch.
Soon after arriving at the university Chloë meets Finn, Anita, and Dean. The four college freshmen become inseperable. Love and friendship blossoms, but their carefree college days are violently interrupted. College students begin to go missing, and so have several powerful supernatural beings. Chloë and her friends are drawn to investigate by a mysterious visitor.
The four learn that the supernatural world has plans and expectations for them, plans they aren't happy with. Can they fight their destiny, or will they learn to accept it?
I've made up stories for as long as I can remember. My teachers accused me of daydreaming too much, so I figured it was only fair to share my fantasies with everyone.
I’ve really been struggling with writing this review because I really, really wanted to love it, but sadly, although I think the story has potential, it still needs work.
The overall story was interesting. Chloe (soon to be the most powerful witch ever) goes off to school. She quickly makes friends, and in no time figures out that they are all supernatural. When people start to go missing, Chloe and her friends are thrust into the middle of a supernatural war. There was lots of action, an interesting love triangle, and some intriguing characters.
I think the thing that really threw me off of this story was the paragraphing and editing. Throughout most of this book new speakers did not get a new paragraph. Two or three characters would have a line of dialogue within a single paragraph and a lot of the time there were no tags either. This made it hard to follow as a lot of the time I really wasn’t sure who was saying what. I spent too much time trying to figure out who was speaking, that it became hard to follow the story or connect with any of the characters. I do wonder if maybe this was a formatting issue, but even so, it was frustrating.
In the end, although the story was interesting, this book still needs some tender love and care.
This is a book you must read if you are into supernatural or paranormal stories and are looking for characters beyond high school age. The vivid descriptions of each character and their background pulls you into the story right away. I've already got characters I'll be rooting for in the next book! Also, learn from my mistake and don't read the second half too late at night. I won't give away what happens but will confess I slept with a light on that night.
Central Coven is a great book for anyone who loves supernatural themes to include witches, vampires, and others. The difference with this book is that while it shows the powers of each characters, it's really about making your own choices and fighting destiny. Set in small town Ellensburg, Washington, the author uses a lot of local names and locations that only locals would recognize, which I appreciated. She also touches on local Native American folklore, and she shows a strong grasp of European history when describing the backgrounds of the characters. I also love the characters themselves, they are young and gorgeous, and going thru what most college aged kids go thru, but with the added bonus of supernatural powers and war. The main characters Chloe, is sassy and gorgeous, not to mention fashionable, and the authors character descriptions are really good, you can totally visualize the hotness that is Finn, Dean, and Grey! The fight scenes are believable and the love story isn't too sappy. It is an easy book to read and is an easy story to follow that stays interesting from the first page. Highly recommend!
This was an enjoyable read. Chloe—the protagonist—is feisty and likable. Her struggle with the fact that she’s a witch is very believable. The male characters are to die for. Very hot! Add to that the mystery of folks going missing, the supernatural events around Chloe and her friends, the exciting actions, the different choices made in order to fight an unwanted destiny, and you have a great combination. I also enjoyed the romantic elements. They weren't gushy, just well-done. I would have liked for the book to be better formatted. It was a bit hard to read and sometimes required patience to try to figure out which characters were saying what. Nothing a little reformatting couldn't fix, though. Hopefully the author will look into correcting that issue.
The more I read, the more I wanted to read. I was enthralled with the pot and the characters. I've already purchased the next book in the series. It's also a quick read
~~I received this in exchange for an honest review~~
To start off with, this is a long book! I loved it! I didn't fly through this book like I normally would. I love it when a book will last me a few days! It keeps me invested and it keeps my interest.
This book has all kinds of mythical creatures in it, witches, shape shifters, elves and vampires. You can't go wrong with that many beings in one book. It only makes it that much better!
When you read this book, you are going to flash back to your first year in college. The jitters about your new roommate, and who will you sit next to in the dinner hall. You will also learn more about yourself in the first year that you ever would. Or at least that is what happens to Chloe, Finn, Dean, and Anita. They learn more and more about what they really are and how that will change their first year.
Im not going to give away anything that happens in the book. Just know that there is action, blood-lots and lots of blood, tons of growing up, and a love triangle.
The four of them are the next up and coming council, but there are people that need to be dealt with first. Can they come together and work as a team to help each other or will they be unable to put their differences aside and lose the ones they love the most?
This is the first book that I have read by K.D. Carrillo, I can tell you that this isn't going to be the last. K.D. knows how to keep the reader invested and wanting more. She holds on to you just to drop you at the end of the book on a cliff. Yes you read that right, there is a cliffhanger at the end of this book. But don't worry, There is a second one coming soon!!!
3.5 Stars!!!! This was such a cute, fun read with the twist of paranormal romance. Chloë is an eighteen year old venturing off to college to try and gain the experience of living life as a normal human. However, being a witch and capable of being the most powerful witch known that is likely not to happen. She immediately befriends Finn, Anita and Dean and soon find that they are all of supernatural as well.
Trouble starts brewing and students start to disappear. The four of them stick together to try and figure out what is going on while still trying to learn and accept who and what they are. Vampires are among them and they are starting a war.
Although I liked the plot I struggled with how I felt about this. I found it to be more on the YA side and unfortunately editing issues really bug me and there were a few of those. Also, it was confusing at times because it would have more than one character involved in a conversation but the paragraph just flowed and it was hard to keep track of who was saying what.
It was an enjoyable read with fiesty, smart, beautiful, sexy and funny characters. I laughed more than a few times because they were just funny with the shit they said joking and teasing each other. Overall, it had potential and was filled with action, a love triangle and sweet young love. I was looking forward to reading book two to find out what happens next.
I had to check if this was a young adult read.. I usually stay away from them. I love parnormal and witches.. ect.. This one is good the writing style seemed a bit young, meaning more as I said toward the young adult than adult. Almost like popping chewing gum, and bouncing on the balls of their feet... that doesnt mean it was bad, for me different than what I normally read. Oh oh Nancy Drew/Hardy boys!! and stir in things dashes of magic. Chole's life was pretty mapped out by her parents... or so they thought, She doesnt exactly tow the line that was drawn for her, she makes her own. Young sassy and full of spirt. You will adore her and her personality. As she gathers her friends around her... they learn and guide each other in the life that is ahead of them. It was a long read... some parts had to re read to get where it was going. I enjoyed the concept, the characters were likeable just needed to be filled out more. Find the happy medium between the length of the book and the charcters personalities understood. Because Ive read the first book, smiles which is a stand alone.. but Im curious enough to want to check out the second one. So well done Ms. Carillo... I’m interested in seeing what the next book brings...
This was just an okay book for me. I enjoyed the storyline. I just couldn’t get over the jumping between loves that Cloe did. First she’s crushing on Finn. Then Finn freaks and she turns to Grey. Then she decides to give Finn another chance. Then he pushes her away again and she runs to Grey again. Sheesh, I felt like I had whiplash. It did have a wide variety of paranormal species. It wasn’t just shifters or vampires, etc. I also liked that the friends had to learn to work together and use their abilities to defeat their foes. I laughed at the cattiness displayed by their “human” classmates.
On a final note, the book would benefit from editing and formatting. I had a lot of moments where I just asked myself “What?” It seemed that the characters would be doing one thing and all of a sudden they were somewhere totally different. I was confused at times.
This book is well written, although there is a few spelling mistakes. You will laugh and cry out whilst reading it due to a couple of twist happening.
The book follows four college students and a vampire. Chloe is a witch, Anita is a half vampire, Dean is a shape-shifter, Finn is an elf.
Strange happenings begin on campus. So the friends investigate and find forces they need help with, enter Grey the vampire that helped Anita when she was turned. Chloe can't decide who she wants to be with, either Finn or Grey, Anita and Dean become a couple as soon as they meet.
Will evil prevail or will they get their heads together to combat the evil.
This book can be read as a standalone but there is a book 2 soon. I received this book from the author and from Paranormal Romance and Authors That Rock.
I received this book from the author and from Paranormal Romance and Authors That Rock. Fighting Destiny is the first book K.D. Carrillo that I read and really liked it... I have always live paranormal books and love how she was able to mix witches, vampires, elfs and shifters and make then a coven. I wanna know more about Chloe and can't wait for her to make a decision of what she wants to do with her life and to follow her own destiny. I give this book 5 fangs and can't wait to read the next.
