Finally finished it and I wish I hadn't bothered. There was a warning of the violence contained herein, but it was more upsetting and (imo) more than needed to further the plot or create ambiance (unless the ambiance you wish to create is sickening). And the violence doesn't end in the first couple chapters as was suggested but continues almost constantly throughout the book. Frankly the long term effects of that kind of scarring is... well, not something you could EVER physically recover from, thus straining and finally braking my 'suspension of disbelief'.
For people with magical powers, they fall into the simplest of traps like the 3 Stooges. These are supposed to be uber powerful whatevers... sheesh. I guess I'd hoped the story would be intriguing enough to warrant the wallowing in horror, but no, it was like watching a Cronenberg movie... Nope, actually Cronenberg is worth the cringing (...more thought provoking).
Romantic?.... not. And why is all the sexual violence applied to women???

Just ick. I need to read something nice and fluffy now to scrub my brain clean.

So i managed to binge read almost all of this book in two days, finishing just before my deadline, like the champ i am.....

Anyways have to say this book had its moments. Some of it was really well written, I felt drawn into the interesting world and characters. The 3 different races were brilliant, not original in idea, but well thought out and for the most part well executed.
I love how passionate the witch race was and how horrendous and immoral the devil race was (even if i still think the name sounds weird) The human race was a little boring - but isnt that always the case? not that the human characters weren't great, but the race itself in comparison to the other two was a bit more bland.

The characters where entertaining, though the amount of sex in this book is a tad ridiculous. If i recall correctly the book even opens up on a sex scene? Then we have some horrid rape and torture and more rape, plus a death. Two weeks later the victim is screwing her 'mate; like a bunny after being imprisoned in the above scenario for 10 years? yea pretty far fetched.
Dont get me wrong the relationship was beautifully implemented and some of the things they said to each other gave me the feels, i just wished the author could have spread it (time period) out over a longer period, so the idea didn't seem so ridiculous, cause they did come off as a great couple that connected well. But the fact that the main character got over her severe abuse enough to have sex of her own free will in less than a month? nope i just can't run with that. Actually the book lost a star for this alone, even though besides the timing the after effects were handled rather well.

The change of POV was flawless and very well done - the name above, at the beginning of a chapter was extremely handy, but the characters themselves had different 'inner voices' so you could tell when you started reading who's POV you were reading from.

On another note i did notice a hint of Irish? Scottish throughout the book which i thought was a nice touch and something i rather enjoyed. I think Ireland comes off as a fairly magical place (must be the whole lepricorn thing) which mixed well with the rest on the story line, even though I'm under the impression the world is set in a completely made up place.

The book could have possibly ended a littler earlier as well - not that i didn't enjoy reading it! - but the twist with the shackle and the sister? bit much on top of everything else.

Overall a decent first book (if you can make it pass the brutal beginning and over look a few things) The characters made this book, and i enjoyed how the romance between the two main characters was innocent, we never seem to get enough of that in other adult books. yea it had its issues but the important thing is i enjoyed myself while reading and looked forward to picking up the book every time i put it down. I'm even looking forward to the next installment (though hopefully with less sex scene's).


Oh also in case i didn't point it out enough - if you cant read about abuse (physical, sexual and mental) DO NOT READ THIS BOOK. It is VERY violent and pretty fucked up. i probably wouldn't recommend it, even though i did enjoy the book itself once getting past the first few chapters.

Well what more could a girl want. witches. warlocks. devils and humans. This book has them all. The first two chapters are very intense I had tears in my eyes at the torture poor Ealasaid went through. It broke my heart .As she has given up on ever being rescued. Enters Raven a strong warlock that is her mate. He takes her home to help her heal and come back to her power. They are falling in love and mated . They must stop whoever wants her dead and as they work , they become stronger in love and in the end will they survive the onslaught .
This is the first book I have read from Patricia Eddy. I was very happy with the storyline. Patricia wove a story that kept me turning pages and begging for the characters to find peace and happiness. I had tears rolling down my cheeks when I was reading about the torture poor Elasaid went through . Her fight to come back had me cheering. The characters were very well written and the flow of the story was so good . You were transported to the world that felt very old but also modern at the same time .
You can feel the struggle of the main characters. the way that Elasaid is strong enough to pull herself together after the torture and the secret that Raven is keeping from. You just want to shout at him to tell her that she is his mate. It would make her strong I will warn you the graphic nature of the first two chapters in the book are very and I mean very intense. But once you get past those pages , you will find a beautiful love story with some magic and intrigue mixed in , Check this book out , I don't think you won't be disappointed . I wasn'ter . I know I did do a scream or two while reading this book.

I never thought I would like paranormal/romance . This book was Amazing there was so much going on from witches and warlocks to humans and devils it had a lot of magic and romance with a lot of spells , I loved how raven would protect Ealasaid after rescuing her from being tortured in the beginning and she never knew what being free was i'm so happy he found his mate I would recommend this book to my friends and family I read this book over a five day period .

Not even halfway through I had to write this author and fuss. I was reading on my break and crying; my timer went off and I had to get myself together before I could get back to my desk. That is how good this book is!

I really got into this book right away, the story of Elasaid the target of a powerful devil clan. They bind her, taking her name, her voice, and her magic. Shackled inside the cold, stone walls of the devil’s prison, tortured and abused, she pray

for a death she knows will not come.

A few times I had to give myself a break, some of these scenes were really intense, but the payoff and meeting Raven helped me get through some of the more 'raw' scenes. Raven, a warlock and powerful protector gives a casual promise to his king’s Council results in a life-changing discovery. He must free her the witch or his very life will be over.

Freed, Elsaid must learn how to trust again. But Raven with the face of a dark angel is hiding something — a secret that will give the witch the strength to help her to fulfill her destiny.

As she comes into her power, she will discover a pure truth that allows her to save herself and the man she loves.

This is the first book in the By the Fates trilogy.

Warning: This book contains disturbing and potentially offensive scenes including forced imprisonment, rape and physical and mental torture. Suitable for adult audiences only.


The Good:

This book is very well written, some of the 'raw' scenes I described above could have really turned me off, but they were tastefully done. You feel the heroine's pain, without being too weighed down. And later, when she is free, you will cry happy tears of joy with her as she discovers life. If that is not enough, than let me tell you that the characters are likeable and well written and the plot is a good pace so you can be introduced into this new world without having to go back to the beginning trying to define a term. I love bad guys and this had more than a few for me to choose from, Yay! Also a plus is the fact that there were no screaming errors; the book is well edited and there are no glaring plot holes either.

This book is told in the first person narrative of both main characters, I know that a lot of people don’t care for first person; I'm not one of them. However, for those that do, I felt that the break-up of point view really helps with the FP.


Diversity: Raven is Dusky, Marcus is dark skinned. Thank you for writing good diverse characters


The bad:

I just felt that the bad guys need a better comeuppance.

Firstly I would like to thank Patricia D. Eddy, author of By the Fates, Freed for giving me this wonderful opportunity of reading and reviewing this fabulous book.

I really felt and enjoyed the story and loved it a lot. A story of true love and the battle against all odds to save and secure the one person who is not only your love but also your life.

The story really touched me and I cried as well as shed tears of joy along with Elasaid, the young witch who was held captive and was abused mentally, emotionally as well as physically for a long time but then Raven, a warlock frees her and she tastes the beauty of freedom and life.

A great tale which is extremely well-written and the plot is well thought and executed. I loved the writing style of the author which really forged the emotional bond between myself and the well developed characters of the story.

The suspense is well kept till the end the the mystery and dark secrets that the author introduced really spiced up the story and the revelations of dreaded secrets shocked the readers and surprised them totally.

A fully recommended and must read for ya all and I hope that ya all will enjoy it as much as I did.

Witches, warlocks, devils and humans....what more could you ask for.....Love, despair, brutality, hope, and did mention Love? All this is found in "By the Fates, Freed".....this is a wonderfully written book filed with action, romance and magic! Looking forward to the next book in this series....to see what the Fates have in store for Ealasaid and Raven.

I would say first that there is a trigger warning, however the book is much more violent and dark than one would think. There is rape and PTSD issues throughout. Which makes sense, because the character was brutally raped for 10 years. So how could there not??

I enjoyed the writing. I think Eddy has a great way with words and I really felt connected initially to the story through the writing. It flowed very well. But then it would lull for a couple of chapters. Then more action, lull, action. I get that it can't be action all the time, but I wish it hadn't lulled. But rather still be interesting, just not actiony. I also think it could have gone a little more in depth explaining how her PTSD worked. I'm very intrigued to understand character's brains and I'd really love to have picked apart Ealasaid's brain. Overall it was a book that I thought was interesting and sticking with it I am glad I got to the ending. Just beware of super violence and lulls.

What an original world and an interesting tale. This story takes place in a world shared equally by humans, witches/warlocks and devils. Each has their own king and their own representative on the council. Ealasaid is an unusual witch who also has devil magic. Normally a child of two different races takes after only one. Ealasaid is witch prophecies were written about decades ago and there are powerful people who want to ensure the prophecy doesn't come to pass.

There are some torture and rape scenes at the beginning of the book. Most of the violence happens when she is unconscious. There are references to the abuse later in the story but not in any detail. The author does a great job of convincing the reader how a woman who had experienced such torture could be interested in a relationship. She also builds this incredible world full of mystery and culture. The plot is full of twists and turns you won't see coming. I definitely want to see where this story goes.

I enjoyed the story of Raven and Ealasaid and their binding love. I thought the story was well written and the characters were wonderfully developed. Other than being lost and not understanding some references, it was an enjoyable read. I believe the lack of understanding comes from not having read much paranormal in the past, so some terms were strange to me. I did my best not to allow that to cloud my enjoyment of the book and would recommend this to anyone who is a fan of this genre. Patricia Eddy is a marvelous writer who can weave a story better than most. Enjoy!

I'm somewhat on the fence about this book. The author was very up front about the abuse and violence in this book, but I feel it was unnecessarily taken to the extreme. I understand wanting the reader to empathize with the protagonist's past, but I thought it carried on longer than needed to make the point.

That said, I loved the characters in this story, and the plot was unique and interesting. Some conflicts seemed a little too easily solved, so some tension was lost, but over all, this is a very promising series. My 3.5 rating is rounded up due to potential long-term story line, and the mixed cast of characters.

This story comes in so hard and fast, I was almost thrown off balance. Some pretty nasty stuff happens to the main character in the first few chapters, but here's the thing: it happens so fast you never get the chance to truly connect or feel bad for her. Then the same thing happens when she meets Raven. BOOM they are mates and it's so clinical I never had that awwww moment. It's also so dry with all the spells and whatnot that I never got too excited about it.

This is the 1st in a series, but I probably will never read the others. It's a great concept, I just don't think it was executed that well.

She was a witch and lost it when he collared her.Raven is introduced to her to pay a debt. He frees her. The devil clan of Kendrick is responsible for all the pain and suffering. Will she be collared again ? Will she be able to mate with Raven ? Will their sister Ami ever be safe ?

it is a quite dark book with even some scenes of torture but it is so different and interesting that deserves to be read.

What a great story, action packed, full of intrigue, betrayal, hope and love. Such an exciting tale that was hard to put down. A little dark at the beginning, but finally Ealasaid & Raven overcome many hardships to be together, they deserve happiness. The action scenes are well written and keep your interest from start to finish. I look forward to reading the next book in this series.

OMGosh! This story grabbed me from the beginning and wouldn't let go! This was a story of pain, fear, hope and love, and I am so glad I read this. Patricia Eddy is a master of storytelling! Do not-I repeat do not try to start this at night. You. Will. Not. Sleep!!! I am so excited to see what happens next!
