This is such an incredibly educational read! In May of 2011, I suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury and was diagnosed with a Diffuse Axonal Injury. 90% of people with this injury never regain consciousness. The information in this book is hands down phenomenal. There's so much information I never heard of before in this book, and I consider myself pretty well-read in this whole health-minded subculture. So many things are explained in this book which made questions I'd been wondering about for years click for me. Loads of great info about all things functional neurology related- how autoimmunity, hormones, inflammation, injuries, blood sugar issues, lack of oxygen, etc. affect brain health. It's encouraging to see how much can be done to help the brain to recover and improve.
However, now I'm a little paranoid whenever I have brain farts because I know that it's nothing to ignore.

I am very interested in alternative medicines for treating the body and the mind. This is definitely worth reading if you are feeling mentally and physically "off" and want an alternative approach to the overly prescribed antidepressants and other prescription drugs that our doctors push on us. I think every human should read this book. I can't say enough. I have been a patient in the alternative medicine world for about 25 years (because basically NO ONE in the western medicine world could help me or tell me that there was anything wrong. I've read a lot on this topic, but this is the most organized and thorough title I've read. It seemed to answer questions I had about why my past attempts at anti inflammatory eating (Whole30) didn't work. It explained why just taking 5-htp and l-tyrosine didn't work. Personally I'm tackling fibromyalgia, depression and anxiety. I now have a new approach I can try. My family and close friends may get very tired of hearing me recommend this book. After years of trying to find a doctor who really understands my autoimmune disorders, I finally stumbled on this book and its very knowledgeable author. This book was very interesting and informative, but I did raise my eyebrow at the parts that pretty much turned gluten and dairy products into heinous villains. Although the author does state that the problems with food containing these two affect people who are intolerant to them, it still felt that they were turned into the core of all brain deficiencies. Okay, this book was deeply insightful full or research knowledge and tips. However, I would not recommend it if you are not somebody who already has a strong working knowledge of the body. The only exception to his would be if you have clear symptoms and know what you're looking for and use it as a reference book. And this would be an excellent reference book. Otherwise, if you're reading it for fun the answer to Why Isn't My Brain Working will probably be "Because I'm reading this book."

One of the best practical books I've read. What the book says makes a lot of sense and reminds me to start watching my diet. I already feel the difference just by avoiding certain food mentioned in the book for a week. Highly recommended if you want to keep your brain sharp and have a higher quality life.
This book really scared me, but it was full of great information. I thought it was readable also considering how complicated the subject is. I still feel confused about how to implement a plan without being able to see a doctor that understands this as well, but I got a lot of great ideas to try.

So, so, so close to a 5 star rating but the excessive testimonies littered throughout the book began to feel like the author was BEGGING me to believe what he was saying, it was just too over the top. Truthfully if he had just 5 testimonies or examples in the first chapter and then possibly 2 testimonies in the subsequent chapters, I would have found the book just as valid. "Bob, 52, was a truck driver. He was 250 pounds overweight, had severe depression, diabetes, anxiety, panic attacks, literal demons crawling out of his asshole, and after years of visiting doctors and alternative health practitioners, who had prescribed him some anti-depressants, I made sure that, rather than eating garbage, and also no gluten, he ate food and engaged in some form of exercise. One of the most comprehensive health books I have ever read. It took me some time to get through because, brain isn't working! And while he simplifies very complicated concepts, there is a lot of material to digest. But this is the sort of book you may need to reread. This isn't the first book I have read that deals with a holistic approach to health but this book stands apart from most and is one of the most empowering books I have read. If you have any hypochondriac tendencies, don't read this, it will drive you further insane.

If you are thinking to read this as an audiobook- forget it, it is too dense and there are too many hormone, and drug names in here for none practitioners to follow. ( my mistake )

Fundamentally I found too many potential symptoms and worries that would be found in any normal human to be able to differentiate if this is science or quackery. The author is convincing but also uses many tricks of the charlat

Having just learned that many of my health issues have been due to an autoimmune disorder, I found this book to be extremely helpful in giving many ideas and suggestions of how to help keep my body from attacking itself and how to feel better over all. Putting them all into regular practice is another story, of course. While this book was not relevant to my immediate health, it is a really important book for people dealing with or at risk for auto immune disorders, hormone imbalances, brain fog, chemical sensitivities, and many other issues that are not reflected in the title. Adding it to alongside comparable book Never Be Sick Again.

Very insightful for someone without a medical background. With made it a bit harder to understand at times but in the end I was still able to take a great deal from this book.

This is quite possibly the best book on health I have ever read! I used to be a fan of Julia Ross, but Kharrazian's book just blew me away. It definitely is the most accessible and fun read on neuro-health and nutrition. Mind you it is a very thick book- took me more than a week to finish it.. but if you are genuinely interested in this topic you would not at all find it dry , I almost look forward to reading it!

Incredible insights into the relationship between your physical and mental health. Easy to read with stories from patients to illustrate the concepts. I picked up the book to learn about the effects of stress and ways to help mitigate the impact on my health and now I reference it often.

“I first met this young client when he was eight years old. He was very shy with a calm disposition. He had been diagnosed with a sensory processing disorder and his parents had hired a special tutor. His mother and father were already clients of mine, and his mother was very conscientious with his diet. She was most concerned about his extreme fatigue, how difficult it was to get him up in the morning, and how difficult it was for him to fall asleep. He was also falling asleep at school. In addition, she was concerned he was having difficulty remembering his schoolwork. With sensory processing disorder, children may have difficulty concentrating, planning and organizing, and responding appropriately to external stimuli. It is considered to be a learning disorder that fits into the autism spectrum of disorders. To target his diet and nutritional supplementation, I recommended a comprehensive blood panel, an adrenal profile, a food sensitivity panel, and an organic acids profile to determine vitamin, mineral, and energy deficiency status. His blood panel indicated low thyroid function, iron deficiency, and autoimmune thyroid. His adrenal profile indicated adrenal fatigue. His organic acids test indicated low B vitamins and zinc, low detoxification capacity, and low levels of energy nutrients, particularly magnesium. He was also low in omega-3 fatty acids and sensitive to gluten, dairy, eggs, and corn. Armed with all of that information, he and I worked together to develop a diet based on his test results. I like to involve children in the designing of their diet. That way they get to include the foods they like, learn how to make healthy substitutions for foods they love but can no longer eat, and learn how to improve their overall food choices. He also learned he needed to include protein at all meals, have snacks throughout the day, and what constitutes a healthy snack. I recommended he start with a gut restoration protocol along with iron support; food sensitivities often go hand in hand with leaky gut issues. This would also impact brain function. In the second phase of his program, I added inositol and serotonin support for sleep, thyroid support, DHA, glutathione support (to help regulate autoimmunity), a vitamin and mineral complex, fish oils, B-12, licorice extract for his adrenals, and dopamine and acetylcholine support to improve his concentration, energy, and memory. Within a month, his parents reported that he was falling asleep easily and would wake up with energy in the morning. His concentration improved, as did his ability to remember what he had learned at school. He started to play sports in the afternoon and took the initiative to let his mom know what foods not to include in his diet.
