Snark and Circumstance #2

Charm and Consequence

Rate this book
Sixteen-year-old Georgia Barrett is no expert on guys, but her bio-class partner is harder to dissect than anything in their lab tray. He’s smart, almost as sarcastic as she is, and cute in that preppie way. Things are great . . . until he decides her vegan activism is ridiculous and suddenly can’t refuse a date with her fast enough. So why does he show up at her door, interested in learning how to make tofu ricotta? And why does he seem so upset that a senior hottie has taken an interest in her? Could he be interested in Georgia after all?

4-1/2 Stars. Charm and Consequence picks up where Snark and Circumstance left us. Georgia's older sister, Tori, is still cozy with newcomer, Trey, younger sister, Cassie, is still tight with Rick "the Brick" and even uber-conservative, Leigh, is getting her neck bruised by Alistair, the preacher's son. Georgia is still sadly single, at least until hot and hunky Jeremy begins to show flirtatious interest in her. On top of that, things with Michael Endicott are getting interesting. Instead of fighting every chance they get, they're actually having interesting, thoughtful discussions.

Plot
The second book in the Snark and Circumstance series is still centered around Georgia's relationship with Michael. At the end of book 1, they seemed to tame some of their animosity enough to allow an almost friendship to begin to take root. But any good teen romance wouldn't be complete without a healthy dose of angst as Georgia and Michael go back and forth in twisted seesaw fashion between almost flirting to outright animosity. Things reach the pinnacle of interesting when Georgia attends the Harvest Ball and is invited to dance by both Michael and Jeremy. And they go from interesting to downright fascinating the night of the New Year's Eve party.

World Building
We get to learn a little more about the world of Longbourne and understand some of the social hierarchy of a small town with it's own version of royalty. I have to admit, living in a big city, this isn't something I'm familiar with, but I found it fascinating nonetheless.

Characters
The character development continues, as Stephanie Wardrop fleshes out the characters she introduced in Snark and Circumstance. I'm getting to know Georgia even more, and I really like her. Sure she can be annoying, but her heart is in the right place most of the time. Michael is also growing on me and I think I learned more about him in this book than any of the other characters. I still find Cassie and Leigh, along with their parents to be pretty flat. I'm hoping that changes soon.

Top Five Things I Enjoyed About Charm and Consequence
1. Georgia I'm still loving Georgia's quick wit and sense of humor.

2. Tori. She goes through a bit of an emotional upheaval this time around, and we get to see more sides to her, rounding her out nicely.

3. Michael. He's even more layered than I thought, and though he has many faults, he's definitely one of the good guys.

4. New Year's Eve. The party is particularly interesting as it so accurately reflects a teen party and builds to an interesting conclusion.

5. Philosophical Discussions. Because they lead to better understanding of characters across the board.

Bottom Line
I enjoyed Charm and Consequence more than its predecessor. Stephanie Wardrop increases the stakes and draws out the main characters, creating conflict in all the right ways.

When I first met him (Michael) at the beginning of the year and found out that I would have to be his lab partner in bio and the year-long series of projects in AP English, I seriously considered taking night school classes and getting a GED just to avoid him. ~Georgiana Barrett

Since completing Snark and Circumstance, I've been eagerly awaiting the second enovella in the series, Charm and Consequence, and Stephanie did not disappoint. This title goes perfectly with the storyline considering the new character, Jeremy, who comes along and shakes things up a bit. Georgia's still snarky as ever, and still has a big, emotional, uncontrollable mouth; but like in the first installment, this helps you understand where she's coming from. She also struggles with being the "different" daughter. ( I suppose I look acceptable, the black (haired) sheep among the Barrett blondes.), and chooses to remain true to herself even when there are consequences in choosing to do so.

As Charm and Consequence progresses, Georgia begins to tolerate Michael. Her snark is slightly overshadowed by situations with Jeremy, in order for the title's theme to take precedence, and this makes things very interesting, leading up to yet another cliffhanger leaving you anticipating #3 in the series. (Should she pick the "bad boy"? Or the one that may or may not even like her? Readers who know Jane Austen's stories probably already know the answer.)

Though I love Georgia's strong attitude, I love the fact that she's still a normal teenager dealing with normal teenage things even more.

I will probably die a misunderstood virgin like Ophelia in HAMLET, only I won't do it by floating down a stream, singing my own mad song. They'll just find me here, on my bed, on a weekend night, my dead body slumped over a homework assignment.

Hopefully they'll discover me before Teeny eats my remains.

Another example:

...and while Trey and Tori include me in their conversation about some school stuff, I still feel like the table's appendix, an unnecessary appendage.

Silly Georgia. She doesn't *want* to be alone. She just doesn't know how to control her mouth.

As usual, Stephanie's descriptions crack me up. I always find myself a little sad when I reach the end, and can't wait to read what happens between Georgia, Michael and Jeremy in the next installment.

Charm and Consequence picks up right after the ending of Snark and Circumstance. Georgia has written an article about ethical reasons to go vegan and she's experiencing quite a bit of harassing because of it. Michael is giving her a hard time, but it a teasing way. They've begun to overcome their initial issues and started to become friends. Until, that is, he blatantly turns down an invitation for a double-date with her and her sister and her sister's boyfriend, his friends, with no excuse. Georgia finds herself incredibly mortified and more than a little offended.
"I will probably die a misunderstood virgin like Ophelia in Hamlet, only I won't do it by floating down a stream, singing my own mad song. They'll just find me here, on my bed, on a weekend night, my dead body slumped over a homework assignment."

As Georgia's sisters continue dating the guys in their lives, she continues to feel more and more left out. Then she meets Jeremy Wrentham, Michael's former prep school classmate, and things start to change. They have a bit of chemistry and she's interested in seeing where it goes. Michael's jealous, though he won't admit it. Jeremy is just too suave. I never got a good feeling from him. Of course, that could be because I was solidly on the Georgia/Michael ship, too. :) Georgia and Michael do have some cute moments in this novella. They're obviously into each other. One of them just needs to step up.
"I finally sink into a troubled sleep knowing one thing: Michael Endicott is a mystery I need to solve."

The second novella in this series continues this storyline well. I am hooked on the characters and the story. Charm and Consequences ended rather abruptly, but it was ok by me. Of course, knowing I had an ARC of the third novella certainly helped. Fortunately for anyone interested in this series - or for those who have been following along already - the third novella, Pride and Prep School, releases tomorrow. :)

Charm and Consequence is the second book in author Stephanie Wardrop's Snark and Circumstance series. This book continues from the first book and if you're going to give these books a try, I'd suggest you definitely read the first one before.
Georgia, the MC, is still is high school and she's actually doing good unless you count the fact that all her sisters seem to be doing great with boys while she is just lagging behind. She meets a few boys here and there, for eg., her friends at school, her partner in some of her classes Michael and this new guy Jeremy who she meets and kind of likes. Well, there are times when you get a feeling who the MC is going to end up with in terms of lovers and my bet is on Michael. He and Georgia are really good for one another but we don't really get to know that because this book, like it's prequel, ended quite suddenly without any specific hindsight.
I really wish there's more to come in this series, because honestly, it's good. The writing is good, the story is good, the set up is good and the characters are good too. It's just that the space given isn't enough. And I still don't get the point of the books.
I'd suggest these books for quick reads when you're somewhere out alone in a public place waiting for something- those moments when you just need any book to keep you occupied until it's your turn to do what you have to do or maybe read it on a lazy Sunday like I did.

Full of more prideful encounters, more scathing prejudices, Charm and Consequence is a delightful, albeit too short, second installment in the Snark and Circumstance novella series. I love the stoic, unreadable, but not so unreadable Michael. I love Georgia in all her ethically superior, snark-filled, self-righteousness. And I love the tension and chemistry between the two.

Georgia’s character is just so fantastically written — her elitism making her so potentially unlikable. And yet, while she’s without a doubt abrasive, her narration proves she’s only human and admirably full of conviction. And when it comes right down to it, who hasn’t, in their lifetime, been annoyingly self-important or overly-zealous? Especially as a teen when the world appears so black and white. I also love how Georgia’s determined to see Michael as completely detestable, and yet…

And yet… she cannot stop trying to puzzle him out.

With new characters, rumors of a country club ball (the horror!), and the surprising discovery that chivalry is, in fact, not quite dead (despite evidence to the contrary), much hilarity and drama ensues in this fantastic sequel.

They should have been one book but they were was still pretty good. I'm a fan of Jane Austen and Jane Austen retellings so keep that in mind. However, aside from feeding my Jane Austen craving, I thought the characters were well developed, the story had enough happening that my interest was peaked throughout all 4 volumes, and the overall writing style was smooth and easy to read. Georgia, the Elizabeth-like character, was occasionally a bit over-zealous with her veganisms but that was kind of the point. She was like a sledgehammer trying to do a feather's job. Michael, the Darcy-like character was much more redeemable then I initially expected him to be and even attractive in a "I'm not perfect but I'm loveable anyway" kind of way. Both characters were like that actually. The story doesn't exactly retell P&P but uses it as a general template and borrows names. I thought it was well done. It should have been 1 book instead of 4 in my opinion but I guess it's a nice nod to the volume style of publishing of Jane Austen' s time. I definitely recommend all 4 volumes to readers with a love for Jane Austen retellings and I will likely read them again in the future.

I've been so excited for the sequel to Snark & Circumstance, it lived up to all my expectations. Charm and Consequence was fabulous! I'm a sucker for retellings, and Stephanie Wardrop stayed true enough to the Austen classic to satisfy die-hard fans, while putting her own spin on the characters in a way that makes them absolutely charming. Georgia's voice has all the snark of Princess Diaries' Mia Thermopolis, tempered with the angst and sensitivity we all felt as teenagers. And Michael is the perfect mysterious foil to Georgia's feigned disinterest. Charm and Consequence is a brilliant take on Austen's classic, told with the engaging voice and fresh perspective of an amazing new author. I can't wait for the next installment!

This is the second book in the Snark and Circumstance series, and I DEVOURED it!

This modern retelling of Pride and Prejudice is a perfect summer read. Georgia Barrett, the modern Elizabeth, has progressed from outright hatred of the wealthy, hard-to-read Michael Endicott into confused interest. Is he a handsome jerk? Is he secretly noble? As Georgia gets the chance to know more about Michael, she finds herself questioning her initial impressions of the pretty rich boy. Readers will adore Michael long before Georgia does, and this is a quick, charming read that will delight readers of contemporary romance, as well as Jane Austen fans.

I loved this novella, and I can’t wait to read more from Wardrop and Swoon.

I'm lucky I bought all four novellas in one swoop! waiting would have angered me I just know it.

So now I'm on to the third one, however still wishing it had just been one big book, but that's okay I'll live and get through it ;-)

These are fun, cute and quick reads that should appeal to any young romantic at heart.

Cute and fluffy story continuation from book 1. This is also not a complete book. It was a fun read overall.
