This is a 20,000 word novella set in the world of WOOL, published with author Hugh Howey's permission. Three more parts to come!
****************
Five years have passed since the airlock slammed shut on the 4,000 souls condemned to live in the Silo.
Karma can remember now that there was a time before--before she was locked into this cylindrical tomb under the earth. But all she can see of the outside are dead hills and the dark clouds swirling through what remains of a toxic world.
She clings to this barren life not for herself but simply to keep her child safe… and to preserve the forbidden truths about what has been lost. Among the lost is her friend Andy, the first person sent out to Clean.
Sent out to die.
With every step and every stair, Karma vows to survive so that her memories of the world that once existed will live on in those who come after.
Patrice Fitzgerald is an indie author, publisher, attorney, and intergalactic singer of songs. She has been publishing herself and others since 2011 and is the force behind the BEYOND THE STARS series of space opera anthologies. Patrice is thrilled to introduce Captain Wu and her STARSHIP NAMELESS crew in her most recent trilogy, written with the inimitable Jack Lyster.
This is the second installment of the of Karma’s life in the Wool universe. Karma continues to remember who she was in her prior life along with some others. There are a series of “suicides” that happen but Karma wonders if that’s what they really are. This is when the first cleaning is instituted. I equally enjoyed being in the Wool universe since Hugh Howey is wrapping up the series. I used to despise short stories since it seems that it leaves you with only wanting more. Patrice does a great job at sucking you into this world and leaving you feeling satisfied without being left hanging. I already picked up the third installment.
The second part of the story of where Helen's life took her after entering the Silo. I really felt for the young ones in this part of the story. Well written and staying true to the Wool tradition, its an excellent addition to the story.
