Adam was a jerk more than once. I understand he was hurt but that's no excuse to insult the woman you supposedly love.
James angered me with the way he talked about Olivia. That's not a way a gentelman should talk about a lady, especially one who is a relative of his wife.
I think Olivia should have made Adam work to win her forgiveness and earn her trust.

2.5 stars because the author can actually write.

At the time I read this, the names of the characters in the book are different from those given in the synopsis – Huntington is Adam Rycroft and the heroine is Olivia Dewhurst in the ARC I have received, so those are the name I’m going to use here.

This fifty page novella wasn’t bad but it wasn’t great either. The writing shows that the author is more than technically competent, but to produce a well-plotted and emotionally satisfying novella is very difficult, and I don’t think Ms McKinley has pulled it off in this story.

It revolves around two characters – Olivia Dewhurst and Adam Rycroft - who fell in love when they were younger, but who couldn’t marry because of the desperate need of money on the part of Olivia’s family. In order to help shore up the family finances, Olivia had to jilt Adam in favor of a man with money and a title. Unfortunately, however, in the way of the best laid plans, all came to naught when Lord Moneybags got stung by a bee and died, presumably of anaphylactic shock. (Any long-time reader of historical romance will immediately think of Julia Quinn’s Bridgerton books at the mention of that – it’s rare enough to stick in the memory.)
Not surprisingly, Adam was none too happy at being abandoned by the woman he loved for such mercenary reasons, and now, two years later, and also in possession of money and a title himself, he’s back and wants to exact revenge.

Revenge which consists of getting into the heroine’s knickers.

Adam is devilishly gorgeous, naturally, and he’s never got over Olivia, even though he’s still pissed at her for dumping him for someone with better prospects. Olivia is still gagging for it at Adam’s hands (and other parts of him!), but continues to deny the attraction, even though by the end of chapter two, she’s let him snog her, fondle her lady-parts and hike up her skirts and swat her arse with his riding crop.

Which might possibly be why he doesn’t believe her denial of her feelings for him any more than I did.

Most of the page count is taken up with a cat-and-mouse game between Adam and Olivia that you just know he’s going to win, although towards the end, there’s an attempt to heighten the dramatic tension with a couple of quickly inserted plot elements which felt rushed and unnecessary.

I’m beginning to think I should just steer clear of novellas unless they’re written by Courtney Milan, Meredith Duran, Tessa Dare, or other writers I know can do justice to a story within a shorter format. So many of the novellas I’ve read lack depth in terms of story and characterization, and I’m afraid this was one of them.

On the positive side, Ms McKinley has clearly tried to give her characters some back story, and had she had the opportunity to put some more flesh on the bare bones of this second-chance romance, then I think the result could have been quite enjoyable. Her writing flows well; there were signs that she is able to write more-than-decent dialogue and I thought the friendship between Adam and his friend, Wood, showed promise when it came to writing characters and relationships other than those between the hero and heroine of the story.

The book is billed as an “erotic romance”, but other than that bit of bum-slapping I mentioned, there was nothing here that you wouldn’t find in a “standard” historical romance.

Overall, I found A Countess by Chance to be rather disappointing. The writing was good on the whole, but the characterization lacked depth and the pacing felt off, due to the developments near the end which made the whole thing seem unbalanced.

That said, I would consider reading a full-length novel by Ms McKinley, as I think she has the potential to succeed within the confines of a longer format.

A sweet and hot historical romance novella, A Countess by Chance was a lovely read. I really liked the first book in this trilogy and I liked this one just as much.

Both of the main characters were great. Olivia was strong and determined to do what was best for her family, even if it meant sacrificing her own happiness. Adam was sweet and, even when he was trying to get Olivia back for leaving him, he was still an obviously good man. I liked that both characters made mistakes, but they both owned up to them and did their best to fix them. I really liked Olivia and I thought Adam was adorable.

The romance was sweet and super steamy. Olivia and Adam had been in love when their relationship broke off, and those feelings didn't go away, which I thought was sweet. And, the chemistry between them was very hot. Definitely some fan-your-face moments. I thought they were lovely together.

The plot was fast paced and I was hooked the entire way through. I really enjoyed the story and the ending was lovely. I can't wait to read the last novella in this trilogy!

A Countess by Chance was a fantastic historical romance read. I totally loved this wonderful novella. Romance lovers, this is a must read.

*Please note the heroine’s name does not match the blurb.

Starring Olivia Dewhurst and Adam Rycroft, Earl of Huntington. Jilted hero, wager, enemies to lovers tropes.

I have re-read this novella over and over again... and Adam and Olivia give me the feels every single time. I love their cat and mouse game. They are totally hot for each other, but past hurt is making them lash out at one other. It’s ok, they sort it out to get their HEA in the end... and it’s delicious. This is an absolutely fun read.

James Leventhorpe (Olivia’s Cousin in Marriage) is a fantastic comic relief in the series. He gives the worst advice in the world... he’s a hoot!!

The By Invitation Only series are all stand-alones, but the novellas are interconnected.

My star rating: 5 stars
This novella is on my “All time favorite re-read” list. The storyline keeps me entertained. I fall in love with the characters over and over again. This book makes my heart happy.

My review contains spoilers and they're mostly my thoughts as I went with the book...

The second book of Kate McKinley’s By Invitation Only series, A Countess by Chance, was nice and short and as usual, I liked the author’s writing style. I was enough engrossed in this story to read on. But I didn’t think it was really memorable in any way.

This story is set in the same house party that we saw in book 1, A Duchess in the Dark. If you haven’t read book 1, you might wanna try that to learn how ‘smart’ our host James is. You’ll find more proof of his ‘smartness’ here as well aka more lame advises on how to detect a girl who has recently been diverged of her virginity. Don’t.even.ask!

Adam, our H, the new Earl of Huntington joins in. He attends, only to find that woman of his dreams, the woman who tormented him for the last 2 years after jilting him for a better prospect, Olivia, is also attending this house party. Adam is determined to taunt her to have a little fun at her expense. Can’t say I blamed him all that much when I learned of what Olivia did to him. However, being a girl, I also understood why Olivia had to do it in order for a suitor with better financial prospect than Adam's at that time. Adam certainly hadn’t forgotten, just as Olivia herself.

Olivia had to do it because of her family. Their attraction was apparent since the first meeting on James and Margaret’s wedding (come to think of it, the pair of book 1 also first met at the same wedding :/) and though she wanted Adam, Olivia had no other option. IMO, this whole story of Olivia jilting Adam is a bit vague as the story moves forward from page 1. Olivia keeps saying she feels guilty of what she did, yet I didn’t think she really regretted it. Her admissions of guilt were not that prominent. I particularly didn’t like her thoughts on trapping unsuspecting people present at the house party to play a hand of whist with her so that she can win some money and help her family. Her the then suitor has died of an unfortunate bee attack and she has been embroiled in scandal because of the way she was found with him... with an almost dead man, mind you! She doesn’t have many prospects anymore due to that scandal.

No matter, Adam was hurt back then. Things have certainly changed for him as he’s now rich and titled. This is his chance to turn the table on Olivia, right?

While Adam is contemplating about it, Olivia decides to rely on her not-so-perfect witty self to breeze through it all and ignore Adam for the duration of the house party. However, that proves impossible once Adam is in her view and all she can think of how, once, she liked being touched or kissed by him... better yet, how much she just wants to throw herself at him. When this tormenting-business goes a little out of hand (a$$ spanking can do that to people ;p), Adam finds that he, after all these years, still wants Olivia in his life. But Olivia... um, she’s still unsure, though she lets Adam kiss and fondle her.

I know, Adam has said some unfortunate stuff to her in front of the people, and I’d definitely slap him for the one about that particular scandal but I thought Olivia deserved some of those on her own.

The debacle at the end with one very determined girl, who has been after Adam since the day he arrived and the subsequent duel seemed too convenient to get the distractions out of the story. And Olivia’s recklessness was not at all commendable, no matter the reason. I remember reading the same thing in another story and I was annoyed at the heroine just the same because the hero gets shot, thanks to her.

Overall, I could see the attraction between Adam and Olivia and I thought there were some enjoyable moments but that’s about it. I wasn’t really sure of how much of this ‘lust’ between them was actually ‘love’.

I do understand it’s tough to pull off a story with a sense of completion in a novella-length book but that’s where the author’s expertise lies. In my defense I can only say, I’ve read better. 3.5 stars just because I’m still interested in book 3 in hopes of a better, more engaging storyline.

Personally I thought the first book was much better. Compared to the first book, thus one seemed a bit rushed and the "romance" felt forced.

Adam and Olivia have a history and the author does a good job of outlining what happened between them - but only in the most bare bones way possible. I didn't feel like I had enough information to decide if I really believed they were in love and neither one says the words in this book. Olivia thinks it and Adam loves things about Olivia - but the declaration was absent.

It was short - but it's a novella, so I didn't expect a full length story. But the first one was so good - I expected at least the same level of story depth and didn't get it.

This novella was totally stand alone and barely connected to the first book - so if you are worried that you might be lost starting with this book - rest assured that is not going to be an issue.

Finally, I thought James was a bit stupid in the first book (in a sweet, what an idiot sort of way) and he continues his stupidness in this book. The funny thing (or maybe sad thing) is my husband has friends like James and therefore it made it easy for me to believe that smart men can take really stupid advice to heart :)

Different story from its description/blurb?

>In description of Kindle edition:
·heroine is Sophia Weathersby
·hero, Adam Greyson
·In wager, heroine used her gaming table skills
and she bet her virtue

>In book:
·heroine is Olivia Dewhurst
·hero, Adam Rycroft
·wager has nothing to do with gaming skills and lovers were somewhat intimate previously

I ordered this book because I like regency romances as well as the occasional erotic love story. The author did deliver the erotica.

Unfortunately fans of the genre will notice that the author has read little, if any, regency romances. The errors are obvious even to a layman, like myself.

I found I was more interested in how a well-bred Lady met a Tradesman at a ball than the romance. Also had more interest in the story behind her Family's well-known impoverished Estate and her Father's status of a retired gambler.

2 stars because erotica seemed decently written, plus I didn't finish book.
The first short story in the series encouraged me to buy this one. I'm not sure if I want to attempt to finish the book, or ask for a refund of my 99 cents. (Leaning towards the refund)

Another cute By Invitation Only novella about a second chance romance. Olivia and Adam were once in love. But in order to save her family from ruin, Olivia leaves Adam hanging for a titled man. Two years later, the tables have turned, leaving Olivia still unmarried and Adam returning as the newly Earl of Huntington bent on some sweet revenge. This story is actually at the same house party of A Duchess in the Dark which was kind of cute, since we get to see snippets of where the stories line up with each other.

The romance wasn’t bad, though very typical and formulaic. Adam is your typical hero who’s hellbent on getting revenge only to be sidetracked by the his unwavering desire for her, while embarrassed Olivia, tries to deny the attraction only to fall under Adam’s charms. The story was a short and easy read, and overall it was enjoyable if not also but a bit forgettable.

**3.5 Stars**

A Countess by Chance by Kate McKinley was a good read overall although I thought it fell short compared to A Duchess in the Dark. While the first installment was well-delivered as a complete story, A Countess by Chance needed a little more extra. I felt that the story ended abruptly and for that it left me quite unsatisfied. Unlike the first installment, I needed this story to be longer as it felt unfinished.

Furthermore, while I did enjoy the hero I can't say the same for the heroine of this story. I thought she was immature and acted childish that I couldn't much tolerate.

In the end A Countess by Chance was a good story, but it did have its flaws as well. For the most part I did enjoy this light regency novella and will be looking forward to Kate McKinley's next story in the series.

Lately, I've been reading very long books about heavy topics. I wanted a break. I wanted something fun and quick, that I could finish before going to bed. I read the first story Kate McKinley's By Invitation Only series, so felt pretty confident that I'd enjoy this as well.

It's a cute, short story. The couple split up years ago and run into each other at a party. I enjoy reading stories like this, in these fun settings, someone's big, fancy house, with everyone just playing games and dancing. Sounds so nice.

Anyway, they see each other, and the attraction is still there, but there's also quite a bit of anger. As you can imagine, they work through this. Very hot and sexy scene in the library. I do love libraries.

I liked this. It's exactly the sort of story I wanted. Short and sweet and hot. Will continue to read this series.

I received a copy of this via NetGalley.

Anyone else remember that deliciously awful song from South Park that Kenny sings about the Virgin Mary? Well, this book kept reminding me of that song. It sort of kills me that an erotic novella could be so obsessed with virginity, but maybe that's just a nod to the historical setting. Compared to some of the excellent novellas I've read, this book certainly falls short. The characters, while showing promise, are a tad underdeveloped, sometimes acting without any clear motivation. The transitions between scenes tend to the abrupt; speaking of abrupt: the ending. BUT. I had a lot of fun reading it. From unfortunate bee incidents to unexpected duels to man-shaped ferns to the "virginal" miss who's done everything but (and possibly everything butt) and really enjoys being spanked, what's not to enjoy?

Another couple finds love at the same house party featured in A Duchess in the Dark, the first novella in the erotic historical series, By Invitation Only, by Kate McKinley. Events from the first book happen here, although peripherally, with different protagonists.

Adam and Olivia were once sweethearts before she jilted him. Unbeknownst to him, her family has been in need of funds due to her mother’s poor health. At the time, Adam was the younger son of an earl with few prospects but now he’s the Earl of Huntington when they meet again two years later, at Olivia’s cousin’s country house party. He still loves her as she loves him, but pride stands in the way of a happy future.

A COUNTESS BY CHANCE by Kate McKinley is an exciting Erotic Historical Romance. #2 in the "By Invitation Only" trilogy, but can be read as a stand alone. A novella. For a quick romp through Regency England you must read this fast paced passion filled story of love, challenge, and a bit of revenge. Well written with engaging characters and an interesting storyline. I can't wait to read the next installment in this exciting erotic trilogy. Well done! A great Regency Historical Romance. I love Kate McKinley's books! They are short, sweet, and sensual.

In this book, Daphne continues her gambling habit. She tries to save her family estate by gambling, but she loses. She has one last chance to redeem herself. She can wager her virtue.

This story is hot! I read it one setting! I recommend it!

I loved this novella. This is better than the 1st book. Well the books are not connected so this novella can be read alone. There is humor in this book. Although I really wanted the author to explore more of the story. This author have potential to a great novel stroy. She just have to grasp on the plot. I can't wait for the next one!

This was a short sweet read. My only quibble is that I wish there were more of it. Olivia and Adam lost love reunited by competition and passion. Adam requesting her virtue was a cad move, however behind that facade was a broken man who had been jilted my the woman he loved.

This was good but entirely too short. Adam was the scorned lover who couldn't forget Olivia and Olivia the poor but well-bred young lady who still loved him. Tales of tables turned are always interesting.

Super short novella but since the characters already have a history it still worked well for me. Olivia and Adam have great chemistry and the plot is well developed if quick. I have enjoyed these shorts and would like to see a full length novel from this author.
