Layer upon layer of symbolism is woven into the fabric of the narrative in this book and that is almost to its detriment. It feels like the story is cut short at times, like more could have been said, or better that the story is forced in order to include some of the symbolism. Yet for all the symbols, there is not one mention of the Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.) (outside of the index where the Prophet is referenced in the definitions of "Shahadah" and "Imam").

The lack of the presence of Muhammad in a book purportedly about Sufism is strange to say the least. Especially as invocation, love, remembrance, supplication for and blessing of the Prophet through all facets of Sufism is a cardinal element of the practice/path - a cardinal element of Islam. The book is attempting to be ecumenical, particularly with the symbolism of Jewish characters fulfilling roles related to the Old Testament, and Muslims as related to Sufism and the master/disciple relationship. Yet to not include Muhammad gives an inaccurate picture of the Sufi path. Muhammad is Messenger (and Master) to both humans and jinn, so the omission was even more glaring in sections where it mentioned/referenced messengers, particularly in the direct company of jinn, not to mention in light of the very title of the book.

That aside, the book is a work of fiction and reads easily and quickly. It was the forced story line and the exclusion of Muhammad (s.a.w.) that were serious concerns, but not the overall message of the book which at base is concerned with the love of, and gratitude and repentance towards the living God.

A best friend of mine gave me an interesting book one day, titled "Sang Raja Jin". I left the book on my table, waiting to be read, when my brother took the book and read it first. While reading the book, he continually uttered the word "nice!" which then aroused my curiosity.

I finally dared myself to read the book. My first impression was that it was very poetic. I felt that the translator of the book was very adept in keeping the elegance of the sentences in it.

However, I believed that a message coming from the heart will be received by heart, and lingers in the heart even after it has taken a different form of language.

Irvin Karchmar, the author of the book, has exquisitely wrote the book in great detail, which enabled me, a person with shallow thought, to understand even the most abstract aspects of the book. I believed once more God has beneficently revealed a message to me.

I could actually experience the story, that sometimes it seemed like I was walking together with the Sheikh, Ishaq, Captain, and the other characters, even feeling that I was one of the Jinn in the story. I was able to feel the existence of myself from the beginning to the end of this heart-touching story.

Sometimes I had to stop and contemplate on the messages, and once a while I could not help shedding a tear or two when reminded that I am no greater being than the commonly evil-portrayed Jinn. Then I realized that I often walk with my chin held up high, drowned in the worldly bliss thinking that I have a joyful life but it turned out that all is just temporal.

Mr. Karchmar succeeded in reminding me that I have an Eternal Lover, the Merciful and the Beneficent. I was preoccupied in the world without knowing that everything that I love in the world will eventually be gone. He made me feel my long lost feeling.. My greatest longing of my life.

I personally am reluctant to state whether the story is fiction or non-fiction. One thing for sure is that it felt real, Mr. Irving's love and moreover the Divine love.

This book will soothe all seekers that are filled with yearning in every corner of their hearts. That we are not alone, we are One..

I rarely read fiction, and have never been this excited about a novel
before. If anyone is up to a beautiful and wonderful tale of Magick,
mystics and evocation my friend Irving has written such a masterpiece
"Master of the Jinn!" (Jinn is the root of the word Genie.) It is a
modern Sufi novel that will take you on a journey through the mystical
lands of the Arabian Nights.

Follow the pilgrims of the Soul on a spiritual quest of the path of
the heart, initiated by their master to find The True Temple of
Solomon, and unlock the greatest treasure ever known, (or unknown.)
This book has everything, mystery, visions, Magick, strange dreams, a lost city, bandits, Jinn, memories of the heart, other worldy storms, and so much more.

The insights are incredible! The universal message of Sufi speaks to
all people of all religions of all places in all times. Sufi way is to
Islam as Kabbalah is to Judaism, the esoteric insight of the deeper
truth belonging to no religion. The Pagan* way of the middle east, with
universal teachings and insights that reach across the worlds showing
the One and Only who is not defined by doctrine, dogma or man, but
revealed only in the heart of the seeker.

(* NB- I use "Pagan" in the Pythagorean sense, according to M. P. Hall, "Pythagoras was pagan because he was initiated into 14 of the worlds great mystery traditions, he refused to allow dogma or doctrine define what the divine may or may not be.")

I could not put this down!

Salaam and Shalom! Blessings and peace too all beings, especially those who are suffering and in need of mercy!

Popularly described as 'sufi' fiction the tale is set in a modern day setting but barely collides with the modern world. The story takes place in deserts and in sufi retreats and ancient cities.

I thought the plot could have been more detailed and the characters fleshed out. And this story would have been so much better if Karchmar had slowed down and taken care to focus on bringing it to life a little more. As it is, it all feels a little rushed and this takes away a sense of depth that could have made this more enthralling.

The ultimate message is about love and submitting oneself to God. Karchmar goes about this with mostly an Islamic bent, but includes many factors that may not be considered strictly 'islamic' by some. Like for example nowhere in the book is the prophet Muhammad (pbuh) mentioned. This is a cornerstone of the faith. But la ilaha illallah (there is no God but Allah) and several Koranic verses (along with bible verses) are present.

There were also several things like the existence of 'friends of god' i wondered were fictional or traditional in sufi beliefs. Some elements are obviously fictional, but if you are looking at this book from a religious point of view, its safe to consider it as only as an interesting fantasy novel and any information you get out of it; fact check and take with a pinch of salt.

All in all, good read. But could have been so much better! Hoping the author comes out with more works

I read this book in Tamil. The translation is good. Learnt so many interesting terms related to islam and Sufism. Its a tale of fantasy and adventure that was tailored to preach sufi values. It is more like a sufi version of 'The Alchemist' in a way.

Worth reading.

Saya mengira akan menemukan kisah-kisah para auliya pejalan tasawuf ketika membaca judul ‘Master of the Jinn : A Sufi Novel’.

This story has taken me by delighted surprise. What I thought would be a spiritual piece (based on the cover)is a historical mystery wrapped in legends and myths. I look forward to finishing this book to see where the author leads me.

Beginning of the story was strong. I was intrigued by the myths of my favorites Solomon, Sheba, Jinn, all told through the lenses of both Islamic and Jewish cultures. So much in common, so much to learn from each other.

The craft of the book--perhaps lost in translation?--threw me out of the story often, so often that I had to re-read passages to try to make sense and get back into the story. The main narrator was a scribe, but often and inexplicably, the reader would be in another character's head, shifting point of view so fast that it was bewildering.

Otherwise, I liked the story and the visit to the underworld of the Jinn was vivid and evocative of many mythologies.

Take a healthy dose of spiritual reflection, infuse some elements of fantasy, sprinkle in some extra-Biblical legends, and you might have something like Master of the Jinn. The book contains lengthy segments of spiritual instruction and in many respects reads like a devotional, and therefore it may not appeal to someone without an interest in mystical Islam, or at least in religious mysticism in general. (A glossary of religious terms would have been a helpful addition to the novel.) Yet Master of the Jinn is didactic without being preachy--a rare accomplishment--and its spiritual parables have something to offer Jew, Christian, and Muslim alike. The instruction is not dull or dogmatic because it is steeped in poetry, but it does tend at times to detract from the plot, which otherwise might have seemed more mysterious and suspenseful.

...the path of Love is now the hope of men and Jinn alike."

Update: 3/2008

After rereading this I am even more in love with it. The feel of the book changes after a few reads, and it feels more real and immediate. I think this is an important book for anyone trying to understand the practice of making spiritual journeys, and what it means to pursue meditation and contemplation in this age.

It is well-written, inspiring, with wonderful characters. Mystic sayings and pearls of wisdom abound the tale of self-reflection, awakening and ultimately, realization of Truth. It was also suprisingly approachable and easily digested in a few sittings. Sufism, is delivered through stories, thus reflecting into our inner self.

I expected more depth than I got from this novel since it advertises itself as a Sufi novel. The story is okay and if you enjoy fantasy with a bit of a religious twist, you'll like it. There are lots of philosophical quotes and ideas as the little company of darvishes proceeds on its journey toward the miraculous finding of Solomon's ring. Illustrations are nice.

Maybe because I had such great expectation -due to some great reviews- when I started to read it, I was kind of disappointed. The story was simple, lack the depth to be called a mystery. However, I kind of like the way it was written, very eloquent and poetic. The Indonesian translation is great too - well done Triwibowo and Salahuddien!!

In my opinion, this is a philosophy book. I think my knowledges is still not enough to completely understanding many Syaikh's words and the hidden meaning of the author's mind.

This novel is a kind of adventure's genre aswell, I wish the author make a longer bright plot, especially when they are in Genie's world. It could be a great adventure's novel actually.

"We both prostrated ourselves before his threshold"
"Salaam! She said softly, and held my shoulders as she kissed my cheeks."
The start of the book was was strong even fascinating but when the story get to this point i couldn't read it further. This goes against Islamic values prostration and boy girl kissing each other living together in khanqah cant regard it as a Sufi novel.

I cannot but notice the zionists being mentioned in the beginning of chapter(s) together with the greatest awliyas (saints) of the Islamic tradition. Even though I cherished the novel as a whole, Yehuda Amichai (page 64), as one who fought against the Palestinians in 1948 (basically massacring them), and one who himself said that all his poetry is political, cannot have and has not a place in such 'Sufi' novels.

I am aware that the book is written in 2008, and now in 2025 while reading many things have changed regarding our awareness; however, the Sufi tradition does not deserve this normalized consideration with the genociders.

A delightful mystery

On this, my fifth reading of this book, it still, baffles, warms and enlightens. The story and characters grow as I grow. And I look forward to the day when the light of love blends all hearts in Jerusalem. As salaam alaikum...Shalom alekim.

A wonderfully simple story finding its complexity in the subtext. The historical references add greatly to the authenticity of the actions and is extremley well researched.

This book also functions as a very literal glimpse into the inner workings of a sufi order. Whilst creating a narrative it is often necessary to take some personal liberties which the author sometimes does. (Actions of characters often dont allign with the character but take on the necessary role of the story)

An entertaining novel that is a quick enjoyable read. however, I would not venture that this will become some time honored classic. None the less it does offer a window into thee mystical world of Sufi Islam. interspersed through out the book are bits of wisdom and quotes from various sufi masters. The way of Allah is love and not only is Islam holy but so is Judaism and Christianity. What we have here is more than a tale of Sufi mystics and jinn haunting humans, we have here ann exercise of individuals from different backgrounds working together for the common good.

The story starts off sort of in the middle before going into the beginning. Ishaq is wandering the Sahara desert after being separated from his travel companions.. Hot and weary he wanders the desert in search of water, he becomes aware that even the animals pray to god.

Interestingly enough the story begins in somewhat modern Jerusalem, more precisely in the old city. A khaniqa or Sufi school is established in Jerusalem, and Ishaq goes searching for his teacher. In the market the Master Hayd is searching for a special coffee for some very special guests that will be attending the khaniqa that evening. On the way back from shopping Ishaq learns some spiritual lessons from a beggar in Jerusalem's streets.

That evening the Khaniqa holds a feast and three distinguished guests appear, three Israeli Jews. Dr. Shlomo Freeman is a professor at Hebrew University and is a former student of Master Hayd. Freeman's daughter Rebecca comes and so does a mossad officer who is involved with something archaeological.  THe Mossd agent was in the Sahara on some mission when he stumbled onto a cave with a corpse holding a cylinder .  The cylinder is written in ancient Hebrew or more appropriately called the Canaanite scripts. First he goes to Dr. Freeman and then Dr. Freeman goes to the Sufi master.

This of course leads to an adventure in the desert for Ishaq, two other students and the Israelis. Guided by the beggar from Jerusalem they take a ship to Algiers and embark with the aid of the Tuareg and Berbers to a place buried in the sands of the Sahara. The city of the Jinn. What follows is not much of an adventure but rather a tale of redemption for all of mankind and the Jinn if they want to take it.

The strong points of this story is that it shows Jews and Muslims working together and learning from each other. Combining the lore from both religions they are able to solve mysteries and problems. It shows venerated rabbis giing prophecy pertinent to Islamic issues. Both paths are holy. Yet I would debate a few facts mentioned in the book. Number one the Shamir was not a stone, according to Jewish lore , but rather it was a worm that ate stones in order to build the Jewish temple as steel and Iron could not be used. Tadmor is in Syria not North Africa. I am not sure King Solomon built the city for Queen Sheba and if he did would it not bee located in Arabia.

I have long known or suspected that people beside Muslims can join Sufi orders and be intiated with a symbolic conveserion. Why all the Israeli Jews involved end up converting instead of keeping their religion smacks of some propaganda , like promoting sufism.  Too bad a Rabbi could not have accompanied these guys and in addition to converting Jews to Sufism there could have been some Muslims converting to Judaism

I'll talk about it later, sepertinya nanti aku kepengen bercerita tentang kesan-kesanku baca buku ini. nanti ah bikin reviewnya... @@'

Al-Hikam (Kitab Kebijaksanaan), Ibnu Athaillah
