Landon and Broden are brothers. Sometimes they get along. Well, sometimes they don't. But when they find out who's behind the weird happenings in their house, they are called to battle.
Battle? Whoa. Not just one of their fun play-battles either, but a real battle in the forest with the most unusual of creatures and the wildest of animals. Can the brothers pull together when they need each other most? THE IFS by J.D. Pooker, cover art by Frank Walls, graphic design by David G. Barnett, published by Little Devil Books.
This was such a wonderful book to read, even as an adult. The camaraderie and competition between the two brothers was spot-on from my experience with children and was enjoyable to read! I do not have children myself, but have been a school teacher and done a lot of kid-sitting, and I could tell from reading this that it would be an insta-hit and something I would recommend to parents who have children in this age group (5-10 years old) as a bed-time reading book.
I cannot stress enough how wonderful it was to be read to when I was a child, or to be allowed to read to my parents as a child before bed, and an adventure story such as what happens to Landon & Broden would be much fun. Both older siblings and younger siblings would have someone to relate to, and only-childs would enjoy it as well for the adventure and banter.
This book is definitely added to my list to give to parents who ask me for book recommendations for their kids!
The book cover shows the two protagonists of the story, fifth grader Landon and third grader Broden. Also shown is a hawk with a little man riding it, which is a key scene in the book. This story begins with an introduction into the daily lives of the two brothers. The brotherly dialogue exchanges and fights between them has been portrayed well by the author. One can totally relate that to real life. Even though they fight constantly, there are many scenes which show their love for each other, which is so endearing!. They look out for each other. They have such a lovely relationship with their parents. Their mother is so understanding and their dad is really cool.
Once strange things start happening in their lives, they discover more about little people called the Ifs. I felt that word is derived from ‘elf’. But there is a little song in there with a lot of ifs in it which is why they are called so!. The Ifs ask the brothers to help them fight an enemy clan. From there, the readers are taken on a rollercoaster of fast paced events leading upto a battle!. First of all, I didn’t think there would be an epic war portrayed in a children’s book. However it is and trust me when I say, the author couldn’t have written those scenes any better!.
SPOILER ALERT : I usually never reveal spoilers but I need to mention this. There is a level of danger in the battle, that even adults would find intriguing yet there are no gory details, deaths (there, that’s the spoiler!) or major violence. I really thought atleast one If would die. But no one did. It’s been handled perfectly. Kids reading this would be absolutely amazed and ready to read more!.
During the war, Broden contemplates about war and how pointless it is. Such a beautiful thought that a third grader can have!. So, there is a moral in the story that little readers can remember. I am in love with this book!. Action packed, adventurous and thrilling!

I really enjoyed this story of two brothers and the battles and choices that they face. The world with creatures, battles and some love needed brother to brother kept me captivated. You will totally relate to this novel if you have any siblings of what trials and tribulations that siblings can go through. Through thick and thin my sister and I have always had each other's backs even though sometimes we quarrel. We know that it would never be something that would tear apart the ultimate bond that we have as siblings. The Ifs is a lively adventure filled with sibling rivalry, bizarre creatures, dangerous battles, and brotherly love, a winning combination for a captivating read.
Landon and Broden have a relationship with each other that is both love and hate. Like I described above, I think that all siblings that have a strong relationship and bond go through these little spats throughout their lives. If you did not get mad at each other some of the time, it is my true belief that you just don't care enough about what the other sibling is going through. At times in te novel it seems that the real enemy that each brother really has to worry about is one another but there is nothing that they will not do to make sure that the other one is safe when it really counts. When the Ifs come into the story to ask the brothers for help, they will have to come together and get ready for battle. They find out that they will be fighting something that is trying to bring harm to the Ifs. This was a very interesting take on a war that the two boys find themselves in. You are wondering the whole time whether they will succeed or will the trouble makers ultimately put their plan into action against the Ifs. The story line is very creative and the author has quite an imagination that will keep its readers engaged throughout the whole story. This was a great read and I highly recommend it.
I was given a copy of this book in exchange for my opinion.
Strange things are happening in the world belonging to Landon and Broden – two very ordinary brothers in a very ordinary world. It’s not the continual bickering between them, that erupts into fights and scuffles – especially for the control of the remote. It’s not even the play fighting and changes of side in the woods which sometimes mean they end up on the same side. It’s the noises, dreams and things that go bump in the night.
Eventually they tell their mother. And much to their surprise, she doesn’t think the boys are imagining things. It seems like she encountered them when she was a girl. If they want to contact you they have to wait till you make contact. If they make some noises, they have to hide. If you can catch them, they can talk to you… and take you on an amazing journey into their world if you are prepared to help them – because, as it turns out, they certainly need your help.
This is a delightfully written story about adventure and things that might live unseen in an ordinary world. It takes play into a serious concern for freedom and self-determination. It considers moral stances, teamwork, bravery and loyalty. But most of all it considers fun! I really enjoyed the setting and the twists and turns of the adventure with the Ifs – pacey and engaging with all too real treachery and deceit thrown in. Sometimes the reader is not entirely sure of who is right or wrong, just like the brothers. Despite the slightly moralistic punchline of the blurb, I think most boys and many girls will love this book, since it is full of little people and creatures of the forest who choose sides, and need the help of bigger people to restore order to their existence.
The Ifs is a great story. A tale of two brothers also at each others throats are about to embark on a journey that will lead them to band together and fight to help their new friends the Ifs to battle their foes. This is the perfect story for a child that loves to let their imagination run away with them. This is a story of two brothers separated by a few years apart. They go to school together, play together, and fight together and boy do they fight. Like an typical young siblings they love to push each others buttons until it starts an all out brawl. However, something else is happening in their home strange happenings that neither know what to do about it. When they finally talk about it to each other, they make the decision to tell their mom. Mom tales them the tale of the Ifs consisting of little people 6 inches tall. The boys were intrigued but didn't believe her. She gives them a tip on how to catch one. Leary of the whole tale they set off to try to trap the If. What they soon discover is that Ifs are indeed real and they need the brothers for their MAD fighting skills they've seen them do. The enemy also has ideas for the brothers which soon turns into a full on battle between Ifs, brothers, and animals. I really liked the story, any younger child will love to read this and let their imagination run free. The story does have a lot of fighting, but nothing offensive. The story closed on a good note and a nice lesson for the siblings and for any child that reads this will hopefully understand that too.
With K being 8 I have decided to introduce him to chapter books that do not have pictures I want him to know there is different books out there than just picture stories. So after I read the blurb of The Ifs I figured K would really enjoy the story. We got 30% into the book and K asked me if there was something else to read so I ended up finishing the book myself. It just was not holding K's interest like I thought. A majority of the book you read about the two brothers Landon and Broden and how they are always fighting it seems. We really don't hear much about the Ifs until much later. We do read about little things that happen but nothing that tells us about the Ifs or who they are until the boys end up glancing at one. Now the two brothers learn there is a way to capture an If, that is if they want to. And when they do they learn that there are villages of If's and this particular If needs Landon and Broden's help. But not all Ifs are friendly some are mean and Landon and Broden find themselves trying to help the Ifs that need their help but will they be able to? The way the brothers are written and how they act seemed real enough for me. Especially with the fighting they seemed to do. But I did feel them to be lacking as far as their adventures into finding the Ifs. I would have wanted more of a task into finding them or at least something with more adventure.
Overall a good book one that is good for middle age children to read.
Landon and Broden are your typical brothers, they fight with each other the same as I fought with mine. What if strange things started happening around your house like it does at theirs? Would you ignore it, tell your parents? What would your parents say? Landon and Broden finally decide to fill their mom in on what is going on and she actually has an answer for them. She tells them it may be The Ifs. The ifs are tiny people who remain hidden from us unless they need our help. When they need our help, they will try to do things that help us out before they show themselves. By doing this, they hope that we will be willing to help them out since they have already helped us. She tells them that they can capture one by setting a little trap. The boys aren't really sure if they believe their mom, but what would it hurt to try. Lo and behold, their trap works and they catch an If. He does need their help and they decide to give it. Along the way, they discover that their brother bond is strong and that while they may not always get along, they do love each other. They also learn that not all brother bonds remain strong. Sometimes things happen that can pit brother against brother. I believe that this book is appropriate for middle school children and maybe for certain children about the age of 9 and 10. My only reservation involves the wild dogs being used to fight and the kids having to fight them off.
The Ifs is a lively adventure filled with sibling rivalry, bizarre creatures, dangerous battles, and brotherly love, a winning combination for a captivating read.
If you have siblings, which I don't (however, I am the mother of four so have witnessed the "affection" brothers and sisters share when no one's looking) then you will be able to relate to the love, hate relationship Landon and Broden have. They are the best of friends and the worst of enemies, but when it really counts there's nothing one wouldn't do to protect the other. So when the Ifs enter the picture and ask for help Landon and Broden band together and prepare to battle. The brothers discover they will be battling villainous Ifs that are threatening to bring harm to the kind Ifs who sought their help. As most wars go, trickery and evil gain the upper hand and Landon and Broden find themselves in immanent danger. Will the brothers be able to escape the destructive plan before it's too late?
This crazily creative tale uses an imaginative story line to instill the beauty of brotherly love in its readers. The author does a wonderful job of setting the stage for the ensuing battle that ultimately strengthens the bond of Landon and Broden. Vivid detail and a well developed plot make The Ifs an all around great read.
Do have a middle grader reader who enjoys a great adventure? In particular, a boy who enjoys adventure? They will enjoy "The Ifs" by J.D. Pooker.
The story revolves around brother Landon and Broden. They have days where they can't seem to get a long, and others where they take off on their bikes and seek adventure. Strange things start happening to both boys with items being moved, homework mysteriously being finished, strange sounds, and weird sightings.
The mystery turns out to be the If's who've come to the boys for help. Only the If's can't actually ask for help, the boys have to offer. The If's have been watching the brothers for quite a while and admire their great fighting skills and they way they handle swords (sticks).
It's up to Landon and Broden, to come together, trust each other and rescue the If's from impending doom.
The If's aren't like the Borrowers, they don't live inside your home, they don't borrow. The If's live in villages hidden in the woods. They don't normally communicate or have anything to do with humans, unless they need their help.
Any middle grader will enjoy this adventure and won't want to put the book down. To purchase a Kindle edition on clicker here: Amazon
“The Ifs” by the marvelous J.D. Pooker is quite the enchanting tale. It follows the story of two young brothers Landon and Broden. As the summer break comes to close, school is back in session. Little did they know, there lived a land of fantasy right in their own world. What was this fantasy? Ifs. Yes, Ifs are known to little and are spread worldwide. They are small creatures that are about the size of a needle. Along the course of two months the tale unfolds where one particular If seeks the aid of the two brothers. Little did they know, the war of the Ifs would be approaching, how would they prepare? What weapons would they need to fight an army of Ifs? This classic tale reminds me of being a young boy full of imagination and awe. J.D. Pooker did a fine job in describing many scenes both with action and scenery. I almost felt like I was in primary school waiting to juggle homework and playtime! Will the brothers be successful in army against enemy Ifs? This I cannot say, you’ll have to read on to find out! One thing is certain; you’ll surely get your fix of adventure and suspense. The mysterious tale is waiting to be unfolded right at your fingertips. Until then, watch out for Ifs tonight. (And please, keep the secret of Ifs under wraps for their safety).
The Ifs is a tale about strange little men that live in the woods and about siblings and how great they really can be. Pooker did a very good job at keeping the plot imaginative and interesting for middle grade readers. I found the sentences to be a little short and choppy in the beginning but as the story got underway it either became less noticeable or improved. Landon and Broden are typical fighting brothers, having to share space and time and instigating one another throughout the days. The plot follows them as they find out about the Ifs, a race of small men that live in the woods, and need the boys' help.
At only 150 pages this was a short interesting read, the creatures and animals were marvelous elements that had me reading as fast as I could to find out what happened. The copy I received for review was a PDF and there were a few minor errors, like 'to' instead of 'do' but those could be easily overlooked for the descriptive, interesting characters and story.
Recently I have been reading a lot of middle grade books, this was a good one but not one of my favorites of the month, thus the 'liked it' rating. I would recommend it for young readers and siblings.
Broden and his older brother Landon don't always get along and are constantly starting fights with each other. But like almost all siblings, they will have each other's backs when the going gets tough. When weird things start happening, they discover the existence of 'Ifs'. Soon after, they are asked to help the 'Ifs' and the brothers join forces to help the good 'Ifs' and defeat the bad.
A great story with fantasy elements that all young children will love! I've seen this book categorized as and for 'middle-grade' readers but I think it's actually geared towards a much younger audience. Nonetheless, I do believe any young children looking for an adventurous and imaginative story will love 'The Ifs'.
I'd definitely suggest 'The Ifs' to any children with younger or older brothers and/or sisters. This fun story has a lot of life-lessons revolving around siblings including sibling rivalry, jealousy, and getting along. Landon and Broden seem to enjoy bickering and fighting but they still love and care for each other but not all siblings can say the same.
I received a free e-copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
The Ifs is a tale of brotherhood, loyalty, and knightly valor as two human brothers fight in a great battle to save the Ifs from their rival tribes. But which tribe is in the right? Borrowing from such beloved stories as The Borrowers, Pooker adds a unique twist in creating a group of 'little people' who are seemingly self sufficient and militarized, with their their societies living in the forrest where young Broden and Landon play. When the brothers are called upon to help the Ifs, they rise to action and learn that sometimes it's not about who is right, but about who is willing to forgive.
While the storyline is in need of further development, the characters interactions and dialogue are true to life and well thought out. A few chapters were difficult to follow and while the brothers are clearly the main characters of the book, I found they were written as a narrator observing their actions rather than through the eyes of the young heroes leaving the story somewhat impersonal and one dimensional.
Overall, The Ifs is good story the target audience is sure to enjoy.
AS BROTHERS OFTEN DO, LANDON AND BRODEN HAVE FUN TIMES TOGETHER BUT STRONG DISAGREEMENTS AS WELL. THE STRENGTH OF THEIR RELATIONSHIP IS TESTED WHEN AN UNUSUAL BATTLE ENSUES.
THE STORY BEGINS SLOW MOVING BUT SOON BECOMES ACTION PACKED.
THIS IS A STORY CENTERED AROUND YOUNG BOYS. THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN A WONDERFUL TOOL IN MOTIVATING EARLY ELEMENTARY BOYS TO READ IF ONLY A FEW ILLUSTRATIONS HAD BEEN ADDED. A FANTASY WORLD AND REALITY IS COMBINED IN THIS TALE LOADED WITH ADVENTURE. IT ALSO PORTRAYS HOW OFTEN DIFFICULT TIMES ARE VERY BONDING TO RELATIONSHIPS.
THE AUTHOR DID A WONDERFUL JOB CREATING THE CHARACTERS OF THE STORY. ALTHOUGH THE SCENIC DESCRIPTIONS WERE DONE WELL, AND CHARACTERS WELL DEFINED, ILLUSTRATIONS WOULD HAVE BEEN HELPFUL FOR THE AGE GROUP THE STORY IS CREATED FOR.
THE BOOK COVER AND TITLE ARE VERY EYE-CATCHING AND WILL ATTRACT YOUNG READERS.
MY REVIEW OF THIS BOOK OFFERS A WEAK FOUR STARS RATING
* I WAS SENT THIS BOOK IN EXCHANGE FOR AN HONEST REVIEW, OF WHICH I HAVE GIVEN.
I was given a copy free for my honest review which I've given. This review originally appeared on my blog Christy's Cozy Corners.
If you have a child with a big imagination, they will enjoy reading about The Ifs. The Ifs remind me a lot of The Littles. When I was young, I loved The Littles! Just imagine, tiny people living in or around your house. How cool would that be? Landon and Broden find out that it is very cool...and very dangerous! They find that not all Ifs are what they claim to be. They get caught up in an epic battle and learn that sometimes it's better to just get along.
This is such a cute story about brothers, rivalry, and learning to live with your brother (or sister!). The characters are well-written and endearing. The storyline moves quickly and has some very suspenseful moments! Young children will be captivated by The Ifs.
I recommend it for Middle Grade readers, though younger children will enjoy having it read to them as well.
This is a delightful story of imagination! Sibling rivalry crosses barriers between known and unknown worlds that coexist in the local park of Anytown, USA. Young readers will find adventure and maybe a new perspective in this story. Being a grandmother of adult and small children, I was pleased to see this issue taken up. Sibling rivalry is often mistaken as an acceptable behavior among children, much like peer pressure is considered part of growing up. However, they often carry lasting effects, and birth even greater evils of childhood such as bullying. Many of us as parents and grandparents, have seen and even incurred such damages. Growing up is tough business, and often our children wage these wars alone. I give a thumbs up to authors who take to heart these issues and open delightful ways for children to draw strength and insight into thier own battles. Life is a community, and literature is a link of hearts and minds that intwine throughout it.
The Ifs is a great story about brotherhood, courage and loyalty.
Even though the brothers Landon and Broden fight a lot (very normal among siblings and their fights in the story are quite realistic), they teamed up to fight the evil element in the story.
I think the book was well-written but I had to take out one star because of the violence that was involved in the book. Although the situation did call for it, I could not imagine children their age doing what they did (except for the Ifs being there, all other elements in the story are close to reality) - it is scary and also very dangerous.
Still, the book is an enjoyable story to read aloud and I would recommend this book for children with siblings (especially brothers).

Landon and Broden are depicted as typical brothers. They love each other, will stick up for each other, and like to fight and tease each other endlessly. They have a great adventure with the Ifs after which they realize more than ever just how strong brotherly bonds can be.
This is a fun story for middle school age readers, especially since these are normal boys put in an unusual situation that could happen to anyone If there are truly Ifs. It would have been helpful if the author had somehow noted that Chapters 1 and 2 were the same day told in each boy’s point of view.
Any young reader would enjoy The Ifs. I liked it and would have enjoyed it even more if there hadn’t been several misspellings and missing words.
This was such a great kids’ story of action and adventure. The little Ifs had me remembering The Littles, The Borrowers and The Secret World of Arrietty. There is just something magical to children about the idea of little people living right around us with us being unaware.
I loved reading about the relationship between Landon and Broden. True siblings that any kid (and parent) can relate to. The get along fabulously… the fight each other whole heartedly… and regardless of all else, when the going gets tough they stick up for one another.
I’m absolutely adding this to Zoe’s kindle app. She’ll absolutely love all of the action of the battles and the whole adventure. I feel like it would be a great book for most 4th & 5th graders.
Great book for all middle school ages, boys and girls!! Fantasy lovers will love this, as well as adventure and anyone who loves a good story. I found that it also had a good lesson of even thou siblings may fight we still love each other and trust each other. Two brothers who fight and plot revenge on each other, find all kinds of crazy things happening in there home, sounds from sinks, laces being fixed just crazy stuff. Will mom Believe them? Yes, and they end up getting called into battle in there own back yard, great story. and I think any middle school age and up boy or girl, will love this book.
The Ifs by JD Pooker is an interesting story. It is perfect for kids in the middle grade. I would recommend this to my 9 year old brother. It is a tale reminiscent of The Borrowers or The Littles or a movie like Epic. I loved both series as a child. As for The Ifs, Landon and Broden are perfectly described as brothers. The tension between them is very true to life. What happens next is a stunning journey into another type of people's life. Even more engrossing than Horton and the Whos. The Ifs is a powerful tale. A little more character development would have been awesome, but overall it was well written.
This book contains a lot of fantasy elements. Although the story needed some more dialogue, since it’s a lot of descriptions, it’s pretty enjoyable. But yes, it definitely needed more dialogue. It would have made the characters less shallow and more interesting. I liked the fact that the Ifs use so many different animals as transportation. Kind of reminded me of the movie “Epic” or Disney’s “Rescuers Down Under.” There is some action and the storyline itself, and with that I mean what’s actually happening, stirs the imagination.
“The Ifs” is a fabulous mystery for children 3-5th grade. It reminds me of “Where the wild Things Are” in a good and strange kind of way. It’s about 2 brothers who are having strange things happen, mostly at night. Sometimes they are not sure if it is real or a dream. The brothers get along like brother normally do. The older one picks on the younger one-that is until the Ifs appear. They embark on an adventure that involves right and wrong and brotherly love. This book could become a classic among young readers.
I loved this book. Landon shook his head and kicked a rock as he walked. For a brief second he'd wished he'd never met the Ifs. Then he and Broden could go on with their lives as normal. They could play in the woods and be blissfully unaware of the battle between the two groups. Most importantly, they'd be together. they'd be safe. Landon and Broden are bothers who discover an Ifs who needs help. Helping the Ifs sends the brothers on a wild adventure. Active characters. Great adventure. I'd recommend this book especially for boys between the ages of 7 - 12.
The book starts out with the brothers living their lives. They are in 3rd and 5th grade and fight like normal siblings. They also so alot of love and protection for each other. They love their parents and have a pretty awesome family. Strange things start to happen. Then they find out about the Ifs. From there they are drawn into this awesome battle. I love how this is written. It is this full on war but told in a way that keeps kids interested and parents happy. A great brotherly story. It keeps them laughing and intrigued!
This book has it all - fighting, plotting, sibling rivalry, weird experiences, adventure, mystery and battles. In short, everything that appeals to middle school readers. The plot rolls along at a good pace and hooks you in from the very start, with believable characters that are easily related to - we all know a Landon and a Broden, right..?
A must-have for any child's library with real-life lessons built in.
I thought this was an enchanting tale about two brothers and what its like to be a sibling. This story is filled with typical sibling fighting, teasing, bickering, fun, faith, loyalty and love. Thrown into those daily events is some mystery, magic and things that go bump in the night. There is lots of excitement, battles with scary animals and underlying lessons. I thought this was a fast, fun read and would recommend it to anyone who asked.
This story has an engaging and well-thought out plot. The characters are believable and act like you'd expect boys their age to act. I wish they didn't fight quite as much as they do, but I suppose that's realistic as well. It is exciting to see the brothers band together and save the day. This is an excellent book for boys who are reluctant readers; I think they will relate to it and really enjoy it!
Two brothers have a visit from a mysterious If. They then embark on a wild adventure to help save the If village. This book is packed full of mystery, adventure, action and some brotherly love. It’s a fun read and will be enjoyed by both girls and boys.
This is a wonderful story of brotherly love,it will keep you interested from the start, chapter to chapter it takes you on a ride of adventure and scary fun
