Night Prowler #3

Rapture's Edge

Rate this book
SECRETS…In the hidden world that exists beside our own, a mirror world of ancient magic and elegant deceptions, a world of people who are so much more than they first appear, a war is brewing. Most of these Gifted people—the Ikati, a savage, sensual race of lethal predators—are content to hide behind human smiles, disguising their splendor in order to survive. But others are discontent. And they will hide no longer.

BETRAYALS…Eliana lives for two things only: vengeance on the man who killed her father and seeing her father’s dream of living in the open with humans come to pass. But that dream is far too dangerous for The Hunt, a group of elite Ikati assassins with one objective: eliminate her before she can expose their secrets to the world.

SEDUCTION…Demetrius is haunted by the memory of the woman he once loved. He will risk everything to save her from the killers on her tail…and convince her, before the ancient walls between two worlds crumble, that only together can they defeat their real enemy, a brilliant, cunning traitor far more deadly than either of them can guess.

Mind? Blown. Neurons? Fried. Synapses? Shredded. Medulla? Oblongata’d.

This is not a paranormal romance. This needs its own subgenre.

Rapture’s Edge, I dub thee Queen of the Paranormal International Thriller.”

“Arise fair queen and run away from that creepy dude in the McDonalds crown.”

Okay, in all seriousness, reading this book was like watching an action movie. There were art heists, fight clubs, car chases, prison breaks, secret societies, mad scientists, torture chambers, assassins, gun fights, a kick ass heroine, a bad ass hero and villains so evil they made my frigging skin crawl.

Though this is the third in a series, it can absolutely stand on its own. I haven’t read the others (YET!) and I never once felt overwhelmed or lost in this beautiful, mysterious, tumultuous world that Geissinger has built.

Our main character is an Ilkati princess named Eliana. She’s a cat shifter and comes with a whole slew of powers to include super speed, super strength and a type of shadow melding that makes her damn near invisible. You know what the best thing about her is? She wasn’t given all these awesome powers just to be crippled by stupidity like so many other potentially bad ass heroines I’ve had the misfortune to read about. She’s the real frigging deal people.

At the beginning of the book she thinks my our hero Demetrius did something terrible. Something unforgivable. She and her ragtag crew of exiles have been hiding from him and his brothers for three years and in that time they've also been fed lies by the very men they’ve sworn to follow.

Enter Caesar, Eliana’s brother.

I’ll do it!

No really. This guy? Biggest. Douche. EVAAAAAAR. He’s one sick, twisted son of a bitch. I can’t even get into HOW sick he is because a) it’d be spoilersville and b) I might vomit if I have to think about him for longer than five seconds.

Then there’s Silas, the man pulling the strings behind the scenes, manipulating the Ilkati exiles into doing his bidding all while planning and plotting out his scenario for world domination. See above gif. Replace the name Caesar with Silas. Sentiment applies for him too. The douche.

But let’s focus on something more positive shall we? Like Demetrius. Here’s Eliana seeing him for the first time in three years:

“There at the end of the long corridor stood a hulking dark figure, impossibly huge, face in shadow, silhouetted by a wash of weak yellow light from the emergency lamps behind him. Booted feet spread wide, hands flexed open at his sides, enormous, muscled frame almost entirely blocking the open doorway to the connecting corridor from which he'd emerged.”

This little snippet serves two purposes. One, it demonstrates the badassery of my our hero. Two, it demonstrates the incredible writing. The whole book is like this. I had to stop myself on numerous occasions from spamming updates of quote after quote after quote.

So what do you get when you take two incredibly strong people with dominant personalities, years of pent up love-sick angst, mind blowing revelations and…alone time?

Aaaaaaand there went your ovaries.

Follow this up with some more evil bad guys, some insane action and… damn, can’t say much else without giving too much away. Best part about this book? The way everything plays out.

*grins evilly*

Verdict? Best Paranormal International Thriller ever. Actually, favorite “Paranormal Romance” too. Now if you'll excuse me I must go buy everything Geissinger's ever written.

***ARC provided by Montlake Romance via NetGalley in exchange for my honest review***

4 solid stars.

I was a bid iffy when I found out that Eliana will be the heroine in Rapture's Edge, because I wasn't able to connect with her in Edge of Oblivion. I didn't think she was interesting enough and I thought she was just ok character. The reason I wanted to read this book was because I know how brilliant J.T Geissinger. I enjoy her writing style tremendously.

Eliana:
- She turned out to be better character than I expected to. I will admit, I didn't have very high expectations for her :). I understood where she was coming from. She wanted avenge her fathers death. It doesn't matter that he was a pure evil, he was her father, plus, she didn't know the truth about his plans, so I wasn't mad at her. At least not as first :). In the first half of the story she was kicking a$$ like nobodies business, and I liked that about her.
description
But after a while it got exhausting. I got where her anger was coming from, but it started to feel a bit repetitive. Same old "He looks nice and treats me right, but I'm sure he wants to kill me. How do I know he won't murder me in my sleep." Come on!
I also didn't like Eliana constantly accusing D of this or that. Not only he saved her life numerous times, he saved life of her friend too, and that should have spoken volumes, but no, she was still going al "How do I know he doesn't have some hidden agenda." Give a guy a break! Only towards the end (some time after 83%) did she start seeing D as a friend and not an enemy. It should have happened sooner.

D:
- I absolutely LOVED D :-D. He was awesome. Badass warrior who believes in love :-).
description
I like when a alpha male hero is not afraid to admit how he feels about a woman. It's refreshing. And he also drives a Ducati :). When ever there is trouble, 5 minutes and his there, looking all sexy :-).
description
He had his possessive/overprotective moments, but deep down, he was a good boy. I felt really bad for him every time Eliana pushed him away. After a while I was starting to wonder what he saw in her. How much of that nonsense a man can take? But at the same time, I liked that he didn't give up.

I also liked Gregor. A lot. To me he was a man of mystery. I'm still a little confused about what his role was in this story, but I still liked him. I don't think he was Eliana's friend, even though he saved her behind couple of times, he also had a major crush on her. And the story ended without giving any explanation about where those two stood. Hopefully we will find out more about it in the next book. I really hope he gets his own book, preferably with Mel as a heroine :-).

All and all, it was a very enjoyable read and I can't wait to read the next book in the series.

Princess Eliana fled after finding Demitrius standing over her father's body with a smoking gun. Of course, he didn't do it, but she's been led to believe that he wants all of their remaining colony dead. They have fled to Paris, where Eliana has become a thief and a ring fighter to support the Ikati refuges and continue her father's work on the serum that could allow the Ikati to live in the human world without the need to hide. When Eliana is captured stealing a painting, Demetrius travels to Paris to rescue her. He is still in love with her - aw! She is now wanted by some evil humans and a group of assassins dispatched by the other Ikati colonies. Demetrius helps Eliana discover that Silas and her brother have been lying to her about the plans for the serum and her role in the future of the Ikati.

Book 3 was better than book 2. There was a lot of action in this one, but it was tempered by the slow pace of Eliana's indecisiveness concerning her feelings about Demetrius. It takes forever for the girl to see that he isn't trying to kill her. This installment of the series introduces some new threats to the Ikati, but we don't get to know too much about them before the book ends. It is certain that conflict is on the horizon now that humans know of the Ikati existence, but I doubt it will be resolved soon.

I wasn't the biggest fan of Eliana. She was so distrusting of Demetrius and I really think she should have given him the benefit of the doubt. I also didn't understand why she was so upset about her father. She knew he was a cruel man. Not to the extent that he was but I felt like her sense of betrayal was way off. The females are still not treated the greatest but I finally did see a change in this book. I'm glad the Queen did what she did in the end, otherwise I felt like it would have been a plot hole if she hadn't. You'll know what I'm talking about when you read it. The few in the council have got to go. There just seems to be a few cruel males that should be put out to pasture.

I picked this up off of netgalley and then realized it was book three of a series... so, I did what any devoted reviewer must and went back to read the first two installments before diving into this one. And, I am so glad that I did because this series just keeps getting better and I definitely would have been a little lost if I hadn't. Book one was a nice start but book two and three of this series is where this author really got my attention. And, there is so much I like about it that it's hard to know where to begin... so here goes nothing.
First of all, this is a very unique shifter world. The Ikati are panther shifters but individually each Ikati can also be born with additional gifts. It's the surprise gifts that some of them have that add an element of intrigue because you're never really sure what is going to happen. Leander and Jenna were the focus of book one, Morgan and Xander in book two and in book three we are introduced more intimately with Demetrius and Eliana. Eliana is no longer the pampered princess we met in book two. She is strong, fierce and powerfully gifted in ways she never knew and she is driven by a need for revenge and to continue her father's work. She's resorted to a life as a cat burglar to help raise money to feed her followers and fund the continuation of those plans. She is also for the first time able to get close to the human population and she likes it and longs for a time when humans and Ikati can co-exist. What Eliana doesn't know is that nothing is as it seems to be and as the truth begins to unfold she finds herself in a position of no longer being able to trust those around her... including Demetrius whom she loves, fears and hates all at the same time. She is surrounded by lies and betrayal.
The Ikati are becoming a restless race... in particular the female Ikati. They are tired of being hidden and having their lives controlled by the Alphas and the council. In this book we start to see the new Queen show her stuff... and ya' know... I get the feeling that change is a comin' and the panther boys ain't gonna' like it. BUT, if there was ever a world in need of a female revolution it's definitely this one! Where are my pom-poms??? I'll be cheering them on for sure.
The end of this book took me by surprise... and I can't say too much without revealing spoilers but it definitely left me wanting more. All I will say is that after the shocking events that occur nothing will be the same again in the human world or the Ikati. And the villain is not exactly who or what we thought it would be... I was quite surprised by the turn of events. I hope we don't have to wait too long for the next book because I need to know what happens next!

If you are a fan of shifter series and you like action, suspense and steamy romance... this one is a winner!

Slap me thrice and hand me back to me mamma – this was a cracker! Rapture’s Edge is the third book in the Night Prowler series and it’s definitely the best by far. This is exactly what I have been looking for in a book at the moment: impassioned, intelligent and sexy. Ms. Geissinger writes with such great confidence in her characters, it was fab-u-lous. This lady is not afraid to pull her punches – and neither are her characters.

Now, picture this – Paris, high stakes lady thievery, underground fighting rings and ancient dark catacombs. Shiver me timbers, someone get me a free tour! I myself screamed like a little bitch when it came to visiting the very same catacombs two years ago. Needless to say, I stayed near the entrance and waited for my hubby to come back, his iPhone loaded with images of him holding skulls aloft with Japanese tourists. Ick. So I have a lot of respect for Eliana our heroine – go girl.

This romantic setting is home to a displaced bunch of Ikati who are on the run from both their old clan back in Rome, as well as the powers that be who aren’t happy they’ve gone rogue. The Ikati are a patriarchal society of cat shifters, born and raised in the shadows of society, they are brought up on a diet of old Egyptian gods and magic. Generally, they don’t like humans and certainly don’t trust them.

Eliana
description

Three years ago Eliana quickly went from being a child to an adult. Her father, the mad king is now gone and she still blames her old flame Demetrius for his demise. Now keeping on the down low and trying to keep what’s left of her people and family safe, Eliana is the only one with the special talents in her pack to support them. Her mad skills are financing the construction of a stronghold which should help keep away the Ikati who are out for their blood, (cause we all remember from book one the Ikati’s most cardinal rule – secrecy is sacred. And living among humans is a big, nay, HUGE no, no).

In the book, we first see Eliana stealing from the Lourve – so 90s decadent – watch out Catherine Zeta Jones! Unfortunately, things don’t turn out the way she would have wanted to – naked and performing the spread eagle under an exquisite Degas painting. For shame, cat lady, for shame. Then, when this leads onto Eliana being caught on camera, she knows it’s only a matter of time before The Hunt and Demetrius catches up with her. Now she is officially public enemy number one. Ikati style. This starts a plot line that will take us to meet a very unscrupulous Scottish businessman, onto a human police detective who knows a little too much about Eliana’s roots, torture, exploding bombs, leather bustiers, then an all-out hunt across Paris by Ikati assassins, instigated by the Council of Alphas.

Demetrius
description

Demetrius is Eliana’s long lost love – and he hasn’t forgotten a thing from three years ago. Their story was like one from a morbid fairy tale. She was the beautiful, loving, untouched princess. He was the loyal royal guard, strong and silent and completely out of her league. But alas – after a violent showdown – mistakes were made and their fairy tale was not meant to be. Demetrius has spent all of this time searching for her, but he grows frustrated with his hunt (cough… ahem… obsession) and his clan are growing increasingly worried about his violent behaviour. Graced with the gift of foresight, he doesn’t give a damn about the rules anymore. But mostly, he wants to apologise for the mess of that dark day all those years ago when Eliana fled the colony in terror.

Demetrius’ relief when he finds Eliana is beautiful. I felt truly happy for him. Truly. It’s not often that I emphasise with a male character from this genre. The changing POV probably helped, which incidentally, I’m not usually a fan of, but in this case I think that it worked well.

The bedroom scene was so hot I wish I had a fan to hand… nay, two fans… ooh, and so was the shower scene… and the sexually charged sparring match in the catacombs too… you guys get the picture ;) There were lots of ups and downs between the couple. At one point I would think they’ve made it and then they’d regrettably take two steps back. Frustration begone! It was an emotional journey. The ending of this book though – ooh, bring on the drama…

For me, I felt that this quote really sums up the tone of this story in a nutshell.

Truth, like honor and courage and love, does not come in shades of gray. You either have it or you don’t – there is no in between.

Sometimes it takes a lifetime to uncover it, and sometimes it is clear and simple as a sunrise. Also like honor and courage and love, sometimes the truth can be lost, and you have to find your way back to it, crawling over fields of broken glass and dead bodies, your knees and hands bloody and raw, until you get to it and it’s even sweeter than before because of what you suffered on the way.

Eliana was on the verge of falling in love with Demetrius until the day she found him standing over her father's dead body holding a gun and fled her colony in Rome with a small group of followers before he could come after her too. They have spent the last 3 years hiding in the catacombs in Paris and Eliana has been forced to take extreme measures to make sure they have enough money not just to survive but also to plot their revenge. What she doesn't realise is that Demetrius is innocent, he wasn't the one who killed her father and the betrayal actually came from much closer to home. In fact nothing is what she thought it was, her father wasn't the kind and benevolent king she knew him as and her enemies actually followed her to Paris. Demetrius has been looking for Eliana ever since she disappears but when he finally tracks her down will he be able to convince her of his innocence and help her uncover what is really going on within her group? Can Eliana put the pain from the past to one side long enough to actually listen to him?

I have been a huge fan of this series from the first book and I'm happy to confirm that the books just get better and better with every instalment. I have it on good authority from a friend of mine that this book can be read even if you haven't read the previous books but I would still personally recommend reading the series in order. Although each book focuses on a different couple there is a complex ongoing plot that threads throughout all of the stories and I think you will get more out of it if you read the books in the order they were written. This is a fantastic series though and one I'd highly recommend to anyone who likes their paranormal romance fast paced, packed with action and full of fabulous characters. Rapture's Edge is set 3 years on from the end of Edge of Oblivion and picks up the story of members of the newly discovered Rome colony of Ikati, we met these characters in the previous book and I have been looking forward to getting to know Eliana and Demetrius ever since.

This is one of those books that is very hard to put down once you've started it, we see things from both Eliana and Demetrius's points of view with the occasional chapter from Jenna's perspective (Jenna was the heroine from Shadow's Edge and anyone who has read that book will understand why her POV is so important). I love romances that are told from dual POVs, it really allows you to get inside both main character's heads and these are the kind of characters you want to spend time with. Eliana has been betrayed at every turn but she doesn't allow that to make her bitter, she has always fought to do the best for her people and no matter how much she has hated things she has been forced into she puts their needs above her own. When she does start to uncover what is really going on she is brave enough to stand up for herself and those she cares about, she isn't the kind of woman who is going to sit around and wait to be rescued - she would much rather use her abilities to protect herself. As a full blooded Ikati from a line of kings she is incredibly powerful but she has also worked hard to train as a fighter and she certainly knows how to use her abilities to her advantage in a fight.

Demetrius is a fantastic hero, he is honourable and brave and he loves Eliana deeply. He wasn't the one who killed her father but he refuses to betray the person who did it because he is sworn to protect them and they did it in self defence. Even though telling Eliana the truth would make it easier for her to forgive him he stands his ground and begs her to trust him. After what she witnessed trust doesn't come easy to her but the more time she spends with Demetrius and the more information she uncovers about her companions the more the things he has told her start to make sense. She pushed aside her love for him when she thought he was a murderer but being around him makes it impossible to resist the attraction she feels, especially when she starts to believe he may not have been plotting behind her back after all.

I don't want to say too much about the story because I'd hate to give spoilers so I'm just going to say I think it was the most action packed instalment of the series so far, there are fights, robberies, explosives, chases, bad guys who will make your skin crawl, funny moments, sexy moments and some really heart melting confessions of love that will make you swoon for Demetrius. I can't even begin to tell you how much I enjoyed Rapture's Edge and I can't wait to get my hands on Edge of Darkness when it is published later this year. J.T. Geissinger is proving herself a force to be reckoned with in the paranormal romance genre and I'm sure we're going to be seeing lots more of her in the future.

3.5 stars - The third novel in Geissinger's Night Prowler series, Rapture's Edge is not quite urban fantasy (since the story couldn't stand alone without the romance) but not quite romance - or not the typical one. There is an anguishing shards of shrapnel to the heart kind of love in which the leads, warrior Demetrius and former princess Eliana, approach and separate as she first walks the fine line between love and hate, and later can't decide to give Demetrius her trust (and considering what she thought she saw, not without a valid reason.)

At the end of the previous book I wasn't really looking forward to Eliana's story, but in the three years that the she and the other loyalists of her colony have been in hiding, she has matured quite a bit from the naïve pampered princess who was entirely clueless about the inner workings of her hidden Ikati colony and her father's evil madness. So, she was a much better leading lady than I'd expected. But is Demetrius that really made the book for me. He is so completely devoted that it is heart wrenching to watch him vacillate between joy and cautious hope, when they come together, and utter despair each time Eliana questions her feelings and withdraws.

Since the real strength of the story for me is Demetrius' desperate pursuit of Eliana, the story didn't really feel like it got rolling (to my inner romance reader) until the pair began interacting. However, there are important things going on in the background even from the start and there is a huge movement in the overarching plot, and a new villain who is so bad that it was apparently hard to portray that without being a bit heavy handed – I didn't really need an up close and personal view of his depravity.

From the perspective of someone who has followed the series from the beginning, it was nice to see a 'bit part' for Ikati Queen Jenna, from the first book - who knows quite a bit about star crossed lovers and the price that children in their world are expected to pay for the 'sins' of their fathers. Seeing Jenna ends up being especially fun in that I liked that, in the male dominated world, Queen trumps Alpha – it does help that she can turn into a dragon and eat them if they get out of line.

The author's writing as always is very good from a prose standpoint, and even though not quite as lyrical as in the previous books, Geissinger's is still the type of writing that makes me want to clip out quotes to save – some rather pithy words about love and truth really struck me this time. Next up apparently is Leander's brother, Christian, who has a brief cameo here – his is the book I thought I really wanted after the first one – so, I will be keeping an eye out for the Fall 2013 release of Edge of Darkness.

They are living among us but superior in so many ways. We don't even know the danger exists from this ultimate predator, but war is coming and the humans are going to get caught in the middle. You might wonder who they are...well they are the Ikati. A savage, passionate and lethal beings with supernatural abilities. Some can shift, some can turn to mist and some are tired of hiding what they truly are...

Eliana is Ikati, living on the fridges of society she is in hiding from her own people. She one day dreams of living openly with humans and many are her friends, but a sinister plot may destroy all her dreams and hopes for her people and their future.

D, Demetrius, was once a guard to the royal family. Searching for Eliana has become an obsession for D. Knowing the evil enemy that hides in the ranks of the missing Ikati, D will stop at nothing to save Eliana from the path that is rushing toward them.

Swept away by this fabulous tale, I found Rapture's Edge completely captivating. J. T. Geissinger wove a tale of intrigue, romance, mystery, fantasy and action while building a dark and vivid world within our own world. Although this is the third book in this series, it stood on its own with no feeling of catching up or confusion. This was a contemporary fantasy with a good touch of hot and steamy romance...a perfect read for me.

I received this copy of Rapture's Edge from Montlake Romance in exchange for a honest review. This book is set for publication June 18, 2013.

Eliana is a famous cat burglar. She didn’t use to be a thief. She became one after her love Demetrius killed her father. Now Eliana is hoping with her current job to raise enough money to she her father’s dreams come true of living in the open amongst the humans.

Demetrius can not stop thinking about Eliana. After hearing about Eliana’s arrest, he jumps into action to save her. If only she would trust him.

Rapture’s Edge is the third book in the Night Prowler series. I am a fan of this series and author. I like the Ikati. I like the ability that they can turn into mist. In addition, all of the ikati women and men are strong and sexy.

So far the first and third book are my favorites. The banter between Eliana and Demetrius is steamy. It helped to build up the intensity with Eliana and Demetrius. There was a lot of running around but luckily the running around happened in the gorgeous area of France. A nice ending that leads up to the next book. I hope that the Queen is featured more prominently in a future book. She becomes more intriguing to me the more I get to learn about her.

I'd been really looking forward to this book and Eliana & Demetrius' story! It did not disappoint! This couple go through a lot in this book. I found myself alternately shouting at Eliana to trust Demetrius and sympathising with her cause she's been basically brainwashed into believing Demetrius wants to kill her and the rest of her group by someone she's known and trusted her whole life. She doesn't know what to believe anymore.
I loved a lot of the secondary characters, especially Mel, Eliana's best friend. I loved Mel's sense of humour and how she believed in both Eliana and Demetrius.
I really enjoyed the couple's journey and the new developments in the series. I laughed at times and at other times I will admit to getting a little teary eyed. I'm hoping that they'll still be a part of the next book and that perhaps Mel will have a big part to play as I really liked her character!
A great book and series! I highly recommend it!

Book 3 in this incredible series is a thrill ride not to miss. So many things have happened and so many ends are tied and untied. Breathless is a way to describe how I felt at times reading this installment. I am not going into too much story detail as I feel spoiler abound if I do.

Elaina again not knowing who to trust in this amazing world struggles. Demetrius…… sigh. That’s all I can say. Just sigh. I am left at the end of Rapture’s Edge so surprised and chomping at the bit for the next book to come out!

Such a good series to get lost in.

AUDIOBOOK REVIEW
Rating: 4/5
Heat Rating: 3/5
Narrator Performance: 4/5

RAPTURE'S EDGE is such a great installment of the Night Prowler series. It's my favorite one so far!

Here's a rundown of what I think about it...
#1 - You should read Edge of Oblivion first since D's and Eliana's story actually starts there.
#2 - D's a really good guy despite his surly, intimidating appearance. He may be gruff but he's a sweet dude too. He's loyal and dedicated.
#3 - Eliana has come a a long way from the clueless, pampered princess that she once was. Though she's still oblivious and blind to a lot of things in the book her growth is amazing. Her devotion to her people is very admirable.
#4 - I finally got a 100% satisfying ending. The first two books in the series left me with questions but this one didn't. In fact the thing that I felt was missing in Shadow's Edge's ending was addressed in this book.
#5 - Eliana's inability to see what's going on around her ticked me off. While some of it is understandable because of the way things are in the Ikati culture and because of her sheltered upbringing, there's only so much naivety I can excuse.
#6 - LOVE the cover. Blue is the perfect color choice and the butterfly is pertinent to the plot.
#7 - Wonderful sexual tension between D and Eliana even though she was being stubborn.
#8 - Why were The Hunt able to shift in public?
#9 - I'm not completely sure how I feel about the narrator, Justine Eyre. I like her voice and she does a great job portraying emotion but her pace is funky sometimes.

Favorite Quote
“I would kill for you. I would tear out my own heart with my bare hands if that’s what you asked, because your pleasure is my reward and a smile from you is worth more to me than gold. I’ve searched for you every second of every minute of every day since you disappeared, and all I want now is for you to be safe from the others who are searching for you, too—others who want to see you dead. I won’t let them hurt you, and though you don’t believe me, I won’t hurt you, either. Ever.” His voice grew even deeper, huskier, and he swallowed. “Because I’m in love with you, baby girl, and I have been for as long as I can remember. You’re the one ray of sunshine in the total darkness of my life. You’re the only thing that matters.”

Favorite Passage
Truth, like honor and courage and love, does not come in shades of gray. You either have it or you don’t—there is no in between.

In a word: an awesome race of supernatural creatures, toe-tingling romance, a plot full of danger and secrets, and characters that you will fall in love with.

Well, J.T. has done it again! In this third installment of her Night Prowler series, she immerses her readers in the carefully built and stunningly described world of the Ikati, a race of shape-shifters who are descended from Cleopatra and are able to shift into panthers and turn into Vapor. Each book focuses on a different set of characters, who ultimately hook up romantically, but some of the characters from the previous books also make appearances in order to tie the series together. These books are not mere romantic fluff. They are beautifully written and full of dangerous, intriguing and hotter than hell characters! And if you are a newbie to Geissinger’s world, never fear: each book can be read as a stand-alone, as the author does fill in the important parts of the world building that you might have missed.

Rapture’s Edge is Eliana and Demetrius’ story and mostly takes place in the mysterious Catacombs of Paris. Eliana, a full-blooded Ikati who is able to transform into a panther, turn to Vapor at will, and blend into the shadows so as to seem nearly invisible, has been living in Paris for the past three years after fleeing her home in Rome where she lived as little more than a prisoner. She and her brother Caesar live with Silas and several other Roman Ikati who have also left Rome. Eliana uses her Ikati skills to earn money fighting in the catacombs (like a fight club) and as a thief stealing precious jewels and art, which she gives to her human friend Gregor to sell for her. But one night, on a mission to steal a Degas from the Louvre, Eliana is caught and taken in for questioning. Unfortunately, the men who have arrested her suspect she is something more than human, and they will do anything to find out her secrets.

Demetrius (referred to in the story as “D”) is in Rome when he has a prophetic dream that Eliana is in danger, and without much thought he races to Paris to save her. But seeing D again only makes Eliana angry, since he betrayed her in Rome three years ago. Long buried feelings have a way of rising to the surface, however, and the sparks between the two begin to fly as they try to evade danger, stop an evil plot from brewing, and try to keep from killing each other whenever they are together.

I fell back into this series with a happy sigh and barely came up for air until I’d turned the last page. Geissinger’s settings are always so romantic and intriguing, and this book is no exception. I loved the Catacombs as a setting. It gave the characters lots of tunnels and nooks to hide in while they were being chased!

Geissinger writes characters that are bigger than life—and yes, a bit over-the-top—but every bulging muscle and smoldering glance leads to some very epic romantic moments. The sexual tension between D and Eliana sizzles, and it’s a long time before the reader gets any kind of, um, release, which is a good thing. You won’t find any insta-love in Rapture’s Edge. Eliana spends at least half the book hating D with a fiery passion, and she’s got a good reason to do so (at least she thinks she does!). But when she finally caves in to her reluctant longing for D, you can practically hear sweeping music in the background. And D isn’t the only male who wants Eliana. Just about every guy in the story, human or otherwise, seems to be in love with her, which makes for some interesting choices. I personally wanted her to go for Gregor, her enterprising human friend who saves her more than once, and I’m hoping he gets more story time in the next book. (Oh my God, I hope there’s going to be a Next Book!)

And let’s not forget the bad guys, who are extremely bad and keep Eliana, D and their friends on their toes, trying to stay alive. There are evil plots afoot, plots that could end the Ikati’s secret existence and wreak havoc on the lives of humans everywhere. Eliana’s conniving brother Caesar and his equally evil advisor Silas bring a true Shakespearian quality to this story. We’re also introduced to The Hunt, a group of assassins who are sent by the Ikati Queen in England to kill Eliana and D, and they give us some nail-biting “How the hell are they going to get out of this one?” moments.

Secrets, betrayal, danger, misunderstandings, pulse-pounding action, buried longings, emotional angst and toe-curling sexual tension—Rapture’s Edge has all this and more. Where some books only come close to giving readers the complete package, the Night Prowler books succeed every time.

Many thanks to the publisher for supplying a review copy.

Rapture's Edge: A Night Prowler Novel J.T. Geissinger.

ARC provided via Netgalley.

This is the third book in the Night Prowler series. I've not read the first two but usually find I can pick up the flow of a series OK. However this series is much more complex than I imagined, and I really need to read the first two to get the best enjoyment out of book three. Still, I managed to follow the plot(s) reasonably well and liked the story. Its a world full of secrets and supernatural creatures living and hiding from the humans. Novels often come up with such believable solutions to the human/supernatural divide that I can almost believe its possible :) and Rapture's Edge is typical in the way that it seems possible for what’s written to actually be true... I like books that have the edge of realism in with the fantasy.
Its people with characters that all have their own motivations and secrets and that's where not having read the earlier books let me down as I didn't always understand the innuendos and actions being made. Eliana, princess on the run with her brother and a group of others, was a great character, and I felt for her, her loyalty to her ar$ehole brother was laudable but it gave her the problem of what was going to happen to her if she stuck with him. Demetrius, what a hero, strong and Alpha male he loves Eliana but she thinks he killed her father and he can't tell her the truth. Big conundrum there especially when he's trying to help her when her life is in danger. They need to work together but he's got a huge task ahead getting her to trust him. The world of the Ikati, magical gifted shape-shifters, is divided between those who follow Eliana's father's dream of being open with humans and those who feel that secrecy is the only way to protect them, and then of course there are those who on the surface support one thing but have a whole agenda of their own...Much like British politics I guess :)
Eliana is told by her brother to steal a painting from the Louvre – that's how they make money to support themselves as she can turn to mist. This time however things go wrong and she's caught by the human police, seen on television and thus the Hunt, the Ikati enforcers, are out to kill her before any secrets about them come out. Demetrius sees the TV clip and knows what will happen and absconds from his group to try to rescue her.
Its a book packed full of action right from the start bringing in all the different sides of the Ikati, the /hunt and the human police. Its very complex and that made it harder for me to follow not knowing what had gone on before. I think if I get the earlier books its a series that will join my keeper files as it definitely had enough in the characters and story to bear multiple re readings. They're the books I like best, ones to really get engrossed in, to lose myself in another world for a few hours.
Its a long book too – another of my tick boxes :) and excellent value at £3.99 for 439 pages. As expected its well written and edited, the plots are riveting and all tie in nicely, there's no feelings of “but what happened to/when ….?” I like those sort of books where the story-lines have a proper ending, and the reader feels satisfied, rather than wondering why that plot was introduced when it appears to go nowhere. This book is long but its not a padded filler book, but pages full of real action that belong in the story.
Stars: If I'd read earlier books I'd possibly have gone full five but as it is its a four star read from me. If I do get to read the first tow I may come back and amend my rating :) but I'm reviewing it as I've read it now.

I am seriously having a love/hate relationship with netgalley these days.. Love because I get a chance to test some really awesome books and hate.. well because I get a chance to read these really awesome books that are parts of series and I have to wait to get them all read.. grrrr

Rapture's Edge is the third book in this absolutely amazing series.. well I don't know if the series is absolutely amazing since this was my first book.. BUT J.T. Geissinger writes a wicked world of vengeance, justice, survival, forgiveness, passion, compassion, friendship, betrayal, greed, insanity and oh yes love.. what's not to LOVE about this book?

Eliana has spent the past three years living with vengeance on her mind. She is determined to save her people and yet destroy those who killed her father. Even if it means destroying the only man she has ever loved. She will do anything, become anything and destroy anything to set her world to rights.. Eliana has walked the fine line between personal honor and honor among thieves The strongest of her tribe she has used her gifts to steal just so she can feed her people and put money towards the goal of living amongst humans.. side by side

Demetrius has loved Eliana for years, when she walked in to see him holding a gun over her father's body he knew he had lost her but he never realized just what that loss would mean. As a member of the ikati his gift was foresight and every night he was punished by seeing Eliana in trouble or hurt or in pain.. he knew she was suffering he just never knew where. Until one day he sees her being taken into custody by the police.. and his nightmares have just begun.

amazing, Amazing, AMAZING!! What a book!!! The power written into every scene, every page, every word moved me. Captivated me and yes sent me to my knees. Eliana, is a woman who was raised in a secluded environment and had absolutely no clue as to what was going on around her. She saw a doting father and a giftless brother.. who loved her even though he was jealous.. She never saw the darkness within them.. when her world was destroyed she saw what death brought and her escape along with a small group of followers lead her to the catacombs of Paris... Deep beneath the city they hide gathering their money and collecting weapons.. one goal.. to live safely amongst the humans..

Betrayal is a hard pill to swallow, especially when you have NO CLUE who is actually betraying you. Could it be your friends? Your family? Your lover? All of them? None of them? It's hard enough to figure things out.. First you are betrayed, then captured, then saved but wait there is a bounty (for lack of better word) on your head and you are being hunted by the very elite of your world. Just who do you trust?

Then the man you love, have always loved will always love comes back into your world. What do you think? Why is he here? To save you? To Kill you? powerful, powerful stuff..

I can not wait to get the rest of this series.. but of course I will soon be whining because I have read the entire series and the next book isn't here fast enough.. This is one of those books.. on a scale of 1 - 5 I give this book a 10!! Absolutely Amazingly Awesome!!!

Rapture’s Edge is the third storyline in J.T.Geissinger’s paranormal Night Prowler series focusing on the men and women of the Ikati- a race of panther like shape shifters. This is Eliana and Demetrius’s story.

At the end of book two –Edge of Oblivion-Eliana was on the run. Her father, unbeknownst to her, was a traitor to the Ikati people and her last image was of the man she once loved- Demetrius- holding a knife over the bloody body of her murdered father. Fast forward three years and Eliana is now a strong, independent woman and an international art thief. Trained for battle, Eliana will find herself on the receiving end of a take down that will see a death sentence for betrayal and crimes against the Ikati. Iliana is presumed guilty by association-she is her father’s daughter. Only Iliana is not aware of her father’s treason and her brother’s future plans.

Enter Demetrius-Demetrius has been searching for the woman that he loves for three years. She is of the mistaken belief that he murdered her father-a man who has betrayed the Ikati-murdering and persecuting innocent humans and hybrids for years. Demetrius only knows one thing-he needs to find Iliana; his mind, his heart and his soul demand that he finds his mate before he takes out everyone within his reach.

The storyline is slow to build as J.T. jumps between Iliana and Demetrius’s backstory and current situations-which are detailed and necessary to the plot. The reader is introduced to Iliana’s new family of underground runners hoping to establish a new colony of those who have been unhappy with the current Ikati controlling powers. Let us hope there are a few storylines among her friends. They want to live free among the humans and are amassing money and weapons-although why would those who want to live free need guns? Betrayal runs deep within the outcasts and Iliana will soon learn that she has been used by those she calls friends and family. This was never about living with the humans, but power and control.

The storyline gathers momentum once Iliana and Demetrius are reunited. There is plenty of push and pull-Iliana believing Demetrius is guilty of murder and Demetrius struggling to keep Iliana safe. The romance is sensual, hot and not unexpected. Iliana must learn to trust the man in whom she once loved and rebuilding of their relationship is undermining her long term goals. J.T. gathers many of the previous storyline characters including the Ikati Queen Jenna and her mate and, the warriors who support Demetrius at every chance.

RAPTURE’S EDGE is a well written, fascinating albeit slow to build storyline. It is a story of one family’s betrayal and heartache; of guilt and innocence; of love and hate. I have read the series from the start and Demetrius and Eliana’s story is a surprise but definitely not unexpected following the end of Edge of Oblivion. I have to wonder what occurred with the others during the three year interval between Edge of Oblivion and Rapture’s Edge. Perhaps there are more parallel storylines (or novellas) that will clear up some of the missing timeline.

Title: Rapture's Edge

Series: Night Prowler Book #3

Author: J.T. Geissinger

Genre: Romance

Blurb: SECRETS…In the hidden world that exists beside our own, a mirror world of ancient magic and elegant deceptions, a world of people who are so much more than they first appear, a war is brewing.

Thoughts: To be honest, the blurb from the book sounded interesting, but I was still a bit hesitant about starting the book since I knew coming into it that it was book three in a series. Having never read the author before - and neither of the first two books of the series(it is preceded by Shadow's Edge and Edge of Oblivion), so I had alot of misgivings. I finally just forced myself to sit down and at least attempt to read it, and hope it wasn't one of those that you feel dreadfully lost in if you haven't followed along from book one. And boy, am I glad I did!

There was none of those feelings whatsoever, and the world the author brings us into is utterly captivating. Once I got started, I was hard pressed to put it down. In fact, I devoured it in a matter of hours! There were captivating characters, interesting twists on the paranormal genre, mystery/suspense, drama, and romance. In this book, I have discovered a new favorite author - one that will be on the list I keep to alert me of any of their new works!

Geissinger has a real flare for making the characters larger than life. All the characters were described so well, and with such emotion that they fairly leaped off the pages! Demetrious was such a powerful character, and some of the things he said really tugged at my heartstrings. His emotions for Eliana really came through, and some of the things he said to her really had you catching your breath at the romanticism of it. Eliana was a strong female, yet also oddly vulnerable. She reminded me a little of Faythe from Rachel Vincent's Shifters series.

Nothing happens quite the way you expect, and all the twists and turns leave for an excellent novel. I will be going back and reading the previous ones in the series, as well as anxiously awaiting the next in the series, Edge of Darkness, out December 10, 2013!

Our Review, by LITERAL ADDICTION's Pack Alpha - Michelle L. Olson:

After adoring the first two books of this series, I had Rapture's Edge on Kindle Pre-Order and started it the day after release...

Starting 3 years after the ending of Edge of Oblivion, Book #2, Rapture's Edge focuses on 2 characters that I was absolutely in love with in the 2nd installment - Demetrius (D), a former enforcer for the King, and Eliana, the displaced princess of the European Ikati tribe.

At the end of Edge of Oblivion there were some major events that led to a heartbreaking misunderstanding and forced Demetrius and Eliana apart. In Rapture's Edge, Eliana is in hiding with her people - primarily her sadistic & presumed useless brother and his deceitful and conniving right hand man - and she's the primary bread winner for the colony by becoming an infamous cat burglar and fighting in underground fightclubs. Unfortunately, her cover gets blown and the human organization that her people are trying to hide from, as well as an Assassin sub-division of the Ikati, pick up her trail. Demetrius does as well...

After searching for Eliana for 3 years, Demetrius doesn't wait a second to go after her once he finds out where she is despite the protests of his brothers. He's never stopped loving her and is determined to protect her from whatever comes her way. He also knows he'll need to do some explaining given the abruptness of their parting and the events preceding it.

Rapture's Edge is an emotional roller-coaster. You want to slap Eliana (but only because you know things she doesn't), you ache for Demetrius and his plight of being caught between a rock and a hard place, you yearn for the two to get together - FINALLY! - and you loathe everyone that tries to keep them apart.

Outside of the incredible heart of the story, there was plenty of action, some amazing romance, and like Edge of Oblivion, an ending that was chock full of mystery & surprise and will make you want the next book immediately without feeling like you were left totally hanging.

I give Rapture's Edge 4 1/2 Skulls and am definitely looking forward to the next installment of the NIGHT PROWLER series!

This is the third book in the Night Prowler Series. Its about Eliana and Demetrius. We meet them in the previous book. In that book Eliana is sheltered and naive and has a crush on Demetrius. Demetrius also has the hots for her. Bad things happen, they part ways on presumption on Eliana's part that Demetrius killed her father.

~ Now 3 years later is where this book starts ~

Eliana has undergone some life changes .. Dyed hair, a thief, a fight club participant. Shes continuing her fathers work to unite humans and the Ikati. Or so she believes.

Demetrius has been searching for Eliana for 3 years. He loves her, wants to explain that he didn't kill her father.

When they finally see each other again they start the LONG ASS journey to finally be together.

Lies, trust issues, keeping secrets, deceit, omg I could go on. *falls to the floor exhausted* Well this book was full on them. I can understand the first half of the book about her attitude and trying to get answers, being lied too, don't know who to trust etc. But it just kept going on. He groveled and put his heart out there and she just kept pushing him away. I think it was about 85-90 percent was when they finally came together and found out the truth. I just could not connect with them as a couple.

There was a lot of action, villains, blood, murder, etc. which was very interesting. The author does tell a great story, its involved, very detailed, and has you wondering what is going to happen next!

There is a lot of woman hating in this series, women are second class citizens in this series. I am so waiting for the uprising. Kinda like they are living in another world where they just don't know how real people live. Torture devices they use on their own people, they get killed off if you happen to fall in love with a human and have a baby, assassins that kill you if you decide to leave...

With that said I am looking forward to the next book ~ Christian's

Again with a series I really love! I was highly anticipating this book so that I could read about Ana and D. Now that I have read it I can say that it did not disappoint. I couldn’t wait to find out what happened with the Princess and D. This book picks up three years after the last one. A lot has changed since then for the Princess as well as for others in the story.

This author has no problem keeping me interested in this storyline. The action is well planned with plenty of down time in the stories also and several hot scenes mixed in as well. I have no problem keeping up with the book and I actually read this all in one sitting because I wanted to know how it would turn out. I really enjoy the characters. Some of the old ones are back in the story especially the Queen.

There are many things that happen in this story most of them were not expected. Ana was definitely a surprise on how she had changed from the last book to this one. She has gotten a lot tougher and street wise and just learned how to survive on her own and take care of others as well. This time around the Ikati are not fighting their enemies the Expurgari so much as they are fighting against one of their own and a madness that is all consuming. I want to see how this part of the storyline pans out because I so was not expecting this turn of events.

The ending has really got me wanting to read the fourth book now but sadly I do not have it. Ana’s brother Caesar is really a piece of work and I can’t wait to see how that part of the story turns out for the Ikati.

(finishes book, stares at ceiling processing)
The Night Prowler series must be read in order. This is much more than a collection of romances. It's a high–stakes adventure where the fate of races, including us humans, lies in the balance.
I wouldn't call this particularly light reading. There are various factions, each having to deal with their individual histories and views on how the Ikati should live.

In fact, this is what fascinates me about this series, this ballsy author. Just because she's dedicated a book to a couple doesn't make them or their colony sacred necessarily. There is a lot of gray in who and what is right or wrong. War is coming, and I wonder how all of our beloved characters will fare in what's to come. This series is bigger than any of their individual stories.

This couple was my least favorite but understand that doesn't mean much. All 3 books are gripping reads. I'm just not a fan of a guy who talks/acts like D does. Public humiliation seemed dramatically uncalled for, and I found it unbelievable that he would remotely do such a thing given that he's desperate for her to give him a chance, much less loves her . For me, that would have killed it. No chance of a future together. Especially combined with his nickname for her. I'm open minded but love means having someone's back, crossing a line if their life is in danger, not turning you into a laughing stock bc it amuses you. Nope, that was a deal breaker.

Bottom line, Geissinger has done it again, and I'm left eagerly awaiting the next chapter in the life of the Ikati.

I wish I knew when I requested to review this book on NetGallery that it was actually the third book in the series. That would have helped with understanding the whole background of what was going on.

I was honestly lost during some parts and wanted to kick myself for not researching this book on Goodreads before undertaking it and trying to understand it. Those of you who are like me and plan on reading this book then I highly suggest you read the two books before picking up "Rapture's Edge."

Otherwise, aside from background clueless nativity, everything else was easy to understand. I thoroughly enjoyed myself in this hidden world of love, magic, mystery, and danger.

Eliana and Demetrius' chemistry has this uncanny feeling of surrealism. I know that description sounds weird and incomplete but that's the best that I could come up with besides using the word "soul mates".

I know that their relationship isn't a walk in the park as a war is raging and Eliana has some major trust issues towards Demetrius BUT I couldn't help but like their rifts and banters and root for them the entire time.

Another theme that highlighted "Rapture's Edge" for me was the secondary characters like Mel, Eliana's BFF and strong supporter of "Elitrus." <3

I highly recommend "Rapture's Edge" and will now go back and buy the other two previous installments while patiently awaiting for the arrival of book 4. Bye!!

REVIEW:
I loved Rapture's Edge! I really wish I had known it was the the third book in the series. I was a little lost at times without reading the first two books. I'm going to go back and read them to fully understand the story and I recommend other readers read the series in order. J.T. Geissinger created a fascinating and unique world with her writing. I really enjoyed her writing style and the characters. Eliana and Demetrius's interactions are hot and steamy. I was a bit frustrated with Eliana's distrust of everyone at times and wanted to reach in the book and shake her, but I enjoy characters that stir my emotions. I also liked that Demetrius never gave up on her. Rapture's Edge had plenty of action, intrigue, mystery, suspense and steamy romance. A great Paranormal/ Urban Fantasy Romance series!

This book had me from the very beginning. Really I could not put it down. It had action, strong characters and great storyline. Eliana was so strong, a little naïve but a character that I completely loved. She walked in on Demetrius aka D whom she thought she loved holding the gun standing over her father laying on the flood dead with several of the other guards standing around. Before anyone has a chance to talk to her she runs away with her brother Caesar and her fathers' most trusted servant Silas and a few of the other members of the Rome Ikati. They go into hiding in France. To help keep her tribe members and her father’s dreams alive she starts to steal artwork and with the help of a very good business man Gregor (I really liked him!) who knows the ins and outs on all side of business. The police finally catch-up with Eliana on top of that she is being hunted by The Hunt and D right there only a few steps ahead of them. I was all over this book I couldn't get enough. Very action packed and lets just say D is very swoon worthy of the utmost. This is the 3rd book in the series. Very good as a standalone book. I'll be looking for future books in this series.

Rapture's Edge is the third book on the Night Prowler Series, but is great as a standalone book.It tells the story of Eliana and Demetrius(D) and their kind the Ikati tribe. It's full of mysteries, lies, betrayals, action, emotions, twist and turns, misunderstandings, romance(definitely romance). I really enjoyed reading this book even though I haven't read the series. You don't have to read the series to understand the way the events happen and to know the characters, it simply pulls you to the story. The character are all captivating in a way or another; makes the story better because it doesn't focus the action only on the main characters. This book was a emotional, thrilling roller-coaster. Love the way the Egyptian are mix in the awesome storyline. I'm considering reading the first two book. I want to know more about the romance between Elina and D and how everything got to the point of insanity for members of the Ikati.
Rapture's Edge will leave you wanting to began the next book of the series to see what it happens after that mysterious and surprising ending. 4 1/2 Stars (Many thanks to the Book Divas blog for providing me with a free copy)

Another great sequel, this installment has a great storyline and holds you captive from beginning to end. There’s lots of action, intrigue, and of course romance. The characters are strong and full of depth as they struggle to make right what went so very wrong. The story starts in the last book, but can still be read as a standalone. I love how Eliana does whatever she has to in order to take care of her people and how utterly dedicated Demetrius is to her. Their journey together is a powerful and emotional one that takes you through the range of emotions with nail biting suspense as things only heat up once they get started. The overall storyline for the series also only gets better, so I can’t wait to see what book 4 holds in store!

Yet another very exciting chapter in the Night Prowler series that will have you on the edge of your seat, Rapture’s Edge will leave you clamoring for more!

Rapture's Edge is another suspenseful on the edge of your seat story of the Night Prowlers. J.T. Geissinger just keeps on expanding her hidden and secret world of the NP. With that said I had a hard time connecting or liking either of the lead characters Demetrius commonly called "D" and Eliana Cardenales. The couple was keep apart to much to feel any connections to them. I was happy to see the return of the Queen Jeanna from bk 1 Shadows Edge. She is a great character. Eliana has a brother Caesar who was not gifted with any of the gifts this race of shifters are know for. But he is as evil and demented as his father Dominus who has been assassinated. There is a surprised with Caesar and I can't wait to see were the author goes with his character. This should be good. Enjoyable story, just wished it had more romance!!

A wonderfully painted tale that takes the reader on more than one journey. Rapture's Edge is the third installment of the Night Prowler series and is the best yet. Geissinger has an ability to wrap a reader around a ferocious love story, while allowing you to feel ever present within the catacombs and all the delicately described locations along the way. Kudos to Geissinger for creating another obsession for this 30 year old mother of two!
