About the author

Novalis was the pseudonym of Georg Philipp Friedrich Freiherr von Hardenberg, an author and philosopher of early German Romanticism.

His poetry and writings were an influence on Hermann Hesse. Novalis was also a huge influence on George MacDonald, and so indirectly on C.S. Lewis, the Inklings, and the whole modern fantasy genre.

Man kann nicht sagen, wie dieser Text beschaffen sei, ohne etwas Überschwengliches zu sagen, und alles Bestreben nach Wahrheit in den Reden und Gesprächen von Novalis entfernt nur immer mehr von ihm.

This book contains compelling images and several evocative passages. I'm not sure that as a whole I found it particularly enjoyable or enlightening though. I read this mostly to see the influence Novalis had on George MacDonald, and clearly that influence is immense; MacDonald openly borrowed imagery and inspiration from Novalis's writings. In spirit I sympathize with the overall message of this book, but I think as a work to reread I prefer Hymns to the Night .
