Good introductory book, lots of pictures, but a little dated now compared to contemporary research which is something to keep in mind

A book like this is probably useful for a variety of different purposes, and may be more or less useful depending upon your purpose. Someone may want it, for example for military history, but I can't evaluate how good it is as a piece of military history. For me, the purpose was painting; many years ago, I needed to paint a scene containing a knight in armor, and this book was very useful for getting an understanding of the different pieces of such armor and how it should be rendered.

A good overview, not too scholarly, but appears to be authoritative.
Lots of excellent photos of arms and armor.
