"That move of yours... is not Bankai."

(In a way, he's not wrong. But did Kubo plan this far back that Ichigo hasn't truly unlocked Zangetsu's power?)

"You said I could only have one miracle. So what's this?"

"You're stubborn, Abarai. If you won't give me Rukia... then I'm afraid I can't help you. But I'll let you have your way. Rukia may remain in your arms. But the rest of you has to go." 🥶

With the volumes collected in this omnibus, we end the Soul Society Arc, and make baby steps into the Arrancar Arc! The mystery of Aizen's "murder" is revealed as some wild plot where Aizen and Gin faked Aizen's death so they can do sneaky shit in the background, using the arrival of the Ryoka into Soul Society as an additional step to cover their tracks. Apparently, Urahara created some magical new item that can dissolve the boundary between Shinigami and Hollow and hid it away in Rukia, also creating a special Gigai to erode her powers and make her a regular human to further hide the Hōgyoku. Rukia was directed by Aizen (masquerading as the council of 46 lawmakers in Soul Society) to give her powers up so she'll be arrested so Aizen can hijack the Sōkyoku so it can burn out the barrier covering the Hōgyoku so Aizen can retrieve the device and continue spirits to create more Arrancars *cough*we don't know that yet*cough*...!

Quite an exhausting plan, and maybe we could do without the lengthy infodump. But when I was thirteen or fourteen or whatever when I first saw this twist, it was the coolest shit I'd ever seen. I still respect it as a result.

Anyway, I can say with some Sincerity that I believe the Soul Society Arc is some degree of "peak shōnen battle manga." Overall, I'd probably say Namek or maybe the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai are the best arcs in the genre, but Soul Society is still fantastic. The idea is basically an evolution of the Gold Saints Arc from Saint Seiya, but I guess "updated" for a post-Toriyama world. Like Kurumada's manga, this is basically right after fight after fight, with dudes just magically becoming stronger because the plot and its increasing stakes require it. We have the added element of a mysterious mastermind, with Aizen as Saga stand-in. In a bit of a "twist," the "final boss" of this arc is Byakuya rather than Aizen (the Aizen reveal comes after the Byakuya fight), which I guess would be closer to a Seiya/Ikki fight, if anything, but also not really because Ikki would have been something of an ally earlier on anyway. Byakuya, and Renji before him, and really Zaraki as well, are all more analogous to the sort of Tenshinhan/Piccolo/Vegeta character - an enemy redeemed through combat with our hero. Actually... that works better than expected; Zaraki allies with Ichigo out of the joy of combat with a strong enemy (Tenshinhan), Renji joins Ichigo's side to combat the threat posed by Byakuya (Piccolo teaming up with Son Goku against Raditz), and Byakuya is the strongest enemy to cap off the arc and who will become a teammate of sorts when fighting the next major enemy (Vegeta, who joins the fight against Freeza's goons).

By the end of Volume 21, we don't have a clear idea of where the manga will go. A lot of stuff happens in short order: a new kid Shinji introduces himself to Ichigo as a "Visored," a Shinigami with Hollow powers; Uryu's dad shows up to mention retraining Uryu's Quincy powers; Grand Fisher returns as an Arrancar, a Hollow who has removed its mask to gain Shinigami powers (including Zanpakuto); and Ichigo's father is revealed to be a captain-class Shinigami, making Ichigo a Shinigami by birth. The way things end here, it looks like the Visoreds will be the next group of villains, but... that's not quite it.

Shout-out to Orihime and Rukia in cheongsams on the cover of Chapter 170. Additional shout-out to Rukia's armpits...!

As I said in my review for the first two 3-in-1 volumes, this isn’t my first time being introduced to this series. I used to watch the anime on adult swim back in either 2006 or 2007 when I was either 13 or 14 years old.

I've always wondered why squad 11 never joined the final battle against Aizen on the hill. They love to fight strong opponents so I thought that it would make sense for them to be there and none of them were too badly injured either to not fight. It just was never explained. With the other Captains, it makes sense why they didn't show up: squad 4's captain healing squad 10's captain and 5's lieutenant/assistant captain, and squad 12's captain not being interested in what's going on.

I hate that Gin was chosen for the cover of this volume. He face reminds me of a snake and snakes freak me out, so I tried not to stare at the cover much. Although the cover for vol. 12 is worse, it's Mayuri and he looks like a creepy clown (most clowns don't scare me but they do make me uncomfortable, Mayuri on the other hand is really creepy looks wise and personality wise).
I'm glad that Grimmjow is on the cover of vol. 8 instead of Ulqiora because Ulqiora is very boring in my opinion whereas I really like Grimmjow. Although I would have preferred Ikkaku out of the 3 from vol. 22-24. I just love him more than Grimmjow.

Overall, I really enjoyed this volume and the whole arc just like I enjoyed the episodes years ago. I'm really glad that I had decided to read the manga because there are so many little things that are never shown or mentioned in the anime, like how Ichigo found out that the badge can separate his soul from his body. Or finding out why Orihime doesn't live with her parents (it was revealed in one of the early volumes, I think in the first omnibus, so probably vol. 2 or 3 of the single editions). I'm going to read vol. 22 instead of the 3-in-1 vol. 8 (unfortunately vol. 8-11 have still not been available to ship, yet vol. 12 and have 13 have shipped) on the shonen jump app even though I prefer to read the physical books but it's the only choice I've got right now. After vol. 22 I'm going to read a few other books and then go back to this series.

The end of the first major arc that leads to the continuation of the second major arc. Finally - the reveal of the real villain! Thought dead, Sosuke Aizen was alive all the time only to reveal his intention of killing Rukia Kuchiki dead. When the Soul Reapers on all class levels tries to stop him and his cohorts, they were protected by Hueco Mundo (Hollow Universe). Although Rukia is saved, lives are changed and the past has been forgiven. Once back to the world of the living, Ichigo is now a Deputy Soul Reaper on his duty to reap the Hollows, only to encounter a Visored (part Hollow, part Soul Reaper) and the return of the Grand Fisher! Plus - Isshin Kurosaki reveals a secret!

I am starting to believe that Tite Kubo seems to rehash his way of story-telling, that its starting to feel a little expected. Although this volume maybe a big turn-over to another direction that became the main plot, I can't help but wonder where this is heading. Overall, an Empire Strikes Back ending that's worth looking forward to.

when aizen told renji to give him rukia, and he’s being attacked and rukia is telling him to let her go and he says “I’m not letting go of you” while thinking back to the time he did let go of her 40 years ago…. and you can practically hear the “again” 💓
aizen is just in a silly goofy murder mood he’s just in his mansplain manipulate murder era
kira deserves the whole world btw.
kon is so cringe.
gin :(

What a good volume. An end to the story arc.

The volume was filled with fun and exciting battle and action. There was a lot of plot development with the villains and our heroes. The mystery behind Aizen was really good and fascinated me. This is just going to get crazier. Hopefully, we get to spend more time with the main group now.

Solid volumes.

Mild spoilers:

First off - nice reading about Yoruichi and Soi Fon background.

Awesome battle between Byakuya and Ichigo and the culmination of the Soul Society arc.
It's really solid volumes like this that make one continue reading Bleach.

And then we get the Visored and the Espadas
The return of Isshin as a soul reaper

I liked it all!

I rate this a 3.5 star but closer to a 4 so I rated up rather then down. I have very mixed feeling about how this arc of the story wrapped up. I wonder if they are going to elaborate a little more in future volumes about where exactly Aizen went or maybe they did and I missed it. Either way I’m still excited to see where this series will go in the future.

This omnibus was very infodump heavy. I had to take a few breaks around volume 20. But it does get back to smooth sailing after that. I love this series and I'm remembering a lot of facts that I had previously forgotten were in the anime. I cannot wait for the next volume!

Soul society running around. A few soul reapers aren't happy that Rukia is suppose to be executed. Ichigo has to fight Bya and the whole master plan is revealed. The arc is reaching its climax and ooening for the new one. What a thrill of a ride.

basically: Aizen is the smartest villain in the world, no one can top him. The little shit came up with a foolproof plan that no one knew about all except him, and then he executed it while everyone was fighting all over the place. Then once they figured it out, they tried to stop him. But Aizen was so damned smart, he figured it all out, and then he deuced out.

Oh and the Ichigo vs. Byakuya fight happened in this book as well, and Ichigo won thanks to the Hollow inside him helping a bit, but Ichigo tore off the mask so he can fight him without the Hollow. All in all, I really enjoyed this volume and I'm almost done with the other one.

More about Soi Fon and Yoruichi's backstory. Ichigo and Byakuya fight and Ichigo reveals his bankai. This is also the first time we see Ichigo's hollow mask. Ichigo defeats Byakuya and Orihime heals him.
Toshiro and Matsumoto discover that the Council of 46 has all been slaughtered. Izuru and Matsumoto duke it out while Toshiro runs, trying to protect Momo. Momo arrives at the council room and Aizen reveals that he is alive before he stabs her and leaves with Gin.
Toshiro discovers them but is defeated by Aizen. Unohana and Isane discover Aizen and he reveals his true bankai, the ability to trap people under hallucinations and Tosen works for him.
Aizen transports Renji and Rukia back to execution place and demands Renji to give him Rukia. Isane sends out a message that tells everyone about Aizen and asks for the ryoka to help while Unohana heals Toshiro and Momo.
Renji and Aizen fight over Rukia and Ichigo appears to help Renji. Aizen explains hollowfication (making soul reapers like hollows) and the hogyoku (a sphere that makes hollows like soul reapers).
Urahara hid this within Rukia's gigai.
Komamura appears to stop him, but is shocked to hear about Tosen siding with Aizen.
Aizen removes the Hogyoku from Rukia. Byakuya saves her before Gin can kill her. Soi Fon and Yoriruichi have teamed up to stop Aizen and Kukaku comes to help with the four giants guarding the gates.
Matsumoto disarms Gin and it was pretty awesome how quickly he gave up. Aizen uses a Menos Grande to teleport him, Gin, and Tosen away.
Everyone is being healed and Byakuya tells Rukia that his wife was her sister.
After the battle, the ryoka are meshing with the soul reapers. The part where Matsumoto gets drunk over Gin's departure was funny.
Rukia apologizes to Ganju and Kukaku for Kaien's death. Rukia tells Ichigo she wants to stay in the soul society and he sort of accepts this easily. They all leave and Urahara picks them up and Ichigo forgives him.
Everyone goes back to school and Ichigo is given an official deputy soul reaper seal. And the Soul Society arch is over.

A guy named Shinju comes to Ichigo's school as a student and is determined to befriend him. He reveals that he is a Visored (also called Vizards later for some reason), people who are part hollow and wants Ichigo to join them.
Uryu has no more Quincy powers and his father offers to restore his powers in exchange for never working with soul reapers again. Kon is in Ichigo's body and is being chased by an oddly humanoid hollow until Ichigo's father, as a soul reaper, saves him. Meanwhile, Ichigo refuses to join the Vizards.

Sounding like a broken record now but YES, YES, YES.

Such great story without ever feeling like it repeats itself. World building is really so incredible and the story just keeps escalating. Just as soon as you think the different skills and powers has hit the ceiling, it continues to evolve.

Love the plot, love these characters, love everything about it!

HUGE twist at the end of this volume (I've overtaken where I got to with the anime, so it took me by surprise!). I loved this volume! So glad to be done with that enormous story arc though!

May contain spoilers of previous volumes.

Vol. 19: The Black Moon Rising - The volume begins, and a good large portion of it follows, with switching between a few different battles finally ending on the one with Ichigo and Rukia's brother. This actually got rather tiresome for me. Then towards the end we entered into the plot again and a bombshell was dropped that made the whole volume worthwhile in the end! Cliffhanger ending. (3.5/5)

Vol. 20: End of Hypnosis - And that concludes this whole current story arc. Wow! A fast-paced page-turner. I did not see that coming. Betrayal, traitors, murder, a friend's death. Great stuff. Where will the plot go next? (5/5)

Vol. 21: Be My Family Or Not - Man, I love this manga! Everybody is back home again and I'm just loving the interaction between the major characters again. I love all 4 of them! Ichigo is back to battling hollows and that's a lot of fun; I sure missed that aspect while all the intrigue of the last arc was going on. But BAM!, this volume doesn't wait long to bring in some shockers and from the title we have have family issues, father issues to be exact. Two characters' fathers have big reveals for us. Woohoo! Love this. (5/5)

Volume 7 of Bleach 3-in-1 edition (19, 20, 21). Ichigo successfully stopped Rukia’s execution, but as the pieces of Aizen’s death are revealed Rukia may not be safe for long. This book contains the following fights:

-Ikkaku Madarame versus Tetsuzaemon Iba
Ichigo Kurosaki versus Byakuya Kuchiki
- Jûshiro Ukutake and Shunsui Kyôraku versus Genryû Sai
- Yoruichi Shihôin versus Soi Fon
-Climax confrontation (basically everyone was involved)

Spoilers:
- Isshin Kurosaki versus Grand Fisher
