I wonder if something was lost in the translation of this book? I certainly hope so, because I found it did not live up to it's interesting description.
After the sudden loss of her husband, Joe, shot during an armed bank robbery, Nora Cooper makes a startling discovery: shortly before his death, Joe secretly sold their newly purchased dream home on Martha’s Vineyard, where the couple had planned to retire.
The plot had great possibilities which were never adequately explored, and there were several minor inconsistencies that irked me.
If you like a romantic mystery, with the emphasis on the 'romantic' then you will probably enjoy this book. I prefer mine loaded more on the side of mystery.
Words in the Dark was an okay read (I was never tempted not to finish), but I won't be looking out for more from this author.

"Prima di dire addio" è la storia di una vedova che tenta di spiegarsi la perdita del marito e un'incomprensibile bugia di quest'ultimo, trovando le risposte - a rischio della propria vita - quando decide di indagare sui messaggi che le arrivano dall'aldilà. Il romanzo mi è piaciuto per due motivi. Il più ovvio è la sceneggiatura da thriller classico, robusta e priva di punti deboli, condita da sorprese, cattivi-che-sembrano-buoni e viceversa, con l'irruzione del paranormale e un finale appropriato. Il meno scontato è ciò che sta dietro la trama: la caratterizzazione dei personaggi e soprattutto una storia d'Amore con la A maiuscola, insolita perché ne sono protagonisti una donna e un uomo di mezza età, prossimo alla pensione. Non il tempo delle mele, una volta tanto, ma quello dei nipotini. E la malinconia della perdita raccontata con sensibilità, partecipazione e le parole dell'autunno della vita. È questa, secondo me, la marcia in più del racconto e la giustificazione del ritmo diseguale, che alterna le pause con le accelerazioni, i "perché" cercati con il piombo nel cuore a quelli scoperti con inquietudine, ansia e infine terrore. Un'opera matura dal mondo "indie" sullo sfondo non banale di Matha's Vineyard, isola turistica notissima negli USA ma meno in Italia, descritta in termini che mettono voglia di visitarla.

This is the first book I read in English, and I’m happy not only to have finished it, but to have done it in a few days. So, I’ll try to explain my experience in my Italian-English, be quiet.
I think the credit for this belongs to the author skill. The story is told with a clear language, but the plot is at the same time excellent.
In the suggestive frame of Martha’s Vineyard, Norah Cooper looses his beloved husband Joe, a respected policeman in Boston, killed during a robbery in a bank. But another bad news is coming when she knew that she had to leave their cottage in two weeks because Joe secretly sold it.
Was he a liar? How could he? Last, but not least, Joe begins to send messages via scrabble, and Norah understands that there something very important other.
When you start to read, you can’t stop and this is the first good thing. You discover characters and situations one by one, and you have to upset your attention to not loose any trail. In fact, nothing is left back and the final is worthy.
This book is as good as any other mistery thriller, with the only difference that the author isn’t -yet- prominent.
People who knows those places can easily recognize landscapes and ferries. We, bleeding hearts, can think about Harrison Ford and Michele Pfeiffer in “What lies beneath”. But this story can, more than this, let people who have never been there, recognize their imaginary, romantic dream about Nantucket, the cold wind, the leaf-full streets and the wooden houses, like real.

Not reading this book is a "crime!"
This book impressed me so much. Not only is a well-written crime book— it reminds me of Agatha Christie's classic, sophisticated and timeless style—, not only does it contain suspense and action, but it has a heart. The relationships that link the characters are deep and believable, and the problems the characters have to face are common in the everyday life of each one of us. Besides, wisely, the author adds a dash of romance to catch the attention of the female readers too.
I fell for the protagonist, Nora, immediately. She suffers a terrible loss at the beginning of the story: her husband, a cop, has been killed during a bank robbery. Nora's life falls to pieces when she discovers that her husband has sold their house without telling her. But this is not the only mystery that crosses her life. Nora, a practical and solid person, finds herself involved in supernatural events. Has she become mad?
One plot twist after the other, the reader follows Nora's stubborn search for the truth. Despite her pains and worries, she always does the right thing: she wants justice for her husband and she doesn't give up protecting her beloved ones; her daughter and her grandchildren. She is a fighter, she is smart, but she is also a woman with vulnerability: she missses her husband and she is afraid of losing her house. The reader can't help but follow her story with bated breath.
I look forward to reading more. I'm sure the second book of Nora Cooper Mysteries won't disappoint me at all.

My Review: I loved this book. I always like a good who done it type book and this is one of the best I have read in a long time. Throw in a little paranormal and you have a winner. When Nora Cooper finds herself suddenly a widow after 30 years of marriage strange events begin unfolding that makes her doubt everything about her past life. Then messages from the other side contuse and frighten her more. With all of the confusion and doubt comes an ominous danger. This book definitely had me reading much later than I should have. I would highly recommend this book and it is one I would like to have on my to keep shelf. I will gladly look for more from this author. I believe the editing was fine, if it wasn't the story kept me so wrapped up I didn't notice. It gets a big old 5 star from me.

Words in the Dark is a tremendous mystery and suspense novel. I have previously read other stories written in Italian by Giulia Beyman and I am positively amazed by her English mystery novel.
The main character, Nora, is a well developed and interesting woman who is coping with the loss of her husband - a cop killed during a robbery.
It's impossible not to feel with Nora the huge pain she's been through, given also the many surprises her dead husband was holding for her.
The paranormal aspect of the story spices up the plot enough to keep me glued to my Kindle and force me to go to bed very late at night!
Definitely an author and a series to follow!

La scrittrice è stata, per me, una bella scoperta. Mi piace molto il suo modo di scrivere, anche se il fatto di risolvere i casi con l'aiuto dell'al di là non mi convince molto, ma riesce comunque a tenere viva l'attenzione e la curiosità del lettore fino alla soluzione del caso.

Grazie alle varie Challenge a cui sto partecipando sono riuscita a recuperare la lettura di questo ebook che avevo da tempo immemore nel mio Kindle.
L’autrice è italiana, ma il suo stile mi ha dato l'impressione di essere quasi americano. In effetti mi ha ricordato moltissimo Nora Roberts o Mary Higgins Clark.
La protagonista è Nora Cooper, una donna di 53 anni che ha perso il marito e che si ritrova improvvisamente alle prese con la vendita della loro casa di famiglia. Sembra che il marito, due giorni prima di morire, abbia firmato l'atto di vendita. La donna non crede assolutamente che il coniuge possa aver compiuto una simile azione. Intanto inizia a ricevere degli strani messaggi che confermano le sue idee.
Nora è una protagonista alquanto particolare, diversa da quelle di cui sono solita leggere soprattutto per l’età. Di lei mi è piaciuto parecchio il carattere determinato che si accompagna alla voglia di scoprire cosa si nasconde dietro questa vendita.
Ho apprezzato anche il particolare paranormale che viene inserito nella trama e che aiuta Nora nelle sue ricerche.
I personaggi secondari sono caratterizzati abbastanza bene e tutti hanno un ruolo molto importante sia nella vita di Nora che nella storia narrata.
Per quello che riguarda il mistero devo dire che non è stato molto semplice arrivare alla soluzione. Non non sono riuscita da subito a capire chi avesse architettato il tutto. I miei sospetti si alternavano tra varie persone.
Lo stile della Beyman come dicevo, mi ha ricordato moltissimo le storie di altre autrici americane di romantic suspense. È scorrevole e coinvolgente riuscendo a farmi immergere completamente nella storia.

Guilia Beyman is an Italian author and this book was translated from the Italian book entitled 'Prima di dire addio.' Although Guilia is Italian her books are set in the US which is an interesting mix. As someone passionate about all things Italian and who writes crime novels primarly set in the UK but with a strong Italian influence and many Italian characters I was keen to read Guilia's book. The English version is available as an ebook and readily available from Amazon.
I found this to be an enjoyable and fast read and Guilia is very good at leaving enough dangling at the end of a chapter to make the reader continue reading. Guilia has a very easy writing style and I can tell that she has been a screenwriter as she writes great dialogue. I really took to her central character Nora who is a very well-rounded character.
If you are looking for blood and guts and lots of dead bodies then this is not the book for you, as this is definitely a cozy crime novel. It doesn't have a particularly complicated plot but then neither did many of Agatha Christie's books and they are not short of appeal.
I don't want to give away the plot as that spoils the read, but let's say Nora is possessed with certain 'gifts' that most of us don't have.
All in all I'd recommend this book. Good to curl up with on a cold winter's evening. It only took me a few hours to read it and I am looking forward to reading the second book in the series 'A Cry in the Shadows.'

Nora is grieving for the loss of her husband, who has been killed during a bank robbery. The story starts this way, and as a reader you already feel hooked, you somehow feel her pain, and you start to care about this lovely character, as if she were a close friend. There are many surprises in store for Nora, and our heroine is thrown into a world of mystery, turmoil, where her emotions are shattered in such a way that sometimes she wonders about her mental sanity.
I found myself glued to this book until 1 or 2 am, I just didn't want to put it down. It has you guessing, wondering and yet, it's never predictable, and things never turn out as you expect. I could see this novel turned into a film, as it's packed with action, drama, surprises, it would make a great movie. But it's also a fantastic book, something that really gets you involved and makes you forget about your ordinary life. That for me, is what a good book is all about.

Joe and Nora Cooper were going to enjoy their later years in their newly purchased dream home on Martha's Vineyard. But Joe has been killed, and not only that, he sold their dream home without even telling her. Nora doesn't believe her husband would do something like that, but maybe she didn't know her husband of thirty-five years as well as she thought she did. Searching for answers she gets a little help from Joe in the form of Scrabble letters - a game loved by their whole family. Nora uncovers one nasty truth after another until she has all the answers she was looking for.
This book was good! It was so well-crafted. The story was believable - nothing was far-fetched or "convenient". It never dragged on. There were lots of twists and suspense. The characters were believable and well-developed. Unputdownable!

This book was different than what I expected, but that doesn't mean I didn't enjoy it. I read it on a car trip and found it to be a fantastic car read. The chapters were short so you made quick progress through the book. I enjoyed the story and was surprised at the ending. I wasn't expecting the paranormal aspect when I began this book, so I was hesitant when that was introduced but I found the topic to be handled nicely and only added to the overall story. It was an easy read and kept me guessing and wondering about how everything and everyone was connected throughout the entire story. I look forward to reading more books by Giulia Beyman!

I got this book for free through Goodreds First-Reads giveaway by Amazon publishing. Overall I like this book. It has a slight supernatural element to a mystery story. The only thing I didn't like was the discovery of a diary that might explain a missing girl's past and motivation to leave her family. I mean how does the grandma have the diary and not tell anyone what it reveals. I like how three different incidents (missing girl, murder of a husband, and an almost secret selling of a cottage)and people involved in those situations are connected. The story is short (224 pages) but it's nice little mystery novel to read on a rainy day.

I didn't have a clue what to expect from this book. It started well and then in the last hundred pages I really got into and I must say that I really liked it. The story is well written and thought out. I didn't exactly know where the story was going, but it made it interesting and it made me suspicious of almost everybody. I also loved the supernatural kind of element to it which I really didn't expect, but was pleasantly surprised by.

Giulia Beyman has given us a winning character in Nora Copper. I identified with Nora while reading of her emotional struggles, and cheered her as she tried to unravel the mysteries. The book is a well-done cozy, with a little supernatural thrown in, and very enjoyable. I look forward to reading more of Nora's adventures. I only wish more of Ms. Beyman's work were translated into English

Loved the local setting in Boston and the Vineyard. Some mystery, some hauntings, and plenty of suspense. Will try another Beyman novel soon.

È il primo romanzo della serie “Nora Cooper” e non vedo già l’ora di leggere anche gli altri suoi libri.
Nora è là protagonista principale. 53 anni agente immobiliare, sposata da una vita con Joe, tenente di polizia.
Dopo 35 anni di matrimonio, acquistano un bellissimo cottage dove vogliono passare lì la vecchiaia, non appena Joe andrà in pensione.
Un tragico evento però romperà gli equilibri. Joe viene assassinato durante una rapina in banca. Per Nora è devastante l’assenza del marito, ma cerca di tirare avanti per la figlia Meg e i tre nipotini. Oltretutto Meg ha anche appena divorziato…
Eppure una lettera rimetterà a dura prova gli equilibri che stava cercando di ricrearsi Nora: suo marito ha incassato un assegno di un anticipo e ha venduto il cottage a sua insaputa.
Possibile che suo marito, compagno, amico, era niente meno che un bugiardo?
Tutta la sua vita andrebbe messa in discussione.

Una donna dilaniata dal dolore per la perdita di suo marito, che troverà la forza di indagare e di reagire. La morte e l’aldilà. La paura e la vendetta. L’inquietudine e il sospetto.
Assolutamente da leggere
Nora è là protagonista principale. 53 anni agente immobiliare, sposata da una vita con Joe, tenente di polizia.
Dopo 35 anni di matrimonio, acquistano un bellissimo cottage dove vogliono passare lì la vecchiaia, non appena Joe andrà in pensione.
Un tragico evento però romperà gli equilibri. Joe viene assassinato durante una rapina in banca. Per Nora è devastante l’assenza del marito, ma cerca di tirare avanti per la figlia Meg e i tre nipotini. Oltretutto Meg ha anche appena divorziato…
Eppure una lettera rimetterà a dura prova gli equilibri che stava cercando di ricrearsi Nora: suo marito ha incassato un assegno di un anticipo e ha venduto il cottage a sua insaputa.
Possibile che suo marito, compagno, amico, era niente meno che un bugiardo?
Tutta la sua vita andrebbe messa in discussione.

Prima di dire addio è il primo volume della serie mystery Nora Cooper, chiamata così per il nome della protagonista.
Nora Cooper è una donna matura che ha perso il marito prematuramente e per di più scopre che Joe ha venduto a sua insaputa la casa che avevano acquistato da poco a Martha's Vineyard. Preoccupata di non aver mai davvero conosciuto suo marito, qualcuno sfrutta il gioco dello scarabeo per lasciarle uno strano messaggio. Che sia Joe?
Le premesse sono davvero intriganti ma c’è qualcosa che non me lo rende indimenticabile.
Le vicende sono raccontate attraverso vari punti di vista, ma il predominante resta quello di Nora, una donna indipendente che cerca di venire a patti con la perdita improvvisa dell’amore della sua vita. È una storia scorrevole, piacevole, non troppo lunga e leggera, anche se, alcuni aspetti andavano approfonditi.
Per quanto riguarda il lato mystery è un caso non troppo intricato, anzi tendente al classico ma con una bella risoluzione finale. Mentre per quanto riguarda il lato romantico (Nora stessa e la figlia) ho trovato l’idea carina ma non è l’aspetto predominante.
Ho percepito poco Martha's Vineyard, il posto che fa da sfondo alla storia, anche se ne ho già sentito parlare (esiste una serie di film “gialli” della Hallmark ambientata proprio lì).
In conclusione, un giallo alla Jessica Fletcher con un tocco di paranormale e romanticismo.

📖 Giallo con elementi paranormali | Autoconclusivo

A volte, un messaggio dal nulla basta a cambiare tutto.
Non conoscevo Giulia Beyman, ma dopo aver letto la sua biografia ho capito subito perché questo romanzo mi aveva attirata. L’ho trovato per caso su Amazon Unlimited e ho deciso di lasciarmi guidare dal titolo. È stata una bella scelta.
La protagonista, Nora, non è la classica investigatrice solitaria. È una donna vera. È stata moglie, madre, ora è nonna… e quando perde il marito, non perde sé stessa. Si ricostruisce. Con dignità e intuizione, senza effetti speciali. E proprio per questo ti entra dentro.
Uno degli aspetti che ho amato di più è come Beyman semina dubbi. Il colpevole resta nell’ombra fino alla fine, ogni piccolo dettaglio ti fa cambiare idea. La tensione non è mai urlata, ma costante. E la componente paranormale — dosata con intelligenza — non toglie credibilità alla storia. La arricchisce.
Anche i personaggi secondari sono ben costruiti, in particolare Meg, la figlia di Nora: fragile, stanca, viva. Il romanzo alterna i punti di vista, senza mai perdere coerenza. L’unico punto debole, per me, sono alcuni monologhi interiori un po’ lunghi — ma non rallentano davvero il ritmo.
Il libro è autoconclusivo, eppure quando l’ho chiuso non ero pronta a dire addio. Nora era diventata una presenza familiare, una di quelle donne che vorresti avere accanto nelle notti difficili.
Non so ancora se tornerò a leggere i seguiti. Ma so che lo farò per lei.
Quattro stelle. Non per quello che manca.
Ma per quello che spero di trovare ancora, se deciderò di restare in ascolto.

Questo è il primo libro della serie mistery thriller dove ha cone protagonista Nora Cooper che è una donna particolare ovvero con un dono speciale e misterioso.
Ho iniziato a leggere questo libro per puro caso,è mai mi sarei immaginata di imbattermi in un bel libro con tanti misteri e un pò di paranormale che rende tutto più adrenalinico.
La protagonista non e una poliziotta, come sono abituata ormai nella maggior parte dei thriller gialli,ma una donna normale o quasi?
Dovrà affrontare la morte del marito in circostanze davvero strane e non solo!
Ma non posso dirci davvero di più!
Posso solo dire che in alcuni momenti ho strabuzzato gli occhi mentre leggevo!
Un finale adrenalinico che mi ha tenuta sveglia per un Po!!

Awesome. A great read that has ghosts, murder, revenge and a cold blooded scheme to hoodwink a widow. Terrific plot - really had me stumbling in the dark as to who the spider in the centre of the web was. Great normal characters who show grit and determination when faced with loss and the paranormal.
Her husband's death has knocked her for six and now this. How could he have sold their cottage without telling her? Then the Scrabble tiles telling her he didn't. Yes he was the family Scrabble king but this was impossible, wasn't it? The more she looks into the whole thing the more questions she has. Now with his detective partner looking into it, could they get answers? A disappearance of a young girl 8 years ago, her diary, an ex-con and an elaborate scheme. Will the questions finally be answered and will they get to the truth?

Primo libro di una serie che mi è piaciuta e mi ha intrigato e che mi ha spinto a leggere in sequenza i primi sei volumi della serie.
Nora Cooper è una vedova con un dono particolare che le consente di mettersi in comunicazione con i morti che, in questo modo, le danno labili indizi per aiutarla a risolvere dei crimini.
Tutto ha inizio con la tragica morte del marito Joe durante una rapina, marito che sembra aver venduto poco prima del tragico evento, a sua insaputa, il cottage da poco acquistato nell’isola di Martha’s Vineyard.
Avvincente ed appassionante, un giallo particolare, ben scritto e costruito, che spazia nel paranormale e che mi ha intrigato e convinto.

The writing is very repetitive, and I constantly wondered if I was rereading a passage I had read earlier, but no, just saying the same thing over and over again. I also didn't particularly like the paranormal stuff, it was too little to make it an interesting aspect of Nora's mystery solving skills, and too much to be just a forgettable curiosity.
I have read other books by Beyman that did not suffer from these shortcomings, so I will probably read another of this series before giving up on it.

Ho scoperto questo libro per puro caso, così come immaginavo una protagonista diversa, la classica detective e invece mi sono ritrovata una cinquantenne agente immobiliare, determinata, che a pochi mesi dal trasferimento nella nuova casa, una villa nella rinomata Martha's Vineyard, si ritrova vedova e a fare i conti con una strana situazione: l'atto di vendita della casa "firmato" dal marito a sua insaputa. Dopo tutto ciò vi dirò che è stata una piacevole sorpresa, una protagonista non comune che ha cambiato il mio modo di "vedere" questa nuova lettura del mese.
Una lettura del mio genere preferito che ha anche altre particolarità: un tocco di paranormale, dei messaggi misteriosi con le tessere di un gioco che rendono più accattivante la storia.
Nora quindi si ritrova a fare i conti con la morte improvvisa del marito ma soprattutto con una persona totalmente diversa da quella con cui aveva condiviso gran parte della sua vita. Eppure quei messaggi indicano che non è così, che sotto c'è qualcosa di diverso. Se in un primo momento pensa di impazzire, gli eventi successivi la spingono a chiedere aiuto al collega e miglior amico di famiglia, a far riaprire il caso sulla morte del marito, a tante coincidenze che convergono sulla vendita, su eventi di cronaca del passato che coinvolgono anche la figlia di Nora.
Una storia ben intricata, con protagonisti più o meno importanti ben "disegnati" e caratterizzati, che in un primo momento sviano dal vero colpevole dato che sembrano essere loro!
Una lettura veloce, appassionante, con una descrizione dei luoghi così ben fatta che mi ha portato a volerli scoprire cercandoli su internet che mi hanno fatto venir voglia di partire!
Una serie che continuerò incuriosita dalla protagonista, su cosa potrebbe accaderle nelle prossime storie...

Appassionata del genere thriller e vedendo che questo era il primo di una saga di ben undici libri, mi sono buttata a capofitto nella lettura. Devo dire che quando c'è di mezzo il soprannaturale il mio interesse un po' si spegne. In questo caso, però, la lettura è stata piacevole. Ben congegnato il colpo di scena. Tutto sommato è un libro coinvolgente, anche se sono sicura che con questa base si poteva fare molto meglio.
