It’s THE party of the season. Socialites, artists and A-list stars have been invited to Morgan Ward’s birthday bash, including Angelina’s boss, Delilah.
For months, Angelina has been looking at the preparations from afar, but never did she imagine that, come the day, Miss Delilah would put her in a gorgeous gown and bring her along as her ‘plus one.’
Wandering from crowded room to crowded room in the sumptuous mansion, Angelina grows overwhelmed and escapes onto a balcony, only to find it occupied by her host. That first meeting leaves her struggling for her very life, but she soon gets an unexpected do-over.
Meeting Morgan Ward for the first time all over again, Angelina finds herself falling into his arms… But is it all only a fantasy?
Kallysten is a writer of romance novels and short stories, most of them with paranormal elements.
Her first eBooks were published by Linden Bay Romance in 2005. The defunct Venus Press subsequently published a few of her short stories. Because so many of her stories are linked as series and part of the same universe, she decided it would make sense to have them all in the same place, which is why she self-published, first with the co-op Alinar Publishing and now on her own. When she sees calls for submissions that speak to her muse, she sometimes tries for them, and was published this way by Samhain and Torquere.
In early 2012, I was talking with a writer friend about our plans for the year and somehow the topic of ‘millionaire’ romances came up. At the time, I remember telling my friend that I had no interest in writing one of those. My muse must have noted that down and cackled at the thought of making me eat my words at some point…
Fast forward to October; because of some difficulties in my personal life I was struggling to finish Beyond The Edge, the sequel to both the On The Edge and Out of the Box series. To get back into the swing of things, I reread part of the Out of the Box series and found myself missing Virginia’s voice. For unity’s sake, all of Beyond The Edge is written in the 3rd person POV, while I always enjoyed getting right into Virginia’s head for her stories in 1st person POV.
It had been a while since I wrote in 1st person and I missed it, but none of my planned projects lent itself to a 1st person story. So of course, just to throw a wrench in my plans, my muse dangled a story idea in front of me that would work with 1st person; a story with – you guessed it – a millionaire hero. And because I do enjoy my heroes with fangs, he turned out to be a vampire, too. But just to change things up, and because that initial story idea didn’t fit in any of my existing series, I decided to set the book in a different universe where the existence of vampires is not known as it is in On The Edge for example.
I started writing with only a vague idea of where I was going, but slipping into Angelina’s mind was a treat. She’s a rambler, very much like I am, and she can’t tell a story without getting on tangents that tell a lot about who she is and how she sees the world. I already know her digressions are turning some readers off, but I find they’re very much a part of who she is, with a thousand thoughts fluttering through her mind even as she tells the story of how she met Morgan Ward.
I posted the first part of the story on Facebook as a treat for my fans, and their reaction was enough to push me into writing more. Angelina was all too happy to continue telling her story. Morgan, so far, hasn’t shared a lot of himself with her or with us, but I’ve taken a peek into the man’s thoughts and life and I’ve grown very fond of him. I look forward to revealing more of him in the upcoming sequels.
One last anecdote about how Morgan Ward got his name. It started with his sister, Delilah. In my head, she looks, sounds and acts a lot like a character from a favorite show who was called Lilah Morgan. ‘Lilah’ is the pet name her brother has for Delilah, and ‘Morgan’ became his name. As for Ward, it also comes from Delilah: early in my writing, I had this snippet of a scene in which she declares Angelina will be Morgan’s ward. The pun of making it his name was too good to pass, and the word will appear in one form or another in the titles for all sequels… not that I know yet how many there will be! As long as Angelina keeps talking to me, I’m game.
What an excellent start to the series. I was riveted, to this book. I felt like I was in it, my eyes never left the page, I had to wiggle to the bathroom, cuz I didn't want to stop reading it, till it was finished. Now on to book two, with an empty bladder lol.
Fabulous cover the Ward of the Vampire by Kallysten drew me into this vampire story with characters that captured me, making me want to know more as they took me to a wonderful place of magic and romance.
This is the first book I have read by Kallysten and given my love for paranormal/paranormal romance I was excited to have gotten an advanced copy for review and to be introduced to a new author. Ward of the Vampire is a short erotic paranormal romance written in the first person and puts us inside the head of Angelina. Angelina works for Miss Deliah as her personal assistant/do-it-all and yes she has pretty much done it all. Miss Deliah has a brother, the reclusive philanthropist Morgan Ward who throws an annual gala for the rich, famous, and beautiful. Miss Deliah surprises Angelina right before the gala with the news she will be attending with her and you don't say NO to Miss Deliah or well Angelina doesn't. What follows is where the story gets juicy so I won't say anymore, but I guarantee you will be mistaken, thrown off balance, and re-reading parts to make sure you aren't experiencing a head trip. I think one of my favorite parts of the story is being in Angelina's head, she is funny, quick witted, and had me laughing out loud.
This is not a complete story. This is a little over 40 pages of the story which the author calls "an installment". I have to admit when it did just stop suddenly I was shocked and thought "NO, NO, NO, it can't stop here, this is cruel!" Yes, I was that invested in the story and that is a sign of not only a great book, but a great author.
After my distress, I calmed enough to look to see if this story will continue and to my utter relief I found out it will. On Kallysten's website she has the following - "The second part, My Reluctant Warden, will come out in May, and I hope to have new installments every other month." I will definitely be keeping an eye out for the next installment in this book as Kallysten has caught me hook, line, and sinker with Ward of the Vampire.
***I received a free advanced copy of this book for an honest review. All thoughts, comments, and ratings are my own.***Ward of the Vampire
There are enough accolades on this novella to fill pages and I won't list many more for the story, it was exceptional for what it was AND it was an awesome marketing tool since it allows people the ability for little money (99 cents or less) can get a sense of the story before they get the novel (which I will).
Perhaps if more authors did this type of thing we might get better books LOL. Since I read hundreds a year I hate it when I sludge through a book to get to the "good parts" and the good part is when it says THE END, this one grabs you shortly after you start and leaves you wanting more without the frustration of 2-3 page teasers. Good effort and looks to be the start of an amazing series.
Once i started reading this i didnt put it down till i reached the end, it kept me hooked, right from the off it had a feel to that you knew there was something interesting that was gunna happen and boy was there, it was a very hot something that happened, i cant wait for there to be some more to this story and find out more about Morgan, there is diffidently more to him than his handsome face :-P this is a brilliant story and well worth the read and i recommend it to any one that likes there tall dark and broody Vampires ;-)
Favorite Line “Except that, as far as I can recall, there weren’t vampires in the fairy tale, and the godmother didn’t offer Cinderella to the prince as a midnight snack.”
Angelina is the personal assistant to the sister of Morgan Ward. The man who throws parties people dream of going to and Angelina's boss has invited her to go with her. She even had a dress made custom for her! What amazing luck or is it?!? When Angelina meets Morgan something strange happens.....
Great beginning! On to the next book!!
I was given this book in exchange for an honest review
The Low Down There's only three characters in this erotic shortie. There's Angelina, who's POV is how the story is written. There is Delilah or Lilah as her brother calls her. Delilah is Angelina's boss. The third person in this story is Morgan Ward, Delilah's brother.
At the emphatic urging of his mother and sister, Morgan ward has decided to throw himself a birthday party. It was to be THE PARTY of parties and everyone who was anyone was going to be there. Angelina, who's semi-stalkerish and gossipy nature delighted me, had been following all the news reports on the shindig. She never expected that she'd be a guest though.
The Characters As I stated earlier I found Angelina a thoroughly delightful character. She's a bit of a gossip but she seems amiable enough. She's extremely happy with her position as Delilah's assistant but to tell you the truth she's a little to devoted to her boss IMO.
Delilah on the other hand is a cold-hearted and calculating bitch. Her behavior and attitude was clearly snobbish but her deviousness was hidden till the end. I really liked the contrast between Delilah and Angelina.
I found Morgan kinda infuriating. His behavior kept changing. He was hot and cold but when he was hot he was HOT!!!
The Writing The writing in this was smooth and easy to follow despite the fact that the story is written in the first person. It also seemed as if Angelina was talking to herself but I found that endearing LOL.
The Plot Though the story was short the plot, with all it's subtleties, was awesome. There were a few twists that were pretty cool and took me by surprise. I'm anxious to see what happens next as the story ended with a cliffhanger.
Cover Comments Don't let the cover deceive you. The plainness of it dos not reflect what lies behind it. I love how the ruby cuff link stands out.
Ward of the Vampire isn't quite like Kallysten's other vampire stories. The change, while minute, was refreshing and I definitely want to read more of this story. I wonder what Kally has in store for these guys!
I. Want. More. Really Ward of the Vampire was a wonderful novella that begins a tale and world that I cannot wait to get more of. We are left with a very cliffhanger ending that tells of more coming soon, and I cannot wait!
We are introduced to our main characters, Angelina and Morgan Ward-- Angelina’s being the POV the whole story is in. We get a very good glimpse of her life working for Miss Delilah, who turns out to be quite horrible in my opinion.
I am very intrigued by Morgan, we do not learn much about him except that he is very rich, a vampire and Miss Delilah’s sister. I hope the second book tells us a lot more about him.
Overall Ward of the Vampire was a wonderful vampire novella that had a little bit of everything and will definitely leave reading wanting the sequel ASAP!
*I received a hardcover/paperback/eBook copy/ARC of this book for free to review from the author/publisher/tour site; this in no way influenced my review, all opinions are 100% honest and my own.
Angelina works for Miss Delilah. Miss Delilah has received an invitation from her brother, Morgan Ward. Before the party, Miss Delilah has a surprise for Angelina. The party is where all the action takes place. Kallysten has me wishing that I was in Angelina’s shoes. And then when Lina goes to the party her life changes.
If you like sexy vampire stories, Kallysten will not disappoint you. She packs a great paranormal love story in just a small amount of pages. If you have a short amount of time and are looking for something that will grab you from the first page, you will want to read Ward of the Vampire. It will also have you wanting to read more of Kallysten’s work. I know you will enjoy whatever she has written - her next book is coming out in April and is titled Beyond the Edge. You may also want to check out her web site, http://kallysten.net/.
I was provided a copy of The "Ward of the Vampire" from the author for the purpose of an honest review. I was not compensated for this review – all conclusions are my own responsibility.
I don't normally read vampire/paranormal romance novels, but sometimes we need to step out of our comfort zone. I'm so glad I was able to read this book. I loved it!! It has a vampire sister (Delilah) & brother (Morgan Ward) & a human (Angelina). Angelina has been working as a Private Assistant for Delilah for almost 5 years now. Angelina has never met Morgan, only spoken to him on the phone when he calls to talk to his sister. On the eve of his 40th birthday bash, which he is hosting, Delilah brings Angelina with her to the most talked about event in New York City. It's a "who's who" list of attendees. There's some mind control & did that really happen or was it my imagination? This story flowed very nicely & I would love to have more of Morgan Ward & Angelina. Please tell me there will be more. Definitely a hot, steamy quick read. I will be reading more books written by this author because I enjoyed this book so much.
I was offered this ARC to read & give my honest review.
Overall it was a wonderful read! Though it was too short for me. But I had questions such as did Morgan have the ability to do something with time? It seemed as though he did but you were never told that in words. What about this replacement that Morgan speaks about? Also the ending was not what I was expecting. What happened or should I say what will happen? It is a real cliff hanger. I hope this is a series as I can see it being one. The characters were great especially Morgan. Let me just say he seemed to be some yummy on so many levels even though he is rude and arrogant at times. I did wonder myself if Angelina was having herself a fantasy or not!
Angelina (Lina) is a personal assistant to Delilah who has an agenda in mind between Morgan and Angelina. Though Angelina does not know this until later, she finds out something is not right with the family and could it be too late for her.
Now there is some romance in the book so this is for a older and mature audience.
Tis the party of the century when some started receiving the blue envelopes back in August, celebrating Ward’s Birthday in December.
When Angelina’s boss, Delilah (Ward’s sister) asks her come to condo the night of the party, she unexpectedly invited to “tag” along as Delilah’s plus one. Delilah has some surprises up her preverbal shelve with some unique twist and turns.
I found the character, Angelina slightly annoying in the beginning of the book because she gave the mystery of the book away but hey whatever… I found myself not wanting to put the book down after the annoying part was done and out of the way.
The book ended not on a cliff hanger but left this reader wanting to read more and looking forward to it as well. I receive the book from the author for an honest review. Thank you :)
Primitive, enthralling, alluring, and highly recommended.
As a huge admirer of paranormal romance I am always looking for new authors; hence my excitement when I received this book for review.
This is a quick, erotic paranormal romance written in the first person voice of the heroine, Angelina. The storyline isn’t completely unique but, the approach the author took compelled this reader toward the end. I’ve never been a fan of the cliffhanger but, in this case it gave the story an increased level of intrigue. I am looking forward to the rest of Morgan and Angelina’s story. Hopefully, we don’t have to wait long.
Disclosure: This ebook was provided to me free of charge by the author for the sole purpose of an honest review. All thoughts, comments, and ratings are my own.
I had the privilege to read Ward of the Vampire by Kallysten for an honest review. It is a short read only 44 pages, but I loved reading them. In this story Angelina works for Delilah as her personal assistant. There is a big party, and Delilah take Angelina with her. She meets Delilah’s brother Morgan who is the host and birthday boy. In only a few pages, you feel like you know that characters and that Angelina is talking to you about what has happened. I really hope there is more to come about Morgan and Angelina because I want to know what happens next. Kallysten tells a beautiful story and leaves you wanting more. :)
Ward of the Vampire brings the readers a peek into the life of Angilina, Miss Delilah, and Morgan Ward. With many strange happenings, mysterious twist and turns, throw in a little fantasy with heat, mind controll and you have the beginning of a Exciting series! Kallysten will feed readers minds with this thrilling hot book and leave them wanting more. Thankfull this is book one with more to come.
It took me a little bit to get into it but then it turned interesting. Though it feels very unfinished, so I'm left feeling unsatisfied wanting to know what happens next. So hopefully a sequel with follow.
Added- So found out there is a sequel coming. I look forward to it because I would really like to know what happens. :)
This book had me cracking up. I love the heroine’s sense of humor. She reminds me of myself. I think I would’ve reacted pretty much the same way. Kallysten drew me in where I was there, confused right along with Lina. I had forgotten all about the first scenario, too wrapped up in the next. Can’t wait to read more.
Angelina gets invited as her boss´s +1 to the party of the season, but little does she know that her boss has ulterior motives. Vampires and smut, a quick read with an ending that leaves you wanting a sequel. 3,5 Stars
I didn't think I was going to like this book at all. The first part was hard for me to read for some reason but I have this problem with allot of the books I read. Into the book I enjoyed it and it is a short read. I would like to read more in the future about the characters.
An interesting start to a series, with a first person narrative I didn't find too horrendously annoying. (I am not generally a first person POV fan.) Flawed however, as so many serials are, by just randomly ending without accomplishing anything notable.
Angelina was thrown into the world of Morgan Ward, by his sister and mother meddling in his love life. She had no idea her boss or brother were vampires. She went to his birthday party as his sister's guest not knowing she could ever leave without dying because she was put under compulsion by her boss. A great story and I had to read all the books..
I chose to read and review this book. I love reading about vampires and this was a new author for me but I loved reading the book. It is well written nice plot and characters but felt it was missing something still enjoyable
Excellent writing, if you like vampire stories, I recomend this one! Compulsion, confusion but a beautifully developed love story based on trust and understanding. Well done
This is everything you want a serial instalment about vampires to be — and more. Honestly, I've only ever read one other book from Kallysten but I find myself enthralled (pun intended) by her vibrant way of writing. The book is short and will have you wishing for the next instalment in no time.
Good reading but kind of short. It leaves you hanging and wondering what will happen next. Being held prisoner in My Wards mansion and unable to leave is scary. Now I have to read the next book to find out what happens next.?
