I loved that this novel was set just after the end of World War I and shed light on the difficulty of soldiers and their families after soldiers return home. In this first novel of the Till We Meet Again Series, Annemarie looks forward to the return of her fiance Gilbert. Gilbert is a changed man following the war. When the Clouds Roll By is about how they both adjust to his return. It was an enjoyable novel and I look forward to the next in the series.
After WW I, Annemarie Kendall anxiously awaits the return of her fiance, Lt. Gilbert Ballard. What she dosent know was that he was seriously injured in the closing days of the War. On the ship home, Gilbert is a afraid that he will become a burden to her and wonders if he should break the engagement off. Army Chaplain Samuel Vicary befriends Gilbert on the journey and after seeing a picture of his fiance, finds himself falling for Annemarie. All three struggle with life after the War and moving forward. The female protagonist is full of strength and dreams despite the changing world around her. However I found Gilbert too bitter and broken and I cared more for the supporting characters in the story. While the author did a fine job with the affect of War on a soldier and the dealing with the changes after,it was a big disappointment that all the story lines in this book were not resolved and I don't think it "wowed" me enough to continue on to book two.
I wasn't really a fan of this book. It was interesting, but I didn't like the story of Mary. She seemed really disillusioned and walking a dangerous path - begging God to change the bad guy she's with because she "can't help" loving him.
I didn't feel very close to the characters or really connect to their stories. Ah, it just wasn't for me. (Though it kept me entertained during lunch break at work each day). But someone else may very well enjoy it better than I did!
This book deals with soldiers coming home from WW1 and the heartache that everyone dealt with when trying to make the world back to normal after war. One of the main characters is dealing with shell shock and a morphine addiction. I really appreciated how it was portrayed, because they didn't gloss over it, and yet as unhappy with the character as I was, what he was doing made sense.
The main female character was well written, complex, and her reactions felt very realistic. Although I'm not like her, I could still relate to her, which is always a plus. She changed throughout the book, just like you'd expect in real life.
I wasn't a fan of how much romance there was, so that was a downfall. Other than that I enjoyed the book a lot.
Beginning just after the Armistice, Myra Johnson's When the Clouds Roll By is an inspirational story of the Great War and the repercussions it inflicted on the generation who came of age in its shadow.
Though I expected it from reading the jacket description, I really appreciated how Johnson explored war injuries in her narrative. Gilbert's depression and subsequent addiction to pain killers was a tragically common fate for many wounded doughboys, as was the emotional trauma suffered by those like Samuel, whose scars were invisible to the naked eye.
Another thing I liked about this one was how Johnson treated the religious aspects of her story. When the Clouds Roll By was released by Abingdon Press, a faith based publisher, but it was the historic setting and content rather than Christian themes that drew my attention to this piece. As a predominantly nonsecular reader I was worried I might find the underlying messages overbearing or preachy, but this was not the case. Though essential to the central story, Johnson managed a nice balance between the spiritual and secular, making her work enjoyable for believers and nonbelievers alike.
My sole complaint was how conveniently the love triangle was resolved. I like happy endings as much as the next reader, but I couldn't help feeling Johnson's conclusion lacked the authenticity I crave. I don't want to spoil anything, but in the end, it felt too neatly packaged for my tastes.
When the Clouds Roll By is a light historical with feel-good message. A perfect choice for those looking for both religion inspired fiction or gentler stories of World War I.
When the Clouds Roll By is a poignant love story set during and after the first World War. Both heroes struggle with some form of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Guilt, accompanied by flashbacks, overwhelm these men as they try to assimilate into the life they left behind when they joined the service. The "normal life" they once had is gone forever.
The heroine, Annemarie, has less flaws, but she's still a complex character as she struggles with her conflicting feelings about the two men. She considers one is a stranger, while the other has been a close friend since childhood. But now that the war is over, which one does she really know? Which one should she love?
It's refreshing that Annemarie is a potter. Johnson really did her homework in this area. I've thrown a few bowls (both on the wheel and against the wall) and she describes the sights, smells, feels and physicality of throwing pots accurately. I also enjoyed the love story between Annemarie and the man she chose to love. There was growth of all three characters and a push-pull tension between them throughout the book.
If you like complex, brooding men, independent women and happily-ever-afters, you'll love this book. My thanks to Abingdon Press for a copy in exchange for my fair and honest review.
Myra Johnson in her new book, “When The Clouds Roll By” Book One in the Till We Meet Again series published by Abingdon Press takes us into the life of Annemarie Kendall.
From the back cover: Sometimes, going home is the worst thing you can do.
World War I has ended, but returning to Hot Springs, Arkansas, means Lt. Gilbert Ballard has to face his fiance, who has no idea how badly he’s been wounded. Army Chaplain Samuel Vickary has helped Gilbert confront his postwar anxiety, but both men continue to struggle with the war’s aftermath in their lives.
Determined he won’t become a burden, Gilbert decides to break his engagement to Annemarie. Samuel does his best to convince Gilbert he’s a fool for giving Annemarie up, but he can’t deny—at least to himself—his own growing attraction to his best friend’s girl.
Caught in the middle and confused, Annemarie searches for the courage that can save them all—the courage for Samuel to reaffirm his faith, for Gilbert to leave the war behind, and for her own journey to become the woman God intended to be.
Stories set during or after World War I are hard to come by and good stories are even scarcer. Ms. Johnson has stepped up to the void and filled it with a winner. The title tells you the story is set after the war when you would think that the storm clouds of the war have passed. Ms. Johnson is writing about the clouds that come after the war when the soldiers came home shell-shocked or having what we call now PTSD or wounded or both and how does everyone deal with those clouds. Gilbert has his issues and really does not know how to cope in his new civilian life, Samuel has his issues and Annemarie is forced to deal with these new components in her life. This story had the potential to become a real downer but Ms. Johnson is a champion and not only kept it from going in that direction but she really kept it interesting and real. Ms. Johnson does an outstanding job of bringing her characters to life and you feel that you know and understand each of them and feel their individual pain. On top of that really want their romance to succeed. What a great way to start a new series. I am already looking forward to the next book.

Sharing my thoughts~ Ceramist Annemarie Kendall couldn't be happier when WWI comes to an end and her fiance is on his way home, but from his recent letters, she knows the war's changed him. What she doesn't know is if he'll still love her and want to marry her. After an injury that leaves him feeling dependent and less masculine, Lieutenant Gilbert Ballard isn't sure he want to return home to Hot Springs. Bitter and in constant pain, the last pill he wants to swallow is pity on his fiance's face.
Johnson sets up a robust conflict when Gilbert talks to Army Chaplain Samuel Vickary about his dilemma over Annemarie while on the ship headed home.
"He studied the girl in the portrait and realized with sudden certainty that if things were different--if he were coming home to a woman like Annemarie--he'd fight harder for her love than any doughboy ever fought on the Western Front."
After hearing Gilbert's intentions, how can Samuel help but fall a little in love with Annemarie before he ever sets eyes on her? And then when he meets her, she's more lovely and sweet than he imagined. But Samuel's suffering his own crisis, a result of the war.
"If he could just be certain God still listened. If he dared to hope the doors of heaven hadn't been barred against him for eternity."
Gilbert tends to be a bit cranky at times, but in my book, he's still a hero because of the pain he's in and the suffering he endured. Samuel refuses to move in on Gilbert's territory, and insists that Gilbert not make any foolish, rash decisions. I won't tell you which man I was rooting for. You can make your own choice. But I will admit to being very satisfied with the ending. :)
While this story is fictional, the characterization was so life-like and the conflict so believable. I can imagine similar scenarios happening back then, even now. Men and women still return home from war, scarred emotionally and physically.
While I'm not a huge history buff, I enjoyed how the author tucked in little nuggets of historical goodies, like how people conserved food during World War I. That, plus the tidbits about Hot Springs and the nice sub-plot that ran through the book made the story so rich and complex.
Although this book is a hefty 338 pages, I finished it in only a couple sittings. After being forced to put it down the first time (you know, sleep, work, life...), I wasn't going to put it down again until I found out who won Annemarie's heart. When the Clouds Roll By is a winner, and I'm excited that there's another two books in the series!

REVIEW: This new-to-me author captured my heart with this wonderful World War I historical fiction read. Set at the end of the war, military personnel are returning home from the War completely changed and having to adapt to life back at home. Suffering from horrendous physical and mental damage, they aren't the people they used to be. Gilbert and Samuel both suffered from their war experiences; and, in turn, they looked at themselves and the people around them differently. I loved Annemarie and how strong she was and how hard she tried to help them through the changes that war had made in their lives. Gilbert frustrated me no end as he continued to drown himself in self-pity, morphine, and using other people along with a grouchy attitude. Samuel suffered in silence instead of getting help in dealing with his mental suffering until he finally breaks. Johnson totally captured the post-war agony experienced by all military personnel and definitely brought the aftermath of World War I to life. A good strong faith thread focused on second chances and forgiveness. This is book one in her series Till We Meet Again. I will definitely be reading the rest of this series.
FAVORITE QUOTES: "The past is behind us and the future is in God's hands."
"..your promise of the Lord's forgiveness gave me something to hold onto, a reason to live so's maybe I could yet become a better man."
"The burden of guilt is Satan's doing, not God's."
After waiting for her fiancé, Gilbert Ballard, to finally come home from fighting in the Great War in Europe, Annemarie Kendall is happy to receive the news he will arrive soon. Preparing to share a life with a man who has lost his leg, Annemarie has no idea of his other injuries. Gilbert doesn’t want to burden Annemarie with a disabled man and breaks the engagement. He encourages her to move on with her life and even tells his best friend and army chaplain, Samuel Vickary—who has shown an interest in Annemarie—to go ahead and claim Annemarie for himself. Samuel, however, is afraid to take that step, because he is convinced Gilbert will come to his senses and will want her back.
When Samuel becomes ill with the Spanish Flu, the Kendalls take him in and nurse him back to health. During this time, Annemarie feels a strong connection to him, and a close friendship develops. Samuel is head over heels in love with Annemarie, but still feels it is not his place nor the time to court her—not only because of Gilbert, but also because of the ghosts of the war haunting him. Then something happens that makes Annemarie start to think about her feelings for Samuel—is it a mere friendship she is experiencing, or is it more than that? And what are her feelings for Gilbert? When Gilbert doesn’t seem to wait for her and moves on with his life, Annemarie and Samuel dare to explore the possibility of a relationship. Can Annemarie let go of the love of her youth and move on with another man? Or will she go back to her first love?
An exceptional story about a young woman sorting out her feelings for two men scarred by war wounds. The one with physical wounds, the other with mental wounds—two men who are transformed by what they have seen in the war and must learn to let go of the horrible memories and the losses they have suffered.
The writing style is excellent! After having read the first pages, I was so drawn into the story that I knew this was going to be a great read…and I wasn’t disappointed! Although I’m normally not a big fan of two men vying for the hand of the same woman, this book is so good that it didn’t bother me at all. It has an original storyline and kept me guessing till the end. Highly recommended!
When the Clouds Roll By is the first in a new series by Myra Johnson. It’s set shortly after the end of World War I in Hot Springs, Arkansas, a destination renowned for its healing springs and the former Army-Navy hospital. The location is used to good effect as Gilbert receives treatment at one of the many bath houses and Samuel ministers to the wounded who have been sent to the hospital. The Spanish Influenza outbreak of 1918 to 1920 is also included in the plot line, with several scenes set around the hospital’s isolation unit. An important aspect of this novel is the highlighting of the difference between the physical and psychological wounds caused by the war. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) was more commonly known as shell-shock and casualties were often badly treated by today’s standards.
Gilbert is not a likable character, even after seeing the error of his ways, and you have to feel sorry for the nurse who gets caught up in his schemes. In contrast, Sam comes across as an honorable man trying to keep Gilbert and Annemarie together while fighting his own feelings for her. There are a number of minor characters featured, including Annemarie’s father, Gilbert’s brother, and the indomitable Mrs. Ballard who can’t quite help looking down her nose at her would-be daughter-in-law’s decision to work outside of the home.
Fans of wartime romance should enjoy this first book in the Till We Meet Again series. The next one is called Whisper Goodbye and will be out next April. Gilbert is a main character again; I can only hope he’s a little more pleasant.

The heartache, the personal toil of dealing with loss. For Annemarie is wise enough to stand up and tell Gilbert’s Mother no wedding plans will be made. This shows the deep side of the emotion that is waged in each, thec fiance, the mother, or siblings.
Such an awesome series. So much is misunderstood about what a terrible cost mentally a war puts on the survivors when they come home. The author does a fantastic job presenting what emotional strife they have to endure.
Annemarie Kendall, a potter, is ecstatic when the armistice is signed ending World War I. Her fiancée Lt. Gilbert Ballard can finally come home to Hot Springs, Arkansas and marry her. If only his letters made it seem like he wanted to. So, Annemarie isn't surprised, but still hurt, when Gilbert ends their engagement. When, Gilbert breaks it off with Annemarie, Sam tries to convince him he's making a mistake but he can't deny that he feels an attraction for her too. But tormented by his decisions and his mistakes and the memories of war, he doesn't feel worthy for love by Annemarie or God, let alone grace and he needs Annemarie to show him that he does deserve it.

With Sam and Gilbert's relationship destroyed over her and her heart broken by Gilbert, all three of them must try and put the war behind them and cling to the only One who can make things okay, God.

Will Sam fall in love with Annemarie despite his attempt to not or will his attempt be successful? Will Sam be able to leave his demons behind and trust in God or will he be tormented do the rest of his life? Will Gilbert be able to be a peace with his circumstances or will he become bitter and spiral downhill? ----------------------------------
Before this one, I had never read a book by Myra Johnson before and, after reason this book, I'm not sure why. I do know, though, that I loved this book and was surprised at the amount of drama and how emotionally charged it was. I've never read a love triangle this dramatic before, shockingly. Myra Johnson definitely captured how I imagine a love triangle would play out.
The romance in this book is kind of fast. Though I enjoyed it, there seemed to be something missing, maybe it's the doubt both of them feel about their feelings or maybe it's because of the slight lack of deep emotional connections. However, I do think that despite that it was a nice romance and had some very romantic moments that made me go, "aahh". This romance wasn't awful or even bad it just wasn't the best I've ever read.
This story is very emotionally driven. It's full of tears, anger, love, pain, and forgiveness. It really got your emotions involved whether it be pity, empathy, love, joy. I really had strong feelings towards a few characters in this story and because of that I would love to see Mary and Gilbert again in the next book and hopefully see a resolution to their issues and maybe a romance between them? This story was definitely a heart tugged and engaged me front he beginning.
The characters in this story had son real issues to work through during the course of this book. Particularly Sam and Gilbert. Some characters seemed a bit stuff and cardboard-like and had to figure out but the usually weren't very important to the story and didn't hurt the story too much. Annemarie's struggles seemed realistic to me. I mean if I started falling for a guys weeks after I got dumped I question my feelings too. I think the struggles the characters went through were realistic and heart-rending.
Myra Johnson definitely made me a fan. Though this book wasn't perfect, it was enjoyable and I did enjoy this read. In fact I devoured it and didn't want to put it down. I don't know how many books this author has but I intend to see if I can get my hands on any of them. I think this author has a great flair for drama and great storytelling abilities. This book comes highly recommended by me.
Overall, I loved this book though it did have some hitches. I enjoyed how realistic and gritty it was and watching each character coming to the realization that God loves them just as they are. This book is perfect for fans of love triangles, dramas, or WWI novels. This is best left to the adults. I give this book a four out of five.
*I received a complimentary copy of this novel in exchange for this review. All opinions expressed are my own.*
No one was anticipating the news more than families. Those looking for an end to the war were hoping that today would be different, and that they would receive news that it was finally over and the men and women would soon be returning home to waiting families and soon-to-be families. Yet not everyone was overly happy.
Annemarie Kendall knew things had changed over the time Gilbert Ballard has been serving in the war without ever speaking to him. The tone in his letters and what he wasn't saying, lead Annemarie to believe that Gilbert had changed. Sure she knew that he had suffered the loss of his leg as well as injured his arm but isn't love suppose to conquer all? Even war? Now facing him as she waits with her family and Gilbert's family to welcome him home, Annemarie is certain it will definitely be an unforgettable homecoming and one that will change the lives of them all now that the war is over. All Annemarie can hope is that she can show Gilbert that no matter what, she'll be with him all the way to the end.
Lt. Gilbert Ballard has been trying to imagine how he will manage now that he is half a man. Definitely not the man who conveyed his undying love and dedication to Annemarie before he left for the war. All he has been able to do it look at the faded photograph to help him remember what he had waiting for him when he returned back to Hot Springs, Arkansas. Not only a well-to-do family, but also the love of a woman who he had known his whole life. Beautiful beyond measure, she made sure to let him know how much she continued to love and support him, but how would Gilbert be able to provide for Annemarie now? He only hoped he could have enough courage to push past the pity she would feel for him and be grateful they hadn't married before the war.
Army Chaplain Samuel Vickary has been by Gilbert's side often fearing that the post traumatic stress disorder that is pulling at Gilbert will be able to be overcome when he reunites with Annemarie. He worried that during the long train trip home that Gilbert might find a way to take his own life without giving Annemarie a chance to show Gilbert that nothing has changed between them, even though in Gilbert's mind it has. If only he wasn't so drawn by her beauty and Gilbert's description of her kindness, he might be able to help more. But Samuel has his own war demons to face and one that has him questioning his own faith in God during the horrors he witnessed during the war. Would any of them be able to forget and move forward or will have the war changed them all forever?
I received When The Clouds Roll By by author Myra Johnson compliments of Abingdon Press for my honest review and received no monetary compensation for a favorable one. My love for history coupled with an unforgettable romance between Gilbert and Annemarie as well as the love of Samuel to help his two friends while the war continues to consume lives even though it's long over. This one is poignant and compelling, making me turn page after page in wondering in anticipation if it would turn out as expected. I was not disappointed. This is the story of being lost and then found and what happens when we let our feelings gain control over what we really want deep down inside. There is courage to be found in facing what we fear the most and I believe Myra Johnson did just that in this novel. I easily give this one a 5 out of 5 stars! This is the first novel in the Til We Meet Again Series and one I will be watching for!
When the Clouds Roll by is the first in an exciting, thought provoking new series. The time frame is at the very end of WW1. The setting mostly takes place in a small Arkansas community. Gil and Annemarie had been close childhood friends, high school Sweethearts, and engaged couple before the war. However, in the past year, Gil"s letters had become a little less warm. Annemarie worried he perhaps didn't care for her in the same way. Gil was severely injured and was being sent home. A chaplain, Samuel, and Gil became very close on the ship and then the train home. Although the chaplain wasn't injured, he suffered spiritually and emotionally from the horrors he experienced on "the front lines". Sam decided Gil's home town sounded perfect for him to heal within and was able to be transferred to the small Veteran's hospital there. Against Sam's pleadings,Gil had determined, since he wasn't "a whole man" anymore, he would drive Annamarie away - he couldn't stand to feel her pity. When the two men arrived at the train station, Gil greeted his family warmly but totally ignored his anxiously awaiting fiance'. The ambulance was awaiting transport of the men and other soldiers who were being located in this hospital. Most still suffered Post Traumatic War Syndrome. Between the hurt Annemarie was feeling, and Gil's mother pushing her to plan the wedding, she escaped, often, the pottery factory - where she worked for her father- into the refuge of her private workshop where she was creating delicate, beautiful pottery. At the hospital, Gil refused to allow Annamarie to visit, although she persevered each day to try to visit him. A young nurse, Mary, developed strong feelings for Gil although he did not return them. This is a bittersweet story of how so many lives are affected by war - not only those who serve. It is a story of dismemberment suffered by many who are called on to fight against the enemy. It brings to light, that Post Traumatic War Syndrome is definitely not new, just better understood. Some Key points: Distress, physical disability, drug addition, women's independence, love, loyalty, pain, betrayal, friendship, and family support. The end of the story causes the reader to "beg for more". It is very "clean" reading, fit for YA/Adults. It was a little repetitive at times still deserving of almost five stars but since there is no 1/2 stars allowed here I will have to stick with four stars. I was sent this as an Advanced Reader by a publisher to read and give an honest review, of which I have given.
Set in Hot Springs, Arkansas, Lt. Gilbert Ballard dreads going home. His fiancé deserves to marry someone who has not been injured. Angry with his disability, Gilbert begs his friend, Sam, to take care of Annemarie. Although tempted by her beauty, Sam refuses, knowing one day Gilbert will heal mentally and learn to deal with his physical disability.
Annemarie loves Gilbert with all her heart. She begs to see him in the hospital, but he refuses to see her for weeks. Determined to let him know she still loves him, Annemarie talks Sam into helping her visit Gilbert. Her disappointment turns to hurt when Gilbert breaks off their engagement.
As chaplain for the suffering soldiers, Sam complies with Gilbert's wishes by insuring Annemarie has what she needs. Spending time with someone as kind and lovely as Annemarie, though, becomes difficult. He admits he is attracted to her.
The affects of war toy with Gilbert's healing, with Sam's battle scars chiseling away at his faith in God, and with Annemarie's desires to be faithful to what God wants her to do.
Myra Johnson's story draws us back to the days after World War I, but the compassionate and heart riveting truths woven in the words are applicable today. Walk the streets of Hot Springs with those who are learning to survive and adapt to civilian life.
What I especially appreciated about Myra's book is her choice to paint the picture as it really is with word choices that help us understand the trauma without writing a horror story. I wanted to feel the issues and yet turn pages. Myra did this.
I also especially appreciated her strength to give the reader the ending we knew should be written, yet thought wouldn't be--as opposed to the initial predictable one.
You'll view Veterans Day with a new mind and heart after reading When the Clouds Roll By
It’s November 1918, and Annemarie Kendall works for her father as the bookkeeper at his pottery works in Hot Springs, Arkansas, while she waits for the war to end and her fiancé, Gilbert Ballard, to come home. She keeps herself busy designing beautiful one-off pieces of pottery—something she knows she won’t be able to do when she marries.
But when the war ends and Gilbert returns to Hot Springs with his friend, Army Chaplain Samuel Vickery, Gilbert isn’t the man Annemarie once knew. He’s suffering shellshock, recovering from losing a leg, and will barely speak to her. Annemarie is left to find out about his progress from Samuel, who is becoming a good friend. But it’s not just Gilbert who is carrying scars from the war. Samuel is as well, only his wounds are less obvious.
When the Clouds Roll By is Myra Johnson’s first full-length romance novel, and I think she’s done a great job. It’s not a typical romance with an ending that’s obvious from the first page, and I liked that unpredictability. There were times when I got frustrated with Gilbert for doing stupid things, but at the same time I realised that was how he would behave.
It was still definitely a romance, with two strong male leads vying for Annemarie’s attention. But it was something more as well, with strong subplots around recovering from shellshock, and the use and abuse of prescription medicines. When the Clouds Roll By is the first book in the Till We Meet Again series, and I’m certainly keen to return to Hot Springs, because there are a few minor characters I’d like to see more of. Recommended.

This is the first book I've read by you. As I was reading this book, I kept comparing things to how they are now. For all our advances, not much has changed. They called it shell shock back in WWI but now we call it PTSD. Prosthetic's have changed dramatically. This is about love & war and how it changes everyone. Gilbert who feels he has to be whole in order to marry Annemarie, becomes addicted to morphine to ease the pain. Samuel, the chaplain is spiritually damaged. He looks fine on the outside but on the inside he is reaching the breaking point. Annemarie is hurt by Gilbert. She wants to help him but he breaks the engagement & pushes her away. She goes to the one place that gives her comfort, her pottery. As Samuel & Annemarie get closer, Gilbert is healing physically. He now decides that he wants her back. The plan backfires. Samuel ends up prone on the floor in a fetal position trying to deal with all the death that has come back to haunt him. Dr Russ who knows both men, is there to help Samuel. Annemarie is angry at Gilbert & so is Mary. Mary knows she was used to hurt Sam so that Annemarie will choose him. In the next few days he goes to Mary to beg her forgiveness & to give him a second chance. He realizes she was right but she is the only one that truly get & comforts him. Next is Annemarie. She gives him a hard time for what he did to Samuel. When she didn't know where Sam was at, he figured it out. He had to make peace with Samuel & he did. When Samuel got back to Hot Springs, AR he asked her to marry him.
War tests your faith. You were taught, Thou shall not kill. Yet in war it is kill or be killed. In the end, it will be your faith that brings you through.
Myra Johnson’s When the Clouds Roll By is the story of Annemarie Kendall, a talented young potter during World War I. She is thrilled when her finance, Gilbert, is finally able to come home. Despite his having been wounded, she is ready to start their life together. Gilbert is suffering from debilitating headaches, depression and is addicted to morphine. Army Chaplain Samuel Vickary befriends Gilbert and accompanies him home to Hot Springs, Arkansas. He has his own war-inspired issues to deal with, causing him to doubt his faith. As Gilbert pushes Annemarie away, she is drawn to Samuel, as is he to her. Annemarie is torn between the two men.
I loved this book! I read it in one sitting. It was incredibly well written. Ms. Johnson sure knows her stuff. She must have done tons of research into WWI, the world of potters, clay and glazes, as well as medical procedures and practices of the time. They all seemed spot on.
Her characters seemed to grow throughout the book driven by a great storyline. I was drawn to Annemarie and Samuel from the minute I met them. Gilbert made me want to shake him, all the while having some sympathy for him due to what he had gone through during the war.
Characters, attention to detail and a great story make this book easy to recommend to everyone.
I received When the Clouds Roll By by Myra Johnson compliments of Abingdon Press for my honest review. I received no monetary compensation for a favorable review.
Series -Till We Meet Again book #1 "When the Clouds Roll By" by Myra Johnson
Annemarie and Gilbert were childhood friends and everyone just knew they were destined to marry and live happy ever after but..sometimes this is not the case and when Gilbert came home from the war minus a leg and with other things messing up his mind of the wartimes, He felt less a man and broke off his engagement with Annemarie. She was heartbroken but felt he needed time which she would give him. Sam had been in war too and met Gilbert coming home on the ship, Sam is a clergy with the army who has lost his faith yet he keeps on helping others thinking this will help him find his again. He too has war memories that eat at his soul. Sam and Annemarie become friends while she works at her pottery and he with the men at the hospital where Gilbert is. This is a must read for folks that like to feel the emotions that are running throughout the story. You will smile some and cry some for these brave men who went to war and of the women waiting at home.
I know I will look forward to books 2&3 following up with these characters that I have come to love.
Will Gilbert and Annmarie find their ways back together or have they lost what was not tended when Gilbert gave up? He depends on the help of a nurse,Mary who has fallen in love with him. Is he using her when he feels he cannot go to Annemarie? many questions that need answered and reading this series will clear them all up.
When the Clouds Roll By was a really good read and I don't think I've ever read a book quite like it! One of the main aspects to this book was what soldiers go through post-war. I couldn't help but feel for both Samuel and Gilbert - though some of the latter's actions in this book frustrated me to no end!
The romance story was nice and towards the end very sweet. While I had my guess of who Annemarie would end up with (if anyone), I never knew for sure until the end. I really liked Annemarie's profession as a potter of beautiful creations - I thought it was neat. ;)
I wish we would have been told a little more about what's to happen in Mary's life, but I'm hoping the next book in this series, Whisper Goodbye, will be about her.
Overall, When the Clouds Roll By was a good read and, for the most part, I really enjoyed it! If you are a fan of historicals, I think you'll also like this book. I recommend it!
*I received this book free for review from Abingdon Press through its early reader program. I was not required to write a positive review, only my honest opinion - which I've done. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.*
When the Clouds Roll By by Myra Johnson gives you an up close look at the toll war takes on the home front, as well as the healing that can come afterwards.
When the story starts off, Annemarie is engaged to another man, Lieutenant Gilbert Ballard, friend of the hero, Chaplain Samuel Vickary. As the story unfolds, things fall apart for Annemarie and Gilbert, and Annemarie slowly finds herself attracted to Samuel. Annemarie and Samuel share meaningful conversations, tender moments, and silents ways of support for one another as the story inches it's way to the end.
It is a gentle story that takes a meaningful look at the struggles war weary soldiers face after returning home from the battlefield. The novel goes through great length to examine some of these hardships, while also being laced with romance. And though it's set after WWI, it certainly as a message that will resonate with today's readers.

A beautiful cover to match a beautiful story. When the Clouds Roll By is the first book in Myra Johnson's new series Till We Meet Again, and it's a great beginning.
Set in Hot Springs, Arkansas, this story gripped me from the start. It centers around the consequences of war---not only as it affects soldiers, but the effect it can have on those waiting for their return.
This is a story well-told through four points of view. I was at least three-quarters of the way through the book and still not sure which man Annemarie would choose. Because of that, I don't want to give too much away. I'll simply say that if you want romance, emotional upheaval, and a satisfying happy-ever-after with characters who play on your heartstrings, this is the novel for you.
My thanks to Myra Johnson and Goodreads First Reads for my copy of When the Clouds Roll By ~ Till We Meet Again #1.
One thing is for sure, going to war changes men. In When the Clouds Roll By after looking forward to the return of her soldier, she finds him changed to the point she does not know him. The story shows the emotions of a woman that loves a man that no longer exists and how her faith helps her, when she meets another soldier with his set of problems too. When the Clouds Roll By is full of emotion and faith for a good story.
Wow, I really enjoyed this book. Annemarie is being pursued by two men, both suffering from shell shock in WW1. She is torn between them for different reasons. You won't be able to guess who she ends up with and for what reasons!
This is a fantastic historical romance with a touch of sadness at what our soldiers must endure. Very well written with an endearing storyline.

Annemarie Kendall is engaged to Gilbert Ballard. Gilbert goes off to war; but is injured and what he has seen and what has happened to him, changed him into a bitter man. Chaplain Samuel Vickary has befriended Gilbert and ends up falling for his ex-fiance Annemarie. As Annemarie and Samuel begin a friendship that turns into love. Can Gilbert face his past and become a more Godly man like Chaplain Samuel. Great faith based romance novel.

Another wonderful book by Myra Johnson. Set in post Great War, Myra paints a vivid picture and her characters leap off the page. Annemarie's beau made it home but he's not the same man she new before the war. He pushes Annemarie away and into his best friend's arms. A sweet story of a love that blossoms in the midst of hurt. A must read!!
This was a good story and easy to connect with characters. I appreciate the christian characters that included the Lord all throughput. The author is very talented. I have one complaint I would like to read the whole series but the rest of them are too high priced.
