Growing up, R.L. Mathewson was a painfully shy bookworm. After high school she attended college, worked as a bellhop, fast food cook, and a museum worker until she decided to take an EMT course. Working as an EMT helped her get over her shyness as well as left her with some fond memories and some rather disturbing ones that from time to time show up in one of her books.
Today, R.L. Mathewson is the single mother of two children that keep her on her toes. She has a bit of a romance novel addiction as well as a major hot chocolate addiction and on a perfect day, she combines the two.
In 2019/2020, R.L. Mathewson will be publishing Devastated, the first Anger Management novel, Tall, Dark & Furious, the 6th installment to the Pyte/Sentinel series, Irresistible, the long anticipated novel for the Neighbor from Hell Series as well as many more books throughout the year, paranormals, contemporaries, and YAs.
Oh my gosh , I sure hope that there is a big part in the book that contains Jill and Logan's story! I just love them, so much chemistry between them, and maybe Jill is Logan's new Elizabeth or better yet his mate! ohhhhh!!! ^_________^ I'm just so freakin' crazy about both of them, especially since the last part of the 3rd book *SPOILER ALERT* Logan kidnap (or I think he kidnapped) Jill (his ANGEL <3) and she was sitting on his freaking LAP!!! geez I'm so jelly, but I still love Jill I think she's so damn perfect for Logan. I really like Logan (You don't say). Okay. Alright I just cant wait for this book.
Can't wait for this one! Love the series...I wonder if this one is supposed to be about christofer and cloe (there was a teaser of these two at the end of Book 2 or 3, I can't remember which) I know R.L. has taken a break due to medical issues and I selfishly wish her a speedy recovery so I can get my book! Love ya R.L.!
UPDATE 11-4-14
Eeep! This one kind of disappointed me and I HATE saying that because I truly do love R.L.'s work, but this one didn't cut the mustard. While the storyline was great, the delivery wasn't up to what I expected. I had a hard time with the lead heroine Cloe, she was just a bit too wishy washy and overly stubborn for me and at times I felt like I was reading a book from her Neighbor from Hell series with the overuse of the word "Bastard". I did enjoy reading about all the other characters and I am excited to see where the series goes, so I will definitely be continuing with it. This one just didn't work for me. Sorry! :-(
The following ratings are out of 5: Romance: 💙🖤💜❤️💖 Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Story/Plot: 📕📗📙📘📔 World building: 🌏🌍🌎🌍🌎 Character development: 😠😘🤓😃🥰 Narration: 🎙🎙🎙🎙 Narration Type: Solo Narration
The Hero:Cristofer - (1940’s Germany) - when he was a sixteen-year-old, he was stuck in the body of a ten-year-old boy and was considered a freak in his town. It was a humiliating existence, and he knew he would never be a man, always stuck in the body of a child. He grew up in Germany and knew it was a matter of time before Hitler and his Nazi’s arrived at their door. He promised his father he would always watch over his sister.
(Present day, Massachusettes) – the locals don’t like him and want him to leave town. When a new woman sits next to him in the line for the pharmacy, he can’t get her out of his mind. Her blood smelled so good, and he wanted to feed on her. He knew he could drain her, and his sister Marta would never know. But when he heard she is staying in town, he didn’t quite know what to do. So, he went home and drained two bags of blood which didn’t taste nearly as good.
The heroine:Cloe - She was a live in caregiver and was new in town and wasn’t used to the small-town politics. The locals didn’t seem to like her much and were too interested in her business. She then showed up for her new job with the elderly Mrs. Peterson. She is told never to intrude on Mrs. Peterson’s brothers' privacy (the barn where he keeps his artwork, and the basement where his room is).
The Story: Cloe was surprised to find out that Mrs. Peterson’s brother was none other than the sexy blonde guy who sat next to her in the line at the pharmacy. She expected the old lady’s brother to be about 90 years old. They had a very acrimonious relationship from the start though they were both attracted to each other.
I liked this storyline, since Cristofer was living his own life separate from other Pyte’s and I liked his love for his sister Marta and how he tried to take care of her despite not liking people, not knowing how to cook, etc… He was so cute when he tried to do things like make a sandwich. There were also side storylines about the Sentinals looking for Pyte’s in order to keep them away from Vampire Masters who might want to use them in breeding programs. Another side storyline was about the fact that Cloe has a stalker, a shifter who marked her.
This is told in dual points of view via solo narration and was narrated by Celestine Wolf. She has a soft, feminine voice which is very pleasant. I do like dual or duet narration better, but for solo narration, this is all right. Celestine does a great job at using different voices and different accents for different characters. There were a lot of great characters in this book, including the characters from the first 3 books.
This book turned out better than I expected, even though my expectations were low cause of Without Regret which is the book two of this series. I didn't read book three just jumped to book four, classic me.
This book is more like Madison and Ephraim's book, in a good way. Christofer the pyte is so cool, he is selfless and put his life on hold for his human sister, now that is love.
Cloe the love interest is not as pushy as Izzy but badass, has a terrible past that will blow your mind. But as expected love conquers us.
The book is written in third person multiple POV of Cloe, Christofer, Ephraim, Madison, Izzy etc, basically every character has a POV, including the villian, am not sure how I feel about that yet. But the book is easy to understand.
The story and romance is great, the plot is 3 out of 5 for me.
**re-posting, since this review was erased** The wait was well worth it in the end. Since my first R.L.Mathewson book I have been hooked. This series and all of her books are ones I keep an eye on and I follow and find any information I can get on Ms. Mathewson and when I heard about this one I couldn't have been more excited. It's been some time since I read book one, two, and three so I decided a re-read was in order so that I was up to date and never felt lost. I have to say that I enjoyed the first three books as much if not more as the first time I read them. Finishing book three I dug right in to this one.
Christofer takes care of his sister after he promised his father years ago to do just that. The town he and his sister live in make it very obvious that they want nothing to do with him and he couldn't care less. When Christofer see's Cloe and she does something none but his sister has done in years, talk to him. Christofer is floored then he contemplates taking her blood something he promised his sister he would never do till he finds out Cloe is a new citizen of his town.
Cloe never stays one place too long, taking care of Marta is perfect and hearing all about what her brother neglects to do Cloe is surprised that Marta expects her brother to take care of so much. With Marta being the age she is Cloe knows her brother has to be pushing ninety. Then she see's him and it's none other than Christofer. Now she is shocked that he could have been the sweet funny guy who as it turns out isn't so sweet to his elderly sister.
The more time Cloe spends with Marta and Christofer the more she realizes that Christofer isn't uncaring and loves his sister very much and her first impression of him was very correct. The more time that both Christofer and Cloe spend together the more they are drawn to each other and Christofer finds himself more drawn to Cloe's blood than anyone ever. When the unthinkable happens and Christofer can no longer deny his craving Christofer and Cloe's lives will never be the same.
When Ephraim, Chris, Caine, Danni, and Kane except the job of finding Pytes their new job bring them to Christofer's home. Taking them to keep them safe turns all of their worlds upside down and brings an old threat from Cloe's past that she didn't even know was real back to claim what is his no matter who pays the price.
I really, really like this book, both Christofer and Cloe are new characters in this series which surprised me but it ended up being a nice surprise. Christofer was a great hero that I quickly fell on love with he was strong, possessive, caring and willing to do what he had to for those he loved. Cloe was a great heroine who was smart, and strong and kind. We again get everyone from the first three books with the exception of some smaller characters, much is resolved from previous books, and much is left open for future books. We are given a glimpse into book five(which I can't wait for) and left waiting (impatiently) for Kane, and Joshua's stories.
This book is longer but I enjoyed every minute of it. Ms. Mathewson's writing style sucks you in and makes you never want to leave the world she created. There is one aspect that I hope changes **mild spoiler** Cloe and Christofer leave to travel and I really hope they become a part of the "family" like all the previous charters. I would hate to not have more of them in future books. I love how even after the characters stories end Ms. Mathewson finds ways to keep the characters very involved in future books without over shadowing the main characters **end spoilers**. I can't wait for the next book this is one series that I can never get enough of. In a genre over saturated with mediocre R.L. Mathewson always bring amazing leaving me wanting more.
I think this one is my favorite so far (even more than the first book) because of how the story came together. Of course there was much that I felt was missing:
- One important was that by now we all know that Pytes up until they turn 16 years old look smaller, but then they fall asleep and sleep for a month and wake up looking like a huge 25 year old muscular man. There was no mention of that happening to Christofer when he was captured by the Nazi, or it wasn't mentioned that they were surprised that this happened. - Shouldn't he be able to smell cancer on his sister? - Was his mother pregnant with him before he met his father? Or did she cheat on his father with his vampire biological father? - Who took care of Marta's funeral arrangements? There was a mention that he hoped she would be returned and buried in the family plot in Germany. Does he still have land there? - What ended up happening to Aiden's beta? the rest of his pack?
I'm sure there's more questions I had while I was reading the book, but for now those were the only ones I had. I realize that Jill, her grandmother and Joshua aren't in the book and noticed there are placeholders for #6 (Kale's story) and #7 (Jill's story) and hopefully #8 will be Joshua's story. I know Ms. Mathewson is focused on the NFH series, but I hope she gets back to the Pyte/Sentinel series soon.

My favourite book of the series, and one heck of a story
There are three things that stand out for me in Tall, Silent & Lethal. 1. This one really can't be read as a stand alone, it involves too many characters and plot strands from previous books, 2. It's a BIG book - showing as around 9 hours of reading time on my kindle. I think Christofer and Cloe could have had a duet or trilogy of their own within the series. 3. I absolutely loved this instalment and can't wait to read more from this world.
Christofer is a fairly 'young' pyte, having reached immortality during the second world war. Cloe is the live-in nurse, hired by Christofer's sister to look after her. The first section of the book is more akin to a contemporary romance, filled with the humour, banter and heat that this author does so well. We get the time to learn about Cloe and Christofer, to get a grasp of their true character and to laugh at their little battles of will. Not to mention Christofer's attempt at making a sandwich for Cloe - that's a mental image that will stay with me for a while!
There is a turning point in the book. where the paranormal element really kicks in and we get a fast paced, action-packed story. A story that has plenty of twists, turns and unexpected surprises along the way. Whilst some of the storyline was guessable, it was like seeing a vague outline of the shape of things to come. The subtle shading and myriad colours that turned the outline into a picture were not so easily predicted.
We get to spend more time, at Williams Mansion, alongside characters met in previous books. Not only do we get to catch up on what is happening in their lives but we get resolutions to some outstanding problems too. I've still got one more book to read in the series but also saw the author mention that she is planning on writing at least one more next year. I'm really hoping she does as I adore this world that she has created.
I want to start off by asking... Has anyone else noticed that the female MCs of this series are pretty "judgey" when given immortality?
Ok, so I loved Christofer. His past brings to mind what happened with Wolverine from X-Men. The fact that his sister experienced it right along with him makes me sick. But I enjoyed seeing how much he loved her and the lengths he went to for her to have a somewhat normal life.
Cloe was a trip. Her inner monologues were hilarious. So we're Christofer's. What she endured at the age of 14 was atrocious and I love how Aiden meets his end. He was truly delusional but luckily the Williamses stuck by their sides. I can't get enough of those Williamses.
I cannot forget to mention how happy I am that Caine and Danni are able to live free!!
Now Kale? He unexpectedly warmed my heart in this book. And it was unexpected not only because of his unorthodox ways of doing good, but in the fact that he wanted to do something truly good in the first place. The growth of his character amazed me and in the end, I love his scary ass! One part of the book sums up how great he turned out to be:
“Kale didn’t say anything, just continued to hold CJ in his arms. He didn’t bother telling them that this was anything but a job to him, that after he saw what that piece of shit had done to Cloe that he’d decided to give her the one thing that he’d swore he’d never give to another woman.
His protection.
For the rest of his life, Cloe and her children would be his to protect and watch over. Her children, God help him, would make it to their immortality. As much as it pained him to protect more Pytes, he didn’t have a choice. He couldn’t protect the mother and not the children, couldn’t let Cloe experience the pain of losing a child. As far as the rest of the shifter population was concerned, Cloe belonged to him.”
Is that not incredible????
I still don't know what has happened to Joshua. I thought he may have been one of the many shifters mentioned in the book but unfortunately he wasn't. Maybe he's a lone wolf like Kale. I would like to know more about him. And the ending seems kind of cliffy but I don't see any more books for this series. What is going on with Jill and Logan?! I need answers!!
I love that Christofer and Cloe found love with each other. I feel so bad that the H/h been through hell as a child. I can't wait for the next book.
“That’s fine with me. I never turn down a cute chauffer,” she said teasingly as she climbed in the backseat, leaving him stunned.”
“He rolled his eyes as he climbed in the driver’s seat and adjusted it and then readjusted it. Damn, she was a short little thing. Of course he liked that. He liked that she looked small and made him want to wrap his arms around her and-
“Comfy?” she asked wryly from the backseat.
-strangle her.”
“Or, maybe this is the part of the story where I confess that I am head over heels in love with you and can’t imagine living a single day of the rest of my life without you,” he confessed, all signs of humor gone from his tone as he took her by surprise, sent her heart skipping and her brain turned to mush, which was probably how she missed the fact that the trail that she was following veered off to the right of a steep incline.”
“To always guard my heart,” he said as he leaned down and kissed her. “And that’s you.”
This is the 4th book in the series. I suggest you read them in order.
The first quarter of the book already includes characters from the previous 3 books and if you didn't know the story of each character... you will get lost, confused, and even question why each character acts like a jerk or otherwise. I thought it might be the last but alas! its not. The 5th book is about Jill and she was abducted.
This book is about Christofer and Cloe. Like most of Pyte mates... they are each others sanctuary. I love how they first met, their love for each other, and how ALPHA he can get when somebody lays a hand on her. Christopher grew up only knowing he is a freak with abilities. But when he met the group, he learned information on what he truly is...... a very powerful Pyte, greater than Ephraim or Cain. Cloe was "claimed" by a werewolf when she was 14, a part of her past that destroyed her. Together they find answers, fall in love, fight enemies and learn to accept help when needed. Its a story I devoured in 2 days... family first, hot alpha males second :)
It also continues the story of Ephraim and Madison, Chris and Izzy, Cain and Danni..... I actually fell for Kale Quinn. I thought for sure he will be book #5, I guess we all have to wait a little longer for that. Its a different side of Kale, more mature and caring towards Cloe which intrigued me why...
There has been a mention of Joshua, but it was not enough to speculate into it, maybe he needs more growing up and finding what he really is. Josh was here too, still untransformed.
Pyte/Sentinel series is one that keeps your heart beat, makes you smile, feel the yearn to belong to someone and be part of a big family. I love that the story continues throughout the characters and not just a cameo of some sort. R.L. Mathewson's writing draws you to be part of the character's life, I felt I was there with them.
Why pay money for garbage narration when you can be part of an adventure? Not to forget how swoon worthy these men are :)
After a long and impatient wait, I was sooo happy to get my hand on a new Pyte book. And I was absolutely NOT disappointed!!!
For once, we got a Pyte in the wild, not knowing who and what he really is, neither what he is truly capable of. Add to the situation the irresistible Cloe with her troubled and listeriosis past and quick wit, you got a quite explosive situation full of laughter but also trouble. It doesn't talked long for the rest of the world to notice them and I enjoying being reunited with Ephraim, Maddison, Caine, Danni and all the rest. Kale took a surprisingly important role head on and you will find yourself warming up to him despite his cold and uncaring exterior. Let's not forget that for once, we have a man who can literally kick everyone's ass but not act crazily arrogant like the rest of them. That I think made Cristofer my favorite male character in the serie!!! Also the fact that he tries to act sweet but scare Cloe out of her mind haha. That was just so sweet and hilarious!!!
This book was another huge success. The only thing was that I was kind of disappointed not reading about Jill and her situation but given the ending of the book, I hope this will come next, maybe Joshua too? Please :)
I don’t have a lot to say for once. It was a good read with a few holes.
SPOILERS
The world building behind what Christopher (listening to audiobook) was is missing. If his father is a demon, why does he have fangs and need blood?Other demons in previous books were all different and not vampire like. This wasn’t at all explained well.
Why did the demon blood effect him so differently? Again missing world building.
Why are all werewolves against Pytes? Kale was and it’s never explained why. It’s alluded that maybe Pytes had wiped out a pack before. If so, why aren’t werewolves more afraid of Pytes. They don’t seem so. Again, things happen without consideration to world building.
Anyway, it’s good enough to continue. I’m no longer excitable over the cliffies as they are ignored. Like Joshua and now Jill. The next book isn’t even about Jill.
I continue because it’s not terrible and it’s “free” in the romance package (audios le escape).
Christofer doesn't really have much to live for, even though he seems to have eternal life, his sister is growing older and when she gone he will have nobody left to card for. That is, until Cloe, his sister's caregiver bounds into his life. Cloe aggravates, annoys and arouses him all at once and all he wants to do is taste her delicious smelling blood. All the more reason to get her to leave, as he knows once he starts he won't be able to stop and the last thing he wants to do is hurt her. However, with a nighmare from Cloe's past chasing her and Sentinels looking for Chris to try and protect him, they must stick together to stay alive.
I know it is never a good sign when at the end of the book I am relieved that I have managed to finish it. And that is how I felt when I reached the last page of Tall, Silent & Lethal. Utter relief that I was finally done. It wasn't that the book was unreadable and it did manage to make me smile a few times; however, I thought it was over long without enough content to keep it interesting, what might have been s fast paced, funny, sexy read turned cumbersome and a bit boring.
The book did have Mathewson's trademark sarcastic humour, which I did enjoy and although I like the idea behind the series, there isn't enough plot in this to keep the book going at more than a snail's pace, or enough that anything outside what the main couple is doing is very interesting. The couple themselves, Cloe and Chris were good together, they certainly had great sexual chemistry and the banter between them was hilarious. But I do feel like each couple in this series is essentially the same, which is part of the reason I found this book hard to get through, I felt like I had read it before.
Unfortunately Tall, Silent & Lethal didn't meet my expectations and isn't something I would recommend or reread, if you want to read something from R.L. Mathweson, I highly recommend you start her Neighbour From Hell series instead.
4.5 STARSAs always, like every other book of R.L. Mathewson I loved it. As always it was funny, loved the semantics of Chris, Izzy and Kane and all the others'..
Tall, Silent, and Lethal. I don't know about tall but the other two fits very well Christopher. Cause he is: The one and only who can pin down Kane! The one who can be in control even in bloodlust! And for silent you will get it when you read it.
What else.. He looks after her sister, even thought looking after her means him staying with her in a town where he isn't welcomed, is treated like a freak, being alone..
Oh, he draws paints like a boss etc, not so important right, a normal man, right?! Who I am kidding?! A man who is looking soo good that everybody stares at him, someone who has a golden heart, is artistic & possessive? Pleaseee, I beg you,the divine person I don't care whomever you are, send one over here pleaseee! Why can't I have one like him (I don't need a supernatural one, just someone like him..)? Why can't I have the perfect body like they do when transformed xP? Whyy there's pregnant womens everywhere? Why and whyyy? That starts to get old.. In these books the principal characters are like baby factory, in every single book they make unprotected sex and guess what happens? Suprise: Pregnancy, a baby!
Triggers: Cheating: Love triangle: Sex with om/ow:
HEA:
My review:
I really enjoyed this story. I love that this is a "safe" PNR series. And also, as much as I loved the multiple POVs and getting our previous couple's sweet little scenes, I felt like it was overwhelming and did take a little bit away from the romance of the couple introduced in this story. I have to say that's really why I had to give it 4 instead of 5 stars. I loved this hero. He was alpha and awesome and NOT A MAN WHORE. Such a relief! This was a slow build to a relationship, but it was understandable and I would have been okay with it if not for the other POVs thrown in the middle of that. I understand why it was done because we needed a few key pieces for the story to flow, but still LOL. I think that's why I felt the story dragged a little in the middle. I am extremely happy that I picked this book up and I would most certainly recommend this book to those of you who have read and loved the other three books in this series. I am still anxious to have some of my questions answered regarding the plot! Is Danni healed for good? Is that vamp bastard treating Jill okay??? I really hope he falls in love with her and there are no scenes with other women in their book :) And where is that little asshole that broke Izzy's hip?!?!?! What the hell is going on with him?! So many questions LOL!!!
It's been too long since I read a book by this author and I'd forgotten just how funny her books are, I read the reviews before starting this and I found quite a few which were very mixed, a lot didn't particularly like Cloe so I'll admit I was a bit apprehensive at first, I also wasn't thrilled that the main two characters were new I wanted to know what's was going on with Joshua, Jill and if I'm being honest I wanted Kale to get his book, I just love Kale. I started slowly deciding that if I didn't like it I'd just quit and read something else but I needn't have worried I was soon chuckling away and right back in the swing of things. I loved Christofer, what he's been through is unimaginable and he's just so cute with his 'you're fired' and his sandwiches, I just wanted to give him a big hug. Cloe, I can see what people mean, I loved her at the beginning she was confident and funny then she understandably struggles a bit and while she's not my favourite female character I didn't mind her that much. I didn't actually like Izzy that much at first and now I find her hilarious mind you that's helped by Kale because I just love him and he loves her. This is an entertaining read, it's funny with great characters and I love it, I do have to mention however that I didn't really like the ending I'm not a fan of cliffhangers or things being thrown in at the last minute to get you hooked and ready for the next book, I was already ready for the next book as are I would imagine are most people who've read this series.
OMG love this book so much!! R.L. Mathewson you are an amazing writer. Can't wait for the next book in these series! I hope Kale will get his own story, I am curious if the bastard will able falling in love with someone.
I am having a hard time with this :(! I have read everything by this author, and normally I love her writing. But reading this book I cant tell you how many times I had to stop before I threw my kindle across the room. The story line was really good, I loved the scenes we got from her previous characters in this series. What I didn't like was the fact that the 2 main characters reminded me WAY to much of some of her other main characters, like a lot of the same thoughts and or actions. The use of the word Bastard while great was used a couple to many times and at times I felt like I was reading about 16 year old's instead of adults. Also Cloe's stubborn ness....holy shit it was just to much sometimes, these where the scenes I truly felt like I was reading about teens and not adults. And I could be totally wrong, but can you truly show me a man that would put up with so much stubborn ness, where it turns into child like behavior? Also I felt like there was WAY to much internal dialogue, and a lot of that was teen like thinking, even from Christofer. I really hate feeling disappointed about this book because I was one of those waiting very impatiently for it. And I dont know maybe I was having an "everything irritates me day" but truly a lot of this book irritated me. Again good story line, and yes I will probably buy any other book she puts out, cause that's how I roll I love punishing myself :)
I absolutely loved this book! Ms Mathewson just cannot do wrong in my eyes..
What I loved most about this book was that it was two new characters in the series that were refreshing as well as an infusion of the old characters that we all love..
Christopher... oh Christopher.... you Alpha-Male-GOD!
I Loved this man from the first line I read of him.... and just wanted to lick him all over just as Cloe wanted toooo....
And who can fault a man who loves going down on his woman?!!! Seriously???!!!
The story was absolutely awesome and the couples fights on their path to seriously HAAAWWWTTT sex was to die for.. I can't believe the man's mouth?!! HOT STUFF
I cannot say anymore about this book other than it was as brilliant as I expected from R.L. Mathewson. Hot Paranormal Romance with people fighting over food and some hot Alpha-males! The Perfect formula!
I cannot wait for this book!!!! I LOVE JILL AN LOGAN and I hope this is about them, and I really want to know about Joshua cause I'm so sad that he just ran off like that! I really want things to work out for him!
