Kids everywhere dread the nightly call to go to bed. But not Livi! Her imagination takes her on a journey full of daring obstacles and exciting adventures on her way to bed. She pilots a spaceship, walks a tightrope, and climbs a mountain, all while her Mom waits with her covers turned down and bed ready. With stalling techniques as creative as this, it's a wonder she ever makes it to bed! Author Sarah Maizes and illustrative veteran, Michael Paraskevas, once again create a funny, fresh book that will be a must for every parent who wants to foster creativity while fulfilling the every day necessities.

A delightful picture book about the adventures Livi has on her way to bed! What parent has not heard or experienced, "I am not ready to go to bed. Bed is for tired people. I still have energy!" Livi becomes an astronaut, a magician, a dentist, an acrobat and many other exciting people as a mostly unseen mom orchestrates the progress to move Livi along on her adventure. Will Livi EVER make it to her bed? This will be a fun read-aloud for the preschool through 2nd grade crowd! I received this book as an ARC at TLA.
I really liked this one! It would be a fun read-aloud at preschool or schoolage storytime. I'd have the librarian read aloud the story and give a 2nd copy to another grownup and have them read the mom's part from a different part of the room (yell it like you're a parent calling from the other room).
Genre: Picture Book, Fiction Grade Level: Early Primary, PreK-1 What a beautiful book! I love the illustrations! They are so bright and colorful! The words are in a large, playful font that mimics the story. As a mother of 5, the story rings true! It was always hard to get children to bed and get them up in the morning for school! They always needed something or needed to play just a little longer! Sarah Maizes has done a great job creating a heartwarming story about bedtime! Great book to read to the little ones and talk about using their imagination.
Miss 3 and I like to explore different books and authors at the library, sometimes around particular topics or themes. We try to get different ones out every week or so; it's fun for both of us to have the variety and to look at a mix of new & favourite authors.
This was a random picture book that I chose. A fun going to bed book that I imagine will really resonate with parents of kids who have a million imaginative adventures on their way to bed each night.
This book kinda stressed me out— the mother just kept telling her daughter what to do instead of maybe helping her in an actionable way… the daughter was still little. Also, maybe it was a little too realistic 😬.
This is a very engaging book for children to have read to them. It is also a great book to read before bed also. The illustrations throughout are great and the cover is a good eye catcher.
It's hard on a little person when mom insists that it is time for bed when everyone knows that "bed is for tired people," and Livi is certainly not tired. On her way to bed, she is a circus acrobat, a zoo dentist, a magician, a rocket scientist, and a purple octopus, but she is definitely NOT a tired person. Her imagination can effortlessly take her high into the mountains or out to the middle of the desert where her parched throat begs for a glass of cool water, but a world where Livi is a tired person is absolutely unimaginable. However, she must succumb to her mother's insistence on bed in the end. The only question is, will she emerge in the morning, or will she hibernate all winter long?
It was with much, MUCH trepidation that I read this book to my children. I picked it up at the library because I liked the bright colors and engaging illustration on the cover, but I planned to be sneaky and read it on my own. My kids found it and, clever fiends that they are, brilliantly deduced that this was not a grown up book, and was therefore their rightful bedtime property. The reason I was fearful of sharing was that I have a TERRIBLE time getting my second daughter to go to bed at night. She is a persistent genius at bedtime stall tactics and I did not want to give her any ideas. Since I am so influenced by books myself, I always assume my kids will be the same. I am relieved to report, however, that my daughters all found this book hilarious but have not started filling their trip from the living room to their bedroom with imaginary metamorphoses. It must be because our apartment is so small- the food provided to the imagination decreases exponentially as the distance covered decreases. I'm writing a paper about it and conducting a double blind experiment... maybe in reverse order.
But about the book. My kids loved it. The pictures are great, Livi is a lively and compelling main character, the imaginary leaps (as, for example, from towel on the floor to guinea pig levitating magician) are original but very believable for an energetic 5 year old. Their favorite part is when Livi is finally in bed but still trying to stall and begs for a drink of water because "it is a desert in here!" They say it over and over again, it never stops being funny. I think they really like it because I do the mom voice so well. Great book, good fun. http://childrensbooksonadime.wordpres...
This is a wonderful book for shared read-aloud time since it has plenty of imagination and imagery for the kids, yet also gives parents a feeling of solidarity with other mom and dads as we all realize that we ALL have little ones who - at times - simply....don't....want....to go....to bed.
The quirky, creative main character in this book is a little girl named Livi. Who thinks up every excuse in the book for why she's not ready for bed. Among other things, little Livi imagines herself as a tight rope walker, a zoo dentist, a scientist, an octopus and a teacher. At one point, Livi finally gets to bed but realizes she's sooooooooooooo thirsty that she must be in a desert and the only thing that will allow her to survive is a glass of water. Surely we have ALL been through that one before!
The art in this delightful book is bright, big and exciting. Livi's imagination bursts from the page with many delicious details. And the writing has just the right amount of repetition as it flows excellently from page to page. We enjoyed reading this one out loud at bedtime again and again and we laughed with our kids about some of the tricks and performances they go through in an effort to stay up just a bit longer.
"On My Way To Bed" is a great gift for any kid and/or for new parents. But it's probably best for those who have little ones that are old enough to stall at bedtime, so that everyone can appreciate the full effect of the story!
What a great imagination book! The colorful, page-filling illustrations will take you straight into Livi’s imagination and all of the fun things she does (in her mind) before going to bed. A wonderful bedtime story (or daytime story) that will take the reader on an adventure.
"I am not ready to go to bed. Bed is for tired people. I am not a tired person. I still have energy."
Kids will do anything to avoid bedtime. On the way to bed, Livi performs at a circus, becomes a zoo dentist and a great magician and takes Froggolini to the moon in a rocket.
A celebration of child's imagination with fun illustrations. Should be a hit with students.
This would be a great read aloud, especially for an evening storytime, or a bedtime story. Large, bold illustrations punctuate the humor of the story about the girl who won't go to sleep. This is a book everyone can relate to--adults and children alike.
Livi has a huge imagination as she tries to postpone her bedtime. Bright, bold full page illustrations have different fonts for mother and daughter as they battle the bedtime blues. Fun surprise ending.
This was a great childrens picture book that reminded me of trying to get my own kids to bed at night. This story told through the eyes of Livi, tells of her adventures as she is called to bed. A wonderful little read which brought a smile to my face as I read it.
More silly fun as Livi and her mom battle bedtime this time around. Livi's imagination never fails to impress and kids and parents alike will shake their heads with familiarity.
It's time for bed, Livi! But so many adventures await on that loooong walk to bed. A great story to share with little ones who just can't seem to respond to the call of, "It's time for bed!"
Livi has an overactive imagination and boundless energy. Going to bed might make her miss something so she resists! The illustrations are bold and bright.
