Detroit is a city devoid of many things, but the abnormal is not among them. Within the city many separate worlds exist. To some the world is one of carnal needs, pleasure, and sex. To others the world is one of darkness, devoid of happiness, that leaves desires out of reach. Yet still there are others who can see more in the world. Some who live in the moments when these worlds collide.
Some don’t live at all.
Here in the dark and run down city streets, blood sucking monsters prowl for their next meal. People struggle to make ends meet while finding their comfort at the end of a needle. Here purgatory is served and those within its bounds are forced to peer beyond the mask to see what world others truly belong to.
Everybody needs something. Everyone wants something. Sex, blood, love, life, or souls are the currency exchanged. What are you willing to pay?

First and foremost I am a father and a husband. I work full time as a civilian employed by the US army, and have also been known as a welder, electrician, carpenter, roofer, writer, painter, CNC machinist, and amongst many other things a romantic. I also belong to the eternal fraternal brotherhood of the United States Marine Corps, having served 8 years that showed me a much broader perspective of the world at large serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, The war on Terrorism, and the humanitarian effort in Liberia.
I currently live in southern Louisiana with my wife and children, though I grew up in Michigan, graduating high school in Mason MI. I also spent time living in North Carolina, Florida, and California during my time in the United States Marine Corps. I have always dreamed of publishing my work, and seeing it on a bookshelf in a store, however with the huge shift to digital media I finally realized that the dream was in my own hands. I tell my children that they can live their dreams, and I believe in leading by example.
I enjoy writing across several different genres from poetry, to children's stories, to full epic fantasies. Creating new characters for my readers to connect with, new worlds for them to immerse themselves in, and new ideas to wrap their minds around is an amazing if not humbling experience. I hope that all my readers can take something away from each of my books, and enjoy reading them just as much as I have enjoyed putting them in print.
This book was a great read. Unlike most erotica that I read, where there's just sex, this has a story line. A great one at that. Slightly off Derek and Jade live together, probably love each other. They have an unconventional existence together. But one night, they go to a ball, and their lives are changed forever. What now?
A steamy, hot, sexy, paranormal read, that has one of the best cliffhangers I've ever seen. You're left panting, and wanting more. Much more!
Free ebook highlighted on goodreads, I was interested in reading some UF written by a man for a change, although turns out this is a collaboration between 2 authors and the other is female. Jade and Derek live in Detroit, she's a bartender and he's a writer; she receives an invitation to a ball from a mysterious blond who turns out to be a vampire and things go wrong pretty quickly from there. I couldn't stand Derek as a character - pathetic, controlling, self-pitying - it was not clear to me why Jade loved him, although she is damaged by her background. I'm interested enough in where this is going to read the next one but I hope they fix the typos: the past tense of to drag is dragged not drug (twice!), and it's out of sight not site - there are many more examples - you'd think with 2 authors they might notice each other's mistakes...
Beyond the Mask is an entertaining read that features vampires and ghosts and an interesting intersection of the two. In terms of plot, pacing, and sheer entertainment value, this novel gets two thumbs up.
Despite being categorized as paranormal erotica, Beyond the Mask reads more like a supernatural thriller with some slap and tickle thrown in. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but those looking for erotic themes or (per one definition) "the arousal of sexual desire" likely won't find it here.
There are a few grammatical errors, but overall the pace of the story and the quality of the storytelling is enough to overlook these issues.
OK,I really don't like giving 5 stars except for Classic, so I've rounded this up from 4.5. I really like Derik, he is an unusual character. I also like how vampires are incorporated into the story. It is not obviously who is a vampire & who is not, so there is an element of suspense that kept me turning the virtual page.
I just couldn't keep going. It was a struggle to pick up my kindle knowing this story was my current read. I didn't understand Jade becoming a ghost and with Nik being above the law how things would be resolved. Derek was in such a dark place before her death. After... wow. Not a happy story. Maybe it ends well, but I don't have the motivation or desire to find out.
Will write a review later, but for my friends that chose books based on reviews this is a 2.5-3 story and is not erotica, but more of a supernatural suspense story with a tad of erotica.
