The Chariots Slave

Rate this book
After witnessing her mothers grisly death and being sold into slavery by her father, she had little left to hope for. But when purchased by Rome’s most eligible bachelor and sent to work in his chariot training facility, the seeds of hope begin to grow once more. Her relationship with her new Dominus is unpredictable. At times she’s afraid of him, afraid of what he will do to her. Yet there were moments when she was drawn to him, more than she had ever been to another being. When given a chance to save his life, something in her prompts her to do it. She disguises herself in his robes and enters the empire’s most dangerous chariot tournament. To lose the tournament would mean death for them both, and to win... something no girl had done before.

Rather boring story, characters that resembled the emotional and mental maturity of 12 yr olds and a blatantly obvious plot.

The richness of that era was missing and the detail that should have been there wasn't.

The editing needs to be tightened, issues ranged from missed words, to duplicate words, to misuse of there/their/they're. Also the formatting on the kindle was atrocious.

After witnessing her mothers grisly death and being sold into slavery by her father

Sorry, but more like:

After causing her mother's death by accusing her of stealing her violent and alcoholic father's wine when really she was the one who did it, and being sold into slavery by her father

Am I supposed to like the protagonist? Because she doesn't learn from her mistakes, instead endangering the lives of her fellow slavegirls by talking back to their slave drivers.
That's my pet peeve with this story: the characters are unlikeable. They're hollow and boring.

Stylistically, the writing is very simplistic and unrefined. For instance, rather than create an antique setting, the author inserts antiquated words that just sound artificial in conversations (bottles are vessels, Sellah asks to be "rebuked"). Also, there are punctuation mistakes and the author even mispells the male protagonist's name! Is it Thaddeus or Thaddius?
Some plot points just don't make sense. Sellah is beaten so hard she loses consciousness. Her owner dominus passes out on top of her.

Much to his relief his weight crashing on top of her broken form had not stirred her.

Not mentioning the missing comma or the awkwardness of her "broken form", he shouldn't be relieved that she probably has a concussion or even is brain damaged! She doesn't wake up for hours!
Finally, some plot devices are too common, for instance the protagonists standing out because of their beauty. The hero literally has women lining outside his door for sex. In Antique Rome.

Though I would love to give this Canadian author raving reviews, alas I can not.

PROS: quick easy read, great captivating cover and title, some good action scenes. There were some great quotable passages from the lone intellect in the book.

CONS: This book didn't feel complete on many levels. Edited poorly with grammar errors, missing words, poorly formatted for ebook.

While I was reading this book I wanted more. More character description, scene & architectural reference, emotion, more human connection, conflict, perhaps a love scene or a kiss to support the love triangle dilemma. It felt unfinished with many missed opportunities. All in all I completed the book feeling very unsatisfied.

The best part of the book according to me is the chariot races to maintain the unrivalled title of being the best charioteer of Rome. The characters were alright, some of them irritating and some pleasant and stupid. This book lacks depth of emotions. But, the action was well described.

only when someone has so little can they give so much so selflessly.

R. Lynn has done an excellent job portraying a person who has nothing, yet has everything.

Bold heroine, overbearing master, solid romance made for a good quick read with enough twists that kept me interested to the end.
