Slayers #2

Friends and Traitors

Rate this book
The Slayers – teens who have powers to fight dragons—are back by popular demand in this high-octane sequel, now with a new cover package!

Tori is at a White House dinner party when she hears a horrifying sound: dragon eggs hatching. It means in less than a year, the dragons will be mature and dangerous. The Slayers are well-trained, but their group is not yet complete, and Tori is determined to track down Ryker Davis, the mysterious Slayer who has yet to surface.

What Tori doesn’t bargain for, however, is the surprising truth about her powers: she isn’t a Slayer after all, but a Dragon Lord, with a built-in predisposition to protect dragons, not kill them.
How will she overcome this to save the lives of her friends?

Love triangle galore.

So this book is a bit cliché on several aspects, but it’s fun, simple, and I do love the group of characters we see in this book, particularly the new ones who are introduced here.

Willow seems like a secret badass. Ryker seems interesting.

And of course, I have loved Bess since the first book. I honestly have been hoping she would become one of the main characters. She’s hilarious.

The love triangle is obvious and predictable. I probably would have liked this more without it because the book could have been paying more attention to Tori’s life and personal growth, rather than her feelings on boys.

Still, I quite like that Dirk has dual sides, and he is more complex than at first glance.

I obviously like Jesse more, but he and Tori were driving me nuts in this book. #missed you but not your problems.

I am not as interested in this plotline as the 1st book. I think it only started picking up when the group goes find Ryker. I think the concept of this series is awesome, with the group of dragon-slaying kids and camp on how to fight, but I was expecting something… more. More fun times, more emotional times. More everything, really.

Anyway, I am seriously hoping that in the next book, we would see some more serious developments in the characters, plotline, and in the romance (without the love triangle, hopefully). And more teamwork and interactions with the other characters in the dragon-slaying group. 3 stars

Review of the advanced readers copy from giveaway;

Slayers Friends and traitors is the continuation of the slayers story with main character Tori learning she is part of a group of young people that must save the country from the threat of dragons. This book has everything you could hope for in a young adult book: a great villain, an interesting love triangle, a likable main character and secrets that are exposed. This is a book that grabs your attention on the first page and will make you not want to stop reading till you have reached the last, personally I could not stop till I read the whole book.

Well for anyone wondering if they should read the book the answer is a definite yes. Not only has Friends and Traitors stayed true to the characters and stories introduced in the first book but made them bigger and better. In my opinion this book is even better than the first was, the pace is much faster and the story draws you in even more. A lot of the lingering questions that you may have had after the first book ended are answered in this amazing sequel.

The plot is well-developed and very interesting and I look forward to seeing were this series goes next as it is quickly becoming a favorite of mine. I recommend this book not only to anyone that is into fantasy stories and dragons, but to anyone that enjoys young adult books.

Great. Great, great, great. I hate waiting for the next book in a series. HATE IT!!!!!!!! And it seems like this one was a long time coming. I hope so much the next one comes out a little quicker. Fingers crossed.

Love that it's a clean read. Fantasy nowadays seems to be sooooo sexual. I can't pick up a book about fairies anymore without being assaulted by titillating whatnots. So once again another reson I love Janette R. Clean books in the genres we love. We can read fantasy without feeling like we're in a racy D&D flick. Sorry if that was crass. But I mean it. I am so grateful.

Fast-paced. I wish there had been a little more... meat. I don't really know how to describe it, but parts of it just felt one dimensional. Nothing major, but I just came away wanting more. But maybe that's because it's a second book.

How long have I be waiting for this book? It feels like forever. I'm so, so happy it finally made it's way to me. :)

I think I may have enjoyed this book even more than the first. That's saying something good for this book because usually second books in the series are not quite as thrilling as the first. But, not this one. It was just as good, if not better.

There are a couple things that I really love about these books. First, the pacing. The story flows so well and I never felt the need to skim. (Did I just admit that I sometimes skim?! maybe...) There is action, action, action. I love that. The feeling of getting wrapped up altogether in a book is a good feeling.

Another thing I really love about this book is the teamwork. This group of kids have formed a team. They have been taught how to work together for the best interest of the whole group. They all have a role to play, they all feel needed. I just love the whole working together thing.

I enjoyed the DC scenery through the book. I lived there for a couple of years and it brought me back to lots of favorite places with good memories. :) One of the best things for me about this book is that it is clean. This is a book I can recommend to my nieces, my mother or anyone. (hi mom!) No swearing, no sexual situations.

Personal Response
I think that this was a really good book. I like all the action that happened in it. I wonder why Dirk wanted Tori to betray the slayers and join him with helping his father Over Drake. I wish that Tori would have told the other slayers that she was a dragon lord instead of keeping it from them.

Plot Summary
Tori had to leave her family for a day to help the other slayers fight Over Drake.Tori's skills for fighting are becoming as good as Jesse's. Her and Jesse got into a fight and don't want to talk anymore. The slayers found out that Dirk was Over Drake's son. Dirk ran away from the slayers and is helping his father. Over Drake attacked the slayers with his best dragon and the slayers killed it. Dirk is still trying to help the slayers without his father knowing. Tori thinks she might not be able to kill dragons because she is part dragon lord. Ryker joined the slayers and is learning to train with them. Tori and Jesse made up and are in a relationship again.

Recommendations
I recommend this book for people who like action and fighting. I recommend it for people over the age of ten because it has some graphic content that can be inappropriate for a little kid to read.

Guys I am not sure what to say about this one. OMG. This is the best sequel I could ask for. Tori comes back but this time you get to see from multiple perspectives. What happens when the dragon eggs hatch. Tori hears them cracking but doesn't expect anything because the boy who can see what the dragon sees says he doesn't see anything. Figuring out who is the traitor, who to love, and who can help them they set out. Ryker has to be the only hope, only he has to stay until he is 18 because his parents will never let him go. Surprises and romances you got over. This book was just !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Must read. Ages 13 and up for some violent things. Not very bad things but yes there is violence. Must read.

My biggest problem with this book is that the next book is not out yet and I'll have to wait to read on. I like the characters and the action in this series, so I went looking for the author's alter identity in order to read more of her books. So I will have to try one of Jannette Rallison's romance novels!

I didn't like the first half of the book

This is the sequel to Slayers and it has been a long wait for this book (Slayers released in 2011). It was an excellent follow-up to that story. There is a lot of action, some teen drama, and some awesome twists and turns.

Dragon Camp is wrapping up for the summer. All the campers are off to lead their normal teenage lives, that is until Tori hears the dragon eggs hatch. Then Dirk convinces her it is just a trick being played by Overdrake to make her think they hatched. Tori is unsure what to think, but if the eggs are hatched the Slayers have less than a year to train together to defeat them. This makes Tori determined to find the final member of their group, Ryker Davis. Little do they know that Ryker has been training in secret on his own.

I really enjoyed Slayers when it was released in 2011. This book did a great job of continuing the storyline about a bunch of teenagers who find out they have Dragon slaying powers and have to save the world from the evil Overdrake.

Tori has gotten a lot better about using her abilities but she still doesn’t want to be a team captain, she doesn’t feel like she is ready for it yet. Her and Jesse still have a relationship going on, but Jesse is unwilling to bend the rules and pretty much puts things on hold between them.

There is a love triangle going on between Tori, Dirk, and Jesse which started in the first book. Dirk is basically willing to stay in contact with Tori and is her pair as far as Slayer abilities go. So Tori and Dirk get a lot closer in this book. Jesse is unwilling to break the rule about Slayers not contacting each other outside of Dragon Camp, so he is out of a large portion of the story. The romance never takes over the story but is in the background and dealt with in a realistic way.

The story switches mainly between Tori and Dirk’s viewpoints. We get to learn a lot more about Dirk and his family in this book, it makes him a much more sympathetic character to read about. I enjoyed hearing from both points of view.

There are a couple of really massive and fantastic action scenes in this book between the Slayers and Overdrake’s men. The book ends with another fantastic fight between the Slayers and a dragon (just like the first book did).

There also a couple big twists in this book, one of which is disclosed in the backcopy...which is that Tori figures out she is not a Slayer at all but a Dragon Lord. This is something Dirk has suspected for some time.

This book is very aptly named. By the end Tori and her fellow Slayers have been betrayed by one of their own and are struggling to figure out who the traitors are and who are their friends.

I felt like the story didn’t make a ton of progress and I also felt like it was very similar to the story we read in the first book. However I really do enjoy the Slayers and their unique powers. I also love the battles between the Slayers and the Dragons.

Overall this was a great continuation of the series. I think if you liked the first book in the series you will enjoy this one too. The story is a unique blend of dragon fighting, superhero-like powers, and politics. It’s very different from a lot of other YA paranormal books out there. Recommended if you like paranormal YA especially with dragons!

I LOVED IT! It was a great 2nd book of the series.

I love the characters, both good and bad. Tori was one tough girl. She doesn't always believe in herself which makes her vulnerable, and I liked her for it. She was so smart and creative and surprised those who thought she couldn't train fast enough to catch up to the other Slayers' abilities. The scenes that had Tori with Jesse and Tori with Dirk were my favorite! How could she pick between two great and very different guys? I guess I'm fickle because each time she was with Jesse I wanted her to be with him, but then as soon as Dirk started talking I wanted her with him. Dirk has become my favorite whether I want him to end up with Tori or not is yet to be determined. I think I really like Tori with Jesse, but Dirk needs someone awesome too! All the other Slayers are unique and fun to hear about. Bess- hilarious, Rosa- so sweet, Kody- a tough and loyal cowboy, just to name a few.

The story line of this series was so fun and exciting. I love how they seemed like normal teenagers at a summer camp but were really a group of kick-butt dragon slayers. I was interested to see how this book would go with them being away from camp. I was afraid I would get bored with Tori being away from the other Slayers, but I was pleasantly surprised with all the excitement. There were chapters from other characters' POV which kept the story flowing. I loved it!

Slayers: Friends and Traitors was exciting, fun, and romantic! I recommend this book to everyone who loves a good action romantic comedy.

C.J. Hill blew me away with the first book in the Slayers series. Modern dragon slayers and real dragons in our everyday world is just brilliant! Her characters were all real and interesting, and had the coolest abilities. I definitely want to be a Slayer. ;)
I was excited to receive the newest book, Friends and Traitors. Already from the title I knew it would be full of suspense and conflict. I wasn't disappointed.

Tori returns eager to learn more about her Slayer heritage, but time has run out. When dragon eggs start hatching, she and her friends realize their greatest fear is going to become reality. They struggle to come to terms with their dangerous future, while attempting to find the final Slayer, a boy named Ryker. But Tori soon learns things about herself that complicates matters. She has a dual nature to both slay and protect dragons. How can she be both? When she learns that another member of their group shares this trait, loyalties are called into question. Her heart becomes caught in the middle as she struggles with her feelings for the two boys closest to her. Her choice will affect the future of the Slayers, but which side of her will she honor?

I enjoyed this book. Learning more about Slayers and Dragon Lords was awesome! Hill has created a unique history about our own world for her story, and continues to weave in surprising revelations and twists. Jesse and Tori's complicated relationship is as heated as ever. I was a bit disappointed that, yet again, there was a love triangle, but I like how things were resolved. I felt like the heroine actually made a choice and didn't just default to one guy. My heart broke for Dirk and the tough choices he faced. I can't wait to see how things resolve themselves in the next installment.

This sequel to SLAYERS is even more action-packed than the first book and it is packed with emotions too. Tori has spent the summer training to be a dragon slayer and falling in love with Jesse. Now, the end of camp has come and Jesse wants to end the relationship too. Tori is heartbroken and turns to her counterpart Dirk for comforting. She sees Dirk as a friend but Dirk is in love with her too and wants a different relationship. Since Dirk and Jesse have been best friends for years this damages their friendship.

But the Slayers have worse problems than boy-girl problems. The dragons they are training to fight have hatched and will be ready to fight them sooner than they had hoped. Even worse, they have a traitor in their midst who is passing on vital information to the Dragon Lord who wants to eliminate the Slayers who stand in the way of his world domination.

The Slayers are continuing to look for Ryder who was spirited away to hiding by his parents when they learned he was a Slayer. They are determined to keep their child safe and remain neutral in the coming fight. When the Dragon Lord locates them, they learn how unrealistic that expectation is. Ryder has been training in secret and is ready to join the rest of the Slayers.

I liked the way the characters grew in this story. I liked that they had to wrestle with loyalties and make tough decisions. I especially liked that Tori had to deal with the fact that she was part Dragon Lord which made her sympathetic to the dragons.

The end of the book clearly states THE END but I hope there is at least one more book. I want to know if our young heroes can defeat the Dragon Lord and save our American way of life. Fans of action, dragons, and love triangles will enjoy this story.

Even better than the first book!

With new challenges and old foes, Tori and her friends must reach Ryker before Dirk. Filled with even more action, suspense, and dragons, this book will not disappoint!

The desperation for Tori and Dirk to just get together could not be any more real! You can definitely see how the two feel for each other, but their own personal insecurities, family, and friends approval continuously destroy the possibility. I love the internal conflicts between Tori and Dirk. Oh and Jesse too. I love how there are multiple flaws with each of the characters and not just one character will all of the flaws. Although, I’m not a huge fan of love triangles, mainly because they are an overused trope and always leave me disappointed or uninterested. However, I completely okay with this one. Jesse and Dirk are complete opposites, yet share some common traits. And just how they interact and care for Tori really tells you something about their characters.

Besides the wavering love triangle, this book contains an incredible amount of action and suspense. I love books that will get your heart pounding as if you were wanting a movie or going for a job. I’d defiantly see this if it were made into a movie!

I can't wait for the next one!

Lately I’ve been really fascinated by the fantasy world. You know all the vampires, werewolves, demons, and etc. Well this book just hit one of the top of my favorites for the genre.

Slayers: Friends and Traitors is an awesome book that I just couldn’t put down. It held me captive through every single chapter. It was amazingly well written and the timing of the book didn’t seem to drag at all or hurry up the story.

I think my favorite characters in the book have to be Tori and Dirk who are also the main characters. Tori is your average teenage girl, well basically, I should say average teenage rich girl who just happens to be a Slayer. Slayers hunt down and kill dragons.

Dirk pretends to be a Slayer so that he can penetrate the camps security codes and secrets. He then hands everything over to his father who is a Dragon Lord, someone who protects the dragons. Only he wants the dragons so that he can become ruler of the world.

What happens when Dirk and Tori start to have feelings for one another? What will Tori do when she finds she has been betrayed not only by a friend but by someone she cares a bit about than just a friend?

I had to have this book when it came out. I loved the first Slayers and I could not wait to read the second one!
First of it, it stays true to the plot. Kids fighting dragons. It picks up a little bit after where the first left off so the reader isn't trying to guess what happened and why the book jumped a bunch of months. No it's nothing like that.
It kept me guessing. And I can't pick which boy I like more. Dirk or Jesse. They're both fantastic characters and they both have their flaws which is nice. They aren't the perfect boys because hey no one is perfect. I like how this took place in the real world and not in camp. I couldn't put this book down, I just wanted to know what happened next.
Since there will be only one more book after this, I know I'm going to cry because it's such a good series.
And to be completely honest, I would love to see a movie being made out of this series. With a really good director and producer, it could turn out to be really well produced. It's my guilty pleasure to want books to be made into movies just because I love acting and I want the chance to play a character in it! (Hey if percy jackson could get made into a movie, then this could too)

Terrific second book in the series. This is more action packed than the first one as slayers find themselves separated and under attack. You really feel for Dirk even though you just want to beat him about the head and shoulders to wake him up. He is so desperate for his father's approval that he is willing to give up his own happiness with his friends. The teams at Slayer Camp had worked so hard in building trust that Tori and Jesse willingly fed him secrets out of respect and friendship. Through accepting of his role on his father's side, Dirk is still conflicted and finds ways to help the Slayers. The problem is that if his friends die, Dirk will hate himself. If his friends kill his father, Dirk will hate himself. And if the dragons die, Dirk will hate himself. His "rock and a hard place" is a triple threat. What's great is that Tori does understand a bit of what Dirk is going through, although she can't agree with the side he is on. It's also nice to see her commit to the Slayers during her father's presidential run.

So, so good.

I'm pretty sure I have a weakness when it comes to summer camp books because I can never not put them down. When you have a summer camp book about dragon slaying? Written by Janette Rallison??

I.
AM.
SOLD.

I'm usually hesitant about reading sequels because they never live up to the first one but I didn't have to worry about that here because this one picks up where the last left off (more or less).

In this one, Tori is dealing with her conflicting feelings for Dirk versus Jesse. I'm not going to lie. Love triangles totally turn me off. Here's why: the girl never picks the right guy. In this one, Tori and Dirk get much closer in this book, and Jesse continues to talk to Tori outside of camp, which is completely against the rules. I really hope she chooses dirk but I already know she's going to pick Jesse. I can feel it. *sobs*

Anyway, as far as love triangles go,the romance, if you ask me, is not overbearing, and since the story is more about dragons and slaying and whatnot, I will forgive you just this once, Janette.

I've figured it out. It's not the story I don't like It's the MC. It's the reason why I want to finish the books, the storyline is great. The action scenes are great. All the other characters are great. Victoria Hamptom sucks giant, whiney, piney, cowardly, monkey balls

So I didn't call the traitors' actions... it all went down a little differently. Good job Hill, way to keep me guessing!

But Tori, god Tori. All.she whined about was Jesse. I'm at the point where I don't care to see them together or not. Seriously. I'm over them.

The events in this installment were a lot better than the first. I felt like more happened and quicker.

I thank the heavens for the alternating POV because I couldn't live in Tori's head.

Um, that is all. I'll read the last one but I'm not excited about it.

Before Reading:

Ohmygod. So excited. I've been waiting for this book for so long! It has everything that I love in it. Dragons, summer camp, action, horses, powers and romance! Can I ask for anything more?!

This is an ARC and was provided by First Reads on Goodreads.

After Reading:

Be still, my heart. It's melting! Tori and Jesse. Need I say more? Need I say more? No. Add that to butt kicking action against dragons. Just stop. I love, love, love, love this author. I have now made it my life goal to read all her books. Holy shishkabob when is the next book coming out?!

Review advanced readers copy.

I went into this book a bit skeptical because I usually don't like second books in a series. But this book was pretty much a stand alone with a few loose strings that can be tied up in the next book. I liked hanging out with the characters, I was glad the love triangle wasn't too over the top, and I appreciated how CJ Hill seamlessly reminded me of what happened in the first book. I was only disappointed when I finished reading and realized I have to wait a whole other year or so until the next book comes out.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
This book was just as good as the first one! I want to know what happens next! The problems that I had with the first book, I did not have with this one. I love this series, I love how the first chapter of this book paralleled the first chapter of book one. The tie in was fantastically done. I love Dirk's character and his deep indecision about what he is doing. I'm still annoyed by the italics at the beginning but there is less of it in this one.

I don't know why I didn't leave a review the first time I read this ... *shrugs*. But it was just as fun the second time around. I loved the twists and turns this one took. One minute you would think the characters were finally safe, but nope. I also liked that it had a different setting than the first book (which took place at camp), in that it takes place during the school year (not that they spend much time in school...).

Received this book as a giveaway and actually quite enjoyed it. I wasn't expecting too much out of it, and I can say that I'm sure I missed a lot of what was going on as I have never read the first book in the series, but I can say that this felt like a solid second entry.

I definitely enjoyed the concept of the dragon slayers and thought the overall story was fun. It feels like a pretty standard YA series, so if that's what you're into then you should enjoy this book.

I really enjoyed it. It has more action. I both liked Dirk and wanted to smack him. You could really feel his conflict. His struggle is what stuck with me long after I closed the book and that was the scripture about serving two masters and you will either love the one and hate the other. I think this situation is a good example of that.

Once again, I am amazed at Hill's talent for writing. I love the humor she has placed in her characters and the way they persevere through hard trials with positivity. I thoroughly enjoy each adventure they go on--whether it be slaying dragons or flying romantically through the forest. Hill has created beautiful characters who enhance the story and draw you in the moment you start reading.

Ahhh, we finally got to see some more dragons! Also glad we got to see more of Ryker and Willow. Looking forward to even more dragon action in the next book. Will Ryker's little sister, and Dirk's little sister, also become Slayers? Dragon lords? Dragon kabobs? When is the third book coming out?

Really excited to see what happens next. This book was even better than the first, because the familiarity with the characters lets Hill (and the reader) have a bit more fun. I like the moral conflict of whether or not the dragons should be killed, and what side Dirk and even Tori should be on.
