Splashy sunset paints the sky. Shy moon tiptoes, climbs up high . . . Daylight is fading and night is drawing in. It's time for bed. A drowsy child observes the wide world settling down, coming ever closer to home until at last there are good-night hugs and kisses for this little sleepyhead. Richly painted, evocative scenes illuminate the text, imbuing the whole with mystery and a sense of comfort and warmth, and making this a bedtime story to treasure for all time.
This gentle poetic bedtime book has beautiful illustrations that feel like nighttime. The poetic text is mostly calming, but it falls off track/beat in a few places--rhyming "done" and "on" in one stanza and the repetitive chant "Yawn around, yawn around, sleepy time sky (farm, town, etc.)" actually feels a little out of rhythm with the 4-line rhyming stanzas. It's a quiet bedtime story so just like "Goodnight Moon" it doesn't need to tell a story, but instead to simply set a mood--but when it is "off" in a few places with so few words, it feels like a one-and-done book (read only once and move on to other books that beg for re-reading).
My daughter loves this book. We reading multiple times a day. She loves the art and the animals. Sometimes she will hug her favorite pages and kiss the animals. The sentences are simple and flows nicely. I've already remembered the whole book!
A rhyming book that talks about what is happening in various areas of a city and neighborhood as night is falling. It’s not quite as interesting as a story as many other books about bedtime.
I picked Sleepytime Me by Edith Hope Fine and illustrated by Christopher Denise as my pick for the Caldecott Award. I enjoyed the illustrations of this book mostly because of the color saturation. The blues were very dark and rich, which I thought worked well with the story. I also liked the auras that surrounded all of the lights and stars. The illustrations set the mood very well for the book. It made the reader think of a calm, peaceful night making it a great bedtime story. I also thought the shadows and reflections in windows were very thought out and executed greatly. There was also a great deal of detail in the pictures. It was obvious that the illustrations took time due to the amount of trees in some illustrations, and the wallpaper that is seen inside the house. Christopher Denise did not leave anything out of his illustrations for this book, which made them very realistic while still being animations. No detail was spared while illustrating Sleepytime Me and it is very obvious when analyzing each page. Although I really enjoyed the illustrations in this book, one page did not impress me very much. On the page where the mom is tucking the little boy into bed, her face looks rather large and her neck is very slim, so it doesn't look very proportional. Other than that, I absolutely loved the illustrations of this book.
This lyrical journey to bedtime begins at sunset and leads us through the "yawning" vastness of the night sky, then down to earth where farm animal sleepyheads - chickens, kittens, piglets, puppies, ducklings, and bunnies - are coaxed to rest. As "nighttime gathers" the journey takes us to town where workers head home in trains, buses, and cars. And finally, we are home, where a family settles in for the night, including one precious sleepyhead. This is a bedtime story that will, no doubt, be considered a classic - an exquisite blend of soothing poetic language and beautiful illustrations. It is truly a picture book lullaby.
Sleepytime Me by Edith Hope Fine, illustrated by Christopher Denise – Release date: May 27th Perfect rhythm for a bedtime story, wish I had when my son was a baby, would have loved to read it when there were those tough, need a peaceful, beautiful book to read my child to sleep nights… The color choice and beautiful illustrations almost felt like I was watching a movie unveil the simple, happy life of a toddler needing to go to sleep. One of those perfect combinations of author and illustrator.
All over town, it's time for bed. Farm animals are settling down to sleep, workers are heading home under street lamps, and last-minute tidying is being done. And then, finally, it is time for sleep.
This comforting, sweet book is perfect for pre-bed lap reading, especially for toddlers and preschoolers, although some older children may enjoy it as well. Both the lilting text and lovely illustrations work together to lend a sense of warmth and coziness to the simple story, and many tired parents will appreciate the briefness of the text.
SLEEPYTIME ME This book is, in my opinion, the perfect bedtime book (right along with another favorite Sleepyheads). Edith Hope Fine has a gift for spot-on word choice which is essential with books of more sparse text. Her sweet rhyme lulls you through day's end, into night, with the softness and beauty of Christopher Denise's gorgeous artwork.
Do you remember the Sesame Street song "Everybody Sleeps"? That's what this book reminded me of. Whether it's on the farm or in town, bedtime is for everyone. Fluid rhyming text and soft colorful illustrations make this a great read aloud. It's perfect to snuggle in with a little one and end the day.
SLEEPYTIME ME is a quietly enchanting bedtime story. Luminous illustrations highlight the small, wondrous moments in nature, on farms, in towns, and at home as sleep approaches. Readers young and old will be magically delivered to sleep by the rhythmic text and comforting images found within SLEEPYTIME ME.

This book just oozes bedtime comfort. The illustrations are beautifully done, and the story itself is set to a delightful rhythm. This is sure to wind up being a treasured part of a child's own bookshelf.
The illustrations in this book are stunning and magical. Christopher Denise is amazing. A couple of the rhymes seemed a bit forced, but the illustrations made up for anything the text might have been lacking.
Soft, beautiful illustrations and rhyming text as bedtime falls all around, in town, on the farm, at the house. Love the border collie family in the barn! Escellent for a bedtime story.
The illustrations are what really make this for me. Lovely detail and overall compositions. The text is nice and simple. It follows a relaxing pattern that would be perfect for bedtime.
Soothing rhyming text is perfect for bedtime and PJ storytime. Especially like the warm glow coming off the illustrations from lightning bugs in the country to a busy city street.
