Do you like Star Wars, because I sure do. I've liked Star Wars ever since I was 4. So this book was perfect for me. It was interesting to learn how a small town boy became a very successful Hollywood director/producer. He created some well known franchises such as Indiana jones, and Star Wars! Now he lives on Skywalker ranch, as peaceful as it gets!

I usually read the "Who was..." series, but this is the first time I tried one of the "I am..." series.
I don't know that there is a whole lot of difference in the content. I think the "Who was..." series is a bit more accessible for low readers, but I definitely like the illustrations in this book better. The illustrations are more detailed and fun to look at.

I do a hero a week and George Lucas is one of the people I teach my kids about. I added him to the list when a bunch of kids were falling in love with Star Wars and I thought they'd like to know about the man behind the movies. He's not one that I would've picked on my own, but I do try (on occasion) to let the kids guide my teaching.

George Lucas is actually a pretty cool guy. It's amazing what he did with Star Wars. I like how he never stopped believing in his dreams and even when he was at risk for failure he went ahead with what he wanted to do. I also like that he chose relatively unknown actors for his pictures because he wanted to give them a chance.

My two favorite facts about George Lucas that I learned are:

*Even though his networth is more than $7 Billion he almost always wears the same outfit - flannel shirt, blue jeans and beat-up sneakers.

*He wrote the entire Star Wars screenplay on paper with a No. 2 pencil. (I'm super excited to throw this tidbit at my students when they are whining about writing on paper.)

I am George Lucas by Grace Norwich. When George was little he had a lot of dreams where he would be famous. He worked really hard in school and those dreams paid off and he was in the movie Indana Jones and star wars. he was one of the wealthiest movie makers of all time. George donated a lot of money to charity. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to be a film maker. I rate this a 4.5 stars

Biography
Unique feature: What I found I liked in this book was that this wasnt some political figure but a movie producer and I loved the layout of the book, and the view point. I would recommend this to 3rd grade.

I am George Lucas is a biography by Grace Norwich. I enjoyed this book, because it makes you realize that the names that you see in the credits of movies are people, just like us. They have their ups and downs in life, just like we do. In this book, you learn what goes on behind the scenes of movie makers' lives. You also learn what happens in the studio as well. George Lucas, a kid from a town in California, moves all the way up from nobody to one of the most successful movie directors/producers of all time. He was the creator of the world-renowned Star wars series. My favorite part of the book is when George makes his first Star Wars movie, because I love when the main characters are successful. This book was a well-made biography, clearly giving you the details of George Lucas's extraordinary life.

Norwich, Grace. I Am George Lucas (2013).
The set-up of the book is clear, concise, and sets the reader up with knowledge before the reading of the text. It starts with an Introduction, important people in his life story, a timeline of major events in his life, and then goes into the chapters about his life. After the chapters, it ends with 10 things to know about George Lucas, 10 interesting things about George Lucas, a glossary, places to visit to learn more (physical locations and internet websites), a Bibliography and an Index. The author also included film notes. The film notes were helpful and laid out a brief synopsis of each film along with the actors that were in the film. The set up is helpful and provides the reader with many opportunities to take their learning beyond the text.
The biography starts with a description of his hometown: Modesto, California. It describes small town living and how he struggled with school as a young child. During high school, he had a near death experience and decided to make a change. He would focus on his education and not so much on cars and music. It chronicled his ups and downs. He struggled with school, his father didn’t agree with his studying, and first film wasn’t a success. But George didn’t give up and he kept true to his ideas and vision. He kept on working, creating, and learning. There were difficult years, and he didn’t give up. Even after success, his work ethic remained intact. Writing Star Wars took a lot of work. George had to work for many hours a day, several days a week and he researched myths, religions, and even comic books. He wanted it to be for children and to focus on morality. He felt that good versus evil was a good storyline to work with. The text ends with a life lesson George learned about being compassionate and being fulfilled.
Target Audience: Third through Fifth Grade
Personal/Critique: The book was packed with information. This book tells an inspirational story of a young man who had a vision and a story to tell. Young George had to overcome many obstacles in his life. He also had to work extremely hard to be successful. The text highlights his incredible work ethic and shows that hard work pays off. Most importantly, this is the first biography I’ve come across that is about a famous movie director. It was different in content. Many young students are familiar with the Star Wars franchise and would interested in learning about George Lucas' life.

I was a little surprised that George Lucas is part of this fabulous series as he is still alive. The other entries seem to be all historically important people who are no longer with us. That being said, I was very glad to read about such an amazingly determined man. I have long been a fan of Lucas' movies and enjoyed reading about some of the influences in his career. Kids who read this will not only learn about a famous movie director/producer, but about a boy who didn't give up his dream no matter what others said.
This new biography series from Scholastic is perfect for 3rd graders on up and even reluctant older readers. The chapters are short and reader-friendly. The illustrations add to the overall information provided making the person more real to the reader. A great way to introduce important and influential figures to young readers.

Biography of George Lucas aimed at third and fourth grade readers, with an emphasis on Lucas's early life, his experiences in film school, and the making of the first Star Wars trilogy. The overall theme seems to be that Lucas took big risks to stay true to his own vision and passion and they paid off. The prequel trilogy and later achievements are mentioned briefly.

Seventh in a series of "I Am" books that also includes Sacagawea, Helen Keller, George Washington, Albert Einstein, Walt Disney, Roberto Clemente, and more. Despite the title, the book isn't written in the first person.

It didn't tell me anything I didn't already know, but I wasn't expecting it to. It hit all the high points with ease. When discussing the success and/or impact of a movie the author placed a high value on box office gross which I thought was a tad simplistic.

These children's biographies are a good "Cliff Notes" for learning about the real person. Many fascinating facts about George Lucas-didn't know he wrote the first Star Wars screenplay on paper with a #2 pencil! Also didn't know that the website Edutopia was funded by his earnings-he donates a LOT of money to charities or organizations that can make a difference. He also doesn't dress to impress. The book's focus on his profits were a little too much. Lots of good facts for kids who are Star Wars fans or interested in film-making.

Honestly, before I read this book I never even heard of George Lucas. Now I could probably tell you at least 7 things about him. When George was young he struggled in school and dreamed of becoming a race car driver. Then later in life he went to film college and directed some of the most successful films of all time. Some of those films include American Graffiti, Star Wars, and Indiana Jones. Then in 2012 Disney bought Lucasfilm Ltd for 4 billion dollars. I highly recommend any book in the " I Am" series if you want to learn about anyone who is important in American history.

This was very interesting book. I learned a lot from it. One thing is when he was 18 he wanted to work on cars and make cars but he stopped wanting that as a career because he got in a terrible car crash which almost killed him. Another fact is him and Steven Spielberg went to Hawaii to talk about his new movie Indiana jones he wanted Steven to direct it. There where a lot more facts and a lot stuff about Star Wars. The most best part about this book is that it's all about George Lucas.

This easy-to-read title contains good, basic information about filmmaker George Lucas. The father of Star Wars and Indiana Jones, not to mention American Graffiti, this man somehow managed to make films his own way without compromising his vision. Fans will enjoy seeing the photographs and reading about his family and upbringing and struggles and failures as well as his successes.

A good choice for 3rd - 5th graders who enjoy non-fiction and learning about real people, but don't want to be overwhelmed by too many details. I like the format of this series, especially the "10 Thing You Should Know About..." and "10 Things That Are Pretty Cool to Know" sections. This is a great pick for reluctant readers, especially the boys.
