Lo primero que me llamó la atención fue la portada y el título. Ambos curiosos. Parecía una historia
breve y nada particular.
De hecho, lo es. Una helada intensa cae sobre una ciudad porque parece que un niño la ha deseado, como un castigo divino ante la separación repentina de sus padres. Desde entonces, la comunidad se ve obligada a acercarse, a relacionarse para protegerse de la adversidad. Y entonces irán surgiendo nuevos sentimientos que la rutina ha tapado, nuevas oportunidades de salir al mundo, de empezar una relación, de plantearse cambiar y de estar satisfechos con lo poco que tenemos.
Las historias aparentemente paralelas que se entretejen entre sí acaban formando el perfecto tapiz de la felicidad.
No tengo un buen día para reseñar por circunstancias personales, pero he hecho un intento...
Lo recomiendo, es agradable de leer, aunque quizás solo hasta que te metes bien en la historia. A mi me ha dejado una sonrisa, y espero que sea así con el resto que lo han leído.

Que tanto vivimos encerrados en nosotros mismos y en nuestra rutina? o, que tan dependientes somos de nuestras costumbres, alejados de lo que hay a nuestro alrededor?
El libro refleja esta realidad a través de los personajes y de sus historias, cada una de ellas bastante interesantes.
Me gustó ver qué el autor no solo se enfocó en una sino que le dio a cada uno la importancia que debía de tener, pues tenían un peso importante en el libro y estaban conectadas con las de los demás.
Una lectura ligera y que te deja con un bonito mensaje de reflexion.

In the street where you live is there a bizarre mixture of characters such as a stripper, a Russian mathematician writing a thesis about the trajectories of fish, a depressed ex-musician bringing up the son of a Mexican singer, a gay couple so afraid of what their neighbours might think they never go out of the house together? I doubt it. If there aren't any normal people, how do you know the others are weird? The only vaguely real character in this fairy tale (not sure what else to call it) is the eleven year old whose story this is, who is about to become the fourteeth (I think, I was never very good at remembering numbers) boy at his school whose parents have split up. It is strange that the only vaguely real character is the only one not to be named, and the last page of the book makes it clear this was deliberate, though I don't really see the point of it as a literary device. The other characters, who start off being unlikely and end up being implausible, have names like Alexandra and Alexandria (twins) and Alexis and Alex (parent/child). What is that all about? Very French, I'd say. Oddity for the sake of oddity. I wonder if the storyteller was called Alexander?
I struggled a little with the translation, which seemed to produce an English text that was just slightly off. I also struggled with the "ice storm," and ice falling from the sky, because it is outside my experience. Here we would call it freezing rain, and it would be moderate compared to this humdinger.
I can see that the book was probably meant to make you feel happy but it was all a bit overdone. I mean, things turned out well for everybody, including highly peripheral characters like the headmistress with the broken coccyx. The book had its funny moments, and not always where the author intended comedy, I think, but it was all very unsatisfying. Even in fairy tales you have shade, some dark to make the light shine brighter. This story was, if anything, twee. Even if I hadn't read it before, it read like a cliche, all loose ends tied up, everyone living happily ever after. I was left wondering what the point of it all was. There didn't seem to be any sort of message or philosophy unless it's of the 'every cloud has a silver lining' sort or it's that (to paraphrase the stripper because I can't remember the actual words) love is like a taxi which, if it doesn't stop when you run after it, is already taken (which isn't even true, of course).

Aparte de la falta de originalidad para nombrar a sus personajes, y lo absurdo de muchas situaciones (como que los peces sonrían y se atusen ?????) el libro tiene una premisa interesante que decide reventar de todas las maneras posibles, pero ninguna buena. La forma de escribir (que bien podría ser por la traducción) es terrible, el ritmo empieza siendo aceptable para, casi al final, coger velocidad. Si te corre prisa terminar tu obra lo mismo no tenías que haberla empezado, yo qué sé.
Todas las mujeres de la historia son reducidas a 1) tetas (de una forma tan sumamente misógina que resulta absurdo) 2) apoyo moral de sus maridos. Además cae en estigmas constantes como, por ejemplo,
ue la stripper es una inculta y solo sirve para satisfacer a los hombres, hasta que conoce al matemático y entonces decide abrazar la monogamia absoluta y empieza a aprender cosas de cultura general (insertar el meme de la mujer que cuando coge un libro del suelo empieza a vestir diferente)
He de reconocer que es admirable que haya tantas mujeres en el planeta y este hombre se las haya ingeniado para esquivar a todas ellas.
El único personaje que se salva un poco es el niño que cuenta la historia, pero porque es más soso que el pan sin sal y tampoco da mucho juego a nada.
En fin, que soy masoquista y me lo he leído entero. Lo recomiendo? No. Que cuando era adolescente me lo leí encantada y ahora me ha parecido un horror? Pues también es verdad. Las maravillas de madurar y crecer.

Dunque: prendete e osservate un lettore onnivoro.
È un lettore che legge tantissimo.
In questo periodo ha letto svariati libri, molto impegnativi, molto tristi, dolorosi, di quelli che fanno riflettere, però son tutti belli.
È chiaro che il lettore è contento di averli letti, ma si sta afflosciando come una panna montata male.
Osservatelo meglio.
Il lettore guarda fuori dalla finestra, è Maggio, fuori c'è il sole, ma lui è malinconico, si è addossato tutti i pensieri neri dei libri letti da poco. Anche il bel tempo gli sembra solo uno sberleffo alle sue taciturne riflessioni.
Come fare? Ecco la soluzione: mettetegli questo libro sul comodino.
È una favola moderna, infarcita di buoni propositi, e di lampante ottimismo, non vincerà il premio Pulitzer, ma è spigliato, pulito, una boccata d'aria fresca, e soprattutto tira su il morale come un Polase dopo venti giri di campo.
Insomma un toccasana per il lettore abbacchiato dopo parecchi bellissimi ma "impegnativissimi e tristissimi" libri.
Guardatelo adesso che lo ha letto.
È un lettore nuovo, dipinto di fresco, felice della ricreazione offerta dai pesci e dalla loro traiettoria (adesso è da due ore che guardo il mio acquario con rinnovato interesse!), è un lettore che pensa comunque di rileggere Guerra e pace, ma all'ombra di un'acacia in fiore, con un vinello bianco in mano, durante un ozioso pomeriggio di Maggio.
Buono snack a tutti!

Oh dear, disappointing to the point of irritation. It looked intriguing, a French Canadian novel billed as an "International Bestseller," when I picked it up in a London bookshop. But - so childishly written that I wonder if it was not aimed at adolescents like the narrator, rather than the adult fiction table. Sentimental and simplistic to my mind, rather the "hilarious and heartwarming," of the cover copy. The story of an ice storm bringing out the best in everyone, could have been a charming fable, but fails for lack of a single credible character. in the end I was irritated that Canongate, a generally serious British publisher, should foist this piece of superficial nonsense on us, when so much that is good is passed over.

A pretty simple story written in a very basic style.
The female characters are so two dimensional i can only assume the author doesn't know any. By the end this aspect was so irritating it overwhelmed anything else that was going on in the book. The women seemed to be there solely to stand around watching their men get more manly.

Primer libro del año leído y menuda gozada, así da gusto empezar el año.
Este libro es muy cuqui con una historia muy pero que muy bonita, de estos libros que te dejan muy buen sabor de boca.
Me ha gustado mucho, una historia diferente con unos personajes muy entrañables.
No os cuento nada más por que perdería la magia, altamente recomendable.

Mientras lo leía pensaba que más que una novela, se trataba de una fábula o un cuento infantil pero para todos los públicos. Sin una prosa compleja, pero sí con una historia tierna, amable, sencilla y optimista. Ahí, justamente, radica su encanto. A mi me ha dejado con buen sabor de boca y lo he terminado con una sonrisa. Así que 4 estrellas.... ¿por qué no?.

July 15, 2020Niet uitgelezen. Het zou gaan over een jongetje dat de scheiding van zijn ouders wil tegenhouden en daar gaat het ook enigszins over. Ineens komen meerdere verhaallijnen tussendoor en halverwege het boek kon het mij nog steeds niet erg boeien. Dat lag niet per se aan de schrijfstijl, maar de verhaallijnen bleven los van elkaar en het bleef wat vaag. De verhaallijnen zullen de laatste 100 pagina's vast bij elkaar komen, maar dit verhaal laat ik aan andere lezers over.

Estuvo bien leer algo lindo, tierno y que además de profundo y de hacer reflexionar y empatizar fuese alegre. También hay que acordarse a veces de que los finales felices existen. Qué hilo conector más chulo es el cielo.

Siento que en este libro fallan unas cuantas cosas y voy a intentar ser constructivo.
Empiezo por las cosas que sí funcionan: me gusta que haya 3 historias paralelas cuyos capítulos se van entremezclando. Los personajes son bastante agradables y el libro se hace ameno de leer. Se agradece también la incorporación de una bonita pareja homosexual a la trama.
Ahora bien, tengo la sensación de que este libro está escrito para un público de 12-13 años. La redacción es cutre, simplona, con diálogos tremendamente forzados y un desarrollo infantil de los personajes.
Además, se deja ver cierto aire de cuñadismo en numerosos comentarios (cito textualmente: "Michel, Alexis, Boris, os ocuparéis de transportar a los ancianos, sois la parte física. Anne y Julie, os lvupareis del bienestar y la moral, sois la parte emocional" o "Cuando dos personas se aman, forman una sola"), por no hablar de la figura del psicoanalista, llena de clichés que dejan la psicología como pura charlatanería.
Empezó mejor de lo que terminó. Estuve dudando si ponerle 3 estrellas pero la última parte del libro claramente bajó su puntuación.

Beste soort feel-good boek dat er bestaat! Ik was helemaal meegesleurd in het verhaal, dat de goede kanten van mensen belicht in moeilijke tijden. Ik heb enkele keren hardop gelachen!

Quelle histoire adorable! Timing parfait de parler du verglas 98 en cette journée de froid glacial. Ça fait deux livres québécois des années 2006-2007 que je lis back a back et il y a quelque chose de plaisant à se replonger dans cette époque. Le temps coulait plus doucement on dirait..

There's a bizarre mix of characters: a stripper, a Russian mathematician, 2 men who pretend to be brothers, but are in fact lovers, but scared to come out...Th most normal character was the nameless 11 year old boy who told the story.
The author tried to use a bit of humor, but it didn't stick.
I've read the Dutch translation, but I struggled with some of the translated words who wouldn't fin in the context. Also a lot of writing mistakes. It was recommended as an 'international bestseller', but in my personal opinion this was a bit overrated.
I think the book was supposed to be a happy book, but by using a bit of magical realism, it missed it's goal. There are books about divorce and children trying to bring their parents back together (with a bit of magical realism)better than this one.

Una historia entretenida, dulce, tierna y para leer en una tarde, El frío modifica la trayectoria de los peces es, sin duda, un pequeño canto al amor. Aunque he disfrutado de su lectura, de la historia y del elenco de personajes, no me ha encantado. Quizás de haberlo leído hace unos ocho años (cuando pretendía hacerlo y tenía muchas ganas de leerlo), me hubiese aportado más a nivel emocional.
La historia la protagoniza (a grandes rasgos) un niño quebequés de once años al cual, durante las navidades de 1998, sus padres le anuncian que se van a divorciar. Sin comprender esa situación, su respuesta es gritarle al cielo que le ayudé; y el cielo le responde con la peor tormenta de hielo en años en Canadá (especialmente en la zona de Québec). Esta tormenta desata ciertas situaciones en la calle donde vive nuestro protagonista, y hará que se vayan sucediendo consecuencias muy bonitas.
Nos encontraremos así con la historia de Álex, el mejor amigo del protagonista, y su padre soltero, desempleado y desdichado en el amor, Alexis; con la historia de Julie, la vecina striptease que nunca ha encontrado el amor de su vida; la pareja homosexual formada por Simon y Michel, dos señores mayores que viven aislados y sin formalizar su relación de puertas hacia fuera; el estudiante ruso de doctorado, Boris, con su teoría sobre la trayectoria de los peces en el agua; y la propia familia del protagonista.
Así, y durante la semana en la que transcurre la novela, estos personajes se verán envueltos en situaciones 'creadas' por culpa de la tormenta de hielo, que va asolando el barrio, dejando sin electricidad ni agua potable a una parte de la calle… y, aunque la naturaleza humana se manifieste en el fango, veremos la evolución de todos los personajes, y nos daremos cuenta de cómo el frío modifica, no solamente la trayectoria de los peces, sino también la trayectoria de estas personas.

An entertaining, sweet, tender and to-read-in-an-afternoon story, Le froid modifie la trajectoire des poissons is, without a doubt, a small tribute to love. Although I’ve enjoyed reading this story and the cast of characters, I haven’t loved it.
We’ll found the story of a Quebecer boy of eleven years to whom, during the Christmas of 1998, his parents announce that they’re going to divorce. Without understanding that situation, his response is to cried to heaven for help; and its answers is the worst ice storm in years in Canada (especially in the area of Quebec). This storm unleashes certain situations in the street where our protagonist lives, and will cause very nice consequences to happen.
We will find ourselves with the story of Alex, the protagonist's best friend, and his single unemployed father, and unhappy in love, Alexis; with the story of Julie, the neighbour striptease who’s never found the love of her life; the homosexual couple formed by Simon and Michel, two elderly gentlemen who live isolated and without formalising their relationship outdoors; the Russian doctoral student, Boris, with his theory about the trajectory of fish; and the protagonist's own family.
Thus, and during the week in which the novel takes place, these characters will be involved in situations 'created' because of the ice storm, which is ravaging the neighbourhood, leaving no electricity or drinking water to half of the street... and, even if human nature manifests itself in the mud, we will see the evolution of all the characters, and we will realise how the cold modifies, not only the trajectory of the fish, but also the trajectory of this people.

Le narrateur a une dizaine d'année. Son monde s'effondre alors qu'il apprend que ses parents vont se séparer. Il implore alors le ciel de l'aider. Ce dernier lui envoie une sérieuse tempête de verglas qui perdure sur plusieurs journées et qui prive un bon nombre de Montréalais d'électricité. On est en Janvier 1998. Il est certain que le ciel l'a entendu et que grâce à lui, ses parents, ses voisins, vont vivre un tournant positif dans leurs relations. Ainsi, Boris, le chercheur soviétique rencontre Julie, danseuse nue qui sauvera ses poissons en leur offrant l'hospitalité et par la même occasion sa précieuse expérience scientifique. Simon et Michel vont enfin pouvoir afficher leur homosexualité et son meilleur ami, Alex, va pouvoir percer le mystère de sa naissance. Je n'en dis pas plus, c'est tout à fait délicieux car les réflexions du narrateur sont cocasses et que le roman fait la part belle à des humains altruistes. Un bon moment de lecture pour commencer l'année avec le sourire!

Para los amantes de la literatura de lo cotidiano, de los libros que tratan sobre la vida misma, “El frío modifica la trayectoria de los peces” es una novela que en sus cortas 210 páginas te hace encariñarte con unos personajes, que con la premisa de una gran helada hacen comunidad, descubren el amor y sanan sus heridas.
Un libro que puede gustarte o no, pero que sin duda te transportará a Quebec y te hará apreciar aquellos detalles de la vida que solo valoramos cuando un evento externo la descuadra por completo.

An unexpected feelgood that has it all, without being stereotyped whatsoever. It's more clever and curious. I strongly recommend it for when you want a book with a happy ending but without all the Hollywood hetero clichés.
