La pasticceria incantata

Esistono luoghi capaci di farti sentire accolto anche solo per l'atmosfera e il profumo che si respirano al loro interno, e la pasticceria di questo romanzo è esattamente così: aperta ventiquattr'ore su ventiquattro, a prima vista sembra un normale forno dove comprare pane, torte e biscotti con un signore un po' burbero dietro il banco. All'apparenza, però. Perché, quando il ragazzino protagonista di questa storia lo sceglie come rifugio per scappare da una situazione familiare difficile, la realtà che trova è ben diversa. A essere sfornati con l'ausilio di un misterioso uccello dalle piume blu sono dolci dagli enormi poteri, in grado di cambiare la vita delle biscotti diabolici alla cannella da offrire a chi non si sopporta, madeleine per cuori infranti, barrette di mandorle per ricordare il passato. Un vero laboratorio di magia, dove è possibile trovare dolci dagli esiti buoni, ma anche veri e propri concentrati di magia nera. Per tutti vale un avvertimento a prescindere dall'effetto positivo o negativo, il potere contenuto nei dolci altera inevitabilmente l'ordine del mondo e produce conseguenze talvolta drammatiche su chi li consuma, conseguenze che vanno soppesate con attenzione. Perché capita di trovare clienti insoddisfatti, come la donna che con un pretzel alle noci ha fatto finalmente innamorare l'uomo che desiderava, ma che a breve distanza torna in pasticceria per liberarsene. In fuga dalla matrigna e solo al mondo, il ragazzo accetta di buon grado la proposta del pasticcere che gli offre vitto e alloggio in cambio di un aiuto nel gestire gli ordini, senza sapere che quello che lo attende sarà un viaggio fra le luci e le ombre della magia, in grado di offrirgli una consapevolezza nuova sul potere e le conseguenze delle sue azioni. Un mago pasticcere custode degli equilibri invisibili che regolano le forze dell'universo, un ragazzo che dovrà affrontare i terribili segreti della sua famiglia e un uccello azzurro che alle prime luci dell'alba si trasforma in una ragazzina sono i protagonisti di questa fiaba dark, scritta da una delle autrici più apprezzate sulla scena letteraria coreana.

Książka nietuzinkowa z niesamowicie mądrym przesłaniem i napisana w taki sposób jakiego jeszcze nigdy nie widziałam.

Piekarnia czarodzieja to opowieść o magicznych ciastkach i chłopcu który przechodzi traumatyczne wydarzenia w swoim jakże krótkim jeszcze życiu.

Chłopiec do końca pozostaje nam anonimową postacią, co moim zdaniem jest niezwykle mądrym zabiegiem zastosowanym przez autora. Możliwe że jest to sposób na powiedzenie że każdemu z nas moze przydarzyć się owa sytuacja? Znacie jakiegoś czarodziejskiego piekarza który dodaje magii do swoim wyrobów?

Na swojej drodze bohater spotka Niebieskiego Ptaka który okaże się wybawieniem i przyjaciółką.
Ale czy to napewno przyjaźń? Czy magii można zaufać?

Książka wydaje się z początku niepozorna, jednakże jej wnętrze nie jest tak piękne jak szata graficzna czy sama okładka. Samo wnętrze jest brutalne i przepełnione traumatycznymi przeżyciami. To co napotkacie w tej książce, jakie przeżycia poszczególnych osób przeczytacie, jest nie do opisania.
W każdą historie wchodziłam nieświadomie a później mocno się dziwiłam do czego zdolny jest ludzki gatunek.

Powieść dzieli się na rozdziały które są zaznaczone w sposób fenomenalny. Każda część książki ma inny symbol jakim jest dane pieczywo bądź ciasto. Jest zachwycona takim wyjściem i ogromne brawa i ukłony z tej okazji.

Styl pisania autora jest stosunkowo inny niż sam europejski i o wiele bardziej surowy. Jest to literatura azjatycka więc postacie są również inaczej narysowane.
Wykreowanie bohaterów pokazuje jak bardzo nasza kultura równi się od kultury azjatyckiej. Tam w szkołach bądź domach nie ma takiej pobłażliwości i miłej atmosfery, że jak coś się nie uda to oczywiście nie szkodzi. Tam jest wywoływanie presji i dodawanie jak największej ilości obowiązków. Oczywiście nie wszędzie, to trzeba zaznaczyć.

Książkę czytało mi się niesamowicie szybko a pomysł z podwójnym zakończeniem zmiótł mnie z planszy. Nie spodziewałam się tego ale byłam jeszcze bardziej zachwycona niż przedtem. Ogromne WOW. Inaczej się tego opisać nie da.
Polecam wam się zapoznać z tą książką bo gwarantuje wam że nie znajdziecie nigdzie drugiej takiej.

Cudowna. Baśniowa, ironiczna, ze świetnymi bohaterami. Prosta, ale przepiękna - stylem, przekazem, historią. Czytając ją, czułam się bezpiecznie - jakbym wróciła do czegoś dawnego, słodkiego i ulotnego. Trochę jak gdy jako dzieciak oglądałam anime z gatunku okruchy życia. Takie anime, w którym jest bohater, który przeniósł się do sennego miasteczka z jakiegoś Tokio i spotyka osoby - i każde kilka odcinków to historia innej osoby. Historie zwykłe i magiczne. To taka książka. Wspaniała. Piękny realizm magiczny, piękne wszystko.

this book is beyond my expectation. jujur ketipu sama cover dan judulnya, kirain bakal “light & sweet” kayak buku-buku lainnya yang juga bertema magic bakery. meskipun masih tergolong ringan, buku ini cukup “dark” dan nyakitin karena mengangkat isu tentang child-abuse, bullying, dan pelecehan seksual.

selain itu, yang bikin unik juga buku ini menyediakan 2 ending, “Jika Ya” dan “Jika Tidak.” actually, i enjoyed it dan pesan yang disampaikan juga bagus. pas baca jadi laper karena kebayang bau roti-roti dari wizard bakery!

“Mana ada sesuatu yang “pasti” di dunia ini? Dongeng mungkin hanya cerita fiksi, tapi tidak benar-benar omong kosong. Waktu dan peradaban mungkin berubah tapi sifat manusia tidak akan mengalami perubahan dramatis.”

Nie wiem czemu, ale byłam przekonana, że Piekarnia Czarodzieja będzie dość lekką historią skierowaną do młodszego odbiorcy - w końcu to baśń. Zapomniałam, że baśń to nie bajka i że może być całkiem mroczna - tak jak to jest w tym przypadku. Dodatkowo wszystko osadzone zostało w prawdziwym świecie - może nie jest to konkretnie dopowiedziane (zarówno jeśli chodzi o czas jak i miejsce), ale mamy wspomnienie o sklepach internetowych, czy Playstation.

Całość ma ciekawą strukturę. Mamy główną historię podzieloną na rozdziały w których skupiamy się głównie na konkretnych produktach z tytułowej piekarni (nawet dostajemy do nich przepisy!) i pobocznych historiach z nimi związanymi. A najciekawsze z tego wszystkiego jest świadomość, że sami możemy wybrać zakończenie - albo przeczytać obie opcje, jeśli lubimy gdybać.

A jeśli chodzi o to co się tam działo, to powiedziałabym, że jest to książka raczej dla starszej niż młodszej młodzieży, głównie ze względu na poruszane delikatne tematy, które pojawiają się w naszej ponurej rzeczywistości. Nie są one przedstawione w graficzny sposób, jednak warto mieć tę informację na uwadze zastanawiając się dla kogo Piekarnia Czarodzieja się nada.

Hola, es la primera vez que leo a un autor coreano y la verdad es que me gusto.

Es una historia de magia, pero no de la magia que estamos acostumbrados tipo Harry Potter, más bien es un cuento de un mago que lleva mucho mensaje para razonar internamente. Me gusto como se desarrollo la historia y como termina.

เรื่องราวของ 'วิซาร์ดเบเกอรี่' ร้านขนมปังที่เปิด 24 ชั่วโมง มีเด็กสาวยืนประจำหน้าเคาน์เตอร์ และมีชายหนุ่มคอยทำขนมอบอยู่หลังร้าน วิซาร์ดเบเกอรี่ไม่ใช่ร้านขายขนมปังธรรมดา แต่เป็นร้านขายขนมปังที่อบด้วยเวทมนตร์ ผู้ใดที่ได้กินเข้าไปจะทำให้ความปรารถนาของผู้นั้น(?)เป็นจริง

นั่นคือจุดเด่นของร้านค่ะ ร้านแห่งนี้ขายขนมอบเวทมนต์ตามคำสั่งซื้อของลูกค้า ค่าขนมสูงลิ่ว คำเตือนก็ฟังดูน่ากลัว เพราะมันคือความปรารถนาที่ต้องแลกมาด้วยอะไรบางอย่าง

และด้วยความที่ร้านเปิด 24 ชั่วโมง จึงหลีกหนีไม่พ้นต้องพบเจอความวุ่นวายบางอย่างที่โผล่เข้ามาโดยไม่ได้ตั้งใจ มีเด็กหนุ่มคนหนึ่งหนีออกจากบ้าน หนีมาจากครอบครัวที่ทำเขาใจสลาย เขาถูกกล่าวหาในสิ่งที่เขาไม่ได้ทำ และวิซาร์ดเบเกอรี่แห่งนี้ได้ให้ที่หลบหนีแก่เขา

เนื้อหาค่อนไปทางสลดและหดหู่ ดราม่าค่อนข้างหนัก มีความแฟนตาซีแบบดาร์คๆ

ความจริงตัวละครหลักเรื่องนี้คือเด็กหนุ่มที่หนีออกจากบ้านค่ะ ผู้เขียนมุ่งเน้นโฟกัสไปที่ชีวิตครอบครัวของเด็กชาย บ้านไม่ใช่สถานที่ที่ปลอดภัยสำหรับเขา มีทั้งเรื่องความรุนแรงในครอบครัว ความรุนแรงทางเพศมาเกี่ยวข้อง ความกดดันทางสถานะสังคม โรคซึมเศร้า การฆ่าตัวตาย สารพัดแห่งความสลดหดหู่มาสุมรวมอยู่ในเล่มนี้ทั้งหมด ส่วนวิซาร์ดเบเกอรี่ก็เป็นแหล่งพักพิงชั่วคราวให้เด็กชายได้ไตร่ตรองและทบทวนชีวิตไปพลางๆ ระหว่างหลบหนีจากตำรวจ โดยเขาต้องทำงานให้ที่นี่เป็นการแลกเปลี่ยน ซึ่งที่นั่นทำให้เขาได้พบกับลูกค้าและเหตุการณ์ประหลาดต่างๆ มากมาย

เล่มนี้เป็นแนวเรา พอหนังสือถึงมือปุ๊บก็ลัดทุกคิวเพื่ออ่าน ถ้าตัดเรื่องการจัดหน้ากระดาษ/การแบ่งคำในแต่ละบรรทัดแปลกๆ ที่อ่านทีไรชวนหงุดหงิดนะ เราก็รู้สึกว่าเล่มนี้มีสเน่ห์ดึงดูดให้เราอ่านเรื่อยๆ จนแทบวางไม่ลง เราชอบความดาร์คของเรื่อง ตอนแรกเข้าใจแค่ว่า เด็กชายมีปัญหา 'ทั่วไป' กับที่บ้าน ปัญหาแบบที่เด็กวัยรุ่นทุกคนน่าจะเจอสักครั้งในชีวิต พออ่านไปสักระยะ เริ่มรู้สึกว่า ปัญหาที่เจอมันแย่กว่านั้น แย่จนแทบจะดิ่งลงเหวให้ได้เลยทีเดียว

ส่วนเหตุการณ์ฝั่งวิซาร์ดเบเกอรี่ ก็มีเรื่องสนุกๆ เกิดขึ้นเช่นกัน บรรดาสินค้าในร้านดูน่าตื่นตาตื่นใจไปเสียหมด ไหนลูกค้าเจ้าปัญหาอีก เป็นทั้งสถานที่ปลอบประโลมและสถานที่ที่มอบบทเรียนชีวิตไปพร้อมๆ กัน

โดยภาพรวมคือชอบ ค่อนไปทางชอบมาก สนุกดีค่ะ แต่เนื้อหาดาร์คมากเลยทีเดียว

„Piekarnia czarodzieja” zagnieździ się w mojej głowie jako niepozorna książka o objętości 220 stron!

Przed lekturą nie czytałem opisu książki i recenzji czytelników, chciałem popłynąć i przekonać się na własnej skórze, z czym mam do czynienia. Nie spodziewałem się, że to, po co sięgnę, to nie tylko mroczna baśń koreańska, a przede wszystkim rzeczywisty świat połączony z realizmem magicznym.

Naszą bazą postaci są porzucony chłopiec z problemami rodzinnymi, specyficzny czarodziej i Niebieski Ptak. I wyobraźcie sobie, że to wystarczyło, żeby zaprezentować pełną historię o emocjonalnym znęcaniu, porzuceniu i gwałcie.

Jestem autentycznie w szoku, jak bardzo ta książka na mnie wpłynęła. A myślałem, że to będzie TYLKO mroczna fantastyka koreańska. Nic bardziej mylnego.

Polecam z całego serca!

,, Piekarnia Czarodzieja"- to baśniowa, nietuzinkowa powieść z garścią mroku i tajemnicy. Myślę, że dotychczas nie spotkałam się z podobną książką. Sądziłam, iż będzie ona otulająca oraz należąca do literatury raczej "lekkiej", jednak po jej przeczytaniu mogę stwierdzić, że porusza ona ciężkie i trudne sprawy. Chciałabym również wspomnieć o opisach, które mnie urzekły, a zwłaszcza fakt jak umyślnie odnoszą się one do jedzenia czy przypraw, jesteśmy przez to jeszcze bardziej w stanie wgryźć się w cały klimat ,,Piekarni Czarodzieja". Podkreślę także nietypowość (przynajmniej dla mnie, ponieważ nigdy na nic podobnego nie natrafiłam w książce) zakończenia, niezwykle intrygujący zabieg autorki. Ukazuje nam jak każda decyzja (nawet niepozorna) tka naszą historię.

The only thing I regret after reading this book is not having read it sooner.

This is not a typical book about wizards and magic. Although there is magic involved, there are also other topics such as physical abuse, suicide, peadophilia... which what makes the book so different.

The sad story of the main character is told through a sequence of recipes from the Wizard's Bakery, which are explained in the chapters. The bread, cookies and pastry sold there might look normal but they hide a very powerful magical spell.

I really enjoyed this book, and felt for the main character.

This is the second book by this author that I have read and really enjoyed it.

The Wizard's Bakery (2025) translated by Jamie Chang is the third novel by 구병모 (Gu Byeong-mo) to appear in English after:
- The Old Woman with the Knife (2022) Chi-Young Kim's translation of 파과(2013)
- Your Neighbour's Table (2024), Chi-Young Kim's translation of 네 이웃의 식탁 (2018)

But the Korean original, 위저드 베이커리 (2009), was the author's debut novel.

The first thing to say here is that the English novel is, I think, somewhat mis-marketed - 'a fantastical coming-of-age story for fans of whimsical translated fiction' is wording designed to appeal to fans of cosy healing fiction. But the translation itself comes with a disclaimer / trigger warning at the start:

Please read with care. This book touches on dark topics and sensitive subject matter as follows: domestic violence, grief and loss, sexual assault, physical abuse, rape, suicide/ attempted suicide, death of a parent, paedophilia, emotional manipulation, self- harm.

This is a work of magical realism depicting the harsh reality of the society we unfortunately live in, and the consequences of using magic to avoid taking responsibility for one’s actions.

And, to that point, the narrator of the novel, a 16 year old boy spends the novel hiding in the eponymous bakery after he is accused of sexually abusing his 8 year old step-sister.

The book opens:

중불에 달구어진 설탕 냄새가 난다.
그와 함께 다른 모든 것들이 감각의 뒤편에서 들고일어난다. 방금 막 치대어 풍부한 글루텐을 함유한 중력분 밀가루 반죽의 탄력과, 프라이팬 위에 원을 그리며 녹는 노란 버터에서 일어나는 거품과, 커피에 얹은 부드럽고 촉촉한 생크림이 그려 내는 물결무늬. 나는 그 가게 앞에 설 때마다 발효된 이스트의 활발한 움직임을 인식할 수 있었고, 그날의 타르트 위에 얹을 무화과잼 또는 살구잼의 풍미를 섬세하게 식별할 수 있었다

I smell sugar caramelising over medium heat. And with that, my senses turn keen: I feel the elasticity of dough freshly kneaded from high- gluten bread flour, hear a pat of yellow butter bubbling into a circle on a frying pan, see the ripples created by a dollop of whipped cream garnishing a cup of coffee. Whenever I stand in front of the bakery, I can feel the yeast at work in the resting dough and make out whether the subtle scent of the tart of the day was fig or apricot.

which would put us in the healing-bakery-magical-coffee-shop-(with a laundromat attached) territory except the next sentence reads, starkly: I am sick of bread.

The narrator's mother abandoned him in a train station when he was 6, as she left home - and his father was too preoccupied with his job to seemingly notice for some days, assuming he was with his mother. After his mother died of suicide, the father remarried, and while the narrator points out that his stepmother was far from the wicked version of fairytales, their relationship gradually deteriorated. He is also bullied at school due to a severe stutter. And when his sister shows signs of abuse, she first suggests it was a teacher, before, under pressure from the school, changing her mind and accusing him, leaving him to flee from his family and indeed the police.

Due to their troubled relationship, even before the awful accusation, he used to get dinner at a 24 hour bakery near to their apartment complex. But the proprietor was, to say the least, rather odd:

Provided he kept his mouth shut, the baker looked like any other artisan with a quiet focus on his work: man in a silly- looking paper hat with a ponytail peeking out below, face the colour of finely sifted baking powder. His movements meticulous, graceful and efficient, he looked the part of a skilled pastry chef capable of making a living from word-of-mouth alone, without having to join a franchise.

I had always seen him that way as well, until one day when I pointed a pair of tongs at a pastry that sort of resembled a streusel- topped bun but with some questionable modifications, and asked what was in it. The girl at the register started to say, ‘Oats and rye and—’

‘Liver. Dried,’ a voice interrupted. I raised my head to see the baker standing in the kitchen doorway, just past the girl’s stiffening shoulders. ‘Finely ground human infant liver powder. Three parts liver mixed with seven parts flour.’

He seeks sanctuary in the bakery as the only place open to hide. And there he discovers that the baker is actually a Wizard; the girl behind the counter his familiar - part human, part bluebird; and that while the products on sale are standard bakery products, the baker/Wizard wasn't entirely joking. The bakery also runs an online business - www.wizardsbakery.com (rather disappointly the link does not work) - selling variations on their products with secret, and possibly sinister, ingredients which cause spells.

And their most popular products tend to be those that bring misfortune on others - although the Wizard, and the website, warns the customers to be careful what they wish for, both in the potential effect on others but how this might rebound on them.

Rather like the archetypal healing novel which it proceeded in the original - 시간이 멈춰선 화과자점, 화월당입니다/ A Midnight Pastry Shop Called Hwawoldang a very obvious comparison - the story is episodic, with chapters linked to particular bakery products.

But here the tales are salutary - indeed the main morale of the story, as per the disclaimer/trigger warning at the start - is that many of the customers are using magic to try and escape the consequences of their own actions. And yet the magic has consequences of its own. And the Wizard isn't very sympathetic to ungrateful customers:

나는 꿈을 꾸지 못하는 그가 조금은 마음 아팠다. 그는 어쩌면, 인간들이 꾸는 꿈이란 그들만의 불필요한 환각제에 지나지 않는다고 냉소적으로 생각할지도 모르지만 말이다. 타인의 꿈속에서 어떤 상징과 배열을 읽어 내는 능력이 있으나, 그 꿈을 자기 것으로는 할 수 없는 사람. 우리가 꿈이나 환상이라고 치부하는 것들이 그에게는 모두 명백한 현실일 테니.
때로는 한심하거나 어리석기까지 하지만 그것밖에는 선택할 수 없는 남들의 바람을 이루어지게 도와주면서, 정작 자기 자신은 소원이 없는 사람. 남들의 감사만 받아도 모자랄 마당에 뜻밖의 뒤틀린 결과 때문에 비난을 받아야 하는 사람.

It was a little sad knowing that he could not dream, though he likely thought that human dreams were nothing more than delusions. He was a man who had the ability to interpret symbols and patterns in other people’s dreams, but could not make that dream his own, for what we consider to be fantasy is all reality to him.

He helped others fulfil their infinitely pathetic, foolish, yet dire wishes, but had no wishes of his own. Far from receiving all the thanks he deserved, he was reviled for the unpleasant, unexpected outcome.

It must be nice for people to have someone to blame. Did that make them feel better?

So in many respects this is an anti-healing novel - the author herself comments in an afterword:

This is just a story about choices. Perhaps the odds are against us, perhaps life is nothing more than a baffling roll of the dice. Whichever the case, the consequences are ours alone to bear. I bet there are more people out there who have conceded to the flow of life, who merely suffer through it – more often than not living with baggage, without a home to return to, with bridges burned and never rebuilt. Because of that, I’ve unconsciously eschewed the narrative of homecoming and healing that lead to reconciliation and ends with visions for the future.

Which makes for a very welcome change in translation (and makes it disappointing that the Korean literature of this genre went down a different path).

Neatly the novel finishes with a 'choose your own ending' - where the narrator, returning home to confront his family, faces a choice as to whether to use a powerful spell or not. There are two alternative endings based on his /the reader's choice - but, in keeping with the novel's tone neither is a happy-ever-after one, particularly for the narrator's family.

A very welcome addition to the list of from-Korean translations in 2025.

Książka piękna i niedopracowana zarazem. Nie wiem, czy wina leży po stronie autorki, czy tłumaczy, ale gdyby pozbyć się drobnych potknięć, to człowiek zostałby wyłącznie z wrażeniem, że czyta coś cudownego. Bo była to historia niewątpliwie pełna uroku. Taka, gdzie magia nie zawsze jest dobra i piękna, ale tworzy ona klimat, który sobie cenię.

Całodobowa piekarnia pełna aromatów oraz przepysznych wypieków staje się kołem ratunkowym dla naszego głównego bohatera. Oskarżony o to czego nie dokonał ucieka i podejmuje decyzję, by znaleźć schronienie w pobliskiej piekarni prowadzonej przez ekscentrycznego Piekarza. Jednak nie ma nic za darmo, przysługa za przysługę działa, więc chłopak godzi się na prowadzenie jego strony internetowej, gdzie sprzedawane są wypieki z ciekawymi właściwościami.

Okładka cudna, tematyka piekarni z magicznymi wypiekami brzmi świetnie. Jednak jak już otworzymy książkę to jest ona przepełniona takim bólem, niesprawiedliwością, samotnością, rozczarowaniem, przemocą i okrucieństwem, że głowa mała. To właśnie te wypieki stają się podstawą do opowiedzenia nowej historii, a każda z nich ma w sobie coś bolesnego. Szybko okazuje się, że magia nie jest cudownym lekarstwem na problemy, a jeżeli z niej już korzystamy to musimy zapłacić czasami bardzo wysoką cenę. Nawet może doprowadzić do szaleństwa. Książka dedykowana jest dla starszego czytelnika i niech ta niepozorna okładka nikogo nie zmyli, bo pojawia się temat wykorzystania seksualnego, odebrania sobie życia czy przemocy w rodzinie.

Do mnie ta książka na swój sposób przemówiła i będzie mieć u mnie wysoką ocenę.

ตอนแรกเข้าใจว่าเรื่องนี้จะ feel good นะ แบบเด็กกับร้านเวทมนต์ที่ขายขนมที่ทำให้ฝันเป็นจริงไรงี้ แต่อ่านไปอ่านมา อห ดาร์กมากกก แค่เรื่องของตัวเอกก็มีพูดถึงปัญหาครอบครัวและเรื่อง sexual harassment แล้ว แต่ส่วนตัวนี่ก็ชอบข้อคิดของเรื่องนะ แบบหนังสือมันไม่หนามากก็จริงแต่ key communication message คือชัดมาก (แต่เอาจริงคาดหวังว่าจะได้อ่านเรื่องของลูกค้าที่ซื้อของในร้านมากกว่านี้ แต่เอาจริงมันก็ไม่ได้พูดถึงมากขนาดนั้น) นอกจากนี้ก็ชอบที่ในเล่มมีตอนจบแบบ 2 route ด้วยแบบเออ มันดีอะแกก เอาเป็นว่าใครสนใจลองไปหาอ่านได้ฮะ

Wizard Bakery bercerita tentang seorang anak laki-laki berumur 16 tahun yang tinggal di keluarga yang jauh dari kata harmonis. Saat berumur 6 tahun, ia pernah ditinggal ibunya di stasiun dan baru bisa pulang ke rumah setelah seminggu. Tak berapa lama, ibunya meninggal dan ayahnya menikah lagi dengan seorang yang dipanggilnya Guru Bae, karena ia adalah seorang guru SD, yang memiliki anak perempuan bernama Mu Hee. Momen si anak laki-laki menganggap Guru Bae adalah ibunya hanya bertahan sekejap mata karena Guru Bae bersikap layaknya ibu tiri jahat yang selalu muncul dalam buku cerita anak yang membuat si anak laki-laki semakin tidak memiliki tempat di rumahnya sendiri. Ketiadaan sosok ayah, karena ayahnya terlalu sibuk dan terlalu tidak peduli pada anaknya, pun menambah kesengsaraan hidup si anak laki-laki. Sampai puncak kesengsaraannya terjadi pada hari ia dituduh melecehkan adik tirinya. Si anak laki-laki pun memutuskan untuk kabur sebelum hidupnya semakin kacau. Ia masuk ke sebuah toko roti yang dikunjunginya 2 hari sekali, semata-mata agar dia tidak perlu makan malam dengan ibu tirinya, dan meminta si Tukang Roti menyembunyikan dirinya.

Aku sempat mengira bahwa toko roti yang bernama Wizard Bakery itu hanya toko roti biasa yang buka 24 jam dengan pembuat roti yang eksentrik karena setiap kali si anak laki-laki membeli roti ia selalu mengatakan bahwa roti-roti tersebut dibuat dari bahan-bahan aneh, hati bayi yang dikeringkan misalnya, dan kotoran burung robin. Iuh! Tapi nyatanya, bersama si anak laki-laki, aku diajak menyaksikan keanehan dan keajaiban yang menguar dari toko roti, si Tukang Roti tentu saja, dan juga asistennya, Burung Biru.

Karena diceritakan dari sudut pandang orang pertama, yaitu si anak laki-laki sendiri (yang sepertinya tidak pernah disebutkan namanya) aku bisa dengan jelas "melihat" segala hal yang terjadi di toko roti itu selama si Tukang Roti mengizinkan tokonya menjadi "rumah aman" sementara bagi si anak laki-laki. Wizard Bakery beroperasi secara offline dan online. Saat masuk ke toko tersebut, para pelanggan bisa memesan segala macam roti "biasa" dan setelah itu menjalani kehidupan mereka yang "biasa". Tapi, roti-roti yang dijual secara online adalah roti-roti yang mengandung sihir yang dibuat sesuai dengan pesanan. Kalau kalian ketemu toko roti yang menjual roti-roti penuh sihir seperti itu apa kalian tertarik beli? Mau Puding Kustar Pikiran yang bisa menambah konsentrasi dan membuang kesialan, Scone Kismis Perdamaian yang bisa membuat kita berbaikan dengan orang lain jika sedang ada masalah, Madeleine Nanas Patah Hati yang bikin cepat move on, atau Sable Chocolat "Tidak, Terima Kasih" yang ampuh kalau mau mengusir orang? Oh, atau Doppelganger Financier yang bisa bikin kita punya kloning, jadi kalau lagi males ngantor kita bisa leha-leha di rumah biar kloningnya yang kerja. Sounds legit ya yang terakhir 🤭🤣 Yang paling menjadi best seller adalah Biskuit Kayu Manis yang berisi informasi, "Pokoknya, berikan kepada orang yang tidak Anda sukai. Kapasitas mental orang itu akan kacau selama kurang lebih dua jam dan akan melakukan kesalahan dalam setiap tindakannya". Rupanya banyak orang-orang yang mau berbuat jahat dengan cara yang "manis".

Membaca buku ini tuh candu sekali rasanya. Aku seperti diajak naik roller coaster perasaan. Di bab sebelumnya muncul perasaan yang bikin penasaran; lalu di bab selanjutnya perasaanku diaduk-aduk sedemikian rupa dengan perih, pedih, marah; di bab selanjutnya lagi muncul perasaan unik yang menggelitik. Buku ini juga menarik karena menyajikan ending yang berupa kemungkinan, yang membuat aku sebagai pembaca yang menilai sendiri mana akhir yang paling baik untuk si anak laki-laki. Tentu saja aku memilih ending yang terakhir di mana si anak laki-laki akhirnya tidak memakan Time Rewinder, belajar untuk menjalani hidup layaknya manusia normal sambil menyimpan kenangannya bersama si Tukang Roti dan juga Burung Biru dalam relung hatinya yang paling dalam.

Banyak sekali kata yang berkecamuk dalam otakku sementara hatiku berusaha merangkul hangat yang menjalar sesaat setelah aku tiba pada tanda titik terakhir. Buku ini bukan buku yang penuh dengan pesan tersirat, bukan juga buku tentang tokoh utama yang menjadi pahlawan untuk hidupnya sendiri. Buku ini berisi tentang kemungkinan-kemungkinan yang kita ambil dalam hidup, tentang segala konsekuensi dari kemungkinan-kemungkinan itu, dan bagaimana kita bisa tumbuh menjadi sosok manusia yang bisa bertanggung jawab atas konsekuensi dari pilihan yang kita ambil. Pulang ke rumah, berjalan menuju kesembuhan, dan bertahan pun adalah beberapa pilihan bijak yang bisa hdir dalam hidup kalau kita cukup berani berpijak pada kenyataan. Dan melalui buku, sekali lagi aku diajak untuk "menemui" orang-orang yang belum pernah kutemui di dunia nyata dan juga "mengintip" kehidupan lain yang belum pernah ku rasakan di dunia nyata. Pokoknya aku suka sekali dengan buku ini!

1.5 Don’t let the cozy, gentle cover fool you - this book is pure darkness. Originally published in 2009, this seems to be capitalizing on the success healing fiction has enjoyed in English-speaking markets; the only problem is: it’s not healing fiction whatsoever.

Content Warnings: child physical abuse, child sexual abuse, rape, gaslighting, physical violence, sexual violence, suicide, self-harm, toxic relationships, controlling partner, stalking, assault, body horror, murder, demonic nightmares. Many of these range from prominent to graphic.

I was really disappointed in this book, especially having enjoyed “Apartment Women” by the same author. The writing wasn’t as compelling (I mean, it’s an older book so that kinda makes sense) and fell very flat emotionally. The characters, especially the bakery customers, were pretty much all objectively awful people (Bluebird being the exception). The Baker was unstable in a way that made me nervous and the unnamed teenager didn’t have much personality outside of a speech impediment. The bakery sense of place and food writing was entirely missing-in-action or, in the case of the latter, disgustingly subverted. The overall vibe was claustrophobic and tense. While I think the choice of omniscient narrator was to lean into the fairy tale theme, it didn’t work for me as a reader when we were experiencing the story through the teenage boy (who couldn’t possibly have known many of the things in the info-dumpy sections).

I understand that the French language edition has an author’s note where the author shares that they intentionally subverted the ‘healing fiction’ genre, steering away from positively, healing, and, dare I say, saccharine. I appreciate the energy but this went too far in the other direction, into trauma porn territory.

Do not be fooled by the blurb comparisons, especially the one comparing this to the middle-grade book “The Rainfall Market”. Even Dallergut Dream Department Store is an unfair comparison. Did the publishers even read this book? It's more of a horror than anything remotely 'healing'.

I finished this book feeling misled and manipulated… by the cover, the blurb, and the comparisons. I wonder if I'd have felt differently if this hadn't been pitched so hard as 'cozy' and 'healing'. 🤔 I'll never understand why publishers do this - a book isn't going to find its audience if they're misrepresenting it this badly. Hopefully it's rectified before publication.

Non so proprio da dove iniziare per dirvi quanto "La pasticceria incantata" di Gu Byeong-mo mi sia piaciuto; anzi, sì, inizierò col dire che, solitamente, a me i fantasy non piacciono: non riesco a immedesimarmici. Ma quest'opera si è rivelata un'eccezione!
«Questo», come la stessa Gu afferma nella "Nota" al fondo del libro, «è un racconto sulle scelte».
La situazione disastrosa a casa che porterà il protagonista all'interno della pasticceria incantata e a trascorrervi del tempo lo metterà a contatto con una lezione importantissima che inerisce proprio alle scelte che si compiono: «"Quello che voglio dire è che dovresti prenderti la responsabilità delle conseguenze delle tue scelte"». E se per voi questa lezione è troppo banale, allora dovreste proprio leggere "La pasticceria incantata" affinché possiate accorgervi di quanto banale, questa lezione, non lo sia affatto. Se ci si guarda con distacco, ci si accorge di quanto spesso (forse, troppo spesso) siamo inclini a incolpare gli altri per scelte che noi abbiamo compiuto e che si sono rivelate dei boomerang - e questo fatto, dice Gu, neanche la magia può eliminarlo, anche quando le responsabilità derivanti dalle proprie scelte sono chiaramente espresse: «Forse conviene avere sempre qualcuno da incolpare: "Sei stato tu a creare quella stranezza. Se non fosse esistita, non avrei mai nemmeno pensato di infrangere le regole..."».
"La pasticceria incantata" pone al centro, dunque, il tema delle scelte e delle responsabilità che da esse discendono, mettendo in evidenza quanto sia difficile per gli esseri umani assumersi fino in fondo la responsabilità delle proprie azioni, più facilmente individuando un capro espiatorio che possa assumerle al posto loro. Ma pone anche al centro le possibilità che potrebbero presentarsi una volta che si decide di non mettere in atto questo comportamento: possibilità di crescita, di sviluppo, di maturazione, per quanto doloroso questo percorso possa essere.
La prossima volta che entrate in una pasticceria - a maggior ragione se si chiama "La pasticceria incantata"! - ricordatevi che potreste avere a che fare con un mago piuttosto cinico (all'apparenza) che, con fattezze di pasticcere, potrebbe offrirvi non tanto una «felicità da godere, bensì una pesante responsabilità».
Questa è una favola un po' dark che contiene più realtà che fantasy; non credo si possa dimenticare che, come afferma il narratore, «per quanto frutto dell'immaginazione, le fiabe non sono mai completamente inventate o senza un fondo di verità. Anche se cambiano le generazioni e le culture, la natura umana resta sempre la stessa».

Zapach tych wszystkich pyszności czułam tak, jakby były w moim pokoju. Bohaterów polubiłam, ale trudno było mi się z nimi zżyć w 100% przez to, że książka była krótka. Zakończenie na duży plus.

Ale to była ciekawa i intrygująca przygoda! Widziałam, że wiele osób zaskoczyła, myślałam - jestem na to gotowa. Nie byłam xD okazała się bardzo oryginalna, wciągająca, przy tym przyjemna, a jednocześnie mroczna i z przekazem. Do teraz nie rozumiem, jak to się stało. Jak można połączyć te wszystkie cechy w jedną, niepozornych rozmiarów książkę.

Khayalan hanya berharga apabila dipertahankan sebagai khayalan. Kembali ke tempat yang pernah menyembuhkan luka-lukamu bukan cara yang tepat untuk melangkah maju. Orang yang masih percaya pada sihir dari masa kecil tidak akan bisa tumbuh dewasa."

Wizard Bakery menurutku adalah salah satu bacaan ringan, namun penuh makna. Dalam buku ini, kita dapat melihat berbagai pelanggan dan jenis kue yang dibuat menurut sifat-sifat manusia—serakah, ambisius, keinginan membunuh, ketakutan, dan kecemasan. Menarik lagi, bahwa buku ini terasa seperti genre coming of age dari anak laki-laki sebagai tokoh utama.

Ia yang tadinya begitu berpikir pendek, tidak memahami cara kerja dunia karena pengalaman masa kecil yang buruk, perlahan-lahan mulai memahami karakter-karakter manusia dengan mengamati Tukang Roti yang ajaib itu. Trata sobre un chico huérfano de madre, y cómo su vida familiar se vuelve insoportable cuando su padre se vuelve a casar con la maestra Be. Una mujer que al principio parecía buena, pero resultó ser un ser insufrible.

Para librarse de las cenas familiares y convivir lo menos posible con su disfuncional familia, a pesar de no ser el gran fan de los panes, éste chico visitaba con mucha frecuencia la panadería cerca de su casa. Una panadería que abría las 24 horas todos los días de la semana. Ésta era atendida por una chica amable que trataba siempre a los clientes con respeto. Y el dueño, el panadero, era un hombre gruñón y cascarrabias que normalmente trata a sus clientes de forma hosca y grosera.

Una noche su vida familiar se vuelve aún más imposible y se ve en la necesidad de salir corriendo de su casa, y el único lugar en el que piensa es en la panadería. Con la ayuda de la chica amable, logra que el panadero le de alojo por un tiempo, hasta que las aguas en su casa se calmen, aunque el chico no veía el día en que eso pasaría. Y es así cómo se da cuenta que la panadería es algo más fantástico que simples panes.

Es un libro juvenil, pero siento que es en realidad una historia para personas más maduras ya que toca temas bastante fuertes, y diálogos un tanto crudos. Yo recomiendo que cada quién lo lea y decida si es apto para un joven. Ahora bien, sobre el libro... es muy bueno. La historia se me hizo bastante original y me gustó mucho cómo fue descrito todo por la autora, y cómo desarrolló la historia según los panes que el panadero vendía.

He leído muy poco realismo mágico, pero éste me gustó bastante. La idea de encontrar magia en algo tan mundano como una panadería me fascinó. Además que da ejemplos claros de "Ten cuidado con lo que deseas porque se puede convertir en realidad" ya que en muchos casos, la magia de los panes traía fuertes y grandes consecuencias.

Lo que no me gustó fue su simplicidad, siento que se pudo desarrollar una historia un poco más compleja y completa, darle un crecimiento o desarrollo a los personajes un poco más a detalle. Pero en sí, es mi única queja. Siempre las historias cortas me quedan debiendo un poquito más (bueno, en la mayoría de los casos, no siempre). Y eso pasó con ésta. Me quedé con ganas de un poquito más.

En fin, como ya dije, lo recomiendo a discreción de los mayores el dárselo a leer a un niño. Pero a adolescentes y adultos siento les gustaría por igual. Nos ayudaría a estar un poco más afines con nuestra imaginación.

Sama nie wiem co myśleć o tej książce. Nie takich rzeczy oczekiwałam.

Spodziewałam się bardziej fantastyki, a to taki magiczny realizm, gdzie magii w sumie nie ma aż tak wiele. O wiele bardziej skupia się na prawdziwym życiu.

Jest dosyć mroczna. Ale takim mrokiem prawdziwego świata.

Zawsze jak czytam takie rzeczy to zastanawiam się czy w Korei jest tak źle, czy to jak polskie filmy, gdzie zawsze jest pełno patologii. Ta sytuacja ze stacją i zachowania ludzi były straszne. Zresztą jak większość.

Chronologia trochę skacze. Mam wrażenie, że taki zabieg nie był konieczny i lekko irytował.

Było to coś innego. Wiele trudnych tematów, a historię czytało się szybko.

Poziom patologii i krzywd w tej książce był ogromny.

Wolałabym więcej o magii piekarni i jakiegoś zbudowania relacji z bohaterami tam. Wszystko było takie oschłe.

3.5⭐️ The way that this book is designed and marketed as a ‘whimsical’ ’coming-of-age’ story to be compared with other Korean ‘healing fiction’ novels is completely misleading and off the mark.

The English translation of The Wizard’s Bakery is being promoted as though it’ll be a cosy, whimsical read with cute chapter illustrations, when in reality, it explores the horrors of sexual assault, rape, suicide, domestic violence and in particular, paedophilia - not to mention in graphic detail.

I think if you ignore the cute cover and title and blurb and know that you’re getting yourself into a VERY dark novel, then you’ll be able to appreciate the writing. But I felt that the actual content was so different from the poorly marketed promises of a cosy magical realism that it was hard to stomach and digest the story.

Buku Bergenre Fantasi ini cukup membuat saya ketagihan ketika membacanya. Wizard Bakery yang umumnya seperti toko roti biasa, menyimpan resep & manfaat keajaiban dari setiap nama rotinya. Seorang anak yang kabur dari rumahnya pun secara tidak sengaja tinggal di toko roti yang penuh keajaiban ini. Pemiliknya pun orang yang cukup misterius dan sangat galak, dengan ditemani oleh seorang anak perempuan.

Buku ini menyampaikan pesan-pesan yang pada dasarnya mengarahkan bahwa setiap manusia memang memiliki hati & pikiran yang jahat, apalagi saat diberi kekuatan / kekuasaan magic.
Kesederhanaan bahasa dan makna nya cukup mendalam pada setiap bab yang tertera. Sejujurnya, saya kurang puas dengan endingnya, karena kurang memberikan gambaran yang jelas. Overall, buku ini layak sekali untuk dibaca khususnya bagi yang menyukai fantasi. Selamat membaca kawan dan terhisap dalam dunia pemilik roti.
