Paddington #11.9

Paddington Goes to Hospital

Rate this book
Oh, no! Paddington Bear has hurt his arm, and he's having trouble remembering just how it happened. The Browns are worried enough to take Paddington on his first trip to the hospital. From the moment he arrives on a stretcher with wheels, which he thinks is "very good value:' to the end of his overnight stay, Paddington takes it all in with curiosity and wonderment ... along with a little apprehension! But the kind nurses and doctors, and even the patients themselves, help Paddington see that the hospital isn't as scary a place as it first seems. At the end of this gentle, reassuring story, Paddington's arm is set straight and so is Paddington when he discovers that even the hospital food isn't as bad as he thought it would be!

For over forty years, Paddington Bear has charmed young readers with his earnest intentions and humorous misadventures. Now Michael Bond's new stories, with warm, charming illustrations by R. W. Alley, bring this classic character into the hearts of another generation of fans.

My kids think this is the best Paddington story they have ever read. I must have read this a hundred times already. A five star rating because despite the rereads, even I’m not tired of the story.

Charming Paddington book! This book takes something that can be very scary and makes it very accessible. It is sweet and sensitive and beautifully illustrated.

Much like Curious George Goes to the Hospital, Paddington discovers the staff are very helpful and make him feel better, and going to the hospital doesn't have to be quite so scary.

Not the best of Paddington

My son enjoyed this book, though kept asking questions during and after the story. I think that's because the story seems to use more complicated language than other Paddington stories and starts after Paddington's accident. The subsequent evolution of the story in hospital leads us to find out what happened to Paddington before the book began but the nonlinear timeline is hard for the younger Paddington fans to follow.

A very sweet little story.

"I can see why they are called patients," said Paddington. "Some of them must have to wait a very long time before they get better."

This is a larger sized and fully illustrated book for children and the young at heart adult to read. The illustrations are so cute and fun to look at which was my motivation for reading them in the first place! Paddington is adorable in this series of books for kids who are advancing with their reading.

Paddington has been playing out in the garden but an accident has happened, leaving the poor bear with no memory of who he is or what happened to him. He also has a dislocated shoulder which needs treatment. Oh the poor wee bear! He looks so sad and pathetic in the illustrations! Perhaps Mr Brown needs a rethink on suitable things to give Paddington to play with...

While I never had to stay a whole day or longer in a hospital, I did have to spend hours in an emergency room bed for epileptic seizures. That was just as scary! So in a way, I was able to relate to how Paddington felt having to stay in a hospital.

A charming addition to the canon that made me wish so much to go to hospital when I was small. It all looked so interesting.

(It's still super interesting.)
