A must read for any European citizen, the true vision of one of the European Union founding fathers. Very different from we are being told by politicians and media. And also an amazing story as Monnet's life was not ordinary

My first boss told me about Jean Monnet and his European Iron and Steel idea back in the late 70's while working in Paris for a French client. A newly minted MBA and some travel to France circa 1975-78 exposed me to the initial rustlings of a burgeoning European community. Monnet's memoirs describes the process that brought the small kernel of the idea of a European solution to development and continued peace thru its baby steps as the Franco-German Coal project to its eventual structure as the European Common Market and finally to the EU that many have grown to hate in the past 20 years. What is so important about Monnet's memoirs is its raw connection to the devastation that was post WW II Europe and his passionate commitment to make sure another conflict did not arise. His proposed solution is now accepted as the conventional wisdom that nations that are economically connected and inter dependent don't fight wars against each other. This rather novel or even naive idea survived many obstacles and is generally accepted and applauded as a major factor in Europe's recovery and economic success. The Memoirs, along with Tony Judt's "Postwar" should be required reading for anyone seeking to understand how Europe got from a burned out Berlin to the global leader it is today.
I just realized that this book has sat on my shelves for almost 30 years since I read it as a young man trying to gain a better understanding of how one men's vision, commitment and courage of his convictions could really change the reality of hundreds of millions of his fellow European citizens.

Ghost-written, but extraordinarily resourceful to understand the foundations of modern-day EU politics and western politics at large.

Persujen kannattaisi lukea kirja. Saisivat hyvin tukea historiasta väitteilleen federalistisesta eu-projektista, jonka tarkoitus on luovuttaa suvereniteettia pois kansallisvaltioita ja jossa tärkeätä ovat osaavat virkamiehet, jotka esityksillään ohjaavat kansallisia päättäjiä haluamaansa suuntaan.
