From the pages of the UK's award-winning, infamous music newspaper, The Stool Pigeon, come Krent Able's mind-blowing, appallingly hilarious and beautifully drawn rock-star abusing comic strips, gathered together for the first time. Featuring exclusive new comics and illustrations, join the dashing and hirsute Mr Able as he takes a chainsaw to the icons of music. Including Lou Reed's trouble with monkeys! Johnny Cash in drug-related impotence shocker! Kraftwerk sadly miniaturised and toasted! Lilly Allen crushed by Satan! The Beach Boys return from beyond the grave!
I first registered Krent Able's name when he did a collaborative book with the wonderfully unsound Skaky Kane - and yes, the title probably did come first, but it was still a fun, creepy read. So when I saw this going cheap I thought I might as well have a go. Turned out I had probably seen some of it before, as this is a collection of strips from music freesheet the Stool Pigeon. Oh, I've not seen that around lately, thinks I - was it another casualty of the Event? Turns out it ceased publication in 2013. Dear gods we're old. And, at least as regards the cartoon, that's probably a good thing, because this early Able work is shite. Now, I need to be careful to get my point across here, because it's one of the sneaky tricks of the resurgent puritanism, isn't it, not to openly admit to being scared or shocked (and certainly not uneasily fascinated) by outrageous material, and instead to affect a blasé pose, the cool vicar as older brother, and claim that it's 'boring' - not like all this groovy and morally righteous material I've got for you here, kids! So to be clear, there's lots of transgressive comedy I like, even some 'you couldn't print nowadays'. But these specific strips really are quite dull. Lady Gaga has a big snake willy! Lou Reed is fucking a monkey! Nick Cave is bumming a dog! With the right development or suitable comic timing, these ideas might have been good for a shocked chuckle at the audacity, but here they just plop down on to the page with a puerile assumption that that'll be enough. And I can't even do the usual and drop a disappointment off at a station book swap shelf for fear someone might mistakenly grab this for a kid and then insist the whole facility be shut down.
This book was a gift - and an excellent one at that.
If you enjoy the world of music (especially alternative), you may want to indulge in this bizarre menagerie of Able's world.
Able's mind is so malleable and twisted, it is hard not to enjoy each "tasting" since one never knows where he will take us.
The illustrations are amazing and detailed, the stories have been derived from a fever dream during some sort of neurological explosion, and the end result is this comprehensive mix of madness.
Absolutely fantastic on all levels and a must for those who appreciate something a whole lot different from the formulaic trash out there.
After scoring this book in the GoodReads giveaway, I am tempted to give this book top rating, considering that I have never won anything ever before. I had never heard of Krent before reading this book and after reading this book, doubt I will ever read another of his again. Krent Able’s Big Book of Mischief is a compilaton of Krent's comic strip from the music magazine Stool Pigeon.
This book is vile and so graphic that I still keep this book in my bock drawer. But from someone who had tried to sit down and draw, I can attest that writing/illustrating a graphic novel requires a lot of willpower and patience to be good at it and this book is good in that sense. And it is hilarious if you are into pop stars and the like. Unfortunately I do not connect with the pop icon universe and was unable to enjoy this book.
If you like to see Satan sit down on Lily Allen and Lou Reed getting it on with monkeys, this book is definitely for you. Other victims of the caricature ride are Courtney Love, Amy Winehouse, Johnny Cash, Iggy Pop, 50 Cent, Timberlake, Lily Allen, Brian Wilson, Pete Doherty, the Beach Boys Kraftwerk and Morrissey, Lady Gaga. If depicting your sense of humour does not contain genitalia, excrement, dismemberment, bestiality, arseholes and body fluids of all flavours known to man, then this book is neither for you nor – I would suggest – your parents.
I wanted to give this book 3 1/2 stars, but I marked it up as the illustrations were really well done, and the quality of the book itself was fantastic. If you like gruesome comics with lots of willies, you'll like this book. I'm not the biggest fan, and struggled a bit as it seems a bit senseless (I would have loved this book a few years ago, however my tastes have matured). I did find I enjoyed the comics toward the end of the book much more, they were a little more tame.
Overall though the illustration was beautiful, Able has real talent, just a bit twisted for my tastes now Although I did enjoy seeing Lady GaGas penis, I knew it existed!
I won this on a good reads giveway, and I'm pleased I did, I already have a few friends asking to borrow it :)
this book was well written and made but at the end of the day it was just too much for me. there was a lot of nasty stuff and by the end I was hoping for an eye replacement. I will admit that i was still entertained and I could not put the book down.
Received this as an unexpected giveaway. This graphic novel is completely sick - if you like pornography, shit, nudity, vicious lampoons of musicians, dark humor that isn't funny, then this is the book for you.
