Discover how to weave an in-depth understanding of the Common Core into successful classroom practice with this two-part resource. Included are hundreds of ready-to-use, research-based proficiency scales for both English language arts and mathematics.
There were no new ideas in this book. Much of it was basic pedagogy and all of the proficiency scales are available online. Some of the ideas were verbatim from professional development sessions when our staff was being trained on the Marzano model. The Core Curriculum State Standards have a lot of merit but do not require much beyond the guideposts that have always been integral to my goals in the classroom. The fact that the book concentrates on both Math and English Language Arts made it even less useful.
Marzano and his team provide an organizational tool for teachers trying to implement the Common Core. It seemed a bit overwhelming at first, but any one teacher is only going to use the corresponding grade levels. Also, one needs to take time to read Part I to understand the organization and terms used. I can't comment on the math content, as I don't teach math, but I would think the organization of the material would be helpful as both math and writing for a specific standard are discussed together. I used this book as part of a graduate level course about writing and the Common Core. It was helpful when identifying standards for various lessons. It will be useful in the future when developing lessons and units.
This book provided a wealth of information as we began the work of unpacking standards and writing proficiency scales. The provided scales help springboard conversations among teachers. The chapters provided me with another bit of knowledge about Common Core standards. An excellent teacher resource for common formative assessments based on proficiency scales.
