This intermediate, modular approach to German grammar serves as both reference handbook and practice manual. The organization of the 30 chapters allows instructors to teach sequentially or in modules, as each chapter is self-contained and can be used in any order. The chapter structure provides a presentation of new information, followed by material for oral and written practice: Grammatik (grammar), Worschatz (vocabulary), Übungen (exercises, self-, and small-group practice), Anwendung (application, in-class group activities), Schriftliche Themen (writing topics), and Zusammenfassung (summary).
The progress I've made studying this book in one month by myself is equivalent to the year I spent in a German school. It has also been a perfect supplement to fill the gaps and reinforce what I have already acquired in school. Since I started learning German, I've read dozens of books, lectures, and short stories. However, I have yet to find a book that explains the German grammar in depth and deals with its irregularities and usage in such a thorough and detailed manner quite like this one. Keep in mind that the book is only suitable for learners at the intermediate and advanced levels and it states so right in the introduction.
For the English-speaking learner of German, this book is a must have resource. I found its explanation of concepts of grammar especially useful, much more so than the textbook we studied. If I had any difficulty with new grammar as we were using the textbook, I would locate the related chapter in this book and read it carefully. It explains everything so much better and more clearly than our college textbook. This book also includes many examples, often using current popular culture themes. I find it indispensable in my study of the German language.
