MacDonell Brides #4

My Immortal Protector

Rate this book
From acclaimed author Jen Holling comes the captivating and sensual story of Deidra MacKay, a reluctant witch who would do anything to give up her powers -- until she meets a darkly handsome man who may give her reason to use them...

A fiery witch able to communicate with animals, Deidra MacKay longs to relinquish her powers -- they bring her nothing but misfortune and danger. So when she learns that years ago, her ancestors signed a blood pact with a vampire, cursing the MacKay clan with witchcraft, she presumes that a member of the undead can also take her magic away. So she embarks on a quest to find the one who can hopefully ease her misery.

An embittered and crippled Scotsman, Stephen Ross lives as a recluse -- hiding from the world in a dreary castle. But when the intriguing and adorable Deidra arrives at his door hoping he is a vampire, he is intoxicated and aroused by her company. He joins her on her journey, hoping a vampire's magic might also heal his wounds -- and soon finds himself enraptured in the heat of passion with Deidra, an affair that could put both their lives at stake.

Living with a supernatural power she never asked for and doesn't want, Deidra Mackay is desperate to be normal. The small but mighty Deidra can converse with the animals, but she no longer interested in what they have to say. In a last ditch effort to rid herself of her curse, she decides to leave and visit her uncle. She knows he has a connection to a powerful witch known as the baobhan sith- a blood witch- and she's hoping this witch can take away her magic.

But before she reaches her Uncle's castle, she decides to see Stephen Ross- an old acquaintance rumored to be a blood witch himself...

Living as a recluse because of a debilitating injury he suffered long ago, the handsome Stephen Ross is instantly charmed by the odd woman who shows up on his doorstep one night. He decides to join her on her quest to find the blood witch- because he's in need of a little healing himself.

Things become more complicated when the dark-hearted Luthias- a witch hunter obsessed with catching Deidra while practicing her art and burning her at the stake- picks up her trail soon after she leaves her parents' home. He'll stop at nothing to capture the allusive girl- and this time he's determined she won't escape.

An intriguing plot in a romance sub-genre glutted with Vampire tales, My Immortal Protector takes the wildly popular setting of the historical Scottish Highlands and spins an otherwise captivating tale of danger and romance with characters as unique as they are charming.

The hero is crippled from back pain and the heroine is afraid of her own powers- so much so, she runs from them! You don't often get authors willing to make their characters appear weak- in form nor spirit- but Hollings goes there, managing to make them not only believable in an unbelievable setting, but likable. By the end of the tale, both characters win us over when they discover their strengths, daring, and their willingness to sacrifice for each other.

Whearas I consider this a good read I wouldn't classify as one of my favs simply because I couldn't quite get a grasp on the inner workings of the Hero, and in end- not one for my keeper shelf.

Didn't particularly enjoy this book. Both the hero and heroine were extremely irritating at times. She's a witch who can communicate with animals born into a lineage of witches. Her father is a strong healer. She is hanted by a witch-hunter who blames her for his fierce desire for her. The hero was crippled when he took a bullet to the back while trying to save a friend. He resents her efforts to care for him. They both think a visit to a vampire can help with their problems.

You can likely figure out the tale from here...I did.

I have never been this enamored with an author since Jude Deveraux and Julie Garwood first introduced me to historical romance novels. Now that I have discovered Jen Holling's historical/paranormal romance novels I can't get enough. Continuing on with characters from the MacDonell Brides trilogy, My Immortal Protector was a book I couldn't put down and I have already started on her next one in the series, My Immortal Promise. The only thing that saddens me is how fast I read the books because I don't want the stories to end!

Tato kniha by se měla jmenovat "Jak zoslit knihu v posledních 30 stránkách". Očkeání jsem neměla žádné a on ten příběh vlastně hezky plynul. Inu smr, kam se děj nakonec ubral mi vlemi nevyhovoval a celkově zkazil dojem z celé vlastně i docela nadějné zápletky.

Jesus Christ, Jen Holling. The ending was hit after hit after hit– though I do wish there had been more after what's the current end of the book with their story because it felt... unfinished in some ways.

Really enjoyed this read! Didn’t realize it was a series. Just happened to be in a pile of books I picked up thrifting. Now diving deep into the rest of the series. If you are a Kerrelyn Sparks fan, you will enjoy.

“My Immortal Protector” (MacDonell Brides #4) Jen Holling Scottish highlands 1597, as a child, Deidra turned her back on her power to talk to animals to try to get a witch hunter to forget about her. He hasn’t and is growing bolder to stand against her powerful family of healers. Now she is on the run with a crippled man in tow, seeking a blood witch who might be able to lift her magic, but can she survive the trip. Fun romance type novel.

I despise the cover on this. It is admittedly, the worst of any of her covers. I received this book as a "freebie" thrown in with a swap I was getting online from one of my fav swapping sites. Otherwise, I probably NEVER would have picked it up. Despite that, the back was interesting enough to get me to open it up and the first chapter had me hooked.
It starts with witches. A young girl, who can commune with animals, but does not appreciate, nor fully use her gift and her two "healing witch" parents. There is a zealous nut case who is determined to hunt and burn all witches, especially this young girl. I have to admit, I hope he makes an additional appearance in the next book. I enjoyed the peek I got into his mind in this one, and I'd love an updated peek after the end of this book.
I didn't realize this was part of a series, until I was finished with it. It was fine to read alone, though there were a few things such as Hannah's mention of her name "it's too long a story" that makes me wonder if said story is in another book of it's own. Also, as a read alone the ending was disappointing. Only because there were a few things pieces of the story left dangling. Like the zealous, we see what happens to him in the end, but we don't really get to know how that worked out for him. Also Hannah, who barely gets an introduction, makes a deal that I don't recall even seeing the specifics of in this book, only to lead seemingly nowhere. There is some consolation to be found however, because there was an into to the next book and the first chapter. Making it clear that we get more Hannah info in that book. Which I've already ordered.
The other thing I found disappointing, was that, though technically this book has 'vampires' we really don't get to read much about them. They sound like a rather unique take on vampires too, so I'm looking forward to additional info from the rest of the series.
The witch stuff was fascinating, since I've always enjoyed witch 'trials'.

My Immortal Protector by Jen Holling is placed about 12 years after her "Brides of the Bloodstone Trilogy". I loved the trilogy and I love this new installment even more so. A light quick read you are sure to enjoy so don't miss out.

Diedra MacKay is a witch who talks to animals. She understands them and they understand her, but her fear of persecution makes her build a wall in her mind to block them out. Slight of build, pretty, smart, determined and cursed as she sees it, she needs to find a "baobhan sith" to break the curse no matter what the cost.

Stephen Ross is a broken man. Crippled from a gun shot to the back he suffers terrible pain and so lives his life as a recluse. Rich and handsome with a upper body strength of a normal man, he is constantly reminded of how weak he is because of his lower body restrictions. He never expects to find the love of a good woman so when Diedra shows up at his door to find out about the blood witch, Stephen listens intently. Unfortunately he knows nothing of them but is willing to help Diedra seek one out and he will to do anything it takes to become a whole man again.

The "baobhan sith" is a blood witch or better known as a vampire. The blood witch must drink blood when hunger sets in which is only on the full moon each month. Able to be in sunlight although it weakens her she is still able to function among the normal villagers.

Diedra and Stephen are chased across the Highlands of Scotland by a witch pricker with an obsession for Diedra. The witch pricker has waited 12 long years for the opportunity to get what he needs for proof so that he can finally watch the witch burn at the stake. Will he get the proof? Read and find out.

The author does a wonderful job of taking a story about witches and turns it into a life and death story to find vampires. The rolling of one into the other is fantastic. Jen Holling is an author to be reckoned with and won't disappoint you in the least.

As far as vampire/witch romance novels go, I have to give the writer props in that this is very much not your average love story. The storyline begins in late 1500's Scotland and combines the ideaology of a maniacal witchhunter hellbent on proving the lead character of the book is a witch; which technically he's right because her whole family including herself are comprived of witches; and the story of a loner crippled scotsman who apparently took a bullet in his back and has been an invalid ever since, despite many an attempt to heal him. The witch and the cripple join forces in search of a way to solve both their problems and wind up falling in love. - yada yada yada. Now given all these supernatural hooks, one would think there simply isn't any room for vampires - wrong! The reason the main heroine's family is all witches is because long ago, a family member made a pact with a vampire (called a boabhan sith in the story) and somehow, a blood sucker making a pact with a mortal creates powerful results? Who knows! So the witch and the cripple go off in search of the vampire with the witch hunter hot on their trail. The end result involves some rather gruesome methods of death on the witch's and witch hunter's part. Naturally, the story ends with the witch, the cripple AND the witch hunter becoming vampires. So I guess you could say its a kinda happy ending? The bad guy gets to know what its like to be tortured and etc. and the witch can live happily ever after as a bloodsucker with her man. Personally I think there was too much drama and supernaturalality thrown into 300 pages - but it kept me entertained.

Most vampire stories begin with the person changing to a vampire (if they’re going to) at the beginning of the story, which then deals with how they react to becoming one, and learn to deal with it. In this book, most of the story is the lead up to becoming a vampire. The heroine is a “witch” who can hear animals. The animals know it, and treat her as a sort of “super pack leader,” gathering around her and begging her to pay attention to them. This earns her the attention of a witch hunter. (The book is set at the height of the witch-hunting era.) Her parents, who have healing powers, are able to protect her from the hunter, but she doesn’t want her powers. She’s heard stories of a blood sidhe who gave her family their magic, so she’s hoping another one will rid her of it. She goes to visit the hero, because she thinks he might be one, or know one—and because his home seems to be a safe haven from the witch hunter. But he doesn’t know. He was crippled in an accident years ago, and he decides to go with her to find this blood sidhe. I thought the heroine was a little whiny with her “I don’t want this magic,” though Holling did a pretty good job with motivating her. The story kept me interested, and all in all, it was a good read.

A witch that can talk with animals, a gift she hates and tries to block from her life. An evil man that considers himself a servant of god hunts her and burns "witches" through out Scotland. He has hunted and taunted her since she was twelve, she can't live with the constant fear. She searches for the mythical Blood Witch, who may be able to remove her "curse". She travels far and meets up with a drunken handsome crippled man (in more ways than one) from her childhood that will change her life. They embark on a journey filled with terrors, triumphs and awakening hearts.
I picked this book up at a book sale not knowing the author. I am so glad I did I found the story engaging and was unable to put it down. It is a light quick read with "real" characters.

The hero, crippled with terrible back pain after his spine healed crooked spends his life proving that he is a capable, if not whole, man. The heroine started out just a spoiled whiny girl. She even leaves the poor guy behind in the woods one night because she thought he would have problems keeping up with her. But as the story went on you could tell that she went from pitying him to loving him. When the hero died after being tortured, I cried right along with her. My only objection was how many times the villain could have been killed and they let the chances pass by. The heroine wouldn't have had to become a vampire if they'd have just killed the bastard.

When will I ever learn, books I buy at library sales "strictly for trading" usually get read in a hurry once they are requested *g*.

The cover alone makes it darn near impossible to mail out without a quick read.

A good paranormal romance featuring witches (good witches) and a mean, violent witch hunter. Being an animal lover I enjoyed that the heroine was able to communicate with animals.

I'd read more by this author.

This book was a perfect example of a main character who is always acted upon, instead of taking action. Which is super annoying. This girl had the opportunity, numerous times, to affect change but instead of using any of those instances, the author chose to have her restrained/knocked unconscious/drugged. By the end, she hadn't really done anything. All decisions (both minor and super-major) were made for her by other characters. Also, the sex was both sparing and mundane.

Overall the book was just an OK read. The lead gal really got on my nerves and I didn't find the lead guy appealing. Many times, I was shaking my head at actions she took. I never read this author before and probably will not again based on this book.

P.S. This is one of those books that the cover doesn't match what's described in the book.

Yeah the story just ended flat. So disappointed in the end. So he knew nothing when he changed, but somehow she knew alot?? Such crap. I wasn't thrilled that Stephen became a vampire or Diedra either. That could have been just left out. I am excited to see what happens with the witch hunter in the next book. I hope he is hunted constantly.
