Susan Middleton Elya is the author of many books that cleverly incorporate Spanish vocabulary into lively verse. She is originally from Iowa and now lives in Northern California.
Overall, I thought this book would be hard for a student reading by their self. The book contains small sentences that are in English with keywords in Spanish. For a child that knows how to read both languages, this book would be great for them, but if they do not, they may not understand the words. I think that underneath each word should be the other language's translation. This would be beneficial because then children who speak Spanish that are learning to read English and vice versa will be able to understand and compare the words in both languages. The pictures throughout the story may help the child figure out what the words mean in Spanish but some words are still hard to figure out.
Say Hola to Spanish at the Circus is a fun, inventive story that teaches kids Spanish vocabulary related to the circus. The illustrations are fun, and the circus is lively and visually interesting. The Spanish words are all accompanied by images that help to pair the word with the object or subject, which helps the reader learn quickly.
This book incorporates basic Spanish into a circus setting, while explaining what the words mean. This is a book that I might have a Spanish speaking student help me read to the class, and let them talk about language and culture. Otherwise, it is a fun book that any class would be interested in!
This book is great to read if your doing a unit over Mexico. The students could use this book to point out the "m" sounds and the "p" sounds. Giving the students a card with the letters "m" and "p" would be a great way to check for understanding.
This book is a good bilingual book. Its taking place at the circus, the illustrations connect with the text. It also rhymes! The rhyming of this book is what gives it the laughs and giggles because of the way the text is written. I think its a good selection for a multicultural book.
This book incorporates basic Spanish into a circus setting, while explaining with illustrations what the words mean. It would be a wonderful source for a Spanish lesson, or unit on Mexico.
This book talks about the different objects and animals that are at the circus using Spanish and English. This is a good book to use when you are teaching Spanish to younger children.
I love reading books which contain foreign language vocabulary. I love even more when the book gives you the proper pronunciation for the foreign words, which this book does at the end.
Every child loves the circus, so why not have a book with the setting of a circus? That way, the child is engaged and wanting to learn what the book has to say.
