Dancing with the Duke is a short prequel novella to the Landing a Lord series.
She's loved him for years... Charlotte Grant can't remember a time when she didn't love her best friend's older brother.
He's never noticed her... The Duke of Clarington hadn't spared a thought for his sister's friend in years.
Their situations are about to be reversed... It is the beginning of a new Season and Clarington intends to stay away from all the young ladies and eager mamas hoping to ensnare a duke. But that plan falls into tatters when his mother sponsors his sister's friend and enlists him to dance with her at Almack's. The beautiful vixen he meets that night bears little resemblance to the shy, gangly girl who used to follow him around. Now, instead of avoiding Charlotte, he finds himself frustrated when she seems to notice everyone but him.
BONUS: Includes the first chapter of Loving the Marquess.
USA Today bestselling author Suzanna Medeiros was born and raised in Toronto, Canada. Her love of reading led her to pursue a degree in English Literature from the University of Toronto. After working at a number of interesting places, including a federal inquiry, a youth probation office, and the Office of the Fire Marshal of Ontario, she decided to pursue her first love—writing.
Suzanna is married to her own hero and survived raising twins. When she isn't writing, she loves reading and playing video games.
She would like to thank her parents for showing her that love at first sight and happily ever after really do exist.
This novella wasn't as good as Dear Stranger. I liked both characters separately but somehow I didn't like them together. The heroine was just a bit too pushy and the H was a tad bland. The heroine's best friend ( H's sister ) was the stereotypical, annoying bff who just can't stfu and be normal. I guess I've kinda become impatient with novels/novellas where the heroine's bff seems to have swallowed an entire bottle of energy pills.
Ok, it was free but very short. Suppose I shouldn't complain as it was an introduction to a new series. Would I be rushing out to buy the next one - not sure!
This is a book with so much promise, but doesn't deliver. Miss Medeiros is an excellent writer. She has an amazing way with words and a setting. I enjoyed reading the book up until they met for like the second time and jumped into bed in about the third chapter and declared their love for one another.
I could even accept this scene MUCH later in the book. But by having it so early it makes the hero an impulsive, uncaring jerk. A man who cared about Charlotte would make an effort to protect her reputation as opposed to jumping on her like a hungry dog on a juicy steak. The reader hasn't fallen in love with him. All the reader knows is he's a duke, ridicules girls at the party, and his sister is Charlotte's friend. His statement about how he feels about her rings false. He barely remembered her a couple of days ago.
Later, after the reader gets to know Alex and finds some redeeming things about him the reader would be more ready to fall in love with Alex. This is a regency, which meant every girl who hoped to marry well had to protect her reputation. Charlotte shows inappropriate responses, she should worry or protest a little.
Then the fact the two culminate their relationship really makes the book end right there. It is rather like being told the butler did it before the inspector even shows up.
I have high hopes for this author, and would be glad to read future books.
Alex, The Duke of Clarington is in the worst place possible... Almack's at the beginning of the season, all do to a promise he made with his mother and sister to have one dance with his sister's best friend, Charlotte, to launch her into society. Its been 7 years since Alex has last seen Charlotte Grant, who was gangly, always blushing around him, and stuttering every time she spoke to him. But when she is announced and walks in with his mother and sister, he doesn't recognize the women standing there... Charlotte has always been in love with Alex ever since she met him. Lack the confidence to make it known to him since she was but a teenager. But now that she was older she gains the confidence to finally see if she can get him to look her way, along with his sister's help...
This was a good start to the "Landing a Lord" series. I always had a weakness' stories when they new each other since they were younger and when the heroine has been in love with hero ever since. I really liked how after Alex realizes his feelings for Charlotte that he wanted to court her openly in society. And though Charlotte was a little fast in jumping to conclusions about situations that came up during their relationship progress, it added a touch of reality to the relationship when you think that she has been in love with Alex since she was 15 and who wouldn't have some insecurities when things seem to good to be true. I was a little disappointed that it was really short and I wished there was a little more to Alex and Charlotte story. I wished the author went into more detail about Alex's friends and also had them a little bit more involved in the story. As well as Alex's mother, and though Lucy, Alex's sister, was a little bit more involved, after all she is Charlotte's best friend and partner in crime. For a novella, it was written really well. Though I wish there was more to their story, the author did a good job in having the story flow really well. She didn't leave you hanging and have some areas dragging. All in all it was a good novella, and it has made me interested in the other books in the series.
Now like with all novellas I read my biggest criticism is the length and how I wish it would be longer. This one was no exception, and I felt in this case that the lack of length didn't do the story enough justice. The storyline was there and had so much potential that I think if it was a full length story I would have loved it. There could have been more development, more angst, more anticipation, and just more believablity to the story.
I don't believe for one second that Alex had suddenly fell madly in love with Charlotte after just recently making love. It was too quick. Was he beginning to care for her? Yes. Were his feelings beginning to change for her? Yes absolutely. But was he deeply in love with her like she was with him? No. There needed to be time in between the love making and the love confession scene? It just needed to be built upon and grown over time which would have gone well in the full length environment. It would have been so good and complicated and emotional just everything that a romance is meant to have in its story. It was a really rushed story between Alex and Charlotte.
With that being said I did really enjoy the elements in this story. I liked the premise of Charlotte being in love with her best friend's brother, Alex for years and years and came into London with the intent of getting him while Alex was completely clueless of her plans and feelings, and feelings he never returned. I love this type of theme because there just so much hiding beneath the surface that needs to be explored and always is lingering. Plus I like the fact that a relationship is established between the pair before so it brings a necessary edge to the story. That was the same with Alex and Charlotte. I could feel how deep her feelings ran for Alex and just how much she wanted him while Alex was realizing that she wasn't a little kid anymore and was in fact a woman he was attracted too. Plus he was denied his feelings and kept going back and forth, which is always fun too. It created the necessary tension in the story, which was needed due to it being a novella.
I really enjoyed the passion between these two because it was very raw and very hot. It was like they had been waiting for years for those passionate moments, and for her it was true while he was just discovering his passion for her. I was surprised that there was a full blown love scene, glad there was, being that this was a novella. I was expecting more of a fade to black scene, which there wasn't and I was ever so grateful. This scene needed to happen not only to establish their physical connection but their connection in general that they indeed had something there between them. Like I said above I wish there was some time after their first time to the confession scene, but I wasn't disappointed all that built up sexual tension and connection from that point to the end of the book. Plus it was just a really good and sexy scene. Love it.
I wish this story was longer and more could have been explored between Alex and Charlotte's romance, but aside from that I liked it. I liked the storyline. I liked the characters. I liked the live scene. I just wanted to believe a little bit more that Alex was in fact as deeply in love as she was. Again length would have done wonders for that, but it was novella. I was a good quick read, which was what I wanted for the moment, but then wished it longer because I wanted so much more.

Cute little novella. A little cliche, but fun none the less. I enjoyed it, will prolly continue with the series to see how the author does with longer books
This is a novella, evidently to be the teaser for a series to follow. The problem is, I'm not sure I was particularly teased. The story seemed a little flat to me.
Alex (the titular duke) has agreed to dance at Almacks with his sister's good friend Charlotte. He remembers Charlotte as a gangly, freckly, orange-haired girl who had an awkward crush on him, but he'll do his good deed for the evening and then make himself scarce.
Lo and behold, the ugly duckling is now a swan. The hair has toned itself down to a nice auburn, the freckles are still there but now they're charming. She's much more confident, and therefore appealing. And now she's much less interested—which makes her much more interesting.
You take it from there. This is the entire story—there are no spoilers to be spoiled. So would I read on in the series? I don't think so, even though the next book is available for $2.99, and even though the teaser suggests there'll be a bit more dramatic tension. It's an early book from an indie author, so maybe I'll try another of her books a few years from now.
I know novellas are supposed to be short but I've never read such a short novella as DANCING WITH THE DUKE. If it had been longer I would've enjoyed it a lot more. :/
I found this a good book. Charlotte and Alex have good chemistry and have a good relationship from when they were children but can that translate to an adult relationship.
Charlotte Grant can’t remember a time when she didn’t love her best friend Lucy’s older brother. Alexander Thompson, The Duke of Clarington hadn’t spared a thought for his sister’s friend in years. It is the beginning of a new Season and Clarington intends to stay away from all the young ladies and eager mamas hoping to ensnare a duke. But that plan falls into tatters when his mother sponsors his sister’s friend and enlists him to dance with her at Almack’s. The beautiful red haired vixen he meets that night bears little resemblance to the shy, gangly girl who used to follow him around. Now, instead of avoiding Charlotte, he finds himself frustrated when she seems to notice everyone but him A charming novella that I read in one sitting, the characters have depth & the story flowed well plus it introduced me to some of the characters in the rest of the series. It sparled my interest enough for me to now read the rest of the series
This was a lovely, sweet short story. It was very short - and at 75% it stops and you get the start of other stories, which annoyed me a little. Lucky I checked that at the start or else I would've expected a longer story. Anyway I thought the story was adorable - Alex was very charming and attractive, and I liked having his point of view as well as Charlotte's. Charlotte was stubborn and both brave but insecure, and I thought she was a good character. The romance was well done and the chemistry between the two was lovely. I enjoyed the story so much and was a little sad that it ended so soon. I like short stories - I don't like reading long books - but I guess I liked the story so much I was sad when it ended. But it was very good and I had a lovely time reading it.
More of a 2.5. I really wanted to love this novelette; the premise was so promising. My complaints come mostly to Charlotte. She had to tell herself to "put on her confident mask" so to speak, yet she was so brazen when it came to wanting the Duke, none of her insecurities mattered anymore. And she was so fast to jump to conclusions where he was concerned. Maybe it would have come across better had it been a full novel and could have been more in depth.
A cute little story prequel to Landing with Lord books. Since its a freebie on Amazon I got it thinking what the heck even if its bad you didn't waste any money. But that wasn't the case here.I found myself enjoying the book ans wanting more which led my to buy book #1 Loving the Marquess. Nothing huge happens but its a story you will like no matter what.Surprisingly it even has a little heartache which often doesnt happen to short stories. The characters were also very likeable.
This was a prequel novella so to be fair you cannot compare it to a full length novel wrt content. However I was still disappointed that the story was simplistic and predictable. Nothing sets this story apart from any other Regency romance out there. It was not terrible... just unoriginal. I cannot find more than 3 stars to offer.
The sequels however DO seem to have unique stories... so I plan to dive into those.
"Stando così vicina ad Alex, Charlotte faticava a respirare. «Cosa vuoi?» sussurrò. La sua risposta questa volta fu immediata, sorprendendola. Lui alzò una mano sulla sua guancia e il pollice le sfiorò le lentiggini che non aveva coperto con la cipria. «Te. Voglio te»."
Una breve ma dolce storia in perfetto stile "she fall first but he fell harder". Amo molto questa dinamica perciò, anche se tutto si svolge abbastanza velocemente, non potevo non apprezzare questa storia!
There is something about these short historical romance novellas that I can never resist and this one was no exception, it contained just enough of a glimpse into the lives of it's main characters to make me interested. Short sweet and happy ending for Alex and Charlotte was a perfect way to start my day!
I finished this last night. It was a quick, easy read with smooth writing and engaging characters. I loved seeing the much sought after Duke put in his place by a chit he used to barely tolerate. Excellent read. Looking forward to the rest of the series.
Cute, short story. I wish the author would have chosen to make this a full-length novel. I would have liked to know more about the characters and their relationship past and present.
