Plagued by nightmares of the horrific misdeeds of his mass-murderer targets, the executioner Nexus chooses a life-threatening procedure to block his tormenting night visions. But though the nightmares cease, the behavior of Nexus becomes increasingly erratic and violent, a dangerous development for a man who wields the power of the stars! Created by Mike Baron and Steve Rude, Nexus is a science-fiction superhero masterpiece, and Nexus Omnibus Volume 2 features nearly 400 story pages of the award-winning series.
Some of the peak issues are in this volume, including Nexus' fat Elvis period and the amazing water color cover picture of him holding a sniper rifle. It also has Clonezone stories, which hold a special place in my heart. My main regret as a Nexus fan is that I never won a Clonezone t-shirt back when they were giving them away.
It's been years since I read the comics collected here (probably since they were first published in the 80s), and I had forgotten how good this science fiction (with some superhero trappings) is. Looking forward to volume 3.
The main stories in Nexus are mostly just fantastic. Some of the fill-in artists can be jarringly different from Steve Rude's flowing, graceful art style. Going from Rude to Keith Giffen's sketchy, blocky, ugly style is quite the contrast. Reading these stories again just makes me remember how much fun this book was to read every month. This might actually be one of my favorite science fiction comics. (Another being the early run of Jim Starlin's Dreadstar).
My only dislike of these Omnibus editions is the seemingly throw-away (to me anyway) backup "Tales of the Clone Zone" stories. I finally remembered I have the simple ability to skip them and save myself the frustration.
