The One for Me

Seventeen-year-old Katy couldn’t find good luck if it were in an open pail. Her parents announce their divorce and her boyfriend, Hayden, of a year breaks up with her for long legged hottie, Holly, all in one week. Katy’s luck might as well be buried with her dignity, when she is partnered up with Avalon High School’s own bad boy Liam Erickson.

Katy follows Liam after he ditches her to go to a party, where she finds Hayden and Holly swapping spit in her face. Furious, Katy kisses Liam to get back at Hayden, leaving her with a re-bound girl and new class hoe reputation.

Determined to save the last bit of her reputation, she proposes Liam a deal, a good reputation with his teachers, if he will ‘pretend’ to be her boyfriend, to stop the rumors. Katy deals with her parents’ divorce, her reputation being ruined and finds herself having more in common with Liam than she ever imagined. By the end, Katy can’t tell who is ‘pretending’ and who isn’t.

Okay, first of all, I love the cover.
That's it. That's the only thing I love about this book.

Haha. No. Seriously though, I was contemplating on whether or not I'll continue reading this one because of the following points:

Katy (the heroine), is an IMMATURE, SELF-CENTERED, WHINY LITTLE BITCH. Plus, she's a WEAKLING. -- Okay, Katy, I get it that your father left you and your mom and that your asshat of a boyfriend, Hayden, left you as well but that doesn't give you the right to keep bitchin' about it all the time. GET.A.GRIP. When the whole school is spreading rumors about you being a slut, you again, KEPT ON WHINING. Why don't you just let it go? And when your ex Hayden said some hurtful words to you, you can't even defend yourself or like make a nasty comeback. Girl, I can't connect with you.

Liam (the hero), calls Katy "Little Bear" --Uhm, OKAY.

The whole thing started off with Katy being partnered up with the school manwhore. "Okay, your assignment for the weekend is to
get to know your partner. Write a list of things that you like and don’t like about the person."
--Sounds familiar? Why do I have the feeling that I've read a similar line/setup like this? PFFFTTT.

And of course, Katy, being the self-centered bitch that she is, found a brilliant idea of using Liam (by pretending to be her boyfriend ) to make Hayden jealous. --I mean, really? Get over it and move on already! Geez.

Long story short, Manwhore changed and fell in love with girl. Girl realized she has feelings for him too. End of story. --These stories are getting old, don't ya think?

I felt that everything was kinda rushed and I found the story not believable.

What I do like about the book

Thank God for the Glee references. Everyone who knows me know that I'm a HUGE GLEEk so yeah, I kinda like it.

Says the girl in a reindeer sweater. That’s only okay when Rachel does it. --When this was mentioned, I instantly googled Rachel in the said outfit. Hihi.

“Sam is my favorite,” I say and grab a hand full of popcorn.
“How predictable,” Jen says.
“What, why? Finn or Puck would be predictable. Who do you like Jane and Henry?”
“Gasp, that’s racist,” she says, smiling.
“Thank you very much I like Artie. Look at those big glasses…swoon.”
I roll my eyes. “I still like Sam.”
--Woah wait, Who's Jane and Henry???

You want to have a Glee marathon or The Vampire Diaries?”
“That is the hardest question you’ve ever asked me,” I say. I stroke my chin.
“Damon or Sam?”
“What the hell, Sam!” I yell.
--Seriously? You chose Sam over Damon???

Haha. Sorry 'bout that.

I also liked that near the end, Katy redeemed herself and became mature for once in her life. She patched things up with her dad (Thank God) and the thing she did for Liam was commendable. So, good job, Katy.

I think this is the best part of the book-->

That's about it.

Overall, I'm not really impressed. The story was short, sort of sweet, but rushed (especially the ending).

My name is Layla James and I wrote this novel. First off, I wanted to thank everyone that has read, going to read, or commented on my novel, the good or the bad.

I'm very serious about getting my novel out there, so I wanted to let everyone know that I took everyone's reviews into consideration. I will have an edit version updated tonight on Amazon and a new book cover.

Thank you all for the support!

Sincerly,
Layla James! :)

More like 3.5 stars.
It was a good read, though not very original in my opinion. And I was annoyed by the writing. Too many errors. Grammar or typos. Very elementary school-like. And who the hell was Logan anyway??? I think it was mentioned either in stead of Liam or Hayden. A few times. Too many for my likes. And I think once or two the writer mistook Liam for Hayden or whatever. Very annoying, as I said. I mean, I know now it's self-published, but still. It's English, for Pete's sake! Can't you at least write the verbs and times right? And, about the typos, before you publish a book, please re-read it multiple times and check there aren't errors such as "Her" instead of "Here" and so may others. It was frustrating, trying to understand what was written and then realize it was a different word than the one there. Or the use of the verb "Done" instead of "Did". I mean, I can let it pass when it comes to the way teens talk, but teachers? Teachers mistaking verbs is just too much. I'm not and English language expert or anything (I'm even Italian, mind you) but even I know how to write in Elglish. And know the use of verbs.

That thing aside, there was another thing that annoyed me a bit. There were some resemblance to Hush Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick, referring to when Patch and Nora have to work together for a school project (sex and attraction too, come to think of it), then he ditches her to go somewhere else and she goes to find him and.. so on. And there's a phrase Liam said to Katy that reminded me too much of something Patch said to Nora. Made me uncomfortable. It was annoying.

The good part was Liam and Katy relationship. Very hot, fun and kind of sweet. I liked Liam, after he stopped being a jerk. And it kind of made me sick how Katy behaved around Hayden, especially that one time when Liam got mad for good. I mean, she had just spent an amazing time with Liam, was it really necessary to succumb and cry like a little girl in Hayden's arms? I mean, it was no big deal and how Liam reacted was too much, but still. Weak girl. Get a grip.
Hayden was hateful and kind of pityful too, if you ask me. An idiot.
Jennifer was nice, though nothing special.
Katy's parents were cool. Especially her mom. I liked her, she was an awesome mother. And the frozen boxers thing was very funny.
All in all, a good read. It even made me cry. Twice! And yeah, I'll admit it here, and I know it might sound crazy, but I like books that can make me cry, as well as make me laugh. I love it when I get strong emotions by reading a book, be it something fun or something sad or incredibly romantic.
Anyway, obviously recommended!

I was a fan of the book "Easy" and seeing the two back on the cover of another book I kind of had high expectations, I enjoyed this book, no real hot and heavy sex scenes which was kind of a disappointment, even a girl my age can drool at the eye candy on the cover :)
But getting over that it was a nice way to spend a rainy day, curled up on the couch losing myself in this book..

First off, I wanted to say that I read over everyone's reviews on this and was if-y about reading it. Then I saw where the author had uploaded the second to last edit, then uploaded the newest edit as fast as Amazon would let her. But, too many people had read it before the new edit was up and that she was mortified. So, I decided to give it a read after the new edit was uploaded.

I liked it. It's more of a novella feel, but who doesn't like those on a chilly day with some coffee? It was a quick, funny and quirky read. It made me smile a lot, it was sad, and the character grew in those first few pages.

I thought she done a good job, especially to have not had a crit partner. I loved Liam and her best friend.

People seem to be judging this book as if it was published by an publishing company. This is just one aspiring author's first book. I've read her comments and she takes everyone's reviews into mind and edits her book afterwards.

To me,this is a great start for a upcoming author. I hope she sells tons and I will read her next book! :))

I enjoyed this book. I normally read paranormal. It was nice to take a step into a quirky contemporary novel. It was self-published, and for a self-published book, I thought it was great! :))

2/5 stars

I instantly bought this after reading the description. I didn't even bother reading over the reviews, because I was sold on the premise. Unfortunately, I was sorely disappointed.

However, before I start with the nitty-gritty, I'd like to emphasize that the beginning was promising. I was hopeful. Interested.

A few pages later.... Not so much.

First, the author milked the Asian Girl Stereotype with Katy's only friend. I forgot her name, but she was the embodiment of lazy writing, and I found myself annoyed at how many times I was "reminded" of her "Asian" attributes. Like, wow. Just no. STOP. I got it the first time.

Katy was decent, but very vanilla. Also, her relationship with Liam felt rushed. The author should have milked the "pretend" dating aspect for MUCH longer, rather than wasting time on other unnecessary details. Their "realization" came too soon, so I kind of lost interest after that. Also, it bugged the hell out of me when Liam referred to Katy as "sweetheart" - um, do high-school bad boys really speak like that?

Katy's ex bf Hayden, was just another filler character. No substance, perfect cardboard cut-out stereotype with Jerk Syndrome, no explanations of exactly why he dumped Katy, no background info whatsoever regarding their relationship. One huge detail was mentioned, but was not explored in depth... So why did Katy date him for over a year again? Oh yeah, his piercing green eyes. Huh. Interesting... Very deep...

Alright, so maybe I'm being a bit harsh. There were a few good bits: the night of dance and the reconciliation (including the teddy bear) was sweet and cute in a very cliche, high-school, teen chick-flick manner.

I'd say this is an OK read if you're in the mood for something very light, with little to no character development. Otherwise, skip this one. Don't say I didn't warn you.

It was a sweet & fun read, though it did remind me of Patch from Hush Hush Series.
What the author managed brilliantly in this book is making the reader feel the chemistry between Katy and Liam. He’s a bad boy, all right, but he’s sexy, smart, dark and always has a perfect come back. The dialogue was the one thing that convinced me to read the book in the first place when I skimmed through the excerpt, and it kept going smoothly all the way to the end. Congratulations to the author for that. There are however some grammatical mistakes and a few errors here and there.
All in all, a good read. It even made me cry. And yeah, I'll admit it here, and I know it might sound crazy, but I like books that can make me cry, as well as make me laugh. I love it when I get strong emotions by reading a book, be it something fun or something sad or incredibly romantic.

1.5 Stars (FOR THE FIRST EDITION)

I don't know if it's because I've had a string of bad luck with the ebooks I've been reading lately, but I didn't enjoy this story very much. That being said, be prepared for some very picky comments.

I was interested in the synopsis of the story, but not a fan of the execution.

1. Revisions need to be made. (Hopefully they were made in the other edition of this book.)
There were occasional grammar errors, but not a whole lot that I couldn't read the story. My biggest concern is that names were misused. One is when she uses the wrong name for Hayden and calls him Logan. Another incident is when she uses Hayden's name even though I'm pretty sure she was talking about Liam near the end of the story where she listed a number of things she wanted to happen.

2. Plot holes.
Plot holes. There are a lot of them (and they're picky). One is the assignment Mr. Fringe assigns them in Science class. Writing an essay about attractive qualities your lab partner has? That doesn't seem very appropriate since there are a whole bunch of ways it could go wrong if someone decided to be mean to their lab partner. Another thing is Katy doesn't exactly seem like the goody two shoes she and everyone else is making her out to be. She's skipped some classes to make out with Hayden, she ditched school 1 time during the story without really feeling bad about it, and she doesn't really hesitate to start a commotion in the middle of class. Yes, she does show some restrain before having a meltdown but it doesn't seem to last long enough for a person who's on the honor roll to hold out. Liam's character also doesn't really match the bad boy type. More like a playboy (and I use that term loosely since he isn't shown flirting with a lot of girls).

3. Emotions!...Wasn't really feeling it.
I felt Katy's distress about her break up...but I couldn't feel any of the chemistry she had with Hayden. I know that's technically perfect since that demonstrates how much Hayden never really felt for her, but since we're seeing it from her POV, I figure I'd get some sense of how special their relationship felt to her; that didn't happen. As for building the relationship between her and Liam, I felt some of it, but not enough to be totally convinced.

4. What up with the emphasis on the Asian stereotype?
Yup, Asian parents are strict. HAHA we get it. I wasn't offended with the constant mention of Jen's strict life, but it was kind of annoying how much it was emphasized. Like, did you seriously need to go as far as saying that Jen dresses in hideous sweaters that her mom makes her wear? I also didn't see the necessity of mentioning Chick Fillet and gays.

Overall, I wasn't very satisfied with the story. Maybe it's because I've been starting/reading a whole bunch of ebooks that have been disappointing me that I got really picky with this one (which if that's the case, then I apologize). Despite my complaints, this story does have moments that work so it does have potential to be a great story. It's just not for me. But hey, give the newer edition a shot in case any of the things I listed here were fixed.

Hmmm I've just realized the beginning of this is very similar to Born at midnight by C.C. Hunter

Chapter One of Born at midnight
“This isn’t funny!” her father yel ed.
No, it wasn’t, Kylie Galen thought as she leaned into the refrigerator to find something to drink. In
fact, it was so not funny she wished she could crawl in beside the mustard and moldy hot dogs, shut
the door, and not hear the angry voices spewing from the living room.
Her parents were at it again.
Not that it would go on much longer, she thought as the mist of the fridge seeped out the door.
Today was the day.
Kylie’s throat tightened. She swal owed a lump of raw emotion and refused to cry.
Today had to be the suckiest day of her life. And she’d had some pretty sucky days lately, too.
Acquiring a stalker, Trey breaking up with her, and her parents announcing their divorce—yup, sucky
pretty much covered it. It was no wonder her night terrors had returned ful force.
“What have you done with my underwear?” Her father’s growl spil ed into the kitchen, snuck under
the refrigerator door, and bounced around the hot dogs.
His underwear? Kylie pressed a cold diet soda can to her forehead.
“Why would I do anything with your underwear?” her mother asked in her oh-so-nonchalant voice.

Chapter one of The one for me.
“This isn’t funny,” my dad yells.
No, no it’s not. I lean against the kitchen table and shovel in the rest of my eggs, desperate to leave the dining room and get away from my parent’s bickering. I wish I could crawl into the aquarium on the far wall and drown myself. I’m sure I would be decimated before my parents would notice.
My parents are at it again, for the seventeenth time this week. I lean up in my seat to glance over into the laundry room, watching Dad. He is standing in front of Mom, his hand clenched around a pair of frozen boxers. Mom’s face is emotionless, paying him no attention. She has one killer poker face.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Mom says, laying the shirt she is holding, on the ironing board in front of her. She presses lightly, twirling the iron around in circles, slowly.
“This,” Dad says, waving the pair of frozen boxers in her face, “you froze all my boxers, Kathy.”
Mom sighs, shrugs her shoulders and smiles. She smiles. I have to look away. It’s too risky. It’s almost funny. Almost.
Dad laughs. It’s loud and hysterical. I would glance back to see if Dad’s vein in his head is popping out, but I don’t. I already know it’s there. His laughing like a coyote comes to an abrupt stop.
Time to go.

Hmmm, I wonder if i overlooked other similar things in book.

Some spoilers.

Okay. What did I think? I think I like to put at least one positive thing in a review... I think I can't come up with one. I can't even say the grammar was good or the spelling as it was riddled with spelling errors and missing words, the punctuation was quite often in the wrong place ,; < those two especially.
I can tell you a whole list of reasons why this, in my opinion, deserves one star.

1. The time span. A week. WEEK. Yeah, that's as long as it takes our "Heroine" to lose her feelings for her ex, begin to like and know Liam (the guy she hates?) and have feelings for him. Not to mention the fact that Liam was able to track down and find his long lost mother, who disappeared to protect him from an illness she doesn't appear to have when she makes her appearance near the end.

2. The characters are 2D. There was a great deal of effort by the author to make a sad background for Liam... however it was so cliche it actually made his 2d character worse. None of the characters seemed to have real fears, just superficial and fickle ones.
The main character Katy is irritating. Liam's okay but needed more work for me to feel anything for him other than... well actually I didn't feel anything at all. That most be worse than hating him? And as for Haydan? There was nothing to his character except to be the cliche jerk with no real personality.

3. I didn't believe they loved/liked each other. The clearest sign of badly written love story is when the reader finishes and doesn't believe it.

4. The whole catch your new GF with her ex-BF and have it be a complete misunderstanding but still break you up... yeah, the one in too many books and movies.

3 stars

ok so i finished this book within like 3 hours not because it was good but because it was small. I felt like the story was rushed (especially the end) and the time span was kind of unrealistic.

what i liked:
1. Chemistry between Liam and Katy.
2. the beach scene.
3. Jen.
4. Katy's parents.
5. the ending: transformation of our selfish whiny katy to a likeable character!!

what i didnt like:
1. Katy: Katy like Jen mentioned in the book is self centered and whiny.
2. time span: 2 weeks is all it took for katy to break up from her year old relationship, fall in love with Liam (who she hated)and ruin the relationship, track down Liam's long lost mother. like wtf??
3. paradoxes: Katy was not exactly a "good" girl as everyone gave her credit for... i mean she did skip class to make out with hayden, and Liam was not much of bad boy. he was just a player.
4. typos and grammatical errors: A few grammar mistakes. but what disturbed me was the fact that names were misused. she uses Hayden's name twice even though I'm pretty sure she was talking about Liam. Another one is when she uses the wrong name for Hayden and calls him Logan. [edit: turns out i got the old copy]
5. the whole book seemed to have scenes copied from other books. like "Okay, your assignment for the weekend is to get to know your partner. Write a list of things that you like and don’t like about the person." <---- Doesnt Perfect Chemistry have a similar scene? it felt like i was reading a book i had already read.
6. the book was wayy too short and there were a lot of plot holes. i mean liam's mom seemed healthy when she returns.... and was she pregnant when she left or something? did she take the child (brian) with her? are we supposed to do the math and find out?

Book cover Love it, book not so much:

When i heard this book had a bad boy, i really wanted to read it.....

That change when i started to read the first few chapters

I didn't liked any of the characters at all through the book, Katy was to whiny and kinda annoying, until the end she matured, Liam Erickson i thought i would fall in love with instantly being a bad boy and all, until i kinda realized he wasn't bad at all really.

I didn't like the way the author kept reminding us a hundred times that Jen was Asian! I also thought the book was kinda rushed, especially the ending.
It was a really short read, i wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

I really enjoy reading this book if not for the errors of the book. I really enjoy reading both characters, especially Liam. Katy can be a bit of a whinnor, but I understand where she is coming from, if I was under her circumstances I would also be indulging in self pity. I'm glad that everything worked out in the end though. Great short story :D

Typical high school drama but still an enjoyable quick read. Nothing too heavy. It has potential but still needs character and plot developmental to give it more depth. I am glad I read this book and I look forward to reading more by this author as she continues to hone her skills. :-)
