Ed Says U Said: Eating Disorder Translator

Rate this book
When an eating disorder (ED) is involved, the problems caused by miscommunication can have serious consequences. A remark from a parent that is intended as positive encouragement could act as a trigger and a criticism from someone with an ED might really be a cry for help. This book aims to improve communication between someone with an eating disorder and their friends and family by revealing the eating disorder mind set and decoding language choices. Using examples of real-life, everyday conversations, ED says U said translates the highly charged language of anorexia, bulimia and binge eating disorder and unravels the emotional chaos that can surround sufferers and those who care for them. It provides clear examples of the common pitfalls and gives invaluable advice about how to help in defusing the triggers and regaining the personality swamped by the illness. A unique resource of information on EDs, this book will be essential reading for everyone who has been affected by eating disorders: sufferers, carers, family and friends, together with health care professionals treating people with eating disorders.

‘Ed says U said’ is a non-fiction, self-help book relating to the topic of eating disorders, namely anorexia, bulimia and binge-eating disorder. The accessibility of the book, not least of all due to its larger print, use of social media icons and constant relation to real life scenarios, is a major benefit for a topic that could prove daunting for a reader looking for assistance or further information.

The book explains not only the nature of eating disorders, but does so in a manner that steers clear of excessive clinician speak and centers largely on the relationships around the ED sufferer. Providing help for the person adopting a ‘carers’ role is a major thread, as is detailing the thoughts, actions and beliefs that accompany disordered eating.

The downside seems to be the focus surrounding the teenage sufferer, as the majority of the book refers to parents attitudes, school related situations etc. I found this disheartening as it prescribes to the stereotype of an eating disorder really only affecting a bony girl of 15 or so, and didn’t touch enough upon the increasing prevalence now being seen among grown women and even men during all ages and stages of life. This reader was concerned that continually referring to an Eating Disorder as a problem occurring during puberty could dissuade older readers from seeking further help if they genuinely need to do so.

However, the information contained in ‘Ed Says U Said’ was overall informative, clearly conveyed, and the basic premise was established by the final page. As one of survivors states, outlining the mantra she used to bring herself to a place of wellbeing, “I deserve to be treated with respect”.
And don’t we all.

For those trying to support a loved one with an eating disorder, this book provides lots of insights into the importance of what’s communicated and inevitably misinterpreted by those suffering from an eating disorder. It does a good job of organizing the chaos, but much of the “dialogue” is geared towards younger people.

I think the book can be valuable for those with anorexia. My daughter does not suffer from that (binge eating is her issue) and I thought the title was a bit misleading. I need to find a book that focuses more on binge eating and thought this might be more helpful in that regard.
