In 10th century France, 18-year old Cherine Cadet only knows one thing: that the life of a peasant isn’t a life at all. Tired of working in utter poverty for an unfeeling Lord, with only her indifferent family and love-struck best friend as company, Cherine dreams of the day she can run away from the future set-up for her, even if she knows there’s no real escape from her destiny.

Then, in one brutal instance, everything changes. A Viking fleet led by the powerful nobleman and warrior, Rolf the Walker and his right-hand man, Erik the Axe, arrive on the shores of the Lord’s estate. In minutes, the entire land is up in flames, Cherine’s family and fellow serfs are killed, and Cherine comes dangerously close to death herself. She is saved only by the fierce Erik – but a new lease on life comes with a cost.

Cherine becomes a slave to the Vikings, a fate she thinks is no better than the one she had before. But as she finds herself being shared between the two men, the savage and darkly handsome Rolf and the mysterious and sensual Erik, Cherine discovers that she too has a fiery warrior heart and that the flames that consumed her old life might burn them all to the ground.

Author's Note: While this book is set in 909 A.D. and efforts were made to keep it authentic to the time period, the language used IS modern. If you are looking for a 100% accurate historical read, this might NOT be the book for you. If you don't like historical romances because of the old language, then this book might be for you.

Though she tries hard to hide it, Emma MacKenzie got her start in writing by penning cheesy romantic comedy screenplays. Despite having seven published novels under her garter belt, this is her first foray into erotic romance. Considering how big of a pervert she is, it probably won't be her last.

"She admitted to herself that in the past, she squirmed a little with talk about hulking male beasts ripping the clothes off of fair maidens, but now that it was as real as night and day, she was only squirming from fear."

Cherine is 18 years old French peasant, with temperamental character but unhappy life. After night attack of barbarian Viking raiders, her life changed completely. No longer a feudal servant, Cherine is choson to be sexual servant instead. Would this change bring her a hapiness???

Right from the very beginning it was very clear, that this was not a traditional erotic or romance story. Savagery took me on one emotional, historical and unexpected journey. There were even thoughtful ideas about life, death and redemption. And since it is very difficult to find this stuff in erotic novels these days, I was really impressed how author balanced everything important into her story - sexiness, thoughtfulness, action, character development and exciting plot, everything was there and in right amounts.

When reading a book, it is very important to get attached to characters for me to like it. And Emma MacKenzie succeed in it. She made me care for characters, root for their hapiness, worry about what will happen to them. Even though Erik the Axe was warrior and definitely not a saint, I found something sweet and sensitive in him which made me like him from the very beginning of this book. It was visible that he cared a lot for Cherine and I was rooting for him all the time. Which brings me to Rolf the Walker... the ruthless leader, arrogant person and sick beast. No matter how "alfa male" he was, I could not find him attractive or like him at all. But it is always a very good sign when author is able to make reader feel so strongly about characters, whether to make love them or hate them. The only thing that was missing was more detailed world-building.

So if you do not mind some bloody action, ruthless behaviour and want some really emotional and sexy read with exciting plotline and thoughtful characters, definitely go for this one.

I picked this up thinking it would be a very quick read with a bit of Viking violence and a lot of Viking smut. And it was, but it also had an interesting plot, a lot of heart, and had me in tears at the end.

I immediately like Cherine. She is a Serf in northern France and when her village is ransacked by Vikings, everybody and everything she knew is destroyed, and she is saved and then taken by gorgeously hot Viking, Erik. I liked him pretty much straight away, he is never anything but gentle and tender with Cherine, in stark contrast to Viking leader, Rolf - brutal, brash and demanding, he’s a tricky one to work out, and my opinion of him changed a few times throughout the book.

Even though Cherine is essentially a prisoner, Erik never treats her as such, protecting and caring for her. And they quickly give in to the chemistry between them, and find themselves starting to fall for each other.

“If you leave me, I really will have nothing.”
“I’m not going to leave you.” His voice was hard with sincerity and butterflies took flight in her stomach.
“Do you promise me?”
“I thought you couldn’t wait to get away,” he said.

“I want to get away from these people. I want to get away from his war, from all this senseless death. But I don’t want to get away from you.”

I really love the character development in Cherine. She goes from slave to prisoner to a strong, adventurous young woman who stands up to Erik and takes what she wants. And, surprisingly to her, she finds some happiness in her new life. But she doesn’t know that Rolf has taken a liking to her and has told Erik to “break her in” for him. And when Rolf comes to collect, as his second in command, Erik obeys and stands aside (literally – he’s still in the room the first time, and even joins in). And when Rolf shows her his softer side, things get even more complicated. But does Cherine even have a choice?

I liked this story. The writing is very descriptive and the violence is brutal, but I guess that’s how things really were. I’ve read a bit of historical fiction, but haven’t read anything about Vikings before, but it seems very true to life, and what I imagine it to be like. The sex is hot (and graphic), but important to the story. There is quite a bit of action and a few surprises along the way - including the ending, which was NOT what I was expecting! , but, as always, it was the romance that held my interest, and that is done really well.

He had been a killer, a plunderer. And now he was her lover. He did all of this and yet saved her at the same time. He had taken everything she ever had and in the end he loved her.

Savagery definitely lives up to it's name!

This is the story of Cherine, a French peasant whose village is taken over by barbaric Vikings. With her family dead and everything she knows gone, she is left with nothing. Erik aka "Erik the Axe" as he is known by his people, decides to spare her and is given permission to "break her in" by Rolf aka "Rolf the Walker", his best friend and their leader.

I really loved Cherine. She was bold, strong, stubborn, but not so much that she was stupid. There was a fine line that she had to walk to stay in Erik & Rolf's good graces. Erik was likable for me immediately. Even though his past as a merciless and brutal killer is referenced, he is so good to Cherine and I always felt empathetic toward him. I loved the two of them together!

“You’re not a lady, Cherine.” She looked down at her hands and muttered, “Right. I am but a peasant.” “No,” he said roughly and reached for her face. He caressed her cheek with his knuckles and she closed her eyes in response. “You are a woman. A very beautiful, dragon-hearted woman. And you’ll make a man very lucky one day.”

Then there's Rolf... I freaking HATE this guy with a passion! He was vindictive, fickle, barbaric, and completely savage. Even when it seemed like he was about to show some redeeming qualities, I just couldn't get past the way he made me feel. He gave me the heebie jeebies something fierce! The whole time I just wanted Erik to kill him! I wanted Erik and Cherine to just ride off into the sunset and make lots of gorgeous babies together. The End.

The sex scenes in the book were great, but I have to say, for an erotic romance, I was expecting more sex. Not that I'm complaining, because they were well done. I just didn't expect so much from from the story, so that's a plus :) The language was also something that I wasn't expecting, in a good way. I usually stray away from historical romance because of the outdated language, but in this it was very modern and easy to read.

The action and violence was intense. I had to constantly remind myself of when this story was set and what the times were like back then to not be so bothered by it. It isn't pretty and you definitely get a glimpse of Viking life and how brutally savage they could be.

Savagery was a quick, easy read that held my attention the entire time. I really cared about most of the characters and wanted a happily ever after for them so badly! The ending is shocking and the emotions/feel of the story change drastically in the last 5%. I swear I may have whiplash!

3.5 Hot Viking Stars!

I have had this book sitting in my TBR for a while and am so happy I finally sunk my eyes into it. Savagery is a fast, action packed (Viking style) sexually raw and gritty read with a really sweet love story.

Cherine, our heroine is a tough little peasant. She does what she must to survive but is not afraid to feel the awakening of her body and act upon those feelings.

Erik and Rolf are the big bad conquering Vikings. They have known each other their entire lives and Erik, as second in command to Rolf, is loyal and does what Rolf demands. Rolf wants Cherine and Erik is to get her ‘primed’ up for the big-bad-beast and in doing so he falls in love with her.

Erik, (I totally loved him) is wrestling with his warrior ways and struggles with the belief in the Norse gods. But, Erik remains loyal to Rolf at least for now.

Love in this savagery world of bloody Viking battles, overtaking of dukes and betrayal, does not come easy. Does it even come at all?

You will have to find out- I encourage you readers to travel back to 909 A.D. and enjoy this little journey.

“Perhaps ravens are the souls of all the people who have died, flying high and watching over you. That’s what I’d like to believe. Even when I’ve found there’s so little left to believe in"

"I want to get away from these people. I want to get away from this war, from all this senseless death. But I don't want to get away from you."

Savagery is a pretty good title for this book. It was quiet gory and barbaric at times, but it didn't really bother me. I didn't find Cherine to be likable in the beginning, she came across as very selfish. The forced love triangle was executed pretty well. I couldn't blame her for feeling attracted to both Eric and Rolf, however, I was also glad when she changed her mind when she saw a different side to one of them. The sex scenes were very hot and erotic, and I wanted more scenes involving the three of them. Unfortunately, the story was just too short for me to fully connect to the characters, so it left me wanting more. I kind of wanted more character development, and time for the characters to grow as a couple. But overall it was an enjoyable super erotic and savage/barbaric viking story.

Savagery has everything I like in a book. Well-drawn characters, a good balance of romance and action, and a clear "voice" I can easily connect with. Despite its historical setting, it has a very modern feel to it, which made for quick, easy reading. I breezed through this novella in less than a day.

Did I mention the story also features Vikings and several scorching sex scenes that may require you to have an industrial-sized fan nearby, just so you can flip it on and cool yourself off after you read those scenes? Trust me, you'll need one! I sure did....when it was Cherine and Erik.

Which brings me to why I only rated this book three stars. I can sum it up in one word.

ROLF.

I despised Rolf. Absolutely, unequivocally LOATHED him. He was a total douchecanoe and nothing he said or did impressed me. The whole time, I just wanted him to f*cking DIE so I could enjoy Cherine and Erik's story in peace. Because truthfully, I loved Erik and Cherine together, and if this had been entirely their story, and theirs alone, I would be writing a very different review right now. 4-5 stars, easy. Instead, because of stupid Rolf, I couldn't enjoy the book as much as I wanted to, and that's a damn shame. There was so much about Savagery I liked and I wish I'd been able to get past Rolf's awfulness, but alas, I couldn't.

I received an Advanced Reader Copy of Savagery from the author in exchange for an honest review. After reading the synopsis, I was more than happy to take a chance on this book. Hot Vikings? Erotica? Sounds good to me!

Savagery is part historical fiction, part love story, and part erotica. Cherine is an 18 year old peasant living in 10th century France, trapped by a life planned out before her – a life without choice. As the sole survivor of a Viking attack, Cherine finds herself a prisoner caught between two fearsome Viking warriors – Erik the Axe and Rolf the Walker. As devastating as the trauma of losing her family and the life she once knew is, Cherine is not willing to simply give up.

“Her whole family had just been killed, her peasant life was disappearing by the second, yet there was something in her that compelled her to keep fighting.”

It was her beauty and vulnerability that attracted Erik to her initially, and her courage and tenacity added to her allure.

“There was a hint of defiance in her emerald eyes and that sort of fire drew him to her.”

After years of battle, inflicting and surrounded by death, Erik longs for a change. He dreams of returning home to a simpler way of life free from death and destruction. Can Cherine help him achieve the life he so desperately seeks - one with love and without war and bloodshed? Or will he willingly give her up to his leader and closest friend, Rolf?

Rolf is a beast of a man with charm and brutality in spades. He too, has his eyes on Cherine. Yes, he wants her for her beauty, but he also wants her for her body, and lastly for political reasons. At first, I was convinced he was bad news, but slowly Rolf began to grow on me… or did he? Maybe it’s all just an act. Will Rolf’s charm and power be able to win Cherine over? And will Rolf ever let Erik leave?

Watching this story unfold was so much fun! Yes, it was brutal at times, heartwarming, and heart wrenching in others, but it had a strong plotline. Never once was the plot overshadowed or sacrificed to sexual situations between characters. Not to characterize an entire genre, but I have read many erotic novels that focus far too much on the sex and far too little on plot. All the sex scenes in Savagery fit in seamlessly with the story, and were steamy without being over the top. Nothing was ever forced or felt out of place, at least not with regard to the writing. And I’ll put this out there for everyone – these sex scenes were HOT HOT HOT!

With regard to the sex scenes, the language was great and never detracted from the story. Ever read a sex scene with language and phraseology that just doesn’t do it for you? Sometimes the language used can be the biggest stumbling block, but that is definitely not the case in Savagery. All the erotic scenes were well-written and exciting. In fact, I would have liked to see more of them! I loved them, and would have been even happier if they were drawn out just a little bit longer.

I was team Erik ALL THE WAY, although I’ll admit Rolf did appeal to me for a little while there. I mean, he’s an animal in the sack. Yowza! But the romance factor and the love story woven into the fabric of this book was just so heartfelt, I had to give into it. For example, when I read this little bit, I nearly melted…

“I can’t offer you a ring that’s worthy of your beauty, and I can’t give you a wedding that’s worthy of your soul, but I can ask you to spend the rest of your life with me and hope that’s enough to be worthy of your love.”

‘Nuff said, right? Swoon…

Although the writing feels very modern, the detail with which MacKenzie writes will keep your mind in the correct time period. The descriptive writing is chock full of details which appeal to all the senses - ranging from clothing texture and color to food, sounds, and smells. This attention to detail combined with intense characters, slightly predictable yet exciting plot twists, and cold-shower provoking sex scenes make for a great read!

The one thing I would have liked to see more of, besides more sexy times (perv, I know), was a bit more detail and length at the end of the book. It felt rushed to me and I wasn’t ready to let the characters go yet. I fell in love with the love shared between Cherine and Erik and craved more time with them. I can’t say more without spoiling anything, but I’m betting you’ll feel the same way at the conclusion of Savagery.

I would definitely recommend Savagery to fans of historical fiction that have a taste for erotica. Congratulations to Emma MacKenzie on her first foray into the erotica genre! Can’t wait to see what she has coming up next!!!

As a peasant, Cherine Cadet’s life is predetermined due to her station until an army of Vikings arrive to conquer her village. Upon witnessing the savagery, Cherine is left with nothing and becomes the possession of these men.

“Please your Erik, my beauty. Get him off. Milk him dry. And do it well. You’ll need to impress me.”

Narrated in third person, the plot unfolds at a measured pace as Cherine is thrust into survival mode and not sure who to trust. Known as Erik the Axe, he is on the precipice of a greater calling, yet his loyalty remains to what he has always known. While conquering lands and seizing riches, often resulting in bloody battles and death, the character motivations seem clear until circumstances change.

While I was quite intrigued by Erik the Axe and Rolf the Walker, for their friendship and other reasons, the story moved rather slow for the first half, but then the pace shifted and the story delved into conflict. Additionally, the impetus for Erik’s decision was pivotal to his character and I liked his arc, as well as, the ending.

Genre: Historical Erotica
Type: Standalone
POV: Third Person POV
Rating:

Cherine Cadet’s life was mundanely predictable as a peasant on a French seaside. In a blink, her life was upended when a horde of vicious Vikings swept through her village and took everything including her freedom. But being with them made her realize it might be the only opportunity for her to start anew.

Before starting this book, I expected something dirty with plenty of savagery. The first half was a struggle for me due to the slow pace. Thankfully the last half picked up the slack and gave me what I wanted. I liked how the story ended even though some questions were left unanswered.

Savagery is a story of adaptability and survival. It would appeal to readers who enjoy a modern take on historical erotica.

3.5 Savage STARS!

I enjoyed this book...until the end! NOOOOOO!
A dark entertaining story about savage Vikings. HOT SAVAGE VIKINGS! I stepped out of my comfort zone with this one. I'm not a avid reader of historical romance, but I've read a few. This didn't feel like historical though, the writing was clear, the characters were developed well, and the plot was interesting to say the least!!! I'm sad about the end, my heart is demolished.

I'm not surprised I enjoyed this story. Karina Halle has proven how versatile her writing is. Just Brilliant!

At A Glance
I never read a book about vikings before so I was super excited. It ended up being good but it wasn't quite what I expected.

The Good
I have to admit, vikings are pretty hot. They are capable of so much violence but a few of them in this book were also caring. Mackenzie brings together the gruesome reality of war and battle with the tender and sensual side of fierce men and courageous women.

Cherine's family has been slaughtered and she has been taken for the pleasure of the concurring men who decimated her village. But the reality is so much more complicated. For she is in the hands of Eirk, a fierce warrior but caring lover and protector. Erik has been assigned to "break in" Cherine for Rolf, the leader of the clan. But Erik's feelings for Cherine grow every day, and he can't stand the idea of handing her over to someone like Rolf, someone so rough and animalistic. Cherine is terrified but defiant. But the more Erik shows his gentle side, the more she cares for him. When Rolf comes into the picture, her sanctuary with Eirc crumbles. Cherine is ashamed to admit it, but she is erotically attracted to Rolf's roughness, his aggression. But as time goes on, all she can think about is running away with Erik and leaving the violence Rolf seems so fond of behind.

Cherine was a fascinating character. She had passion, courage, and more depth than I expected. She is open to her sexual desires but feels bad for caring for the men who slaughtered her people. It was a complicated situation, so I understood her confusion. This was her opportunity to become more than a peasant in a small village. With the vikings, she had the chance to gain a title. But at what price? We soon learn the price might just be too high.

I loved Erik right away. He was once a no-mercy killer, but his days in battle have worn him down. After meeting Cherine, all he wants to do is love her, to raise a family, to spend his last days near his loved ones. The war inside him is constant, because he knows Cherine can never love the man who killed her family. He knows he doesn't deserve her forgiveness. It was all so heartbreaking. I could feel his pain as he watched Cherine with Rolf.

Rolf surprised me. I wasn't sure were MacKenzie was going to take him. I can tell you this, I never expected her to make Rolf the character she did. I ended up hating him more than any character in all the books I have read.

I like that MacKenzie kept us on our toes. There was quite a few surprises through Savagery, which kept me glued to the pages. MacKenize held nothing back as she wrote scene after scene of death, debauchery, and degradation. This book was so much more violent and dark than I thought it was going to be. The deceptions are vivid and the emotions behind each word can tear you apart. The plot was also well done; I was enraptured the whole time. Surprisingly, this erotica doesn't have that much sex in it, the story was the focal point.

The Bad
I think the biggest let down is that Savagery's book blurb offered one thing but the reality was quite different. I decided to review this book on a whim. I thought vikings and erotica: hot combo, right? Ever since erotica became a little more mainstream, I have been trying to broaden my horizons. This book sounded like something I have never read before, and I was right. But I thought this book was going to be about fierce men, hot cravings, and the woman who satisfies both. It was so much darker and depressing. The relationship between these three characters was very messed up. I was often sickened by what was happening. When I read erotica, I want tingles not nausea.

And the kicker for why Savagery only got three stars, was the ending. This is somewhat of a spoiler but the ending was very sad and depressing. Not a good thing for a romance or erotica. I was so depressed the whole day after finishing this book. I DO NOT like sad endings. I will ALWAYS remove stars for books with sad endings, unless they are a part of a series and I know it will be better next time.

Also, though the setting is historic, the language is modern. It made it very easy to read but felt less authentic.

The Snuggly
Some of the sex was sizzling hot. MacKenzie didn't hold much back. I especially liked when Erik and Cherine got together. They had a very special connection and it shined through during the sex. But Rolf and Cherine was a whole other story. That was more about degradation and aggression. I didn't like their sex scenes.

Final Thoughts
I left this book heartbroken. I loved a lot about Savagery: the plot, most of the characters, and the detail, but the ending was too depressing for me. I just wish it ended differently. Recommended to those who can stand a sad ending.

Quotes
He had been a killer, a plunderer. And now he was her lover. He did all of this and yet saved her at the same time. He had taken everything she ever had and in the end he loved her.

I didn’t know what to expect when I won an ARC of Savagery in a contest late last week. Well, I was pleasantly surprised (okay, and maybe at times aroused *blushing*) by this erotic, historical romance. Savagery is a fantastic story set in 909 A.D., in Northern France. While I admit this is the first book I’ve read in this genre, I hope it won’t be Ms. MacKenzie’s last. Her writing is excellent, and I quickly found myself captivated by this erotic romance, and my only complaint is that it ended to soon.

Cherine Cadet is a serf, who at the age of 18 is all to aware of her place in society, and the hopelessness that accompanies it. “We are serfs Marc. Peasants. We don’t have a choice in life.” Cherine has been raised by an uncaring mother, and dreams of a seemingly unattainable life of freedom. Her world is turned upside down early one morning when a Viking fleet led by Rolf the Walker, and his right-hand man Erik the Axe, arrive on her Lord’s estate. Cherine watches in horror as her family, friends, and fellow serfs are brutally murdered by these monsters, these savages. Much to Cherine’s surprise her life is spared-but at what cost? She is now held captive, by men that are not from her country and don’t share her beliefs. She has gone through a horrible ordeal, and when both Roff and Erik take an interest in the beautiful girl that is before them, will it break her, or will her own defiant warrior spirit emerge?

As much as Cherine tries to fight the attraction to her captors, it’s a losing battle. She knows desiring her captor isn’t right, but she is unable to deny her feelings. Like Cherine, I was torn by my emotions while reading. I knew the thought of Cherine being held captive as a sexual slave should upset me, but I was also caught up in the savages spell (hello two alpha males, nuf said). These two men were swoon worthy, and the sex scenes in this book were HOT! I found myself enthralled by this triangle and found it difficult to put the story down.

Both Erik and Roff have their own plans for Cherine, but whose desires will win out? “She found a kindred spirit in him, someone else who was born to a life they didn’t want, with only dreams of running away.” Will Cherine find love? Who will it be with? What will this love cost her? Will it set her free? Will she find her own form of “Valhalla”?

This was a wonderful read and one you should not miss out on. 4.5 stars!

Well, it's been a while since I've read Erotic Historical Fiction. I have some vague knowledge of the Vikings, but truly not a whole lot. I didn't realize that this book was inspired by the "real" Rolf. So, now I'm curious about him. However, I really didn't like him in this book. Anyway....on with the review.

Cherine was an ok character for me. At first I was a bit annoyed with her because she just accepted them taking her, but when you think about it, going with them and trying to survive with them, was probably the best bet for her at that point. So, I started to understand her a bit more once I had that debate in my head.

Erik made the story for me. I really liked him and he is a sexy beast. Once a brutal warrior, he no longer has the thirst for blood. He wants to return home and live a peaceful life. When he meets Cherine, I was a bit uncertain about how their relationship would play out, but I really liked them together. He was very sweet and gentle with her.

The sex scenes between Erik and Cherine were hot. I actually would have liked to have seen more sex. There are some sex scenes between Cherine and Rolf, but they kind of turned my stomach. He was so degrading. Well...the threesome scene was hot though. That was the only time I thought Rolf may not be that bad. He quickly changed my mind after that though.

Overall, it was a fast read and it was sexy. I've read this author's other books and am a fan of her writing, but this certainly does have a very different feel. She knows how to write good sex, so I look forward to seeing more Erotic work from her in the future.

Brilliant Writing & HOT!

What an amazing story, I loved the historical significance to Rolf the Walker and how the author built her imagination of the story around the brutal conquers and savagery of the Vikings. Viking raids upon villages, brutal killings, rapes, and sweet revenge.

This was one book I couldn't put down. I had it read before I even realized it, I just wanted it to stay emerged into their world forever. The neat thing is how the story gives us life examples and little lessons to learn from and the one I loved is - Even in all the carnal savagery, love restores hope and light to the most ugly situations.

I think I'm still in awe especially when I think of the ending. My heart bleeds with heartache knowing what Cherine and Erik endured just to escape and be together after Erik fought and cut Rolf's arm off and knowing that eventually Rolf or his men would catch up to him in Norway. Though it was a sad ending, I'm glad Cherine had Erik's child and his legacy can be carried on.

The chemistry was awesome between Cherine and Erik, 4 flames kind of hot. Warning though, a couple of the sex scenes between Cherine and Rolf were dark and sadistic and brutal but the scenes between Cherine and Erik were tender and delicious.

I highly recommend this to those who love the dark erotic savagery of the Vikings yet love a good historical romance to smooth the ugliness away. Awesome Read!

I really did not have a clue what to expect when I was recommended this book. I have never read a Historical book, let alone a Historical Erotic Romance book but I really was very pleasantly surprised. It was a brilliant, quick read with some seriously HOT scenes.

The book is set in 909 A.D in Northern France. I really thought I would struggle with the language and the actual plot lines but I didn't. It was very easy to read and did in fact have a wonderful romantic story line.

Aside from the romantic part of the story it is very raw and gritty - think axes and swords and a lot of limbless men!

Cherine Cadet, the heroine of the story was a sweet 18 year old girl, thrust in to the world of Viking's. After an attack on her village, leaving her the line survived of her family she was forced to put her trust in the Vikings - Erik to be exact.
Erik was the perfect, sexy Viking. He was hard and didn't have the nickname Erik the Axe for nothing, but he saw something in Cherine that caused him to have a softer side and in time he would do anything to protect her.

I read this book in super quick time because I just couldn't put it down and had to find out how it would end. Unfortunately I wouldn't really say the story had a traditional HAE but I could appreciate it and understand it for what it was.

What the HOLY HELL did I just read and FREAKING LOVE?!?! Love in the sense that I’m lusting over this book. I must say when I first accepted this ARC I wasn’t sure about reading an Erotic Historical Romance. Uhh...soooo not my “thing”, BUT the SEX...the story...OMG the SEX!!! And did I mention lusty homicidal Vikings???? YEAH...COUNT ME IN!!

The story begins with Cherine a peasant in 10th century France, who is the sole survivor after a raid on her village by an army of vicious Vikings led by, Rolf the Walker and his wing-man, Erik the Axe. The story builds up with her being claimed by the fiercely loyal Erik, with the knowledge that she is ultimately Rolf’s. Two alpha-males and one hot chick...you know there is going to be trouble and SEX!!

“He bit down hard from the impact, tasting blood, and he couldn’t help but glare at her. Luckily, he knew the taste of blood would soon be replaced.”

I don’t think I have to say exactly what “taste” he is going to replace it with...WINK.

Emma Mackenzie sets the stage and tells the steamy story of Savagery. The dialogue is current and the storyline consumes you from the start. Savagery left me hot, enthralled, and a little teary-eyed. Can’t wait to read what she writes next!!!

I love me some historical reads and if it's erotic, even better. Story is set in 909 A.D. where the title of the book perfectly fits with this era. It was savage.

We have Vikings who invade a small fishing town in France. Cherine is taken hostage after she witnesses the destruction of her village along with her family and friends. Erik, The Axe "saves" her. He's become soft in the long battles he has taken part of. He's looking for his Valhalla(his heaven or redemption) and he found it with her. Buuuut there's Rolf, the leader of his men. The dude is psycho. Seriously. He's also taken in with Cherine. I think he's bipolar cause one moment he could be sweet then the next not so sweet. Cherine and Erik time was great. Cherine and Rolf was good but a little too intense. Cherine, Erik and Rolf time was hot could have been hotter but it was still hot.

I kinda had a feeling that what happened in the end was gonna happen but I still got choked up when it did. I was like Nooooooooo!!! I loved their story even if it was short. I felt the connection and ultimately the love.

Not bad for a free read from Amazon and if Emma continues with her stories like this, except for one part which I do not like reading in a story, I definitely continue with her work.

I feel strangely conflicted about this review. Looking back, I want to say that it was a sweet read; it felt like it was a sweet read, but when I try to think of why, I can't. There's not really a HEA for the couple, there's lots of violence, loss of family and beheadings compliments of the savage Vikings, and even some maybe kinda dubious consent. However, I wouldn't really call it dark either. It's right in the middle, I think, but I enjoyed it nonetheless and thought it well written. Loving the darker reads, I think this straddled the line extremely well for those that want a taste of the dark side without jumping all the way in.

I loved this story...and how could I not?? I'm half Norwegian and it's about Vikings! Seriously, though, this was a fascinating, historical (with writer liberties) story that kept me glued to the pages on my Kindle until I finished it.

While I did like this book, I have to admit that I was very disturbed by Rolf. Seriously, he's the type of guy who has so many faces that you never know which one you're going to get. That creeps me out beyond belief and it added a low-level edge of scary that put me on edge. The fact that this dude is the leader of his merry band of Vikings and Erik, who is ultimately a man who is fighting to hold onto his noble intentions, has to bow to his every whim upped the creepy.

Like Erik, Cherine has no say in her fate. She's taken as a slave and she's told to deal with it. And she does. She does what she has to do to stay alive and she's resigned herself to this new way of life. Yet... she longs for Erik. She pushes it to the side but it doesn't just disappear.

Honestly, trying to figure Rolf out was a big part of the draw in this book. I was never sure if we should take him at face value or pick apart his actions to see what was really driving him. His relationship with both Erik and Cerine was volatile and seemed on the verge of self-destructing again and again.

Enjoyable and definitely sexy, these characters kept me reading. I was alternately lamenting what they were going through and cheering them on. The ending took me by surprise and I'm still thinking about it a day later.

I really liked this book. It could be called a love story, but not a pretty one. It is raw and brutal and a story of survival! The plot was suspenseful, unpredictable with an unexpected ending. No cliff hanger, HEA or HFN I would say it was more 'bitter sweet'!

The sex is hot and steamy. The story is tagged as Menage, but there is only one Meange scene and that was not of the fluffy kind!

The only reason I didn't rate this book higher was due to the amount of silly wee grammar and typo errors. I could still figure out what was being said but it got distracting, such a shame!

wow, I didn`t expect this, I couldn`t stop reading. the only complain I have: the story was really too short, I wanted to read more about them and how they lived together in the end.

from the beginning I was rooting for one guy and my hopes were high he would be together with her in the end. the story was exciting from the beginning and the erotic scenes and storyline were balanced. I love this when the erotic scenes underline the story and aren`t the main focus.

I will definitely read more from the author!!

Savagery: A Viking Thriller was most definitely savage. There is lots of violence/graphic injuries, sexual assault/rape scenes. Cherine, the main female becomes a slave to the Vikings after they attack the Lord's Estate where she lives. Erik the Axe, and Rolf the Walker are the 2 main male characters. I did not like Rolf at all, it's a shame Erik didn't use some of his crazy axe skills to take his head off.

I had to read this after learning recently that Emma MacKenzie is a pen name for Karina Halle ( this is also mentioned in the book and blurb, so no secrecy around this ). I quite enjoy reading books with Viking characters - I would most likely have rated this higher if the story was longer. It was a pretty quick read for me - at the ending I just wanted more of the story. I didn't mind at all that it doesn't have the standard HEA - it's not a light read, and the ending was appropriate to the overall story.

I apologize in advance for any typos or grammatical errors. I usual only write German reviews ;)

909 AD in Northern France: 18 year old Cherine doesn’t lead a very enjoyable life. She’s a peasant on a fiefdom and slaves away for a small overlord. She can’t expect much from her future except marrying her best friend (and sometimes lover) Marc's older brother even though she feels basically nothing for him.
Her life is about to take a sharp turn though, when a horde of bloodthirsty vikings raids her village. They are lead by Rolf the Walker, one of the most feared Vikings ever, and his right hand Erik the Axe. They mow down everything Cherine ever knew and kill the entire village. When Cherine is about to die by the hand of another Viking, as well, she saved – by no other than Erik of all things.
Cherine is determined to never surrender to those barbarians but the more time she spends in Erik's company, the more she has to admit to herself he’s not what she expected a vile Viking to be like. Maybe life as a slave for them wouldn’t be so bad. But Cherine has no idea what’s in store for her, yet. Rolf has great plans with her and he’s not a man anyone can afford to disobey.

I have to admit, I sometimes had some problems with Savagery by Emma MacKenzie. Don't get me wrong, it is a good book. I’m just not quite sure how much I liked it. There were parts that were nothing short of perfect. But then there were also a few scenes when I wanted nothing more than skip a few pages because of the – often emotional – brutality. That's why you should be ready for lots of graphic sex and just as graphic violence before you start this book.
Cherine is an interesting heroine. She’s pretty unhappy with her current situation, not just because of what her future holds (or rather doesn’t hold) but also because she has a pretty bad relationship with the rest of her family. Which is why her reaction to her abductors isn’t exactly what I had expected. She knows she shouldn’t trust them but finds herself unable to resist both Erik and Rolf's sexual attraction and eventually succumbs to it. Which is exactly why I had a problem with her. In her lust she sometimes throws all common sense out the window. She’s also a bit of an opportunist which made her seem a little disloyal at times.
The story is told from both Cherine and Erik’s POV. Even though he has a rather gruesome reputation it’s nearly impossible not to like Erik. He’s haunted by his past and tired of what happens around him with Rolf's Vikings but can’t make an enemy out of him by leaving either. Erik’s quite simply the most tragic figure in this book. Just like Cherine he’s really unhappy with his existence but it’s nearly impossible to leave it behind. Rolf is a megalomaniac who has to have total control over everything and everybody, including Erik and Cherine which makes Rolf just as terrifying as it makes him fascinating.
So what was it I didn’t like about this book other than Cherine’s…lack of control? I don’t think it was one big thing, rather a few small details. One would be one particular and very important sex scene. It changed my view of some of the characters (not for the better) and the sex itself was a bit too much for my taste(though that might be because of what it meant for the story). It might sound a bit nit-picky to give this much weight to one single scene but since the book is rather short this scene just kept stuck in my head and left a bitter taste on my tongue. Another small thing was the use of too many modern words, especially in the steamier scenes. All in all the author did a great job of creating her world and taking us back to 10th century France but sometimes there were just too many modern words or phrases to fit in that era.

Still, Savagery by Emma MacKenzie is more than worth reading. It’s brutal in every way, both emotionally and in its violence. There were a lot of scenes that made me grind my teeth because the violence was this forceful or that made me go beet red they were so sexy. But what trumped all of that was the emotional level that was laced through every other layer of this book. It wasn’t what I expected and made me love and hate and cry over the book all at once. It also made for an utterly satisfying read.
I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on this author.
