This is the first book in The Grangers Series where we are introduced to 3 very sexy Granger brothers. While this first book focuses on Jace, the eldest brother, we get an overall introduction to the Granger family and I feel like I got to know all of the brothers.
This book definitely reads as a mystery/suspense romance. The Granger Dad was convicted of murdering their mother and while all three brothers still hold on to the belief of their father's innocence, they each dealt with the trauma in their own way. They all fled from their hometown to escape but return upon the death of their grandfather who makes them promise to take on the family business Granger Aeronautics.
For unknown reasons the once lucrative family business is in the decline and Shana is hired as a consultant to investigate. The attraction between Shana and Jace is instant. The chemistry is undeniable and the fact that they both fight their feelings for a while makes their eventual union explosive. The steamy scenes while to some extent is descriptive reads rather tame in this book.
I loved Jace! He was strong and sexy but at the same time he was the most responsible, mature brother. The other brothers are more carefree and live the playboy lifestyle and I especially can't wait to read Dalton's story. The mystery of proving their father's innocence is also unsolved in this first book but I think this book is complete enough to be read as a standalone.
4 Stars Series: Book 1 of 3 Mild Cliffhanger 3rd Person POV Heat Level: Light to Moderate HEA
The Grainger brothers left their home in Virginia to never look back. Their family was torn a part when they were long boys due to a family tragedy leaving their grandfather to raise them on the Virginia Estate. Now their grandfather health is failing and they have to go back to where all the bad memories of their childhood started.
Their dying grandfather is requesting all 3 brothers come home. Jace being the eldest son and tries to bring his brother home not knowing where they where. Jace the Lawyer, Cadon the musician & Dalton the ladies man and billionaire. On the grandfather dying bed he made the brothers promise to work together and complete 2 task, 1st bring their legacy which is Grainger Aeronautics from going under and 2nd Get their father out of jail because he was framed from killing their mother.
Lets just say the plots thickens and Jace n his brothers now faces company secrets, trait secrets, etc etc etc.
Even though all brothers sound interesting If I read more of this series I would be really interested in the parent's storyline and what really happened and who killed their mother. Solid read... Available as a movie on Passionflix 2,5 stars
Decent beginning to the series. It was clear that Brenda Jackson was laying the foundation for the subsequent stories and as a result the Main Characters' stories suffered.
A Brother’s Honor is the remarkable beginning of Brenda Jackson’s new trilogy that features the Granger brothers: Jace, Caden, and Dalton. I would be hard pressed to pick my favorite of these men because they are all completely swoon-worthy! Jace is the oldest, a lawyer, and the CEO of Granger Aeronautics. Caden is the middle son and a professional saxophone player who sells out concert halls. Dalton is the youngest and a former NFL football star that after making some lucrative business decisions is now a self -proclaimed billionaire. Take your pick, because they are all successful, gorgeous, and very sexy!
We learn early in this book that Jace’s father was wrongly convicted of the murder of Jace’s mother and is currently serving a 30- year prison sentence. In his father’s absence, Jace’s grandfather has been overseeing the family business. Jace takes over as CEO after his grandfather’s death and Shana Bradford is brought in as a consultant who advises businesses on how to get back on track. The sparks between Shana and Jace fly, but Shanna is reluctant to mix business with pleasure. Thankfully, her reluctance doesn’t last long!
I absolutely loved this book! The relationship between the Granger men was so special and the chemistry between Jace and Shanna was, to say the very least, intense! Their first sexual encounter was so incredibly hot that I swear my kindle was smoking!
I also appreciated that this book is multi-layered. Jace and Shanna certainly take center stage, but there are many sub-plots that are explored as well. There is a minor suspense plot, a secondary romance that involves Shanna’s father, and the irresistible remaining eligible Granger brothers! Although this is Jace’s book, Caden and Dalton’s future love interests are introduced and I can’t wait to see how their stories will unfold!
Overall, a brilliant start to a promising new series! My one complaint is that Caden’s story, A Son’s Promise, is not due out until June of 2014, and that my friends, seems like an eternity away! It’s shaping up to be something VERY special, and I wish the release date were next month instead of next year!
Highly Recommended!
Thank you to Harlequin via Netgalley for providing this ARC copy for review!
Despite the book's strong professional heroine (business consultant with an MBA), there's so much underlying sexist ideology and male privileging here that I often felt I was reading an Old Skool romance -- bitchy ex-wife who has an abortion without telling our hero (but of course it turns out she was cheating on him, so, whew, the baby wasn't really his); heroine too clueless to remember that antibiotics can interfere with the pill, so of course she gets pregnant, and of course she doesn't have an abortion; opening scene where our hero is on a date with another bitchy woman who only cares about his wealth; another opening scene with a second brother who ditches the woman he's been sleeping with and we're intended not to have any sympathy for her, because he TOLD her he wasn't into having a real relationship with her; a third brother who can't stop hitting on any woman who crosses his path; an old family retainer (female) who cooks and loves these poor boys; etc. etc.
I don't think Brenda Jackson is going to be my cup of tea, alas.
Man, I really wanted to like this, but I don't even think I can finish it. The prose is so stilted and terrible, the dialogue is declarative and unrealistic, and she majorly tells instead of showing. It feels like she's talking down to the reader. Maybe if I try a different Brenda Jackson book? I had heard such good things... I'm so disappointed.
Reviewer's Thoughts Brenda Jackson is a master storyteller. I have read many of her books and loved each one. When I started to read this one I began to wonder whether this would be the first book where I felt Ms Jackson missed the mark.
The book deals with some very weighty matters from the very start. You dive right into the story. The housekeeper calls to summon the oldest, Jace Granger, to his grandfather's bedside. Edward Granger, the grandfather, has had a massive heart attack and probably will nor survive. After learning of his grandfather's grave situation Jace notifies his other brothers Caden and Dalton. The brother's have a unique relationship with their grandfather because he took them as teenagers after their father was found guilty of murdering their mother. Right away I sort of became hesitant because I didn't know how Ms Jackson was going to pull off a decent ---- nevermind good novel when she begins with the death of the grandfather and 30 year incarceration of the father. She's one of my favorite authors so I didn't want to read a dud. However, she pulled off an awesome romance novel with intrigue and multiple storylines involved.
The main romantic storyline is between Jace and Shana Bradford, an industrial consultant that specializes in turning failing businesses around. Jace and Shana try to fight their feelings, but it's impossible to ignore the sizzling hot chemistry between them. I love that Ms Jackson depicts her heroines as independent, fiesty, and unafraid of their own sexuality and Shana is no different. I nearly fell out of my chair when moments after they meet in her new office she tells Jace that they need to control his libido and her hormones. Shana grabbed the bull by the horns (so to speak)and acknowledged their mutual attraction. However, a blistering hot sex scene on her office desk days later cancels any chance Shana had of keeping their relationship strictly professional. Shana and Jace get their happily ever after with some suspense along the way and many steamy sexscapades. Jace is everything a woman could want in a man. He gives her pleasure the way she wants it, he's considerate, and he hums her to sleep while cradling her in his arms. I think I'm in love.
Ms Jackson was not content to tell one story, but she gave the reader glimpses into the other stories that will be told later in the series. I am currently waiting with baited breath for the next book in the series. Caden's high school flame, Shiloh Timmons, broke his heart after she refused to continue to associate with him following his father's arrest. Years later she attempted to reignite the flame but again left him with a broken heart.
Dalton is a lover of ladies. He meets a mystery lady that stirs his senses and other body parts but unfortunately he doesn't know her identity. She is none other than Jules Bradford, sister to Shana and a private investigator. I look forward to seeing their storyline progress.
Shana and Jules' father has also met a woman that for the first time, since their mother died, has him considering marriage. Shana is all for it but Jules has her reservations. Ms Jackson deftly weaves in a second chance at love at an older age into this story of 3 different romances, but she's not finished. It appears that Sheppard Granger, father of Jace, Caden, and Dalton, did not use all of the evidence available to him to prove his innocence. Now that Jace has found the evidence will Sheppard be free after serving 15 years in prison?
I loved, loved, loved this book. I admire Brenda Jackson's skill and ability to weave together so many interesting storylines in one book without detracting from any of them. Beware that reading this book will have you hooked for the entire series. It has the best of family love, steamy sex, intrigue, suspense, and old fashioned romance.
Another wonderful family added to the list. The Granger brothers definitely are worth getting to know better. Brought back home by their grandfather before he dies, they make a promise to save the family business. As they learn how to co-exist and run the family business.......love drops in. Jace maybe the strong leader but Shana is going to give him a run for his money. Sit back and let their journey engulf you as Shana struggles to be professional and Jace struggles to process his new discoveries.
I really enjoyed this book. I think Brenda Jackson finally has her mojo back. The storyline kept me interested, especially that bit of suspense that was thrown in. I really didn't suspect the culprit at the end so it was nice to be surprised. Looking forward to reading Caden' and Shiloh's story, seems like those two will have a lot of issues to iron out, and to see what becomes of the brothers father. I think this series will shape up to be a goodie.
Okay story; however, too much summarizing, too many flashbacks and incomplete threads. To me, account of all the flashbacks and summarizing, I did not get a true sense of Jace character and I was not caught up in the relationship....and such a quick and abrupt end to the story. I guess the various incomplete threads will be tied up in subsequent books.
That was a sweet, cute story with a touch of suspense but I don’t think it will leave a permanent mark in my book history. I enjoyed the story most of the time, but the narration was kind of slow and I had to increase the audio speed and it felt off all parts to be read by a male voice. I know the book was in 3rd person and this was another issue for me, because I’m not a fan of it, but there were distinct parts from the male POV and from the female. So this sounded a bit weird for me to be read by one voice.
It wasn’t a bad story, it kept my interest storywise. It had an intriguing concept and the final revelations managed to surprise me a little. It was a slow-burning office romance, slightly suspenseful, but it had its sexy times and some action-packed by the end. But the pacing was rather slow for my liking. However, I enjoyed the dynamic in this family and the relationships between the brothers. They were all fascinating characters and the other stories seem intriguing as well.
Even though this was a stand-alone and had its ending, there were plotlines that were left unfinished and open, so I believe the truths about them would be revealed in the next books, so consider yourself warned – this is not a fully complete story. Other than that it was an enjoyable read and I can’t wait to see what Passionflix would make of it. I love the actors they picked to play the characters. Thee look fitting. And I’m eager to see this book turned into a movie.
Somehow in all my years of reading romance I’d never read Brenda Jackson before. I am glad that oversight has been corrected. She’s on my list now and I am eager for the next book in the Granger series.
A Brother’s Honor reminded me a bit of reading a Nora Roberts novel. (And that’s a good thing to me.) I enjoyed the layered story, the family bonds, well drawn characters, suspense, intrigue and romance…
Also the fact that A Brother’s Honor is about a family with three brothers and it looks like it will be a trilogy! Roberts does those a lot too. :D I like trilogies. I enjoy getting to know characters better and following a bigger story arc over the series.
The Granger brother’s are called back to their home town to say goodbye to their grandfather. He asks them for a death bed promise to do their best to work together and save the family business and to prove their father’s innocence. They promise. That decision means they need to make some changes and start a new chapter of their lives.
These guys are a delicious trio. *swoon* Jace is the oldest and he’s an attorney. Caden is the middle brother and a successful saxophone player. Dalton is the baby and a player, but not a playboy, he loves woman and loves to make money. I enjoyed meeting these guys and seeing the ties between them and their differences. They were each unique and layered characters. They have each others backs as they pull together to discover why the business they inherited from their grandfather is in trouble.
I liked the suspense plot in this book too. The boys’ dad was convicted of murdering their mother when they were teens. They believe he’s innocent but haven’t been able to prove it. There is also the matter of the aeronautics company losing business. Jace calls in a trouble shooter to help save the business. I adored Shana. She’s smart, confident and brave. I loved the chemistry between her and Jace. Their initial interaction made me laugh out loud.
As the story progressed I was sucked deeper into all the characters lives. Yes. This book is Jace and Shana’s love story but it was layered with love between the brothers and Shana’s love for her sister Jules and her dad, who was taking a chance on love again in his sixties. I enjoyed it all! I admired Brenda Jackson’s ability to tell a rich story and make me care about so many people and yet still keep the focus on Jace and Shana and not make me feel jipped!
I definitely liked watching Jace and Shana fall in love. The chemistry was hot and though the word choices in the love scenes were rather sweet, there was still plenty of steam and heart. Yes. there was a story development that was predictable… but I liked the characters so much I could overlook it. :D I especially loved the part where he tucked her into bed. *sigh* I fell for Jace too. ;)
The corporate espionage was intriguing and I liked seeing how that played out. I liked seeing some story threads come together and am curious how the other subplots will play out. I want their dad freed from prison and the guilty person to take his place. I want to know more about Caden and Dalton and Shana’s sister. I want their aeronautics company to get back on its feet. I need more!
A few of my fav lines…
♥ “I believe we need to have a little talk, Jace,” she said coming to a stop in front of him.
….”What about?”
“Your libido and my hormones.”
♥ …All they shared was an attraction, and all he’d gotten out of it was a kiss. But it hadn’t been just a kiss, it had been the kiss.
He traced his tongue across his lips, convinced three meals later that he could still taste her on his mouth…
♥ There had to be a law against this much intimacy with a woman. If there was, they might as well handcuff him, put him in shackles, toss him in jail, and throw away the key. He was guilty as sin.
I recommend A Brother’s Honor if you enjoy your contemporary romance with steam and suspense. I loved the characters and the emotions and I will definitely be reading more Brenda Jackson!
I loved this one because it was not just about unbridled passion, it was a mystery. I’ve already started the next book to find out more about these characters.
As I've said before, I read no African-American romance books, yet I am an African-American female (proud to be a "hyphenated something", unlike some afro-american's! And I also identify as black. Black meaning sophistication and the beautiful absence of color; not terror, dirt, and death. I wish I were alive when that debate over: "don't call us negro! what country is negro!" was going on.. lol) Anyway, I am forever reading about whites. Some of the stories I read I tend to think of as being "too white", if you catch my drift. So I decided to give a celebrated black author of romance a chance. I feel like Lauren Bacall when she was talking about men: "Where do you find one? A real one? These days?" Well, this wasn't trashy.. or was it? Yep, it was kind of trashy and filled with idiotic writers flaws. He made her mouth water? As I've said before: Is he a man or a steak? Yucky writing! That's what this was. It wasn't realistic. The three grown-men boys were rich cry-babies. I couldn't respect a single one of them because they weren't written well. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.
This is new series too. How could anyone read Brenda Jackson?
I look at the reviews and it amazes me that anyone got anything from this. This wasn't even a fantasy. It was just whack! And like all the other books, I stuck it out as long as I could. I hung in there because I was doing the reading challenge and I had bought the book and I really wanted to say I read it. But it was not tolerable. I had to put it down when I realized the boys daddy was still in prison and the boys wouldn't bail him out even though they were millionaires. Then the people in jail were asking the daddy "tell your boys, maybe they can get you out of here." And he responded saying "Shhh! They have there own lives now." in some sentimental way. He sure enough loved his whorish, fucked up boys that had him rotting in prison for a crime they knew he didn't commit, meanwhile they had all kinds of money and connections and could've got him out years before this damn story took place. Dumb. Dumb. Dumb! I just dropped it when I read that. That was the end of this story for me.
Ms. Jackson gives us another set of sexy, take charge, wealthy brothers for our enjoyment. Author of those gorgeous Westmoreland men, Ms. Jackson now brings us the Granger Brothers. This scrumptious wealthy trio is reunited at the deathbed of their grandfather who extracts two promises from each brother. Save the failing family business and clear their innocent father of the murder charges of which he was convicted. The victim being their mother. A Brother's Honor is entirely different from the light hearted, romantic tales of her previous books but that is probably why I enjoyed this story so much. The characters are well defined and the plot moves at times too fast. The building of the love story between Jace and Shana is perfectly timed, with lots of sexual tension. Although this is Jace's story, both of his other brothers (Dalton and Caden), have significant roles in the story and they all bring their own quirks and baggage. Jace being the oldest brother is perhaps the most grounded of the three. And Shana Bradford, our heroine is typical of a Ms. Jackson heroine. She is a strong, independent woman whose life is not defined by her man. She is a perfect match for Jace. I really fell in love with these two and I can't wait until Dalton gets taken down by the one woman whom he really wants and has to work for, and for Caden to learn to forgive so he can move on. The love scenes are hot as usual in a Brenda Jackson book as well as having a strong plot. If you enjoy romance with a touch of suspense thrown in, you will adore this journey to the state of Virginia and the world of the sexy Granger brothers. 5 Stars *****
A Brother’s Honor is an exquisite start to a new series by master storyteller, Brenda Jackson about family and the ties that bind them. Fantastic characters, a deftly drawn suspenseful plot, and a sizzling attraction will mesmerize readers from the first page. The Granger brothers, Jace, Caden and Dalton are summoned to their family homestead when their grandfather suffers a heart attack and remain there to honor a deathbed promise to revive the family’s failing aeronautical business and to prove their father’s innocent of their mother’s death. As the oldest brother, attorney Jace assumes the lead role and hires the no-nonsense very successful attractive Shana Bradford to get help get the company “out-of-the-red.” The author is no stranger to developing strong sexual attractions and tensions in her novels, and the attraction between Jace and Shana will not disappoint as their relationship sizzles up the pages as family and business secrets and betrayals create unexpected twists and turns. I enjoyed how the author smoothly introduced the characters and the multiple storylines so the pacing flows naturally. The uniqueness of the brothers personalities, the secondary romance of Shanna’s father, the budding clues behind the death of the mother, the imagery of the Blue Ridge Mountains makes for a delightful read. While this strong novel is focused equally on the couple’s romance and mysteries to be to be resolved, the resolving of some mysteries and relationships also exposed more mysteries and budding romances leaving the readers begging for the next book in the series.
In trying to expand my reading horizons, I'm trying Romance, which I haven't read (as a genre) for over 25 years. This book seems so highly rated on goodreads that I gave it a shot.
I gave up after 50 pages.
Pros: The brothers had distinctive characteristics and I found it easy to distinguish them. The setup was dramatic, dealing with brotherly conflict and family dynamics, as well as a business on the brink and potential fallout for the entire town. This is the first book in a series, so I imagine that this drama is explored in subsequent books, making for a really in-depth exploration of these brothers' lives.
Cons: The style is not something I'm used to in edited, published works, but reminds me of a fan fiction writer without a trusted beta. The dialogue (both internal and voiced) seemed forced, not how people actually think or speak. There was a lot of "Caden grinned" or "Dalton frowned." Fine, if used sparingly or to detail a particular emotion, but the judicious use of phrases like this make me think this author is an inexperienced one (which is clearly untrue - this author has many credits to her name). There are so many ways to write that a character is pleased or upset or agreeable - they don't always have to grin or frown or nod. I was put off by this style of writing, and knowing that there are two more books in this series led me to cut my losses.
Is this novel indicative of the rest of the genre these days? I will have to keep reading to find out.
I would probably try another Brenda Jackson book, but a one-off, not the first in a series.
The tone of A Brother's Honor was more serious than I'm used to from this author. I have come to depend on the fast paced and contemporary sexiness of her Harlequin titles. However, A Brother's Honor was more of a long smoulder, with drama and tension lurking around each sexy corner. Think Dallas instead of Sex in the City.
And the more I got into the story, the more I understood the why the tone was the way it was. This was a very deep and multi-layered story. Not that it was overburdened with emotion, there was just a lot of issues the characters had to deal with. It wasn't just a story of a girl and boy falling in love, it was also a story of family--dealing with an incarcerated father, the death of a well-loved figure, a parent moving on after the death of a spouse. It was a story of secrets and communication (even miscommunication in some instances) and trust; and how families deal and cope with problems. This story showed how much the lives we live and are influenced by the friends and family around us.

2.5 stars. SO I really wanted to LOVE this story but alas I didn't. I thought the plot and premise of the story was good, I just felt the execution was the problem. I felt like the story was overly long and I lost interest at some points, and I felt as though the ending was just ok. Not sure I want to read Camden's story because I have a sneaking suspcison that I know why Shiloh ran and if it turns out what I think it will be I will be so disappointed.
Nothing better than sexy brothers that need to come back and not only save the company but find true love at the same time. Jace Granger is the male lead in this first book in the series and although he is the oldest he is not alone in trying to save Granger Aeronautics when his grandfather passes away. With a dad in jail for murdering his mother, Jace seeks out the help of Shana to figure out why the company is failing. Throw in a mystery as to what really happened to their mom, the brothers have a long way to go and I cannot wait to read more. Although I watched the Passionflix movie first I knew there was so much more to the book. I am so glad I read it and I look forward to reading more in the series.
An amazing start to a great series. I love the relationship dynamic between Jace and Shana and the slight mysterious intrigue that's in the book. I look forward to reading Caden and Dalton's novels and figuring out who killed Sylvia.
I enjoyed reading about the Granger men. Jace was a sweetheart. Him and Shana were a good match. I’m ready for part 2 because there are so many unanswered questions.
