I got a CD boxset of the first twelve Yes albums, and Bleach seems to go oddly well with Close to the Edge. I feel the stars align somehow and something cool always happens when Wakeman's harpsichord kicks in on "Siberian Khatru." Today, it was the start of the fight between Yoruichi and Soi Fon in Volume 18. I didn't make note of yesterday, when I read Volumes 16 and 17, but there were two things, kinda; the CD has the bonus tracks, including the alternate take of "Siberia" which removes harpsichord in favor of organ, but it still lined up with something cool. I just don't remember what. Renji's Bankai, maybe.

Anyway, something funny about this omnibus is Ichigo isn't credited in the Characters section at the start of Volume 17. Dude simply isn't in the volume at all, or at least not in any notable capacity; he's training Bankai off-panel the whole time. It's easy to dismiss Bleach as "The Ichigo-does-everything-notable Show," but it's not accurate, or at least not for the Soul Society Arc - which, admittedly, is the furthest point in the series with which I'm especially familiar.

It's interesting to read this manga roughly concurrently with Naruto as, for whatever reason, I guess I just followed Bleach for longer, and am accordingly more nostalgic for a longer stretch. At this same point in Naruto, that is to say Volume 18, I didn't have any real sense of Nostalgia at all, beyond a youthful lust for Tsunade, I guess. My nostalgia for that series peaked with the Chūnin Exam tournament, whereas with Bleach I'd seen at least to Renji's Bankai, and at least played contemporary Nintendo DS games which included Ichigo's Getsuga Tenshō (or maybe it was only the second game that had it?). But it's also probably notable that this Soul Society Arc has been longer so far than any arc by this time in Naruto, pretty sure. Hard to say, when the Chūnin Exam bleeds pretty smoothly into the Konoha Crush, and I don't feel like checking to make certain....

****

Miscellaneous thoughts:

I've only just recently "noticed" this, but Kubo is definitely shedding backgrounds by now, as he'd come into infamy for later on.

I don't recall if I've bitched about this earlier, but I'm constantly annoyed by VIZ having everyone do G-rated swears like "Blast!" and "Darn!" Meanwhile, most fights have dudes exploding high-pressure blood-spray. And Rangiku's immense cleavage is staring me right in the fucking face. Like, the manga gets a Teen rating anyway, so why not just say "Damn"?

I appreciate how Yamamoto knocks Nanao out with his spiritual pressure alone, like Kubo invented Haoshoku Haki many years ahead of its introduction in One Piece. Of course, it's a somewhat common trope in general, and Shanks arguably used it way in the beginning of Oda's series, against the Sea King, but still.

Messy-haired Rukia in the flashback in Chapter 134...! 🥵🥵🥵

Soi Fon armpits and exposed hips, as well. And shout-out to the Nintendo DS games for her Shikai. Which I've always mistaken as a Bankai for some reason. I guess because of its killing power? We would play the DS games on the bus coming home from middle school, and everyone would waste time with Byakuya or Toshiro or White Ichigo, while I'm over here dabbing on everyone with the Chinese lesbian ninja.

This volume is the first time I see the writer straying from the main storyline. While Ichigo and his group are the protagonists this volume barely did anything with them. It is great for us to get to know all these soul reapers but forgetting about the protagonists and main characters felt odd. A lot of the battles where inconsequential, there was no real plot or reason for their occurrence other than to see the characters powers or just to see a fight. It was entertaining but I wish they would have had a better reason than just to fight.
In spite of that, the character development for Renji has been great, he has gone from annoying to one of my favorite characters really fast. In addition, the way to use Bankai's to make the characters more interesting and give the fights a new level was also a huge step forward in keeping a shonen manga entertaining.
With so much time spent outside of the main group, we got to learn about a lot of soul reapers who have pretty cool abilities but sadly one-dimensional personalities. Gin could not scream of "I am the creepy antagonist" more, does he even have eyeballs? I liked Kaname a lot, from the short time we got learning about his character I got a lot of depth and a feel for who he is. The friendship he and Komamura (who is so cute) is very precious and something I hope we get to see more of in the future. The creativity behind the Bankai's and powers for each character is quite outstanding and really impressive.
Every time we have a Kenpachi fight you know you will be entertained. He and Renji are probably my two most favorited new characters. Rukia as a character has surprisingly also grown on me. I liked her before but now we got to understand and get a glimpse into who she was during her early days within the soul society. We have been needing more from her as a character for a while so using flashbacks was a really good choice.
Now with the finale of the story arc near, we are getting some major action with the top tier battles. I am most excited for the Ichigo and Byakuya fight. I don't like Byakuya at all, and probably never will.
On to the next!

bleach is a comic book that essentially gets by on charisma. the story of the soul society arc is fine, a bit contrived; the backstories for the characters are similarly passable. many of the emotional beats feel more than a little unearned. but the interplay between characters is fun, the fights are dynamic, and the designs are slick. i especially enjoy the senior captains kyoraku and ukitate, and the kenpachi versus tosen fight is one of my favorites — an interesting, weird ability beaten by pure guts and instinct.

Ichigo finally achieved Bankai, some of the Soul Reapers captain and assistants are helping Ichigo and friends to save Rukia and the battle rages all over the Soul Society. This is volume 6 of Bleach and typically, even though still entertaining, not much of a plot revealing until towards the next volume, will conclude the first major arc story that will become the main plot for almost the entire run of the manga. Still enjoyable even though not much of a plot.

- Jûshiro Ukutake and Shunsui Kyôraku versus Genryû Sai (Beginning)
- Yoruichi Shihôin versus Soi Fon (Beginning)

3.5⭐

There were aspects that I really enjoyed - Kenji and Ichigo, learning more about Rukia's past and the fact paced action. However, there is such an overload of characters, especially minor ones... I don't know who a lot of these people are or who they are connected to...

Also, wanted more Ichigo.

Okay, I know I'm rating all of them a five, but this is one of those series that keeps me glued to the pages. Intrigue and depth of the story unfolding, Ichigo and his friends had inflitrated now the whole of soul society is shaking. Things aren't as they seem. . . what brews in the depth. I am enjoying my reread of this series.

Three solid volumes.

Main major points: Bankais.

Good character development for some of the captains, because one gets to know some of their motivations.

Good set-up for the next volumes and the climax of the soul society arc.

Massive improvement over the last omnibus, way more than just constant action and power level hikes. The relationships hit better, and the things we find out are of more interest than in the last omnibus. It's handling the climax really well.

Back to the Soul Society we go, and…

Apparently someone played Saliva’s ‘Click Click Boom’ when I was gone, because everyone is getting into a fight and there’s bloodshed and bankais going off like guns, and then Ichigo stopping Rukia’s execution…

This volume was a whole ass mess…

But yet I loved it and I can’t wait to jump into the next volume and see how all of this went down.

I love this series so much, especially when the story is this good.

So much characters growth across the board, so mane reveals, so many awesome action scenes! Constantly kept at the edge of your seat even when you know what is going to happen (thanks anime). It is one of the few manga where your rout and care about side characters to the point where you hope no one dies.

Such a great manga!

My review doesn't contain any spoilers for this volume but I can no longer refrain from occasional spoilers from previous volumes.

Vol. 16: Night of Wijnruit - Best part of this volume is that in a flashback story we learn the truth about what happened to Chad's brother, who killed him and Rukia's part in it! Loved it. Otherwise the gang is *still* trying to save Rukia, her execution is imminent now and Ichigo continues to train while battles with the Soul Reapers continue with Gin causing trouble and ending with another major battle against Kenny. An action-packed volume. (3/5)

Vol. 17: Rosa Rubicundior, Lilio Candidior - Another pure action volume. There is a power struggle going on between the various Soul Reaper captains, some wanting to help save Rukia. So the volume is pretty much filled with battles of good captains vs evil ones with Gin slinking around spreading his evilness. The captains and Rukia are the main characters and we see little of any of our other main characters save Ichigo. Not a particularly exciting volume for me but it moves the plot finally up to the hour of Rukia's execution. How, and will, she finally be saved in the next book? (3/5)

Vol. 18: The Deathberry Returns - Great mid-battle ending between two surprising combatants! This volume feels like it is at the apex of the climax of the "save Rukia" plot we've been on for several volumes now. Loyalties have divided and the "bad" side consists of the really nasty guys now. Still unsure if anybody's going to actually be friends after all this is over but we'll have to see. An old character who only appeared in one volume a long time ago has come back and I think she may be part of the final conclusion, which seems to be coming in the next 3-in-1 volume. Good ending to this book. (4/5)

Momo turned her sword on Toshiro, thinking that he killed Aizen. Matsumoto saves her from Gin stabbing her, revealing that they have backstory. Rukia's execution is moved up to tomorrow and Renji comes to train with Ichigo. Ukitake remembers Kaien's death and its impact on Rukia. Orihime goes with Kenpachi to rescue Chad, Uryu, and Ganju to assist Ichigo. We also get introduced to Tosen, Komamura, and Soi Fon. Kenpachi is off trying to save Ichigo and fights Tosen and Komamura who intercept him. Renji fights Byakuya and reveals that he has unlocked bankai and is thoroughly beaten by Byakuya.
Gin meet Rukia on the bridge towards her execution and pretends to offer her escape. This was probably my favorite scene ever!!!
Tosen unleashes his bankai on Kenpachi and he defeats Tosen. Komamura is about to fight Kenny when the sokyoku goes off. Everyone runs to the execution. Hamaro heals Renji.
The sokyoku activates to kill Rukia, but Ichigo appears and deflects its energy. Kyoraku and Ukitake break the sokyoku. Ichigo given Rukia to Renji while he holds the soul reapers off. He and Byakuya fight.
Angered that Kyoraku and Ukitake destroyed the sokyoku, Yamamoto challenges them to a fight.
Soi Fon and Yoruichi duke it out and have an interesting backstory than what was given in the anime.
