Eiichiro Oda (尾田栄一郎, Oda Eiichirō) is a Japanese manga artist, best known as the creator of the manga and anime One Piece.

As a child, Oda was inspired by Akira Toriyama's works and aspired to become a manga artist. He recalls that his interest in pirates was probably sparked by the popular TV animation series titled Vicky the Viking. He submitted a character named Pandaman for Yudetamago's classic wrestling manga Kinnikuman. Pandaman was not only used in a chapter of the manga but would later return as a recurring cameo character in Oda's own works.

"listen to me, there's no magical panacea that can cure everything in this world. thats precisely why we need doctors! Kindness alone can't save people! you need knowledge and medical skill to go along with it! whithout it, you can't save a single person!"

Tony Tony Chopper. Man. Reindeer. Legend.

I really liked this omnibus, although yet again I struggled with the rapid change in action scenes when the pace picked up. Chopper's arc was surprisingly touching too.

As we finish up the Drum Island arc and move on to Alabasta, we are introduced to several key characters, including:
- Humanoid reindeer and pirate-admiring young doctor Tony Tony Chopper
- Luffy’s older (adoptive) brother, “Fire Fist” Ace*
- Gender-queer secret agent Bon Clay
- The Bond villain-ish Sir Crocodile, and…
- A beautiful and mysterious lady in a cowboy hat (currently Crocodile's right-hand woman)

* Although THANK GOD the anime changed the Whitebeard Pirates insignia that’s tattooed on his back! Seriously, Oda…if you need a footnote to make us not be primed to hate the character, maybe pick something else.

Continuing on from the last volume: the Straw Hats have to get a dangerously feverish Nami to Drum Island’s one remaining doctor, who lives high up a mountain. Sanji and Luffy take on the task, with Sanji first nearly dying to make sure Luffy and Nami survive , and then Luffy having to carry BOTH of them Considering the levels of Looney Tunes resiliency Luffy has, it is impressive how well Oda conveys through the visuals how tough this climb is!

It appears that Oda heard “Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer” and thought: “Cute song – but it’s kinda fucked up that Rudolph only gets to be accepted because he is USEFUL.” Chopper starts life as a reindeer calf rejected by his herd – but his blue nose doesn’t DO anything. Things only get worse when he eats the human-human fruit, He’s taken in and named by the quack Dr. Hiriluk, but he still has an immense fear of rejection. Which makes it so heartwarming to see his face when he asks how Luffy can stretch like he does, and Sanji cheerfully replies “He’s a monster!”

Luffy also becomes very persistent about Chopper joining the crew before he even KNOWS what the reindeer’s most useful skill is – medicine. He just noticed that (Actually, manga/anime Luffy pretty much ALWAYS tries to recruit people before he witnesses their key skill, but usually after he’s seen something that reveals their character. I noticed this because live-action Luffy does it the other way around, like a more normal person would!)

Getting the explanation of why he’s called “Tony Tony Chopper” – he’s a tonakai (reindeer) with “strong antlers that look like they could chop trees” – explained the running joke where, later on, people keep calling Chopper a racoon dog. Not only are tanuki shape-shifters, but the words sound similar…so even if Chopper explains, people might not hear him right!

Vol16

Chopper’s two mentors are kind of terrible doctors in different ways. Hiriluk
Actually – is Dr. Hiriluk meant to be an inversion of Dr. Frankenstein? He does all kinds of weird experiments, but instead of making a monster and abandoning it, he FINDS a monster and calls it his son. Hmm…
Dr. Kureha, who becomes Chopper’s next mentor, is a VERY skilled doctor, but It’s just as well that young Chopper learned to combine the best aspects of his mentors/adoptive parents – meticulous knowledge, imagination, and persistence.

Funnily enough, the main antagonist of the Drum Island Arc just feels in the way of all this – which is exactly how Luffy treats him: with vague annoyance that they are even having to deal with this dude. King Walpol is an extremely selfish man
Luffy (grabbing Walpol by the face): I don’t care if you’re a king or not. There are things that matter more than power…
Walpol: …The Drum Kingdom is – uggh! – a member of the World Government! You’ve committed an international crime!
Luffy: I don’t care about that, either.

I’m going to wait to talk about Bon Clay as a character until their first arc is complete, but…OMG, translators, what are you doing? I get you may have skipped the slogan on the back of their coat in volume 15 because finding an appropriate explanation of “okama way” is tricky, given that the first word is a slur this character is proudly reclaiming. Some AMAB-people-with-femme-aspects-of-their-presentation in Japan have actually done this, and I’ve seen it pointed out that “queer life” would probably capture what Oda is going for here. But to have this character declare in volume 17: “I am a follower of the ‘oh come my way’ lifestyle!”? WTF is THAT? Considering they managed to get in Bon Clay’s song that goes: “This world is made for men and women. But when you’re me, you’re a man and a woman. That’s why I’m the strongest!”, AND the Q/A bit where someone points out that “Bon Clay” is based on a term for “year-end-festival”, like the female calendar-based code names, “so Bon Clay is a little of both, right?” and Oda responds “That’s right”…HOW do you screw up the rest? Of course, they also managed to mistranslate “Kung fu dugongs” as “kung fu jugons”, even though there’s a picture of the critter, so…yeah. Anyway, that’s one big reason this set of volumes can’t be quite a 5/5 for me!

The Straw Hats finally reach Princess Vivi’s country, the Egyptian-inspired island of Alabasta. She explains that the coup she is trying to stop involves Sir Crocodile framing her father, King Cobra, for capturing all the rain for himself at the expense of drought in the outer provinces, which has led to a simmering rebellion. She wants to find the rebel leader, who she’s actually known since childhood, and tell him what’s going on. The team have a bunch of desert adventures, including bumping into Captain Smoker again, and meeting Ace – everyone being amazed that this mature, well-spoken guy (who seems to be allergic to shirts, LOL) is related to Luffy! But finding the rebel army proves harder than Vivi anticipated, leading Luffy to declare that he doesn’t care anymore; he just wants to go punch Crocodile. Which is hilarious, and very Luffy, but he actually makes a good point: If Vivi actually trusts the Straw Hats to be her friends and help her…then it is silly to have the pirate who likes punching things wandering around trying and failing to carry out a diplomatic mission, when they KNOW who is pulling the strings!

CHOPPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEER!

Seguimos :)

Drum Island Arc was a straight banger; expertly done and unexpectedly emotional with a wonderful new character.
And I have a feeling Alabasta Arc is gonna be even wilder since it's the conclusion and climax of Alabasta Saga. The plot is becoming more interconnected and serious, and I'm loving the crew more and more. Plus the goofy humor is growing on me and I'm finding it hilarious.

This is one of the strongest volumes so far.

Finishing up our story with Chopper you get his full backstory. It's both heartwarming and heartbreaking all at once. The storyline in the past is the best part though the one running in current time is nearly jut as good. Then we get to a short break where we see Ace, Luffy's brother, which is great. Also more of Smoker is always a plus. Then we get to see Vivi's past with kazo, and it's really well done. Infact I'm loving this opening to the next major arc more than I remember.

Here's to a kickass action packed volume! A 4.5 out of 5.

Still building the team and the world. Theres beginning to be a trend with the story ( guy appears different island world, fighting mobe to the next). Still fun at this stage but if it continues like this for the next few volumes it might get a little stale.

Favorite moment: ACE comes into the picture!

This is a love-hate volume cause even tho I love Chopper, his arc was annoying because of the doctor.
Ace was a really cool addition, I even forgot about him in this arc.
Alabasta is starting!

Ace is AWESOME
Tbh the first two volumes of this omnibus were a bit boring, I appreciate the story for our new crewmate but it felt like nothing happened for a couple chapters (for the over arching plot)
They keep building up Crocodile and his upper ranks, so I cannot wait for the upcoming battles.

The First Two Volumes we start off with Luffy and Sanji trying to get Nami to the witch doctor on the top of drum drum mountain. When they finally get her there they had another problem the king that lived on drum drum mountain apparently he wanted his castle back from the witch and beef with Luffy and his crew. A battle took place and needless to say Luffy won with the help from Chopper a talking reindeer. Which the guys tried to eat earlier, that made me hold my sides laughing it was so funny. But after the battle Luffy asked him to join and with a little pros-wading from Nami Chopper said yes. They leave the ice land and continued to Princess Vivi's home land. Then we get a glimpse of the leader and second in command of Baroque Works, Mr. One and Mrs All Sundays, briefly.
In volume 18 They finally introduced Luffy's older brother Ace. He's not my favorite but he's close to it like number 3. in this volume they have the guys stopping at a busy port for supplies and of course in Luffy's case for something to eat. Where they attract to attention form the navy and the attention from his big brother Ace. Who works for Wight Beards crew another pirate captain who wants to be king of the pirates.

After getting a glimpse of Chopper in the last omnibus volume, we finally get a proper introduction and backstory of his character. The backstory was heart-wrenching, and overall I think this has been the strongest installment of the series so far. Excited to see the introduction of Ace, and curious to see how the Baroque Works/Alabasta story arc wraps up.

This volume is mostly dedicated to the end of the Drum Kingdom arc, and the start of the Alabasta arc.

While on the anime, that arc is what made me drop the series, here I feel the pacing works much better, and the plot is still funny and consistent, with some great action.

This is the closest I have come to giving a One Piece omnibus a 5 star rating. If I were reading these in single volumes I would have given volumes 16 and 17 all 5 stars. I love where things are going at this point. I love that the battles no longer feel kind of purposeless, I love the development of the characters and the dynamic of the Straw Hat Crew, I love our newest member Tony Tony Chopper, I love it all.

Drum island is pretty mid. The only highlights are Chopper’s backstory and Luffy’s climb to the castle. We get some good world building and the lead up to one of the best arcs at the end (Alabasta).

I love these old story arcs in One Piece. They're so gripping, and the characters are so easy to fall in love with and care so much about. Even now that the current story has progressed quite beyond these arcs, I still find the Baroque Works story line to be my favorite. I remember watching the anime for the first time and I didn't know how to handle all the excitement. lol My sister and I would watch episode after episode, sitting on the edge of our seats. Not many shows can get me so excited like this one! I really wanted these characters to triumph so badly.

That's why I love One Piece so much. It's so easy to get caught up in it and to actually care about the people and what happens to them. It's surprising, because even if the character hasn't had much screen time, Eiichiro Oda knows exactly how to get you to care about their plight.

Manga isn't my favorite story medium. I prefer actual books or TV shows, but it's still pretty great. The values and lessons that are taught in this manga are definitely ones people need to hear. I can't say that these pirates are my role models, but they are extremely inspiring!

5/5 stars. It never seems to get dull.

We’re on Alabasta now. Ace made his debut! A lot of the most memorable moments from One Piece come from this arc. It was the first arc where all the characters really split up, and everyone seemed to be facing a different foe on their own at one point or another. There’s also a death or two that have a pretty big impact on the arc’s story. If I remember correctly, this is also the arc that introduces Ponegliffs, which play a huge role down the line. We also get more Nico Robin in her Baroque Works era. Can’t forget the memorable Mr. 2 Bon Kurei! And who says One Piece doesn’t have any queer representation?

Looking forward to Omnibus 7!

This is a re read for me and I’m a chapter reader of op. I remember literally screaming when ace was introduced and on the very next page doc girl just changed the subject to gol d Rodger and the will of d and stuff. HOW DID I NOT FIGURE IT OUT ON MY FIRST READ OF THE BOOK???! I love that I finally understand plot that had been set up for hundreds of chapters! Best feeling ever!

Man, it's just absolutely insane to read 1100+ chapters of this manga, then go back to the third year of its lifetime and re-read. Everything looks so different from what I'm used to! But also not really because I'm used to the OG art-style in a different way, immensely Nostalgic. But there's so much space in the panels! Spreads without reaction faces all around the border! Clean lines! More blood, even!

I forgot that VIZ makes me suffer through this "Zolo" shit. I'm not surprised, but still annoyed, that they change Bon Clay's "Okama Way" to "Oh Come My Way." Is it just to eliminate a cultural reference to keep the manga from any real-world language? Or is it so the kids reading this won't Google "Okama"? I'm actually impressed they kept the manji in the old Whitebeard symbol on Ace's back, but VIZ has actually always been good about maintaining those and explaining the difference.

****

Volume 16: The avalanche knocks Luffy, Sanji, and Nami far down the mountain. The gang are attacked by snowboarding Lapins. Luffy randomly saves a buried Lapin, leading the Lapins to come to his aid when Wapol, Chess, and Kuromarimo attack a bit later. Luffy scales Chimney Mountain, passes out from the effort, and is recovered by Chopper. Kureha and Chopper work on healing Nami, Sanji, and Luffy while Vivi, Usopp, and Zoro are down in town doing nothing important. Wapol and his men go up to Kureha to assault Luffy again, and Luffy throws a Gum Gum Bullet during which several chapters of Chopper's beautiful and heart-rending backstory take place. The volume ends back in the present, with the Bullet connecting in a two-page spread.

Volume 17: Brief bouts of Sanji vs. Marimo, Chopper vs. Chess, Wapol vs. Chopper, Luffy and Sanji vs. Wapol. Wapol turns into the Wapol House, then uses the Munch-Munch Factory to fuse Chess and Kuromarimo into Chessmarimo. Dalton wakes up, so Usopp, Zoro, and Vivi try to help him join Luffy against Wapol. Wapol starts attacking Hiriluk's flag, which Luffy defends because of his love for the freedom pirates represent. Luffy tells Chopper they're friends, so Chopper is motivated to use his Rumble Ball against Chessmarimo, showing off his seven forms, defeating them with (I think) Kung-fu Point. Dalton steels his resolve to overthrow the king, inspired by memory of Hiriluk's words. Luffy defeats Wapol with a superpowered Gum Gum Bazooka. Chopper officially joins the team, and Kureha uses Hiriluk's secret chemical to make pink snow (resembling cherry blossoms) to send Chopper off. Ace passes a message to Dalton's men to tell Luffy to meet him in Alabasta. Kureha notices Luffy's name on a Wanted poster, and mentions the "Will of D." We learn Crocodile is a Warlord of the Sea, unless we knew that already and I just forgot when it was first mentioned. The volume ends with the Straw Hats realizing the rest of the highest Baroque Works agents will be waiting to battle in Alabasta.

Volume 18: The Straw Hats encounter Bon Clay, who shows off his Clone-Clone Fruit. Vivi doesn't realize he's Mr. 2 until he leaves, so the gang tie bandanas around their left arm to prove their identities in the future (and also to set up a nice moment at the end of the arc...). Smoker, Tashigi, and Ace all end up at Alabasta in close proximity. Luffy meets Ace after a bit of a fight/chase with Smoker. Ace gives Luffy his Vivre Card (though we don't know what it is yet). All the big Baroque Works agents meet together in Alabasta. The gang get to Yuba, where they meet Toh-Toh, kicking off a bit of a flashback that sets the rebel leader, Koza, up as Vivi's childhood friend. Crocodile is aware of the connection, and tasks the Baroque Works agents with preventing Vivi from meeting Koza. Meanwhile, Luffy decides the best plan for him is to go straight after Crocodile, ignoring the rebels.
