I started reading and collecting Agatha Christie books when I was 9 years old. I adored her books and still do. There is a great comfort, as an adult, in reading her books and acute observations of people that favours style over the penny horrors of sadism, torture, and graphic violence favoured by some authors.

INOSSERVATO...?
Un personaggio che potrebbe tranquillamente passare inosservato, il sovrintendente Battle... Se solo non fosse coinvolto in casi così particolari!

"Il segreto di Chimneys" e "I sette quadranti" sono infatti romanzi dalla trama complessa, ricca di indizi apparentemente sconclusionati, ma che trovano il loro posto incastrandosi in modo coerente e sorprendente. Essi hanno il grande merito di avermi fatto appassionare a questioni di spionaggio, che personalmente aborrisco per la mia difficoltà congenita a seguirle. Ho provato anche gran piacere nel ritrovare gli stessi personaggi, i quali, rispetto a Poirot o a Miss Marple, possono sicuramente essere ritenuti delle "comparse", ma probabilmente sono le uniche comparse scaturite dalla penna della Christie a cui mi sia realmente affezionata, perché per me incarnavano la libertà e l'intraprendenza tipiche della giovinezza.

"È troppo facile" ha un titolo che parla, visto che si tratta delle mie precise parole a circa 3/4 del libro... Poco prima che mi balenasse in mente un'altra possibile identità per il colpevole (poi rivelatasi corretta), così insospettabile da avermi fatto venire le lacrime agli occhi.
"Nessun essere umano può sapere l'intera verità su un altro essere umano."

Ma "Verso l'ora zero" è indubbiamente il migliore tra i cinque. In esso la Christie gioca la carta di un tira e molla che riesce ad ingannare il lettore e, alla fine, a lasciarlo sbigottito. Ma, andando al di là dell'adrenalina che mettono addosso il rapido susseguirsi degli eventi e dei colpi di scena, l'epilogo rappresenta sì il culmine della sorpresa (in una riunione finale che ricorda tanto quelle attorno a Poirot), ma soprattutto la forse più compiuta formulazione del principio che ha guidato l'autrice nella stesura dei suoi imperdibili gialli, ovvero l'analisi non solo del delitto, ma anche del suo background, con tutte le cause e conseguenze annesse.
"Il delitto comincia molto tempo prima. Un delitto non è che la conclusione di una serie di circostanze che convergono tutte verso un solo punto in un determinato momento. Le varie persone implicate vi sono attirate da motivazioni diverse e da luoghi diversi, per ragioni imperscrutabili. [...] Il delitto, quindi, è l'epilogo della storia. È l'Ora Zero. E adesso siamo all'ora zero."
