An e-book original action thriller by acclaimed author David Wellington.
Wounded Special Forces veteran Jim Chapel now specializes in missions improbable (and sometimes impossible). After confronting a Russian triple agent, Chapel must infiltrate a separatist militia group to track and seize contraband Russian weaponry. But the militia leader has his own agenda ... and an ace up his sleeve.
David Wellington is a contemporary American horror author, best known for his Zombie trilogy as well as his Vampire series and Werewolf series. His books have been translated into eleven languages and are a global phenomenon.
His career began in 2004 when he started serializing his horror fiction online, posting short chapters of a novel three times a week on a friend’s blog. Response to the project was so great that in 2004 Thunder’s Mouth Press approached David Wellington about publishing Monster Island as a print book. His novels have been featured in Rue Morgue, Fangoria, and the New York Times.
He also made his debut as a comic book writer in 2009 with Marvel Zombies Return:Iron Man.
Wellington attended Syracuse University and received an MFA in creative writing from Penn State. He also holds a masters degree in Library Science from Pratt Institute.
He now lives in New York City with his dog Mary Shelley and wife Elisabeth who, in her wedding vows, promised to “kick serious zombie ass” for him.
This is the second short novella that takes place after the first volume, Chimera: A Jim Chapel Mission and the first novella, Minotaur: A Jim Chapel Story. It continues the story of illegal AK-47 sold to white supremacist in the USA. The main opponent is done surprisingly good, his story is very strong and not what you’d expect. This makes it a better story for me than the first novella. Once again action packed and once again a victory against all odds (not a spoiler once you know that the series will continue).
One of my favorite authors is back w/ his favorite ordinary soldier. In Minotaur, Jim Chapel single-handedly took down a Russian arms dealer posing as a retired spy. Now it's time to track down the arms that were dealt... and deal with them! (It's funny because he only has one arm, hur hur, shut up.)
Things go wrong immediately (see: Wellington, David) and a million people in flyover country are at risk of being gassed. The US Army has no choice to respond, but the enemy is just as well equipped and US air power is quickly non-existent. The brutality reminded me of the fighting in any Imperial Guard story in Warhammer 40k.
In the previous short story, the interaction w/ the villain is cut short when the villain's trophy wife knocks Chapel out. After that, it's all gunfights until the knife fight at the end. This time, there's plenty of back-and-forth w/ the main antagonist. He's thought this through, he won't be distracted by Chapel's wordplay, and he does not get angry. This guy is actually scary.
I enjoyed the first full-length Jim Chapel novel, Chimera, and all this short story did is make me drool in anticipation for the next book.
Another action-packed ebook novella featuring Jim Chapel, the hero of Wellington's new series of thrillers. Picking up where the previous novella, MINOTAUR, left off, Chapel's hunt for a stockpile of illegal weapons leads him to a white-supremacist encampment in Colorado, where he uncovers a dangerous and deadly plot. As with all the Chapel books, Wellington weaves in references to classical mythology. Here, he nods at Achilles' use of the loyal Myrmidon mercenaries to fight for his cause at Troy. If you're a fan of the Jim Chapel novels, you're not going to want to miss these stand-alone ebook novellas, too. They're a lot of fun, and more Jim Chapel is never a bad thing.
Great short story once again by David Wellington. This a direct sequel to the first novella MINOTAUR and basically wraps up that story, which was i liked. This story like MINOTAUR didn't have anything beyond regular human badguys (opposed to what is seen in the full length novel CHIMERA). I'm really enjoying reading about Jim Chapel.
Can't wait till the next novel (THE HYDRA PROTOCOL) comes out next year.
Slightly better than "Minotaur", his other ebook entry in the series, but again no character development. The plot was better in this one than in Minotaur, however.
