I read Bleach years ago before Goodreads was a thing. So I’m re-reading and leaving reviews of the volumes I did not record. Eventually I’ll get to the point where I have left Goodreads reviews. This is a three volumes in one book edition and here are the reviews for each volume (also left as reviews for those volumes).

Vol 10: 2nd read
This is where yet again the story steps up the game. Giant boob cleavage woman helps the group penetrate the membrane around the Seirertei by firing the team from a giant phallic cannon. The good guys survive entry and now separated from each other the one on one fights this Manga is famous for starts. There is some drama among the Soul Reapers, cracks already forming in the ancient stagnant society.

This is where the Manga really shines, the story is still developing and the art is clear and crisp. Good stuff.

Vol 11: 2nd read

Meh, more running, more Soul Society drama. Fighting cannon fodder. 3rd string middle squad officer trying to get at Orihime defeated by Uryū. Still hard to believe Ganju defeated Yumichika. It pains me to know there are 60 more volumes of Yumichika going on and on about beauty (Sigh). The fight between Ichigo and Renji is good. It is not a bad volume but still.

I know the background exposition is for the readers and not for the characters. But dang sending Ichigo into the Soul Society with no intel or decent maps is just annoyingly bad planning. I mean Ganju is a local and still has no idea. But having read through the story once already we know who Urahara and Yoruichi are and they should have provided better maps at the least.

Vol 12: 2nd Read

Don't worry the guy murdered and staked to the building is fine he is on the cover of future volumes alive and well. Soul Society drama, and more drama, OMG drama - how is this Soul Society still a thing standing it is so calcified and stuck in ritual and prescient. No wonder the quinces kick the Soul Society ass so thoroughly in the soon future. Speaking of the savior of the Soul Society we get more backstory about Ichigo and the gang.

Then thankfully enter Kenny and things are looking up. At least there is a fight. His sidekick is such a foil and contrast to Captain Kenny who should never ever be in charge of anything but a jail cell because all he ever does is murder people and things. But I guess as long as he kills the right things and or people it is all good? Another sign the Soul Society needs shaking up.

But even better enter a hero (my favorite Captain) Captain of squad 8 and reluctant amazing fighter Shunsui Kyōraku. Never has there been a more fun, smart, lazy and wanting to avoid violence super murder samurai. I enjoy this captain a lot.

Well, this looks bad, I’m fairly certain Kenny is about to murder kill Ichigo and end the series early....

A little heavy on the battles and not enough on the story on this one, but still enjoyable!

Okay, honestly, I don't know what's wrong with me. Apparently it has been nearly four years since I read the previous 3-in-1 omnibus. And I would have purchased the first in 2016, so it's taken me about eight years to get through Volume 12 of the manga. I mean, I've read or watched most of this before, so it's not as bad as if I'd spent as much time crawling through something new to me (*cough*Berserk*cough*), but still.

I said something about this last volume or so, how it's somewhat disappointing to have abandoned cool monster Hollows in favor of Humans With Swords, but... honestly, the Soul Society Arc is just HYPE as fuck all 'round. It deserves its praise, for the most part. I say this, but I was surprised by how short the Renji fight was, which I imagine must have been padded in the anime and that's probably what I remember(?). The earlier Ikkaku fight was better. I guess it will be a while yet before Uryu gets his Captain fight (does he fight more than Kurotsuchi? I don't recall), but this omnibus ends with Ichigo fighting Kenpachi and Chad fighting Kyoraku (whose name I was totally blanking on the entire time before it's given in the manga, which is upsetting because I used to use him often in the Nintendo DS fighting games).

I'd totally forgotten Ganju was around pretty much this whole arc. And that Hanataro joined him and Ichigo rather early.

We get Rangiku, Momo, Yachiru, and Nanao here, which is nice. Kind of Soi Fon as well, but she hasn't been formally introduced to the reader at this point.

Today I learned Soul Society is called the same in Japanese. I was a little annoyed by how often VIZ would (uncharacteristically) retain so many Japanese terms here despite always saying "Soul Society," but the original Japanese is spelled to be pronounced the same. So that's neat.

That Aizen fellow seemed like a nice guy. It's a shame he was totally murdered for real and we're never going to see him again... 😏

“OH NO! POOR AIZEN! HE SEEMED SOOOOOO NICE!” - ME THE FIRST TIME I EXPERIENCED BLEACH.

As I dove into the 4th 3-in-1 Bleach Omnibus, I knew that things were about to start ramping up. This is a reread after all, so nothing is a mystery to me. That said, I fondly remembered the events I was about to re-experience. The action, sure, but also the mystery of what’s going on with Gin and Aizen and Toshiro as the plot thickens.

Then, of course, we come to Zaraki and Kyoraku, two of my favorite Bleach characters for vastly difference reasons.

With the former, the younger me who still made Chuck Norris jokes used to spend too much time trying to convince people who knew nothing about Bleach that Zaraki could take on the meme-fied Norris. Why did I somehow come to that conclusion? I have no idea. But the character has obviously stuck with me as a favorite for a long time.

Now with the latter, Kyoraku is a character I was kind of ambivalent about when I was younger yet as I got older, he leapt up to near the top of my favorites list. There’s just something so entertaining about the guy, I can’t help but love every scene he’s in. And the interactions between him and one of the core group members in this volume were fantastic.

Ultimately, this volume contains some of my all-time favorite Bleach moments. It doesn’t quite hit the very highest heights that come later, but it’s what I would call truly classic Bleach!

THE SOUL SOCIETY ARC

Basically this has been one whole ass ride. From being shot up in the air to being seperated, Ichigo and the gang are trying to find Rukia and bring her home. Ichigo meets Kenpachi Zaraki, a bloodthirsty Captain of the 11th division whom no one can cut at all. He’s like the original Mountain/Sandor Clegane, but much, much worse.

We also see Ichigo and Renji fight, but Renji lost and Renji tells Ichigo one thing: “Save Rukia!” before he collapses with his wounds. While all of that was going on, there’s some shit stirring up in the Seireitei. Captain of the 5th Division, Sosuke Aizen, was brutally killed, and was found by his lieutenant, Momo Hinamori, which is a big ol’ oof. Poor Momo was triggered and nearly got into a fight with one of the other lieutenants, but was put in jail. Then Rangiku came and passed her a letter from Aizen when he died, and it looked like he told her everything in this letter, question mark???

This manga was so good. It kept me on my toes and it had me on my toes, and I can’t wait to read the next one to find out what happened next.

I consider the last 3-in-1 volume to be mostly the set up for this arc even though it's actually part of it. We finally get to the fun Soul Society fights, my favourite arc so far (I mentioned in my previous reviews that I had stopped at the Fake Karakura Town arc, I can't remember if it was the manga or anime, a few years ago, I don't know why I stopped since I was enjoying it, I just stopped for some reason). This omnibus or vol. 12 just ended at huge cliffhangers with two major fights, both against captains. I'm probably going to watch all of the fights that took place in this book later since I enjoyed them and I don't know if it's just me but I sometimes have trouble following what's going on in manga fights because it's in black and white and or because there's too much going on sometimes. This whole volume was hype.

This volumes episodes are season 2 of the anime.

Overall, I loved this volume and this arc and when I get home, I will immediately start the next one.

It has started picking up steam. The real action and story begins now that we are inside the soul society. The new soul reaper characters are so badass and unique. I love the fighting styles and how each weapon is completely different. There are so many new characters we are meeting and as this world has begun to grow; quite exciting. I love Kenpachi a lot since he looks so intense and cool with his hair bells and eyepatch. I also really liked Chad in this book, we got to see more of his story and relationship with Ichigo, it made me love him as a character even more. I don’t really like Renji to be honest, love his sword and hair style, but there is something about him that I do not like at all. The captains are such a great addition to the cast since we get a new roster of multiple villains who are all very different. I do not trust Aizen at all, what happened with him was suspicious. Very excited to see the other captains and characters in action. Hope the squad can pull through!

In the fourth volume of Bleach 3-in-1 Omnibus edition, Ichigo and his friends are going to break into the Seireitei but due to high spiritual energy, they split up. In the Soul Society, they encounter many Soul Reapers (Assistants and Captains and other Adjuntants) and learn about them and their abilities. We also learn about the history of Rukia Kuchiki and how she was adopted, Ichigo and Chad how they met, other characters that soon we will see more of them (Renji Abarai, Kenpachi Zaraki, Ikkaku Madarame and more) at their beginnings. And... a shocking death that soon lead to an unexpected twist. To me, this volume is packed with adrenaline action sequences, learn more about Soul Reapers and origins. So far, this is still good and entertaining. Onward to the next volume.

At the start of the first volume (vol. 10) Ichigo and co. are about to be launched into Seireitei.
For most of volume 10 things are so so, action really picks up by the end with the fight between Ichigo and Ikkaku, so i think this volume ends on a good note.

As to vol.11 and 12 there is a lot to like about it:
- Ganju vs Yumichika, though not awesome is pretty entertaining
- Uryu and Orihime are ok too, especially Uryu, because Orihime is just the worse character in Bleach (-_-)
- I really like Captain Kyoraku, so the fact that he finally appears properly (kicking ass) is good too
- Captain Aizen does his little thing - which right now seems like "almost" nothing
- And the rest is Ichigo fighting a lot - i like the action scenes and fights

All in all i think this is a solid trio of volumes.

The Soul Society arc is one of the BEST in this series. So many compelling characters introduced. So much solid setup for future development and payoff. You meet all thirteen Captains and assistant captains, and even third-seaters and fourth-seaters. You get a sense of the tangled web of relationships and hierarchies within Seireitei. You realise that Ichigo really is THAT unhinged teenage nightmare infringing on a completely alien fantasy world, and how obnoxious (and how wonderfully radical) his presence here is.

Another great volume! The art is always super impressive. Ichigo keeps proving to be a very fun and badass character. I love how many characters there are within this series, and each one holds a special place in my heart. The anime is great, but I think I like the manga more. Mostly because of the artistic style that is present. Absolutely love it! Can't wait to pick up the next 3 in one volume! Highly recommend!

And the plot thickens... What seems like a simple rescue mission is small scale to more sinister plots and I am here for it.

This volume is a step up story telling wise for me. You get a glimpse of the bigger scope of the story and I live for the flashback moments of the characters. One of the few manga's where you feel each and every character feels thought through and has depth.

Don't forget all the action and humor to balance it out.

Looking forward to volume 5.

Just so good.

The action scenes are consistently good. They’re not the greatest ever, but they’re good enough for the story and that’s important.

The art style is beginning to change, which makes sense.

Got to see the soul society in high alert again. I wonder how many times that'll happen. I should start counting.

I know everyone says Soul Society is where it peaks, but honestly this is where it feels most like any other shonen. I liked it better in the Soul Reaper Arc where it felt more original. I guess I'd still call it a little more inspired than most other popular shonen, but under that subtle perfume I can still smell some mediocrity getting more and more pungent.

Ichigo is determined to save his friend Rukia. She had changed his life, he will stop at nothing to gaim access to soul society. But first, he needs his soul reapers power back. Beautiful story telling, plots within plots and you don't know who to trust. Bleach still remains one of my top 5 manga, it is such a pleasure to reread it again.

This may have been 99% fight scenes, but I'm actually really enjoying this world and the characters. I'm so mad that I don't have the next volume because I need to know that my huge baby Chad is okay!

I really loved the fights, and the showing off of new powers from the group. I liked a little bit less volume 10 cause it was more of a “preparation”, but volume 11 and 12 improves the whole omnibus with also some background story that allows you to appreciate more the characters.

I ship Chad/Ichigo so hard. like, i don't care if they're queer platonic or what but like, shipped.

I've also decided (due to that ending short story) Keigo/Mizuiro & bc of course Tatsuki/Orihime
Quincy dude can be the token straight.

and thus the Save Rukia arc continues....

love this volume because it introduces the gotei 13 and most importantly, some of my favourite characters in the series: ikkaku, kenpachi, and kyouraku. this is a 100% biased rating because i love them <3

its full of action though so it’s really a fast paced volume!!

While this review contains no spoilers for this volume it is impossible at this point not to reveal spoilers about previous events.

Vol. 10: Tattoo on the Sky - Oh! Wow! What an absolutely amazing volume. Pure action and plot the entire way through; getting deeper and deeper into the Soul Society workings as the "team" goes forward to rescue Rukia. Two new additions to the team are fabulous characters, one male and one female. They also have a mysterious back story that is just starting to be explored that is hidden within the Soul Society as well. There is only one battle in this volume and it is saved for the end but holy moly is it ever worth the climax. Ichigo meets an awesome opponent within the walls of the Soul Society and he is also an awesome dude who I'm hoping may turn out to work with Ichigo in the end. But for now this is a bloody battle like we haven't seen to date yet. So now that I've gushed, let me mention two minor things in this series that annoy me. Whenever something dangerous is about to happen or a fight is about to begin the background of the frame is covered in huge capital letters with the word "DOOM" and the artist, Kubo, has an irritating habit of drawing glasses on people so that one lens shows an eye and the other is empty. It is a strange look. So there, proof I'm not all gushes and am able to be critical about Bleach ;-) but this is probably the best volume to date! (5/5)

Vol. 11: A Star and a Stray Dog - This new story arc is fantastic. This volume continues with more of the same. The team is still trying to rescue Rukia. They have infiltrated the Soul Society and sensors have found that they have been breached so the team is being chased down and confronted in battle. Ichigo is front and centre for this volume with both Ganju and Uryu having prominent story lines as well. Everybody else at least makes a cameo so for all purposes a satisfying volume. Lots of fighting and battling with new characters, mostly Soul Reapers, being introduced. While they are all Ichigo's enemy at this point in time, I can't help but think that many of them will become "good guys" and long lasting characters. I hope so anyway as I really like most every Soul Reaper we've met so far. Plot isn't really forwarded much here but we do get some backstory on Rukia and finally discover Uryu's new special power he secretly learned in training several volumes back. (4/5)

Vol. 12: Flower on the Precipice - The search for Rukia continues. This volume concentrates on Ichigo and Ganju together and Chad as they all follow the trail to Rukia's prison and are confronted by higher and higher powered Soul Reapers trying to kill them as the intruders they are. This pretty much covers the whole volume. The last dudes both Ichigo and Chad are left battling are really ruthless opponents and we're left wondering how on earth they'll manage to defeat them. I am left wondering to myself though, why can't everybody just take a minute to talk to each other because I think that once the Soul Reapers hear Ichigo's story they will realize he is one of them and they should all eventually be on the same side. Though I'm loving the new arc, I am missing the actual soul reaping and battles with the Hollows. (4/5)

After reading the last 3-in-1 volume of Bleach (Volumes seven, eight, and nine) I couldn’t wait to get started on this one! Volume 10 follows the gang in their plans to enter the Seireitei via a very...dangerous route. Although a lot happened in this instalment, it seemed a bit lacking compared to the previous volumes. That’s not to say it wasn’t enjoyable, just a bit less impactful. It’s more centred in advancing the plot. But then I got into Volume 11 and I loved every bit of it! Ichigo and Renji’s fight is one of the most memorable so far and the revelation of Renji’s upbringing and his connection to Rukia is heartwarming. It manages to make the character a whole lot more likeable. And then we get to volume 12...I was not ready for this volume at all! The amount of bombshells and revelations in this instalment is incredible! And the end is such a good and dramatic cliff hanger that reading the next volume isn’t a need. It’s a must! If this was just a review of volume 10, it would get four stars but because of volume 11 and 12, I just can’t give it any less stars than five 💖 The Bleach series so far has be stellar, with each volume having epic and comprehensive fights, humour, and engaging characters.
