Jordan has his hands full running the publishing firm he saved from going under at the cost of his personal life. He doesn’t have time to date, but that’s not to say he doesn’t have needs.
Instead of trying to find a date, Jordan makes an appointment with a prostitute—something he’s never done before—and his companion turns out to be his high school crush, Gabe! Panic would ruin everything, including the chance at something real that Jordan suddenly craves.

I got this short 38-page free read from Dreamspinner today, but was a bit underwhelmed.

Jordan is a workaholic publisher who hires an escort online, only to have the escort turn out to be his best friend's older, jock brother, Gabe.

The same older brother that he's been in love with for 15 years, but hasn't seen in over a decade.

For the book to be about sex for money, the first sex scene was pretty abbreviated and the second one was only a few paragraphs, so I wasn't sure how to really categorize this one.

Was it a romance or was it erotica? I'm still not sure.

I mean, the premise was pretty hot, but I wanted some more...

The emotional scenes came off as slightly forced, although I truly wanted to fall into the whole "loved you for years", then reunited by fate trope.

The high school Foo Fighters concert flashback was nice, where Gabe's hands got a bit friendly and sensual with young, very willing Jordan during the closing song.

But if the longing was that strong and to be believed, I would have expected one or both of the men to at least poke (pardon the pun) the other on Facebook once in their long decade apart to at least say hello.

So a bit of a fail for going after what you want, guys. Men. SMH. That's gotta hurt, missing out on all those lost years.

So 3 *kinda-average-to-okay* stars for this free short story.

For me, this rent boy story was just so-so. It felt a bit cheesy and silly to me at times, and I actually found myself skimming parts though the story was only 38 pages. Not the best I've read in this genre.

I liked the premise and the idea of Jordan being treated differently than Gabe’s other client’s because he was special to Gabe. The moment they had at the Foo Fighters concert as teenagers was kind of sweet, although completely out of the blue, and liked that the memory of the song carried until they were adults and held meaning.

But even for 38 pages, it felt rushed, the insta-love was a bust, and the steam was tepid. Overall a quick read, but not what I was expecting

It started out well enough—great in fact—with the decent groundwork for Jordan’s character and his history with Gabe. But then came time for the sex. I had really hoped that it would be Jordan taking the initiative, but no, it was Gabe. Well, okay then, I can handle a man chuckling at the wrong time if it means the other one will find his spine and balls later when it really counts.

Except he never did. Jordan did make the mistake of walking out and leaving the money and he paid for it with wallowing—oh, I do love the wallowing—but he never actually had to risk anything. He didn’t have to leave his apartment, go back to Gabe’s house, knock on the door, and apologise. No, because Gabe was the only man in that relationship. He risked everything, again, and he made it easy for Jordan to accept Gabe’s apology.

Then there were the I love you’s; I didn’t buy them. They’d been crushing on each other since their teens, but they’d never really got to know each other, not then or not now. These two adults just claimed to love one another based on a fantasy they’d been harbouring for fifteen years. No. No. No.

And that’s why I’m giving this two stars instead of three. The wasted promise of the beginning soured what could have been a four star—maybe even a five star—story. Silly me for expecting more from a porny novella.

Short free rent boy story.
I have a thing for rent boy stories...and in this one at least Gabe wasn't kicked out or abused or used or living on the street..no you pay 1/2 up front via PayPal !
He actually, if I got it right, didn't really need to do it, he more or less wanted to, until Jordan shows up as a client.
I liked it a lot..up until Gabe shows up at Jordan's place..it felt very rushed and overly perfect after that..but its free and hits one of my favorite tropes..so I'm happy with it, for the most part.

This story was good but I felt it could have been better. The best part is when both men are finally having sex...their awkwardness was endearing and realistic.

Halfway through the story lost some of its steam.

Sadly the melodrama and tears were not needed. And the insta-"we found love in a hopeless place" feel wasn't as satisfying...well for me anyway.

3.5 stars - This was a sweet and well written little read. I'd have liked to see more about this pair, and I feel like the story could have easily been made into a full length novel. And as a side note, I loved the whole Foo Fighters link - I'm a huge fan and totally agree with Gabe and Jordan that Everlong is (still) their best song ;)

Sweet little story, if a bit improbable. Even though I am not a huge fan of The Foo fighters, it was an enjoyable read. :) 3.5 stars rounded up because this story deserves higher than the 3.35 average it currently has.

Happy ending?

Jordan and Gabe have both made mistakes, and it meant they never connected the way they both secretly yearned for. Both men have made choices in their lives they may regret, and even when they do manage to reconnect, it isn’t as easy as they might have dreamed. While this is a short, sweet story which feels a lot like a fairy tale, there is just enough backstory to give it some grounding in reality.

This one just didn't work for me. There were some inconsistencies and unrealistic moments in the story that just didn't sit well with me.

I liked the start of the story very much, Jordan and Gabe meeting up and their first sexy encounter. I guess I was a little disappointed that Gabe let Jordan off the hook too easily, It was Jordan who needed to atone and fix things between them. So the last half of the story wasn't too thrilling, a sweet and light read.

This is a sweet story. More sweet rather than sexy. But I didn't mind it so much because you could feel the story had a bit of heart. I felt like these characters genuinely cared about each other. Yet at the same time my only complaint would be spice it up a bit! Otherwise would've been a pretty perfect book.

Overall a nice story; I got distracted by the flashbacks and the last epilogue-like part was as if the author put it together rather incoherently.

Gabe and Jordan meet again after 15 years in an improbable scenario and live HEA in this short story of second chances. Noticed a few editing errors which I don't usually see in Dreamspinner books.

Review posted at The Armchair Reader.

This is a cute little story that is pretty well described by the blurb. Jordan is lonely, pushing into his mid-thirties and devoted to his career. But the real reason he doesn't have a lasting relationship is because no man can stand up to the memory of his first love, no matter how unrequited it was. When he was a teenager, Jordan was in love with Gabe, his best friend Elijah's older brother. The sad thing is that maybe, just maybe Gabe felt the same way about Jordan as he did him, but then again maybe not. When Jordan's friends pester him to develop a social and romantic life and take some time off work, he decides to buy a prostitute. When he shows up for the appointment at the man's house, who should answer the door but Gabe?

For the most part this story is pretty well self-described. It doesn't deviate from the blurb at all and it is rather short, so the blurb suffices to tell most of the story. I liked Jordan and Gabe well enough, thought I didn't ever really feel that connected to them. It might be because of the length, or it could be because in that small amount of time neither really stood out that much and the story was pretty generic. It was still solidly well written, it just didn't offer much from the norm.

The best parts of this story and the parts that really stood out and had some personality were the flashbacks. It is so surprising for me to admit this, I usually hate flashbacks, but they really worked for me. There are only a few, and they don't take up much of the story, but they have a lot of personality, showing the time Jordan spent with Elijah and Gabe during his teen years, going to a Foo Fighters concert and the way he felt connected to Gabe for the first time. I would have liked to know more about the friendship between Jordan and Elijah, however, and how Elijah feels about their relationship in the present. Somehow that seemed overlooked since they talk about him and telling him and the brothers' parents, but not how he felt about it.

This works well as a short. It is cute and sweet and definitely good for when you want a quick, painless read. I like this author and I always know when I pick up one of her books what I can expect (at least so far).

I admit, I started this in a bad mood and was prepared to not like it, due to the whole prostitute aspect. I expected some sad tale of woe as to why Gabe is hooking. Surprise! Gabe is really pragmatic about his chosen career, which was refreshing. He didn’t make excuses, this is what it is. When he is ashamed of it, it’s a byproduct of the two of them (confusing when I say it that way, but I do not want to spoiler it!)

Jordan spends all his time working and finally in desperation decides to hire a hooker, who turns out to be Gabe, his best friend Elijah’s older brother, the one Jordan had a huge crush on when he was a teen. He can’t hear Everlong without thinking of Gabe. To be faced with him now, in this context, ouch.

This is a short story so there isn’t much room for extras. There are flashbacks to when Gabe, Jordan and Elijah were younger and the concert that changed Jordan. I liked the author’s style, and that she didn’t make things extra difficult for the pair. Just enough for the length of it, and I was okay with the insta-reconnected-love. Recommended.

2.5 stars This was a nice enough short, but I rounded down a little just to emphasize the lack of depth. I enjoyed it but felt it could have been done in a way where I got much more emotionally involved

Sometimes, I like cheesy in my books. This is one of the book with long lost love. You know, after 15 years of separation, and they're never stopped loving each other kind of cheesy?
Entertaining. But, I think I'll get diabetes for the sweetness :)
Stopping being a prostitute after you've met the love of your life is good, though.
That's why I can give this one a try after all.
If you like your MCs being so in love, the undying love for so long, you'll probably like it.

very short story using the trope "i loved you a long time." The MCs meet as teenagers but 15 years go by until they get a chance to act on their love. That type of crap actually pisses me off because all of I can think of is the wasted time! Particularly when there was no real hardcore reason for them to be estranged for so long.

Not a terrible read, sort of like a mediocre Amuse Bouche that yeah sort of amuses your bouche and stifles the hunger for a little bit.

This started off fantastic and then quickly faded for me. There was a great deal of potential but sadly, too much was condensed into 38 pages accelerating the relationship between Gabe and Jordan, making it appear unrealistic and forced. The backstory was awesome, and if it had been expanded on a little more before they hopped into the sack, this could've been a five-star read for me. My rating falls in between a 2.25-2.5. It was okay but I wanted so much more. :(

Well, what to really say.....

Okay, so this does have the making of a good story. It really does. Unfortunately, there is not much story to it. It probably doesn't help that it is only 42pgs. It was overly simplistic and unrealistic. Seriously, it went from "Hi, it's you" to "I love you" in like two seconds flat. I am honestly surprised that they weren't married or at least living with one another by the end. In fact I'm relived.

This is nicely written. It's short, light and fun to read.

It is the story of a self-made publishing tycoon who finally meets his boyhood crush...his best friend's older brother (Gabe)...who now happens to be a prostitute. Gabe got into prostitution for the lamest reason ever.....

The history of Gabe and Jordan's shared love for the Foo Fighters was my favorite part of the book.

Quick free read. It was ok but it would have been so much better if it would have been longer. As it was, it made it a bit hard to take it seriously. But still, enjoyable 15 minutes of my time :)
