The book covers and combines both the personal development of the person Nick Cave and the history of his career. To a large extent, Nick Cave´s biography records and represents an entire generation and its attitudes towards life. The book is meant to depict parts of the puzzle Nick Cave, places them in their chronological biographical context and deals with deeper-going questions. Next to the text passages the book works with approx. 50% visuals - concert, band, back-stage and private photos. A comprehensive collage with newspaper cuttings with as much unpublished photographic material as possible and the artist's drawings which have never before been published shed a completely new unusual light on the person Nick Cave.
It's a coffee table biography, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised at how mediocre this is. Lots of pictures, but no captions, so if you want to know anything about them you have to flip tediously to the credits section at the end. As for the text, it was written in German originally, so I'm not sure if it was just badly written, badly translated, or both, but regardless this book is at best "undistinguished" stylistically. The content covers the bases, I guess, but superficially and laden with cliche. Cave fans might want it for the pictures, but otherwise, it's pretty disposable.
Part biography, part photo book, "The Life and Music of Nick Cave" contains great photographs as well as a brief biography of Nick Cave and his many projects from The Boys Next Door to The Birthday Party to his most famous work with The Bad Seeds. It also recounts the lengthy writing process of his novel "And The Ass Saw the Angel" as well as film projects Cave was a part of. Since the publishing of this book, Cave has since released several albums (Bad Seeds, Grinderman & film scores) as well as having penned a screenplay ("The Proposition") and is still cranking out quality material. Still, though this biography only goes through "The Boatman's Call" it's a good, quick read.
contains quite possibly one of the sentences ever written... but maybe that was just the translator's fault. anyway, there are some fantastic pictures. i swooned.
