Viola Brodure, gentlewoman and celebrated authoress, faces a personal dilemma suited for a novel--everyone wishes for her to make a love match with Ethan Penn-Leith, the famous Highland Poet. After all, the popular novelist and the famous poet are the perfect heroine and hero for their own love story. The problem is that Viola has never met Ethan, not in the flesh, at least. She has read about him and devoured his poetic writings, but does the man himself live up to his dashing reputation? Malcolm Penn-Leith exists in twilight. He manages his farm in the shadow of the Scottish Highlands. As the older brother of the renowned Ethan Penn-Leith, Malcolm tends to his prized cows while Ethan basks in the limelight. Harder still, Malcolm lives under a cloud of grief after the death of his wife five years ago. But then Miss Viola Brodure arrives in Malcolm's village and awakens a piece of his heart that he thought was lost in the abyss of his grief . . . Viola is surprised to find herself more attracted to the stoic Malcolm than the charming Ethan. As social pressures mount, can Malcolm and Viola overcome the weight of his past and the expectations of her future to forge a new path together?

3,5 stars, not a fan of love triangles (Ethan did not deserve their shit) but love me a widower who had actually loved and grieved his wife.

This was adjacent to good, but only just

This is a pretty generous three stars. I really found this to be quite boring. The beginning had promise but once the MCs met it was insta attraction with miscommunication and both of those tropes are not interesting for me.

The evil Duke villain was the only redeeming storyline in this. I did not care much about anyone else and trudged through this story when I probably should have DNF.

Also, I was promised a grovel and no grovel happened. 😡. The author mentioned it was necessary twice and then backtracked very quickly to a forgiveness with no apology.

Adjacent But Only Just is, without a doubt, one of my favorite historical romances of 2022.

I finished this book over a week ago and have thought about it every day since, and yet, I still don't know if I can find the right words to explain just how much I adored Malcolm and Viola's story.

This sweet Victorian romance between a Scottish farmer and an English author is everything you could ever want in a romance story, and yet it is so much more.

It is sweeping Highland moors and foggy lanes.

It is intimate, tender moments and grand gestures.

It is kissing in the rain and secret meetings at the swing.

It is grief revisited and dreams unspoken.

It is first love and second love and true love.

It is finding your voice and living beyond the confines society has set for you.

It is poetry and prose and passion, and the beauty of it all took my breath away.

If you read one book this year that I recommend, let it be this one.

If nothing else, read it for the first kiss scene alone. There have been lots of swoony first kisses in sweet romance, but this one leaves them all behind.

I received a complimentary copy of the book but a positive review was not required.

I don't know HOW she does it, but Nichole continues to constantly outdo herself.

You might want to skip my review if you plan on reading the first book and like to go in blind. This being said, this book was incredible. I immediately went and purchased a hard copy before even finishing this book because I knew it would be worth having on my shelves.

As I said, Adjacent But Only Just was everything I hoped it would be and more. This book takes on the story of Malcolm, Leah's brother as he navigates grief, and moving on 5 years after the loss of his wife. When he meets Viola...a renown writer in her time...there is an instant quiet compulsion that neither one can deny or wants to.

There are plenty of obstacles that get in their way and I loved that. I loved how every situation felt natural, and the conflict was justified. The progression from strangers, to friends to lovers was perfection and MAN ALIVE can Nichole write a swoony first kiss scene. I loved Malcolm and his quiet strength and intelligence that really brought out Violas best virtues as well.

This will be in my favorite historical romances of 2022. If you haven't picked up one of her books I plead with you to do so now! I'd start with the Brotherhood of the Black Tartan series that only adds layers of depth to the Penn-Leith series as characters in that series make wonderful appearances in this one.

FIVE FREAKING STARS and then some.

My faithless inner-blethering: “Entering very wary here. After my enthrallment with book 1, of course I’m reading on. And I could never say ‘nay’ to a stoic Scot. But, brothers quasi-love-triangle? Love-match widower? My jealous romance reader sensibilities tend to get irked. Plus, uh, is this a Victorian celebrity romance? Characters with literary vocations tend to take me out of it. They’re both painfully quiet? How are we getting the blazing tens-

*reads when their gazes lock amidst a fog-laced scene*

Me: NEVERMIND. We’ll be juuust fine.

Ok, not fine. More like overwhelmingly swooning to the high heavens. More like devastatingly mind-blown. I’m sorry, wha-how-huh? Ms. Van is like “You here for the tropes, the brogues and a stamp on your reader travels passport? Yes, but also and resoundingly, have some fathomless, heart-searing insights into human nature, healing and courage, characterization as solid as a truth boulder and a couple with such bone-deep connection and scorching, elemental attraction you won’t know what hit you.” Yes, that was most certainly her.

Let’s talk this magnificient third person DUAL POV. The embodiment of “The pen is mightier”, socially anxious, outwardly meek authoress Viola’s mind’s eye was a literary device wonderland. She grasps and collects parallel symbols all around, making for such a profound, vivid experience. This premise of her writer influence being puppeteered by a political power-hungry duke and her arc of letting her inner social justice champion/goddess manifest was great to behold.

And who was there to fan that fire? Turns out all an asthmatic wallflower needs is the humid Highland air and a brawny, sorry-maxed-out-my-word-count, competent, man’s man Scot to chase her anxiety dragons away. When a hero just has PRESENCE, amiright? That he dishes out soul-enlightening ponderings like it’s nothing, does not hurt at all. My gratitude for getting his POV knows no bounds. Can’t help compare but, while Fox gave me all the delicious frustrating angst, Malcolm is just the ultimate heart-trampled mature hero. His simultaneous battling of an intense insta-crush with awareness of his cavernous grieving journey, his flailing resistance as all his love-risk alarms are going off, but then his protective, yearning heart could not care less. The progression of his ascendance into the light firmly yanked by the collar by a spritely English lass was perfection for me, and I renounce my doubting ways.

I can’t but applaud how this is a master class in instant connection of an unexpectedly complementary class-difference couple that bring on both the depth and the passion. The way these two philosophical sweeties were at one moment dwelving into such complexities and the next just playfully bantering made me so happy. While not without its mostly external conflict bumps, the romance here was effortlessly kismet, self-aware and prime to let social pressures and expectations take a brisk walk off the Rocks of Solitude. One of those where you know it’s an absolutely secure HEA. That resolution scene was beyond good, and then a time jump epilogue? I repeat, wha-how-huh? Too much!

On to our darling poetic peacock’s comeuppance, of course.

Content notes: kissing only, but good ventilation required ‘cause wowee. Predominant theme of grieving spouse/stillborn death. Heroine suffers from social anxiety that exarcebates physical symptoms. Teensy bit of language (a*s, da*n)

This is my favorite love story Nichole has ever written.

There. I said it. I'm calling it- right here, right now. The gauntlet has been thrown, the gloves have been taken off. THIS BOOK IS EVERYTHING! That is my truth. You'll read a lot about truths in this book and my heart is full to bursting with everything this book made me feel.

I have BIG expectations going into every Nichole Van book and I am always amazed that I am never, ever disappointed. With all of her other books, this was unputdownable and I happily gave up a night of sleep to read this from beginning to end.

This is a story of grief/loss, opening up your heart, finding yourself, finding your strength, forgiveness, family, integry, acceptance, and allowing the greatest risk of all to take control. I was moved by both of these characters. Malcolm is a sentinel. He has such a quiet strength, but will defend what he believes in with everything he has. My heart broke for him in book 1 of this series. I LOVED watching his character arc and journey. DO NOT MISS OUT ON HIS STORY! Viola was fresh and new and yet, familiar and likeable right from the beginning. She was flawed and had weaknesses and has a story that needs to be told.

I marked over 100 passages from this book. This book is everything and more. All of your Scottish dreams will come true with this book.

Thank you Nichole for another remarkable story that has filled my heart to the brim. As it said in your book, 'as any good writer knew, the small details told a larger story.' THANK YOU for the details you put into your work. Your writing is unparalleled and a true joy for every reader!

Thanks to the author for the copy. All thoughts in this review are my own.

Content: minimal amount of bible swears and talk of drinking.

“When I realized how deep ye had burrowed in,” he tapped his chest, “I panicked a wee bit. My life had formed around my grief, ye see. And I was comfortable in that place. The thought of truly living again—of placing my heart once more within another’s frail body—when I know only too well how risky that prospect is. .

Thank goodness that Nichole Van is setting the bar for me with clean romance! She is an INCREDIBLE writer penning her pages full of passion, tension and incredible angst. Her descriptions coupled with the emotional aspect you already feel for her characters (especially her heroes), set the synapses of my brain off!

The fist clenching, neck straining, corded muscles and forearm porn—kill me nowww!

“Of course, as her nose was all but pressed into Malcolm’s throat, she caught a heady lungful of him, too—man and wool, woodsmoke and hay.” I need this as a Scentsy wax bar please! Don’t get me started on Malcolm, a bear of a man, full of pain from losing his wife and child 5 years ago. Viola comes into his life and tears his heart up! The love triangle was unnecessary between the two brothers, but I get it and I’m looking forward to hopefully seeing more growth in Ethan, the youngest brother’s story up next. I can’t fault him to bad. He can’t help that he wasn’t Malcolm.

Don’t mind me..I’ll be here reading Nichole’s entire backlist!!

3.5⭐This book was one of those books that were enjoyable for the most part to read but too angsty for me. It was filled with beautiful poetry, literature, grief, and swoony-loving tender scenes... complex and flawed characters. Disappointed and a bit annoyed by the miscommunication and the inability, to tell the truth to Ethan. And repeating the word my truth doesn't mean the truth it's just what I feel.

“She has a vagabond heart and a banshee soul. She longs to wail a lament for the lost and downtrodden, to scream her truths to the world, demanding change and justice. She has only begun tae explore the greatness of her talent. She doesnae need me tae proclaim her truths!”

Oh my heart! I loved this story when I read it as a novella, and the author has enriched it so much in this full length novel. I'm so happy that she has expanded it to an entire series to include the stories of all the Penn-Leith siblings. In the first book of the series we see Malcolm's personality before it is altered by his intense grief. I loved that glimpse into his past, and in this book he is emerging from the darkness, changed, yet with the same foundation. It's no wonder Viola is drawn to his thoughtful and gentle maturity that contrasts with his brother Ethan's flighty gregariousness. She and Malcolm have a sweetly intense chemistry and I loved their special moments together as they acknowledge the bond and connection they feel. Viola faces pressure to conform to the expectations and standards of others, but the landscape of the highlands and Malcolm's quiet encouragement gives her the courage to grasp the freedom that she so desperately desires. I love the poetry woven into the story and the influence it has on the characters. I'm earnestly awaiting the next book in this enthralling series!

cute… but I had to skip over the middle bits because..

The heroine is so annoying with her cowardice throughout. 🫠🫠 if there’s ever a moment when a ‘damsel’ makes you want to throw a book - this is it.

I actually really enjoy the writer. Just not this one.

I don’t even know how coherent this will be because I am fully obsessed with all things Nichole Van and this book was another five star read from one of my favorite historical romance authors.

This book holds one of my biggest triggers: a widow/widower. I loved the way Van handled Malcom and his tender heart. The heart that missed his wife but also was starting to beat for someone new. I can’t count how many scenes and conversations had my eyes going misty. There were profound sentiments towards grief that I think would resonate with anyone who’s experienced a loss in their life.

AND VIOLA. She is my new favorite female main character. Because guess what? Being shy does NOT mean you are not also fierce and tenacious. It does not mean you’ll stand to be walked all over. I LOOOOOOVE that I got to read about a shy (hi, it’s me) woman who was a force and showing all that it’s not a weakness.

THE ROMANCE??? Holy heck. The fire between these two was off the charts. I loved the slow build. The nuanced looks and casual run-ins that turned to deep conversations. And when Viola went after what she wanted? I was squealing with joy at how an entire scene played out.

There’s even some cameos from some of the best men of The Brotherhood of the Black Tartan series. The epilogue is EVERYTHING. And I am in desperate need of Ethan’s book.

Overall audience notes:
- Historical Romance
- Language: very little
- Romance: make-outs
- Violence: low
- Trigger/Content Warnings: blackmail, loss of a spouse (recounted), depictions of grief, asthmatic attacks

Love, love, love.♡♡♡ This was just... exquisite.

This is easily one of my top favorite historical romances of the year.

I absolutely loved Viola and Malcolm. Viola is sweet and passionate; she just needs a little encouragement to find her voice. Malcolm’s presence is gentle and calming and pleasantly masculine. They have an instant connection that is deepened through intelligent, thoughtful conversations and the sweetest (and swooniest) romantic moments. I loved their little meetings by the swing, and their first kiss was just delicious. Even with their flaws I couldn’t help but love them. The way Ms. Van wrote of Malcolm’s grief and his inner struggle of finding love after the death of Aileen felt so genuine. I loved getting to watch him open up his heart again to love after experiencing such a deep loss.

The romance is heartfelt and tender, the character development is excellent, and the setting is gorgeous. Do yourself a favor and add this to your TBR.

9/28/22 Such a lovely, lovely historical romance. I really like this author and this book did not disappoint. The story contains some very beautiful lines on grief and love and for that point alone, I can see myself reading this book again in the future.

5/4/23 This time through I listened to this beautiful story and loved it just as much as the first time. The third book in the series is coming out soon and I am excited to see what lies ahead for Ethan.

It has been awhile since I read Love Practically but I was glad to get into Malcolm’s story and see him get his happily ever after. I loved the Scottish brotherly banter between Ethan and Malcolm. Love Practically had some heavy themes but this one was a little lighter, even while Malcolm dealt with his own personal grief. His care and notice of Viola’s true character was such a sweet story. All of my reader friends have said this in their reviews but I can’t help but repeat it - Nichole Van can write a swoony kissing scene like no other! The chemistry between these two when they stopped fighting it was so good.

“If he couldn’t live without her, then he had to conquer the fear of living with her.”

Nichole Van is one of my favorite authors! I love her books! They’re filled with humor, wit, and heart achingly beautiful romance. Adjacent But Only Just has to be one of my new favorites.

I loved the setting of 1840’s Scotland. The dialogue is amazing! I enjoyed that Scottish brogue and it comes through so beautifully in the author’s writing.

I loved Malcolm and Viola. Their love story is so tender yet passionate. Malcolm is a Scottish gentleman farmer who lost his first wife and child due to complications from childbirth five years ago. He’s not looking for romance, but when he meets Viola there’s an attraction there that’s undeniable. As he draws closer to her, will his fear of losing her prevent him from risking his heart?

Viola is a brilliant English writer but so shy around others. She also suffers from asthma and it’s especially triggered when she’s in a stressful situation. When she first meets Malcolm, he’s literally like a breath of fresh air. He calms her and understands her in a way no one ever has. Unfortunately, she’s visiting Scotland to meet his brother who’s a famous poet. What happens when the man she’s intended for is the wrong man?

My friends, I can’t recommend this book high enough! Several days later and this book is still with me. It’s one of those that will make you want to quickly reread it. There are so many amazing scenes in this story. I loved the swing where Viola frequently meets Malcolm, the chained-stone throwing where the brothers tell their truths, the rain scene, and the metaphor of the gloves. It’s swoony kisses, second chance love, heartbreaking grief, and even a villain in the form of a manipulative, power craving Duke.

This book is definitely one to put on your TBR list. If you love well-written, poignant, historical, witty romances set in gorgeous Scotland, you’ll adore this. While it’s part of a series, it can definitely be read as a standalone. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series. I received an advanced complimentary copy from the author. All opinions are my own and I was not required to provide a positive review.

3.5⭐️ This had some good moments as well as eloquent explanations for love and loss. There was also an unforgettable description of dogs, “Unlike cats or horses, dogs were living sunshine, endlessly happy with themselves and the world.”

But with that said, the story dragged on for far too long. Viola and Malcolm’s thoughts were on endless loops about how they should move forward. I didn’t keep count, but six times would be a reasonable ballpark figure. Given the book’s summary explained it was an extended version of a novella, it felt like unnecessary filler.

Also, the multiple third act dilemmas pressed my angst overload button.

Ms. Van is a phenomenal writer. Her books are always so well written and engaging. I always get caught up in her stories and I adore the Scottish setting. I loved Malcolm in the first book and was so looking forward to reading his story. Viola was a very likable heroine and easy to relate to. These two have some really swoony moments together, their romance was a beautiful thing to watch grow. I enjoyed the overall story, the side characters were well developed and I basically read it in one sitting because I just couldn't put it down.

What a metaphor dream. To be adjacent, but only just is to see this book and not read it – this is me telling you that I loved it. Little bits of poetry, metaphors galore (including but not limiting to stone-throwing), coos, tree swings, gloves, shyness, poet muse Malcolm, and secret author identities were among the many things I loved about this one. Adjacent But Only Just has most of our favorite characters from Love Practically, but a few new ones as well, including the Duke of Kendall. I’m looking forward to continuing this series with Ethan and Allegra, the Duke’s twin sister in One Kiss Alone and the Duke of Kendall’s in A Heart Sufficient. The ending in this one was absolute perfection, Viola and Malcolm are my new favorite couple, and I JUST loved it.

This may be my favorite book by this author and she has become my favorite Regency author. Her characters feel so real and relatable. You get the beautiful writing that you look for in historical fiction yet sharp dialogue and a plot that sucks you in. A relatable heroine and wonderfully masculine heroe with some of his own battles to conquer. All the things.

I loved this story! Viola is an authoress in Regency England who is kind of smitten with the poet Ethan Penn-Leith's writing. So she conjures up an excuse to travel up to Scotland with her father to meet the celebrated poet, and the literary circles' tongues are wagging at the romantic plot about to entangle for all their entertainment in the papers. But when she meets Ethan's older brother first, Malcom, a gentleman farmer, her heart makes up its mind that he is the one who who owns it.

But Malcom would never make Viola lower herself to his station and lose out on all the good she could do with her pen in her own world. He knows she is right for Ethan. They match. Him and her don't. This has so many swoony (but clean) scenes and a good villain and surprises to keep you guessing what will happen the whole way through. I cannot say enough good about this one!

I was so disappointed that this was “insta love!” Nichole Van is so good at developing deep characters and weaving their experiences together to form their relationship and I missed that with Marcus and Viola. The idea that he immediately thought Viola was amazing and wonderful and was so drawn to her when he didn’t know her at all annoyed me. He lost his wife who he’s been grieving for years but Viola shows up and suddenly everything changes and he’s ready to move on… before even really talking to her or getting to know her? I just couldn’t connect with their relationship. I prefer a slower emotional connection especially in the wake of loss.

I began with the first book in this series, which was well-written but which relied on silence between the two main characters to drive the plot, a personal pet peeve of mine. When the female main character of this book was revealed to be a shy, anxious, tongue-tied asthmatic on page 1, I assumed I would be making a long slog through similarly aggravating territory. I was determined to get through it because of my fondness for Malcolm, a lovely young man introduced in the first book, though, so I shored up my patience and forged ahead.

I assumed incorrectly. Yes, the hero and the heroine have lots of internal dialogue, which feels authentic, but they also interact verbally and physically, which also feels authentic. This story is told slowly and carefully, with fully developed and insidiously appealing characters, attention to detail, and beautiful word play. Malcolm and Viola earn their HEA and I was very, very happy to be along for the ride.

Review :

Nichole Van delivers a 5-star read full of emotion, chemistry, and heart that I highly recommend.

I was in a slump after reading this. Everything from the plot, to the romance, to the characters, to the humor sprinkled throughout, to the lyrical narrative, to the masterful discussions and depictions of grief and loss, to the VILLAIN, I loved.

This story is so much more than a romance (although it also doubles as a certified kissing book) taking on difficult topics such as death and injustice and balancing that with a lush, historically accurate backdrop. There are so many quotable passages, one cannot choose a favorite. While the writing is top-notch and gripping, the characters and relationships described in the novel are what kept the pages turning for me.

Malcolm was an ideal hero. Quiet, steadfast, and grief-stricken by his lot in life, Malcolm had a humble view of himself but was fiercely loyal to those he loved. Viola was an inspiring author struggling to find her voice, ( literal and literary ) shy but powerful, she is one of my favorite female characters Van has written to date. Both felt an instant connection to the other and were quick to form a friendship that held deep meaning. I also enjoyed the ‘off-limits’ aspect of the romance as Viola was intended for Malcolm's younger brother Ethan, aka the Highland Poet. While this and other factors kept the two from fully embracing their feelings at first, when they finally took the leap-somehow the chemistry grew even more. They were a match in every way.

I also loved the complexity of the relationships between siblings. Malcolm and Ethan had great trust in each other and had a close relationship. Malcolm supported his brother faithfully, never once complaining. Their trust was ultimately tested, but the execution was brilliant, (and also surprisingly humorous). I also liked the other sibling dynamic described, but it might be considered spoilers, so you’ll have to read and agree with me. Needless to say, I would love to see more of it in future works.

Also, you get to see Rafe, Sofi, Andrew, and Jane from the Brotherhood of the Black Tartan series adding a fun touch for long-time fans.

I will only conclude with that fact that I hope you will give this read a space in your TBR and cannot wait for the next installment.

Do you have an author that no matter what is going on in your life you drop everything when they have a new book? I've had to be super picky about what I can say yes to right now. I only read 4 books last month, a record low! But this book right here, it didn't matter what was going on in my life, the minute I had my ARC I delved in. I was still in France at the time, but my sleep sacrifice was 100% worth it! Getting my review up in a proper amount of time is another story! 😂

I was wondering if this book could ever be as good as Love Practically, but OMG it's just as AMAZING!

My heart just broke for Malcolm at the end of the last book and seeing him overcome his grief and find happiness again was incredible. His journey through his grief was real and raw and I just...have no words for the way it touched me. I heart him forever and ever and think he may be my favorite male character. I was forever changed by his story.

Viola was perfect for him in every way. She journeyed to Scotland to meet his famous poet brother Ethan thinking to make a match, but what she didn't expect was the immediate soul-deep connection and friendship she had with Malcolm. As a farmer he never felt worthy of her, but his artistic mind and deep thoughts matched hers. Their attraction was immediate, and something he never thought he would feel again... and oh that first kiss!!! 🔥🔥🔥 One of my favorite book kisses EVER... and I do not say that lightly. It was achingly perfect in every way. "Someone told me recently that I'm fierce.... I may be small, but I am made of steel, strong enough for the likes of you, Malcolm Penn-Leith" (CHILLS)

The way he believed in her, supported her, uplifted her. She was shy but he saw her in ways no one had. "Viola is fire and passion.... heather and gorse... elemental, she has a vagabond heart and a banshee soul."

I literally could go on and on. This book will stay with me forever and Nichole, you are amazing. I am here for allllll the stories you have told and have yet to tell. Please keep sharing your amazing talent with us.

“Viola was torn between collapsing into hysterics of laughter or climbing Malcolm Penn-Leith’s muscled body like a tree and forcing his gorgeous mouth to hers.”

YES! This is my kind of female main character!

Fun fact about me... I don’t read Nichole Van’s books. I inhale them. I’m so tired from staying up late for two days, to read this book and the previous one. I haven’t done that in a LONG time. Not since the House of Oak and Maledetti Brothers series. IYKYK. I needed to be romanced, and she gave it to me! As an avid Nichole Van fan, I had high expectations. She did NOT disappoint.

I was pleasantly surprised to realize that this is an expansion and vast improvement on a short novella Nichole wrote in 2020 called A Ring of Gold. because I had read that novella, I knew roughly what was going to happen for about 30% of the book. I was slightly bored for those parts that were similar, but it did not take away from my overall experience and I loved the way the characters were developed here, their expanded past and the way Nichole changed things and put it all together. This is 100% better.

THIS BOOK IS:
-Thoughtful
-Moving
-Sweepingly romantic
-Relatable

-And has probably one of the BEST declarations of love in a book I’ve ever read. Malcom MADE this book for me. I liked Viola but Malcom has my heart.

Thank you, Nichole Van, for keeping up your delicious writing. Now If you’ll excuse me, I need some sleep. Lol.

Malcolm has been widowered for five years with little to no reason to pull himself out of mourning. He's not interested in pursuing another relationship and living remotely gives him no reason to change his mind. Meeting Viola broken down on the side of the road shakes up his narrow worldview. Malcolm is relieved to find his unexpected and unwanted interest in her can be pushed aside for the expected union between Viola and his brother, Ethan.
The title for this is impeccable and I love so much that Nichole circled back to it a few times throughout. Just reading the title puts me right back into the story and gives me such a big love for Malcolm and Viola. It doesn't matter how many times I had to set this book down to do life because as soon as I picked it back up, Nichole's imagery and lovely turn of phrase sucked me right back into the story. I'm grateful Nichole is such a beautiful writer but also get to feeling impatient for the next book to release. I'm already tapping my toes waiting for book three.
Thank you to the author for the advanced copy. All thoughts in this review are my own.

Oh, my heart is embedded in this series! This story actually began as a novella (A Ring of Gold in the A Note of Change anthology) and I couldn't have been happier to see a full-length swoony novel develop from it. I loved the premise of a relationship beginning on the common grounds of writing.

Ethan and Viola are destined to be together because of their occupations, but a trip to Scotland to confirm it's a compatible match proves to show things differently. A tragic hero and a seemingly innocent heroine were the stars of the show. The strong, brawny Malcolm in his great kilt with his formidable presence swept Viola and me right off our feet.

I love solid characters and although these were placed in a pleasant location, there were conditions and circumstances that resulted in many secrets. I love Van's writing style and the beautiful love story that emerged, despite many obstacles, was wonderful. I am already longing for the next book in this lovely series.

Content: very mild language; mild romance
