This special edition of the New York Times bestselling cookbook contains a full-color “Pink” section, full of stories, tips, photographs, and recipes from breast cancer survivors, access-to-care providers, and participants in Avon Foundation’s 9 city walks. This special section precedes the complete revised and updated Fix-It and Forget-It Cookbook which includes more than 700 fantastic slow-cooker recipes. At least one dollar from every “Pink” cookbook sold goes to the Avon Foundation for Women’s Breast Cancer Crusade.
This book has really helped me start to love my slow cooker that I previously had little experience with. There are tons of recipes to try for all kinds of meals, and if you are going to a cookout, this is THE recipe book for baked beans in a slow cooker. I couldn't believe how many there were. I cooked mostly from the breakfast and chicken chapters and have yet to hit upon ones that I really liked and will make again, but the recipes are simple enough to encourage me to keep trying. The main problem I keep running into is the cooking times. The ranges listed in the book end up being either too short or too long, but I guess every slow cooker is different. I feel like I would know better if I had more experience with my sow cooker. Also, the directions can be deceptively simple. Sometimes, steps that need to be written out are not and multiple steps are put into one step to make the recipe appear easier or faster than it is. The recipes in here are written and submitted by breast cancer survivors, so they are more on the amateur side, and I think I would do better with them if I was more experienced in using my slow cooker. I will keep trying recipes from this and other books until I figure it out!
This is a massive special edition version of a New York Times bestselling cookbook, crammed full of over 700 slow cooker recipes, and a proportion of the sales price is being donated to the Avon Foundation's Breast Cancer Crusade fund.
As well as the various recipes there is also a "Pink" section that has stories, tips, features and references to breast cancer, its treatment and so forth. This review shall naturally focus on the recipes, but the section on breast cancer is similarly comprehensive as the cookery-side of the book.
This ebook is colour photograph central. Masses and masses of photographs are to be found and the food looks mouth-watering and interesting from the get go when they appear, yet bizarrely after a great start with various photographs they just peter out when it comes to the main section. A bit of an anti-climax. A few line drawing icons or miniature food logos seem to be randomly thrown about the book for some unknown reason. Leave the space empty if you are not going to put a photograph in. Cutey "clip art" just makes the book look cheap and rather poorly put-together.
The book has great content but at times a rather bizarre general styling. An identity crisis if you will. When you look at the actual recipes they do have all the essential bits (even the fabled prep and cook time, that we are often forced to complain about being lacking elsewhere). The recipes are well laid out, easy-to-understand and hassle-free.
The only thing really being questioned here is the relevance of the recipes from various survivors that complement the main recipe section. With a cold heart one just wonders why the average reader will specifically benefit from reading someone else's special recipes. Sure, a recipe might jump out and metaphorically grab you, but it is hardly the same as reading a recipe book in the usual way. It just isn't clear, but it is not offensive and easily skipped-over should that be desirable.
Things are rounded off by a great index and, being an ebook, these are hyperlinked so you can jump back to the recipes. For an ebook this is priced probably at a too-high price point. Since only a dollar per book is being donated to a good cause it cannot be just due to this. At this price point some of the irritations might be an irritation too far and you can't go and browse this book at a bookstore first either. So we can really only give a qualified recommendation. You will either love or hate this book. There probably is no middle ground. Do you fancy a gamble..?

The Fix-It and Forget-It Cookbook is my Crockpot bible. When I saw the Pink edition I couldn't resist. Seriously, who could resist the proven name of Fix-It and Forget-It in conjunction with the awesome cause of Breast Cancer prevention, treatment and research.
I live for the time of year when the weather cools, the kids are back to school and time is a rare commodity. Why, do you ask? Have I lost my mind? Yes, probably (well, definitely). But, for this purpose you'll have to agree. It's the perfect time of year to throw some ingredients in the crockpot in the morning and come home to a great homecooked meal. In most cases the prep time is next to nothing, but the result is amazing!
With an index in the front it is so easy to find the recipe your looking for in this well put together cookbook. Plus, everything is organized in categories. This is exceptionally helpful if you have pork chops just aching to be cooked and no idea what to do with them.
Bottom line: This is a great cookbook for a great cause. If you love crockpot cooking BUY IT! You won't be sorry.
I wish I could give this collection of recipes negative stars. The breast cancer awareness portion is simply an intro portion added to pre-existing content. Then, onto the recipes. This is merely a collection of recipes. There's no indication that these have been tested or vetted and none have intros. There's nothing unique about the recipes. They're largely classic slow cooker fare with little commitment to health or originality of ingredients. Lots of roasted meat and stews, plus some Velveeta.
