Swissted: Vintage Rock Posters Remixed and Reimagined

Rate this book
“Fine art for font nerds.”— New York  Magazine

“One of the most engaging homages I have ever seen.”—Steven Heller

Swissted takes rock concert posters of the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s and remixes and reimagines them through a Swiss modernist lens. The result is some of the coolest images you’ve ever seen! The book features 200 posters, all microperforated and ready to frame. Or keep them bound in one collection as an art book. The foreword is written by legendary designer Steven Heller.

Posters are from legendary indie, alternative, and punk bands such as Jane’s Addiction, Blondie, the Beastie Boys, the Clash, the Pixies, Green Day, the Ramones, Devo, the Sex Pistols, Dead Kennedys, Public Image Ltd., Sonic Youth, the Cure, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Hüsker Dü, Danzig, the Replacements, Fugazi, the Lemonheads, Pearl Jam, Pavement, Superchunk, They Might Be Giants, Guided by Voices, Sugar, Sleater Kinney, Violent Femmes, Iggy Pop, Fishbone, Nirvana, and many, many more!

I won this book through the publisher (on Twitter, not through Goodreads), and it was even more than I expected. I was expecting to receive a book about the size of a school binder, but I was wrong - this book is huge!

The photos are amazing, and it doesn’t even matter that I don't know all of the bands, because the artwork is incredible. I appreciate that each page can be easily removed to have it framed, though I can't imagine deconstructing the book (If I have parties, I'll have to hide the book so that no one takes off with a page or two). I also especially like that prices are mentioned in a lot of the posters. And, for my generation, many of the “special guests” or opening acts are more popular today than the original feature act.

This book is going to great with my vinyl collection.

I have a confession to make: I'd be perfectly happy listening to only Beatles music 24/7. However, Swissted by Mike Joyce interests me in all sorts of other bands because it's a lovely, giant book loaded reimagined posters from real concerts. The images are graphic, striking and even perforated so you can take them out of the book and hang them on your wall.

You will want to. I want to, though I shudder at the thought of how much all those frames are going to cost me.

I think the posters are actually perfect for wrapping small gifts, they'd look amazing though I'm not sure I could actually part with any of the pages.

Note: I received a review copy from Quirk Books for an honest review.

Went to a many of those Hard Core shows and want to have seen all of them! The flyers promoting these shows were always so personal, like a crazy dada collage that we used to create ourselves and post everywhere.

To reinterpret that with the with the clean and beautiful lines iconic to the Swiss graphic arts - the DIY maximum into a polished minimal - is brilliant. You know how hard it is to create something both beautiful and freakin' hilarious?

A wonderful homage to both subcultures. And yes, the perforated pages makes a wonderful touch - pull them out and post them up like the flyers they once were on a telephone pole near you! I think I should buy a second copy just to do that.

5 stars for tremendous design, the surprising amount of depth and writing that has gone into the publication (the posters themselves were originally located at swissted.com), and the fact that every sheet of paper turned out to be a poster-ready pull-tab.

The Swiss Style deserves to come back and be showcased at every opportunity, and so does the DIY and sure-moraled compass of the 1970s-1980s punk bands featured. It's even better than peanut butter and chocolate.

This large collection of punk rock posters I found interesting, not because I'm familiar with the bands, but I think the designs have a simplistic beauty to them. I'm more of an outsider looking in. I recognized the names of many of the bands, but am not familiar with much of the music. However this is an important part of recent music and art history.
