For Xavian Ramir, killing is the only life he has ever known. Torn from his family when he was a child, he was trained from an early age to be an elite assassin. But now he longs for something more, vowing to start anew after one last job. The bounty on his target’s head is enough to set him up for good—if he can resist the long-dead conscience that stirs to life when he meets his beautiful mark.

Afina Lazar never wanted to become high priestess, but the brutal murders of her beloved mother and sister leave her no choice. Now she is running for her life, desperate to protect the magical amulet entrusted to her care. But when Barbu’s assassin comes for her, she realizes her only chance of stopping the warlord’s rise to power is to convince this enigmatic—and handsome—hunter that she is more valuable alive than dead.

Knight Awakened is a phenomenal start to Circle of Seven series. A world with prophecies, witchery and dragons, Ms. Callahan delivered a brilliant story. What I have learned about this author after reading Dragon Fury is that she is great at world building. I have also come to expect lots of action, suspense and romance complete with steamy scenes. Knight Awakened has all that and then some. Ms Callahan surely did NOT disappoint!

“And out of the ashes seven warriors shall rise. Bringers of death, they shall wreak vengeance upon the earth, until shadow is driven into darkness and only the light remains.” ~The chronicles of Al Pacii/Knight Awakened

A completely different world from her Dragon Fury series, this book is set in the 1300′s AD. Life all around is not easy. Torture, slavery aNd death are everywhere but most of all, power and control is always at play. Xavian Ramir, an assassin hired to capture Afina Lazar’s, the Priestess of Orm for that very purpose. She alone has the power over who rules Transylvania. The question is what will Ram do with her.

Xavian and Afina are complete with strength, weaknesses and with a complicated past. In my opinion, it makes their actions more realistic and understandable. I thought they were good together. I love that their romance was not rushed. They did not have an insta-love but their attraction was definitely palpable. They had some sexy scenes together, you will not be disappointed in that department.

The secondary characters were also intriguing. The two villains, Hallal and Vlad played their role well. They are who you would love to hate. Power hungry and pure evil. Henrick, is one I’m sure to have a book of his own. Skilled, deadly but has a good heart. I’m betting he will be an alpha to his mate.

Take note that this is neither a pocket book size story nor a typical Historical Romance. The novel is longer than full-length and it has an EPIC feel to it. Mark my words, this series will make it’s mark in the Historical and PNR genre. This is definitely one of the my best reads for 2012!

The official video of Knight Awakened is up on Youtube and the characters were as I imagine them to be. I thought it would be cool to get a good visual of the two sexy leads.

The writing is all over the place. I am bored, skimming, and in a serious wtf momment.

The character's train of thought is a disorganized mess. The dialogue is inconsistant bouncing back and forth from modern slang to Scottish to proper historical (for lack of a better description)

The time period is supposed to be in the 1300's yet there are numerous modern day references.

The child, who is 2, doesn't need diaper changes and can speak like a 5 years old.

The villian is cartoonishly evil and stereotyped.

Not gonna waste anymore time. Thank God it was free.

This might be my favorite series from this author IF the rest of the books are going to be like this first one. The storyline was pretty exciting and had me hating when I had to take a break for whatever thing in life demanded my attention at that time. That alone is what I always look for in a book. I want the story to grab me and not let go.

The other big thing that made me love this was the hero. He has this dark intensity about him that I just loooove in my heroes. He's also very deadly, and yes that is just as appealing to me. The only thing I wish there was less of about him was that he did feel like he wasn't good enough for the heroine. That always leads to resistance and I just prefer little resistance. The fact that they were so drawn to each other kept that resistance from bothering me.

I also really liked the heroine. That's not always a requirement for me but it is definitely a bonus when that happens. She's very powerful on her own but she was just learning those powers. She's very compassionate and was a natural mother to those who needed that from her.

Overall, great start to the series. I'm looking forward to the next book.

I enjoyed this this book very much... If I had one bad thing to say about it it would be that it started off kind of slow. Other then that I'm quite pleased.

I found myself yelling loudly in root for our hero Xavian... I loved this character because yes he had that alpha quality but not only that, he was courageous, selfless, kind, generous, and clever but he still was a badass who kick ass and asked questions later...

Our heroine Afina, was sweet and loving and a nurturer. She finds her self harbingers special gifts and magic that benefits her and Xavian...

Please with this story and this author writing and skill of creatively to pull a story together like this will get high praise from all the time. Well done Coreene Callahan.

The promise was there and there were some spectacular moments but this book never came together the way a book should. It read like a series of blackout sketches that left me feeling punked. Add in the nonsensical "history" and the author's penchant for referring to her characters by different names as well as hour after hour of boring detail that should have been cut and I'm not a happy listener.

I can't figure out why she bothered to provide a 14th century date since this is straight up fantasy complete with magic and dragons. There wasn't even a nod to historical accuracy -- every character speaks in 21st century slang.

While I liked narrator Susan Crowley there were annoyances made worse by hearing them read aloud. For example "the nape of her neck" seemingly appears thousands of times and hearing it over and over again stepped on my last nerve. BTW, we have only one nape and it's "of" our neck. Saying "nape of her neck" is like saying "nose of her face" or "fingers of her hand." And while I'm nitpicking, every time I heard the heroine's name Afina it sounded like a mispronunciation of Athena. Was the hero's name Xavian or Ram? And I have to mention one of my romance novel top ten peeves: the sheltered virgin who instinctively knows how to give a world class blow job. Please.

It was too bloated and discombobulated. It read like a first draft of what could have been a very good book. Great cover image.

Audiobook: Narrator - Suzan Crowley
I really struggled with this narration. I can usually adjust to an accent after a bit of time but not so in this case. I think Ms. Crowley's tone was too low and completely opposite what I’m used to listening to. I tried repeatedly to make this work, even adjusting the speed, but I finally gave up and turned to the ebook instead.

This was recommended to me by my book buddy because she loved the intensity of the hero. And oh my, yes! Xavian is hotly intense in every way. When it comes to protecting Afina, he’s front and center. He also believes that he is not worth her so he fights to protect her from himself. It all makes for some angsty moments.

Afina is quite a unique heroine. I was excited to see what was going to unfold for her as she is responsible for her young niece while hiding from what her mother has set into motion. Within the first few pages of meeting her I was intrigued and couldn’t wait to learn more.

This started with a lot of promise but unfortunately it didn’t live up to my expectations. It felt as though the author was constantly cutting things short rather than giving us the full picture while other times giving too much in areas where it wasn’t needed. It just never felt rounded out. The language didn’t fit the time period and the little girl did not speak as a two year old but that of a much older child. This held so much promise. I was hungry for an epic story filled with romance and adventure and while it gave me some of that, it just never reached the top of my expectations.

This is the opening of an exciting and very sexy new series. Afina, Xavian and Henrik are flawed. Their flaws make them likeable. Some of the minor characters have more morality conflicts than it seems will be redeemable in this book. The villains are just pure evil. Halal makes the bad guy in LORD OF THE RINGS look like a Kindergarten teacher, and Vladimir is greed and lust driven without a care for anyone other than himself.

There are lots of surprises. Honestly, halfway through the book I emailed Coreene to ask her if this Circle of Seven series was a prequel to Dragon Fury because the Dragonfury mythology seems similar. She says no, though.

I liked the timing and build-up of the relationship between Afina and Xavian. It's slow, and has more than one setback. But, unlike a great deal of romantic fiction we can see a progression in trust and a build-up in tension that gives the eventual hook-up credibility.

I did feel it took a bit too long to get the relationships between all the characters, and the several plot lines that were playing out. Not everything is spelled out ad we are left with the leeway to put things together ourselves.

While the Dragonfury series is comprised of shorter books with a couple of central story lines for each book and then some longer term arcs, this story has more of an epic, high fantasy feel without the otherworldly aspect.

I love Coreene's style, and really enjoyed KNIGHT AWAKENED so I'm enthusiastic about the new series and highly recommend it to you!

I have no remembrance of getting this book. I don’t know if it was a freebie – if it was, alas it isn’t now, I don’t know if I read a good review, I don’t think I bought it by the cover – something I’ve done before. I don’t think it was the book blurb as it doesn’t sound like something that would influence me. All I do know is I ordered it Oct 19/14. And what it was that even prompted me to start this book I don’t know. I have A LOT of books now between the three different ‘readers’, Kindle, Kobo and IBooks. But I did figure I would give this one a try on the weekend and WOWZERS, WOWZERS, WOWZERS. THIS BOOK IS DA’ BOMB!!
Oh my goodness, oh my goodness, oh my goodness. It is EVERYTHING I love in a book.

Gritty: check

Tortured hero: check

Brave, kick ass – but not too much – heroine: check

Interesting story line: check

Lots of action and adventure: check

Great setting: check

Great supporting cast: check

Yep, this book has it all. Afina Lazar is a young woman in hiding in Transylvania in the year 1331. She has sole responsibility of her niece. She is being hunted by the wanna-be ruler who also killed her mother and sister. The current hunter is a man named Xavian Ramir. He was stolen when he was just a child and raised to be an assassin, a killing machine. His training was vicious. He has escaped the people who taught him and is trying to find redemption by rescuing young boys who have been stolen for the same thing as he was. He plans on collecting the money for finding Afina and retreat to a fortress with his young charges and a few other assassins who followed him.

But he changes his plans when he does track down Afina. Right from the start there is a very strong connection between the two of them though he refuses to act on it. He has a lot of self-loathing for the life he has lived and doesn’t think he is nearly good enough for her. He steals her away, in part to protect her against other assassins that may be sent after her and in part, to become a part of his people. She is a healer and they need a healer.

But Afina is more than he realizes and more than even she herself knows. She is a high priestess with newly discovered powers that she is struggling to learn. As Xavian and Afina make their way to his holding, they have all kinds of adventures She is wanted by the evil wanna be king and Xavian is being hunted by the people who turned him into an assassin, they need to kill him as an example against others trying to escape this life.
This is a fascinating, wonderful story that kept me buried in the story, very reluctant to look up at all. It was a perfect blend of medieval, fantasy and paranormal. There was good and evil and some we weren’t sure about. There was a damsel in distress, a wonderful noble and handsome hero who the reader can REALLY appreciate, fire breathing dragons. What there wasn’t which kind of tickled my funny bone were any vampires even though Transylvania is the setting.

I am thrilled beyond belief to have found this author and already purchased the next book in this series. She has another series that I plan to get and read too I’m that impressed.
GoodReads gives me the option of sending out recommendations on books with a 4 or 5 to all my friends. I’m going to send out a lot of those for this well-earned, well deserved 5 star book. I’m holding off reading the next one, enjoying the anticipation and then of course I will have to read Dragon Awakened again as a refresher

“And out of the ashes seven warriors shall rise. Bringers of death, they shall wreak vengeance upon the earth, until shadow is driven into darkness and only the light remains.”

And so it begins, the seven are together and they will bring death and wreak vengeance upon the earth!

Afina is a wonderful heroine. She is sensitive without being weak, she’s strong without being hard-hearted, she’s loving and kind and most importantly forgiving and understanding. I REALLY liked her and found myself cheering her on as she found her way in life. She struggled with her magic as her power came to her but she never feared her power. She accepted it and moved on. She often felt like she had brought hardship to others or put them in danger, but that is the way a sensitive person would feel. But she managed to do this without being whiny or playing the woe is me card.

Xavian is tough as nails and slowly learns to let go and let Afina into his life. She snuck in under his defenses when he wasn’t looking. But once she was there, he kept her close to his heart.

This was an amazing story with so many twists and turns in it. I never felt like it was taking the predictable path. I was never sure what was going to happen next and I loved it! We have a high priestess with magical powers, deadly assassins, shape-shifting dragons, deceit from some and unwavering loyalty from others. We have secrets revealed and others yet to be discovered.

The only drawback I found with this book was the sheer amount of information I received. Since this is the first in a series there was a lot of background information for us to get in this story. There were also a lot of new characters that we had to meet. It took me some time to get everyone straight in my mind. Once that happened I was flying through the book. The following books will be easier since I already have most of the background information and know who the main players in the series are.

I am eagerly awaiting the second book in this series and I’m wondering whose story we get next. I want to know what each of their mates brings to the battle. We already know what the seven warriors bring, now we need to find out what their mates bring!

Coreene Callahan has a way with words that draws the reader into the world she has woven and not letting them go until the very end. Knight Awakened in fast paced and full of suspense. Ms. Callahan manages to keep the reader on the edge of their seats.

I have found YET ANOTHER series to follow! I am not sure how I am going to keep up with them all! On top of that, none of my authors can write fast enough to keep me from screaming with impatience! I need the next one NOW!

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Ok read

I listened to the audio book while I walked everyday. The story was interesting with lots of twists. We still didn’t know why her mom never trained her and the real bad guy is still out there. The story did seem scattered at times. Jumping POV a great deal without warning. It maybe set in a historical time but everything is fictional in it, so as long as you keep that in mind and not get technical about it, it is an interesting story. I will listen to the next.

DNF at 86% when I realized I was making myself finish this book. What starts out seeming like a period historical romance in a really cool place/time (Carpathian Mountains!), turned into a really disjointed paranormal fantasy with a poorly constructed world. It was like reading paranormal stunt-casting - in pops some disparate paranormal thingy for a scene or two. I am more than a little surprised this novel received so many 5 star ratings. Even with so much going on, I was bored. And I should have counted how many times Xavian had a "traitor" somewhere in his pants or behind his laces or in his trewes.

I listened to the audio for about 20% of the book and then read until I just couldn't anymore.

Yep this was awesome! Drama, suspense, sword fighting, magic, love and the promise of Sooo Much more. Can't wait to read book #2 Great Writing , like SERIOUSLY amazing job!

Also, I know I'm being Bitchy for this..... but can people get a life the story is set in Transylvania..... Did you seriously think for 1 second there would be no possibility of a supernatural occurrence? Who the hell cares if an the Author chooses the use historical references as well as anomalous things that have no basis in reality And exist only in one's imagination. Isn't that the beauty of literature the use of one's imagination and writing abilities.

And NO this author did a really good job keeping the dialogue consistent with people not of the present Generation. I not only READ every word of this book I also listened to the Audio Book, I think the Author was perfectly descriptive without going over the top with boring detail. It painted a nice picture and I liked it a lot Obviously.

My thoughts:

Giving this 4.5 stars and rounding up.

I really enjoyed this and got sucked into it pretty quickly. I enjoyed Xavian and Afina quite a bit. They frustrated me at times, but that's pretty much to be expected in a PNR and it's better than them never doing anything wrong. Besides, I really liked Afina, so I was quite happy that she didn't do typical dumb heroine things. Xavian had some typical alpha male hero tendencies, but I still really liked him.

The story starts out with Xavian right outside where Afina has been hiding out with her sister's two-year old daughter Sabine. Xavian has been sent to retrieve Afina for the man who wants her. Xavian doesn't know why Vladimir Barbu wants Afina and he shouldn't care, but he gets curious. It also turns out that another man has sent Xavian after Afina (though this turns out not to be what he expected) and Xavian isn't too sure about what he's going to do exactly until he does it. The next thing you know, he's stealing Afina and Sabine away to take them to his keep Drachaven. In the beginning, Afina is both drawn to Xavian and terrified of him. She doesn't know why she wants him and berates herself for it on more than one occasion. What she is sure of, is that she has to take Sabine and get as far away as possible. She's being hunted and for all she knows, Xavian is taking her to the man that is hunting her. The one time she does try to escape, she gets herself into some serious trouble. Lucky for her, Xavian knew she would try and was following her when it happened. That's when we really start to learn what it is about Afina that makes Vladimir want her so badly.

For Xavian's part, he could be hot and cold. He really, really wanted Afina, but felt he had no right to her. So when man is he pissed. To him, she's been lying the whole time and Xavian cannot abide by lies. He isn't nice to her after that. He was doing it on purpose because he was pissed that what he felt was a lie caused him to break his oath, but he was pissed at himself, too. Luckily, Afina gets herself into trouble after that and he rescues her and that doesn't last too long. He does try avoiding her later on in the book even after learning about the connection they have because he seriously thinks that someone like him doesn't deserve someone like her. Afina sets him straight on that front, though. I was proud of her for that. She wouldn't let him hide from her.

There were a couple of unexpected discoveries. I was especially surprised by Henrik's connection to everything. I wasn't actually expecting the Goddess they talked about to interact with them, either. So now we have a band of former assassins fighting the good fight. Somehow, all of the women they'll end up will be helpful to that in some way, I'm sure. I'm looking forward to getting to know more of the Seven better. So far, I've got a little bit of a handle on Cristobal, Henrik, Andrei and Shay, but I totally forgot about Kazim and Razvan unless they were mentioned during a fight. We never really saw Xavian interact with those two. I am really curious to know if the dragon shifters will get their own books. I'd love to see Garren especially fall in love.

I'm sure we'll be seeing more of that bastard Halal. I don't like his POVs because I just don't like him, but they at least add to the story. He'll probably be around for the whole conflict as other than the Goddess's nemesis, he's the Big Bad. I hope that Xavian and his crew can keep too many more boys from falling into that asshole's hands, but I'm sure there will be setbacks along the way.

I'll be following along to see what happens. I just hope there won't be too long of a wait between the rest of the books like there was between this one and book 2. Nearly two years!

I don't know. It started out pretty good, but then it just got too ...something. Too long, Too weird. The MCs were okay, I missed Sabine when she was taken out of the scenes. I like Henrik a lot, I found him to be the most interesting, but I also felt like there was stuff in there that was unnecessary and it became too long and the longer it was, the less I was invested.

Coreene Callahan does it again! With the onset of her second series, Coreene shows us that her Dragon Fury Series is not a one shot wonder.. The Circle of Seven Series is darker, edgier, grittier.. pretty difficult when her Dragon Fury Series is a cross between Urban Fantasy and PNR..

Knight Awakened takes place in 14th century Transylvania.. and no there aren't any vampires.. well not yet who knows what the ever creative Ms Callahan has up her sleeve for future books. What this book does have is mystic, mythos and majesty.

Kidnapped from his family at a young age, Xavian Ramir was raised to be an assassin. And type A personality that he is, he became the best there was. Until one day he had enough and walked away.. only to be followed by those who believed in him. Together they formed a circle dedicated to destroying the men who had made them monsters. Devoted to saving as many boys as possible. Taking jobs that used his skill set to fund their lives. Until one day, he is asked by Vladimir Barbu, the wanna be King, to bring back one girl..

Afina Lazar, felt like she had been running forever. Barely escaping with her niece, she has lived on wit alone for at least two years.. Knowing that Vlad has plans for her. Only she doesn't quite understand why, she is a flawed healer.. Her heritage marks her as the next priestess to the goddess but there is nothing there.. no power, no hope. All she has left is the amulet that shows her heritage.

Xavian and Afina combust!! These two strike sparks off each other from first meeting and both know there is something there. Even when Xavian kidnaps Afina she is drawn to him, knowing he will never hurt her. And Xavian, vows to protect her at all costs, even from himself. Both of these strong characters are nurturers and yet neither sees their own worth. Integrity, loyalty, determination to give others a better life.. yeah heroes.. both of them!

Entering this world set in what is still the most mysterious place on earth, The Carpathian Mountains, we discover untold wonders. Great Evil that can only be combated by Great Courage. From it's secret recesses legends rise from the mist. And Ms Callahan tells a wonderful story wrapped in the reality of such a world. Her characters are mere mortals that walk amongst gods and find that inner something that only few have.

As this is the first book, there is some world building and some characters that I can not wait to learn more of.. And since this is Coreene, yes there are dragons.. These dragons could be the ancestors of her Dragonfury series but she says not.. *sigh* I know I have that need to tie things up all pretty.. but this book doesn't need Ms Callahan's previous works.. nope it stands on it's own!

Get in on the beginning with this one, you won't be disappointed. Well, except that you have to wait, like the rest of us, for the next book.. I wonder if I can bribe Coreene to just send me all her books as soon as she finishes them (hey don't laugh, I keep trying.. she keeps making excuses, you know like she has to make a living or some such nonsense)

I LOVED LOVED LOVED this book.. full out 5plus stars!!

Very fast paced fun read. Magic, mystical beings, and warrior assassins fill this world with exciting entertainment. To be honest, from the write up on the back I wasn't really sure what to expect from this one. If I'm being totally honest, I wasn't sure I'd like it but I'm so glad I gave it a chance. It was definitely entertaining.

I think there will be at least 7 books in this series which I'm thankful for because I have some questions. The book was complete and had a great conclusion I just have some questions on the other characters that I'd like to read more about. Mainly, Shay. He just sort of popped up in the end and I wanted to see how that would play out. I guess that's what a new book is for.

I enjoyed the characters immensely. The previous books I've been reading lately have had me irritated or annoyed with one character or another and I just couldn't connect. I had no issues with this one. I connected and I could understand what they were going through. I could even feel myself in Afina's place regarding Xavian. I almost feel like I've been in situations like that. (Small, hopefully, not *****spoiler*****Well, minus the magic and danger and more on the scary commitment thing.)

This is at the top of my book list for books that I enjoyed recently. I want more. I love the world, the characters, and everything in between. There's even some really good action scenes. I can't wait for more in this series.

Just no. Nothing about this was anything I liked.

The setting was a real time and place (1400s Transylvannia) but it was a hot mess of anachronisms. Most of the characters talked like they were from Scotland 2003.

The "history" provided... what? And then there's a layer of fantasy over the whole thing (dragons! magic!). I'd have been bothered less by it all if she'd just made up a place entirely. I'd still have hated the word overuseage (trews! lass! twas! mayhap!) and the anachronistic language, but at least I wouldn't have been as annoyed by the setting.

I didn't like the hero or the heroine or any of the supporting characters. Most of them I thought were so interchangeable I couldn't keep them apart.

The plot jumped around at lightening speed, focusing on different characters and problems that I frankly didn't care about because I wasn't invested in any of them.

There was not enough information given about the backstory and why everything and everyone were in the positions they were.

I'm also not keen on this whole "she has sex with one dude and is now mystically bound to him 5-EVAH thing that was going on here.

Just really, really not for me.

KNIGHT AWAKENED is truly like stepping into a different world. With vivid descriptions and dramatic plot twists, it is sure to get a rise out of its readers. While very detailed in its backstory and introduction of new characters, the slower pacing definitely allowed the time to really understand the world that Callahan has created.

The romance between Afina and Ramir progressed at a steady pace, first involving feelings of distrust and fear then moving on to feelings of loyalty and love. Though it is the worldbuilding and Callahan's vivid imagination that has me seeing stars -- she really packs a punch in KNIGHT AWAKENED. If the first book is any indication of the rest of the series, then the Circle of Seven, will be a series to watch out for!

TW: murder, death of family members (before events of book), torture, mention of rape, sexual assault, human trafficking/slavery, mention of sexual abuse, mention of past child abuse (both by a parent and adult), animal death

I think I saw this recommended by Katee Robert who's books I love. Won't lie, it was the promise of smut that had me picking this up more than anything and I kept reading mostly because of that and it gave me something to do.

The plot was okay. Magic not really that explained or fleshed out but what are you gonna do. The whole "tearing her barrier" thing will never not annoy me. Virginity is a construct. The hymen doesn't tear when there is penetration, whether that's from a penis, a finger, a sex toy, or whatever. This whole being a virgin is considered pure schtick can also sod off. Don't need it, don't want it, don't care for it.

Even though this had it's problems, I'm interested enough in Henrick's book to read it. That and it's free to read on kindle unlimited and I want to get my free trial's worth.

I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I started this book and it took me several chapters to really get into the story. There is a lot of descriptive detail that at times bogs down the movement of the characters in the story. But overall I found the premise very interesting and I think I will continue on with the series.

I am a big fan of Coreene’s Dragonfury series, so when Coreene contacted me to see if I was interested in reviewing Knight Awakened I jumped at the chance. I do not read a lot of historical romance, but there is enough paranormal in this book to keep me satisfied. And I actually found myself really loving the language of this time and the historical elements that were woven into the story. Since this is the first book in the series Corenne did have a lot of information to give us to develop this world, but she gave it to us in small doses and avoided the info dump that can often come with a new series. I appreciated getting just bits and pieces of the puzzle as the journey unfolded before us.

In Knight Awakened, we follow Xavian and Afina. Xavian is a trained assassin who has escaped his maker in an attempt to start a new life. He no longer wants to bend to someone else’s will, but desires freedom. Some have followed him and he has become their unintentional leader. While he still has killer instinct he tries to go about every situation fairly and does not punish those who do not deserve it. He is a complete alpha male, but is broken inside and needs someone to help him realize that he too deserves to be happy. Enter Afina, she has also been dealt a bad hand in life and has no family to speak of, except her sister’s daughter who she now cares for. She is on the run from Vladimir Barbu who wishes to use her for political gain. She starts off a little skittish and is unsure of her own strength, but she quickly develops into a head strong woman who is brave, caring and fights for what she knows she deserves. While both characters go through physical obstacles, Knight Awakened is really a novel about self-discovery. Xavian and Afina are just now learning what they are truly made of and how to heal a lifetime of hurt so they can let someone else in.

The romance in this book was a slow build since the two characters do not trust each other right away, but the tension was extraordinary to watch! Xavian and Afina both need someone to help heal their pasts and together they form a fragile bond that is tender and very sweet to watch as it slowly grows stronger. They are both inexperienced when it comes to divulging their feelings and I enjoyed watching them learn how to love together.

The action in this book was non-stop and really exciting. There were multiple people coming after both characters and danger lurked around every corner. We do get to see inside the enemies heads which was very intriguing. They are after Xavian and Afina for different reasons, but they are both evil to their core. They were villains that were easy to hate and I am sure we have not seen the last of at least one of them.

The world itself was so alluring. I soaked in all the vibrant details that Coreene gave us. We travel alongside Afina and Xavian as they journey cross country and I could picture it all as a map unfurling in my head. Since the characters do not remain stagnant and the scenery kept changing, it kept my mind fully engaged in the world and even when there was a lull in the action I was still fully immersed in the world.

Overall, Knight Awakened is a stellar start to a new series. Coreene has blended together a magical world filled with fierce warriors, an intriguing prophecy, malicious villains, mythical creatures and scorching hot romance that will burn up the pages. Even though this book was four hundred and fifty pages, I devoured it in one sitting, it was just that amazing! I loved every second I spent in this world and can only hope Corenne will continue the journey and let the other warriors have their own books as well. I am personally hoping to see more from Henrik.

If you’ve been following my reviews here on Tynga’s Reviews this past year, you might have noticed how much I’ve enjoyed Coreene Callahan’s Dragonfury series so far. It reminds me so much of J.R. Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood series because of the brotherly bond between the warriors and the intense bond they share with their mates. While this newest series of hers has those qualities, it’s a forage into a different genre altogether. Although KNIGHT AWAKENED does have a few dragons, the story concentrates more on the high priestess Afina Lazar and her bodyguard of sorts, Xavian Ramir who has declined the task of bringing Afina to the evil warlord Vladimir Barbu for a bounty.

This book promises non-stop action in a wonderful historical setting of greedy lords, yummy warriors and humble heroines. I really enjoyed the first book in this new series mainly because of the admirable characters and dragons shapeshifting dragons. The main characters, like in all Coreene Callahan books, are unforgettable. Afina has the right amount of strength and tenacity to survive and protect her niece while being hunted by an evil warlord. It’s her dedication to goodness that makes her an admirable and loveable character. The fact that we see her grow as a character in a short amount of time, makes her a more believable character. As for Xavian, he might seem like your typical warrior but his history and dark past add depth to his character. He is undoubtedly haunted by the things he’s done as an assassin and feels unworthy of Afina’s love.

While the story itself can seem like your typical woman-in-distress-meets-strong-warrior, I have no problem with the storyline because for me, that type of hook will never get old. It’s what happens during the rest of the novel that keeps you entertained anyways. Afina is wanted by many parties because of her magical powers and her high priestess title. As she runs away with Xavian from anybody that wants to harm her, an obvious bond starts to form between the two. I’m glad the author didn’t rush the relationship between the two. I’m not going to reveal too much about Afina’s magical powers and her quest because finding out everything is one of the charms of this book.

There’s a huge cast of secondary characters in this book, which made it hard to keep track of them sometimes. That’s probably the only negative thing I have to say about the novel. I understand the author wanted to introduce us to all the members of her prophesized Circle of Seven (the name of the series), but I think it’s the additional characters like the dragons, the bad guys and the various townspeople/household members that made it hard to keep track of everyone. Despite this minor inconvenience, the story is still very clear and enjoyable.

I have a guilty pleasure for historical paranormal romances and KNIGHT AWAKENED was able to satisfy my craving for the genre. There’s something special about this genre that makes me want to read more of it. With some of the secondary characters being shapeshifting dragons, I believe this Circle of Seven series might be a prequel of sorts to the Dragonfury series. If that’s true, I can’t wait to read more of either series so I can learn more about the magical world of Coreene Callahan’s dragon shapeshifters.

A few months ago I was contacted by author Coreene Callahan to review the first book in her Circle of Seven series and as soon as I read the summary that she provided I knew I would be in for a real treat. However, the book got pushed to the side until last week when I finally (sorry Coreene!) got around to it and I am so glad that this was my second read of the year.

This book was everything I hoped it would be and more. Coreene Callahan created a wonderful story that is a fantastic mixture of historical fiction, fantasy and romance. This book is set in Transylvania during the 1300s and that added to the uniqueness of the novel. I have never come across a book like this before but I'm very glad I discovered this one.

The plot was wonderful. There's murder, fighting, secret societies, magic, romance and dragons all between the covers of this book. I loved the sense of adventure that I felt as I was reading Knight Awakened. There were so many plot twists that the author really kept me on my toes when it came to guessing what would happen next.

I loved the romance aspect between Afina and Xavian. Neither character was perfect and I thought it was wonderful how they fought their attraction to each other for awhile before they decided they were tired of the tension. As a couple I think they might just be on their way to becoming one of my favourite couples. They didn't have a case of the dreaded insta-love and I liked the way their relationship evolved as the story went on. Plus the fact that Xavian, who is the epitome of what an alpha male should be bent to Afina's whim was nice to see.

I thought the characters were great. Afina has a lot more to her than it seems especially in the beginning. I wasn't sure what to think of her when the book first started because I was afraid she would be a helpless damsel in distress but I was pleased to see that she learned just how strong of a woman, and mother she really was. Nothing is more important to her than the safety of those she cares about and it was lovely to see her realize how strong and brave she could be in the face of what seemed like insurmountable odds.

Xavian was the perfect alpha male for the role in Knight Awakened. He's a killer and has done some horrible, horrible things to other people but throughout the novel he redeems himself as he learns to love, comfort and protect Afina and her wee one a little girl of two years old names Sabine. He even goes so far as to attempt to protect Afina from the Goddess whom she now serves before he relented and accepted her role in both of their lives now.

The other characters in the novel were interesting too and while they don't appear in the novel for extended periods of time I did like reading things from their point of view and learning why they were after the couple.

Overall, I loved this book. I thought it was a fantastic read and I couldn't get enough of Afina and Xavian's romance! I highly recommend this to everyone looking for a different type of romance novel. This isn't the typical historical or paranormal romance but is a fantastic mixture of both genres with a lot of action. I can't wait to read more by this author and I'm very much looking forward to reading the second book in Coreene Callahan's Circle of Seven series.

On the run for two years, Afina hides from the warlord Vladimir Barbu and his brutality. But when the fiercest assassin is sent after her, Afina's days of freedom may be numbered. Xavian was taken from his family at a young age. Beaten and molded into a killing machine, he defied his cruel master and broke free. Wishing to save boys from the same fate, the bounty he'd receive for handing over Afina would secure that dream but Xavian isn't the monster everyone, including himself, thinks he is. One look, one touch from the beautiful and fearless priestess has Xavian wishing for things he believes he doesn't deserve.

I was a little worried that Afina would be sassy but always in need of saving. Thankfully, that wasn't the case. Afina is high priestess and in order for Vladimir to receive the title of King, she must support him and say her magical amulet, and the goddess it represents, supports him. Refusing to be forced into submission, Afina goes into hiding and is successful until Xavian. Even once captured, Afina doesn't give up. She fights every step of the way and I welcomed not just her stubbornness but also her strong, caring spirit and refusal to throw in the towel.

Xavian may be a highly trained and feared assassin but he has a heart under all those weapons and muscles. Claiming to need her healing powers for his fortified sanctuary for the children he's rescued from his former master, Xavian kidnaps Afina to keep her safe from Vladimir. If it wasn't for Afina standing up to him, I would have thought Xavian was too much of a caveman but she kept him from dominating her. The man is alpha to his scarred core but I didn't feel he crossed into being overbearing, something I can't tolerate. Rather, he's a strong protector with a ferocity that makes lesser men cower while having vulnerability Afina only gets to see. An excellent hero.

Afina takes charge in the romance department. Xavian has the familiar mindset of "I crave her yet I don't deserve her" but once Afina has her heart set on it, he doesn't stand a chance. She's up for the challenge and when he gives in to what he knows is right, Xavian is a sexual beast. Very hot and there are emotions behind it. Maybe not as much as they claimed to feel but it was going in that direction.

There are a few things happening at once. In addition to Vladimir hunting Afina, Xavian's escape isn't sitting well with his formal master and he wants to make an example out of him. Also, there's divine intervention that will expand throughout the series plus a surprise family revelation early on. Seems like a lot but each is woven into Afina and Xavian's story very well and it feels like nothing is forced to fit.

Gritty and dark with suspense and romance, Coreene Callahan starts her new series off right. I fell in love with the characters, including a few supporting ones I hope will get their own books, and the story had me hooked. There is magic involved but it's not over done and the dragons are great alongside the warriors. I look forward to see how everything unfolds as the series continues.

Shonna's review: Xavian,... alpha, lethal, fierce, leader, assassin. Yet, pushed in the corner of his heart, surrounded by stone are hurt, broken, and needing. Truly believing that he is undeserving, these emotions never dare to breach the walls of their confinement. Now possessing freedom, he strives to find a better way through life and without meaning to, takes the beginning steps for what is now a growing number of willing followers under his wing.
Hiding and on the run, Afina cherishes her daughter, while protecting the magical amulet with powers she doesn’t understand. While her past has always been full of self doubt and apprehension, the future today forces her true enter strengths to take the lead. Developing the strong woman inside flows with grace as she surrenders to the man that dares to be the key that unfolds the powers as a Priestess, and the love in her heart.
Knights Awakened is an amazing introduction to a new series that now has an off and running start. This historical romance jumps its boundaries to add paranormal, and fantasy to the mix with the end product being a fantastic read. The world-building around the 14th century settings are crystal clear with details in your minds eye. The characters are richly developed and alive on the pages. Hot and sizzling, the magical action packed chapters are swamped with everything you could want in a great read, and a delight to indulge in. I thoroughly enjoyed this work of Corenne Callahan’s, just as I have enjoyed her previous books in THE DRAGONFURY SERIES.

Knight Awakened is the first book by Coreene Callahan that I've ever read. However, let me assure you that it won't be the last. This first book in the Circle of Seven series was a great read and I can't wait to learn more about this world.

What did I love about this book? Well let's start with the sexual tension. It was full of it. The sparks flying off of Xavian and Afina were more than enough to set my heart ablaze. I couldn't wait till they got it on.

The characters in this book were quite engaging. Xavian was supposed to be this hard shelled assassin yet he rescued a bunch of boys from the evil man that had taught him to kill. I loved these two sides of Xavian. Whereas yes he was this powerful and strong male, within him lay a man who strove to do what was right. Afina was a great character too. It must have taken great strength to leave all that she had known in order to protect her kingdom from Vladimir. I admired her determination.

I must say that basically everything about this book was fantastic from the characters right down to the storyline. It was full of breathtaking action. I highly recommend this book because it will enthrall you on many different levels. I guarantee that you will be instantly swept away by this tale.

A definite 5 star rating - Colleen Callahan’s Dragon Fury Series is one of my favorite reads and I feel we now have a magnificent start with Knight Awakened, the first of her new series “Circle of Seven”. This was a fantastic book. Even thou there was a lot of information to absorb, this was something that was expected for the first book of the series. The development of the love and trust between Alfina and Xavian was a truly wonderful and enjoyable read. All of the information that was given on the other characters left you with an intense interest to learn more about them. I hope we continue see more of Alfina and Xavian in the upcoming war with the underworld while we learn more about the others of the seven, along with the dragons and other characters in the future books. It should be a great adventure and I am definitely looking forward to reading all of the books that will be a part of this very exciting new series.

I just won a copy of this book. It looks like it is going to be amazing! I can't wait till it gets here.

***UPDATE***

Well I have finally taken the time to read this amazing book and I am kicking myself for putting it off for so long! So I won this book on Goodreads in exchange for an honest review. Here it is.....

This book is a Historical Paranormal Romance set in Eastern Europe. The story itself is a fantastic world filled with witchery, assassins, dragons and prophecies. The main characters are interesting, sexy and exciting though at times the story itself dragged. Sometimes this happens in the first book of a series in order to set the world up for the series as a whole. I didn't mind it in this book because this world the author created was just to exciting to miss all the little details.

I would highly recommend this book to everyone.

Now I have noticed this author has another series called Dragonfury that I must go find and read immediately!
