Everyone knows that the creatures of the outside world are forbidden by magic to enter the land of Een. That's why young Kendra Kandlestar is so surprised when a giant Unger arrives in the middle of the night to deliver a cryptic message - If she can find the fabled Door to Unger, she will be able to unlock the truth about her long-lost family. Soon, Kendra finds herself on an epic adventure in which she must tangle with dwarves, monsters, and one strange, magic-peddling faun. It's a world of magic, monsters, and mystery!
Our 8 year old says it was amazing. She was on the edge of her seat the whole time and there were arguments about going to bed “one more chapter”. This book delivers on all its promises of fantasy, friends, adventure, creatures, relationships and family. We loved it as a read together book, mostly mom aloud and some kiddo. Looking forward to book 3.
I read this to my 4 year old daughter a chapter a night. She enjoyed it and so did I. It was a good fantasy adventure, exciting but not so much that my little one had nightmares. There were some frightening bits but I think it was just as much the way I read it as the words I read. Kendra is a nice heroine and it is nice that the main character is a female. The world Mr. Fodi creates is rich and filled with nice characters. When I asked my daughter for her review she said her favorite bit was when Kendra figured out that Troogle was her brother and she least liked the scary bits in the dark. She didn't like the way each chapter end was a minor cliffhanger but she is used to books like Little House on the Prairie. I enjoyed reading this to her and it is head and shoulders above some of of the 'for kids' stuff we've tried.
This one was even better than the first. The story was set up from the first one. There is a lot of foreshadowing and symbolism. Jam packed excitement. My girls were totally addicted, and chose to have me read rather than play video games. She said, "It is too interesting, I want to find out what happens next!" That is high praise from a girl who resisted all chapter books because they were boring and had no pictures. I love the character Troogul and the partnership that develops between him and Kendra even though Eens and Ungers are sworn enemies. The ending was magnificent.
In The Box of Whispers, Kendra Kandlestar helped us understand the magic of facing ourselves. Now she’s back—older, wiser and full of spunk—to share with us the incredible power of resisting negativity and being gatekeepers of our own truth.
